Re: [RBW] Re: Bombadil Info

2019-03-17 Thread Chad
I don’t have the original receipt since I bought it used from the first owner.
I think it is in California right now. I’ll look and see if I have the serial
number in an old email or pic and PM it to you. I remember it likely being
from the first batch of frames based on the production date and low serial
number. I loved that bike but there was a defect that was causing the paint to
peel off the fork. Also the original owner took it on a tour overseas and
sanded and primed all the big chips to avoid rust from the sea air. It was a
too nice of a bike not to have the frame repainted but I decided that it was
just a bit to tall for my PBH if I was going to continue using it as a pure
MTB. The other one nit pick that I had was that the tire clearance was limited
to about a 51mm Pacenti Quasi-Moto due to the the really low seat stay bridge.
I was going to send it to Riv’s recommenced painter, Rick, and he said he could
easily raise the bridge a little bit and his price were somewhat reasonable. I
believe Riv used a local painter, but not Rick, to shoot the frame. IIRC the
first of the Bombadil frames came raw and you had the choice of a powder coat
in clear or powder in a limited palet of colors. I think you could also have
it custom wet painted at extra cost. I found several upclose frame shots in
the silver and gold color that Riv may have used for their site or in a
catalogue. I bought it the Bomba from the original owner and he bought it when
it was a web special. He or the guy I sold it to may still be on this list and
I think I still have their contact info. I also think I saw some shots of your
bike on Facebook recently. You have a fantastic bike!

I just realized the copy of Rivendell Reader #23 up on my site is missing a

Does anyone have a paper copy that they could scan? Or send to me so I can

Great point on the accessories, William. My Tern/Xtracycle Cargo Node
came with the Tern Kanga rack on the front which is extremely useful. I also
keep a "Captain Hook" elastic net on the back so I can tie something
down to the back deck if I'm not hauling my kid to a soccer game. The
Xtracycle bags can have a lot going on with all those straps, but I'm
happy to spend 10-15 minutes fiddling with straps so that I can carry
what would normally go in the back of a station wagon.

[RBW] Re: Rainy Day Rack Install

2019-03-17 Thread J Imler
Okay, a quick follow-up for the maybe two people who might consider this gear
option.

I attempted a rear rack install on the Burley Kazoo. It didn't work out. A
normal rear rack sits too high for even extra long struts to reach the frame at
a decent angle, if at all.

The RackTime front rack I'm using in the pics can't use the drilled holes at
the widest portion of the frame because of a sizing issue. The RackTime is for
fork spacing, so using the p-clamps is what works. I put a lock washer where
the aluminium rod meets the frame in the center, so a three point connection.

I like the addition. It's got me thinking this could pass for a third wheel
type touring rig pretty easy by discarding the kid cycling bits.

Here's pics -

[RBW] WTB: Racktop Riv bag in Large (TrunkSack, Big Loafer, etc)

2019-03-17 Thread Reed Kennedy
The rear rack on my Jack Taylor tandem looks so lonely unladen. The rear
fender requires it for support, but it seems the yearn for more.

I’d like to give it a rack top bag and thus a job, a purpose.

But Riv only has them in small. It is capable of so much more!

Does anyone have a Big Loafer, large TrunkSack, or other bigger Riv racktop
bag they’d be willing to part with? Happy to pay or trade at your
preference.

Best,
Reed Kennedy

Re: [RBW] Re: Buy a Clem (from Rivendel) and get a $750 store credit(!)

2019-03-17 Thread Jim Bronson
It does seem they're going to the well quite a bit. I don't know what it's
going to take to get the business on more solid footing but continuing to
make these sort of appeals seems like it's probably going to have
diminishing returns each time it's tried.

When the previous gen 65s went on sale for $1300 I bought one, for me that
was a good deal and I ride the bike pretty often. It's great for the mixed
terrain riding I do often now that I live in the suburbs, whereas my other
Rivs are more or less straight roadies.

When the cash flow appeal was made, I bought some gift certificates and
never used them.

Now this current offer, while a good one, doesn't really work for me as the
biggest size is 59s and I already have a Clem H anyway. I could buy my
wife a 45 but she doesn't ride the bike she has very much anyway. Yea it'd
be great to have a 750$ gift certiifcate just to buy maintenance parts but
I have to assume that Rivendell would be selling the bike at cost and then
with the gift certificate I'd be picking them apart bit by bit for the next
couple of years. I don't know how this helps the business.

I was surprised they did another run of Clem Hs anyway, it seemed like on
this list that most of the usual suspects had already gotten one. Maybe
they sold briskly the first time around. As the prior poster mentions, it
seems like the Ls are sold out a lot.

What would really help me more is to barter, but that don't really help
their business' cashflow. At any rate I would love to trade my 90s Burley
Duet tandem for a 45 Clem. I finally came to the realization that it's way
too small for the Captain. It's sitting in the garage gathering dust. It's
25 years old and barely been ridden.

But anyway.

[RBW] Re: Cargo e-bikes are an amazing concept, but the options are imperfect

2019-03-17 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
William, this is brilliant! “See if the shop will rent you the bike, ideally
for a week. You need to see how it fits into your life, how easy it is to do
various tasks, how much the kids like it, etc.”

Yes. Nothing beats climbing and descending your hills with your loads. You know
them, how they feel, and there is no way to approximate that without a “week in
the life of” to know if it works for you or not. Good luck, though, being able
to do that. The “rental” fee for us with our cargo bike (Haul-a-day) was the
depreciation between buying it (no way to test ride) and selling it (shipping
both to buy and sell because, being the mountains, we are in a non-cargo bike
friendly market) after a few years of dwindling use because it didn’t fit our
needs as we’d imagined.

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] Re: Cargo e-bikes are an amazing concept, but the options are imperfect

2019-03-17 Thread William!
My family has owned an Edgerunner (non-electric), Spicy Curry and now a Tern
GSD. They are all great bikes and played a major part in allowing us to remain
car free with two kids.

Here’s my take:
- Get something with a Bosch system. Incredibly smooth, plenty of power (no
issues hauling adult passengers up hills) and reliable.
- The small wheel factor of the GSD takes a bit of getting used to, but it
makes the bike far more practical for daily use. At $4k the base model GSD is
also the best deal for a Bosch-equipped cargo bike. It is extremely well design
- thru axels, adjustable bars, good integrated lighting and many other nice
details.
- Pay as much attention to the accessories as you do the bike (especially if
you plan to haul children). The racks, bags, kickstand, and platforms available
will play a huge part in how useful, flexible and cumbersome a carp bike is.
And unlike with normal bikes, there is little interoperability. Currently I
give Tern and Xtracycle the highest marks for accessorie design.
- A test ride is not enough. See if the shop will rent you the bike, ideally
for a week. You need to see how it fits into your life, how easy it is to do
various tasks, how much the kids like it, etc.

Good luck!
William

[RBW] Re: Buy a Clem (from Rivendel) and get a $750 store credit(!)

2019-03-17 Thread Kolby
It bums me out that Riv is in this position (again) with the Clem H. To
Grant's point, it definitely should be selling given the mainstream market.
Meanwhile, the Clem L is perpetually out of stock despite seemingly healthy
demand (on this list, at least) and good press.

I love my Rivs and I love the brand. But man, is it just me or does the
marketing and messaging get quirkier and more baroque every year? They
don't make it easy for the uninitiated, at least, and this is clearly at
odds with the growth goals of a $1600 bike such as the Clem.

But now, instead of trying a new marketing tactic with the Clem, it is
going away. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It applies if you put the order in online by end of today (Sunday March 17,
2019). It's part of the promotion, not a standard shipping deal.

One caveat is I don't know how you determine if you're still one of the first
10 to order today, there's no one there to call and ask.

2019-03-17 Thread REC (Roberta)
I'm sure it's not going to come as a surprise to anyone that Leah is as
nice, kind, and down-to-earth as she is in her letters! My plan is to
work on riding hills here in mostly flat Philadelphia, although I do live
near the infamous Manyunk Wall that's on a famous bike race route (don't
ask me which one; I don't know), so next year we can go on a longer ride,
and remember to stop and take pictures! The view in her area is beautiful
with mountains in the distance.

One thing that I think most of us on this board share is a love of

accessories, nature, cameras and coffee.

[RBW] Re: New Sam Hillborne build

2019-03-17 Thread Adam M.
Because of the sitting position (upright) and my weight (270 lbs.) I
compress the springs somewhat when I sit on the saddle, but there is no
bouncing while pedaling until I hit a bump or dip and the saddle dips a
bit. It is the most comfortable bicycle that I have ever ridden over
bumps. I contemplated getting a sprung saddle with only rear springs, but
I am happy that I went with the one that has the front springs as well.
This is a Cadillac on two wheels!

It's a beautiful bike--a really nice color scheme. I LOVE that saddle.
My comfort improved when I switched to a Flyer, a sprung saddle. Do you
bounce much with that saddle, or does it just gently soak up the bumps in
the road?

Happy riding!

[RBW] Re: Cargo e-bikes are an amazing concept, but the options are imperfect

2019-03-17 Thread Lynn Haas
I test rode a Yuba Spicy Curry a few years ago. If we ever go back down to
one car (unlikely) that's what I would go for.

Definitely get something with a throttle. eBikes are super heavy and uphill
starts suck.

Looks like you know what to look for, but I'll add the mention anyway -
with eBikes, the tech is still expensive and manufacturers frequently cut
component quality to make a price point. I personally would not consider an
eBike with an MSRP of less than $4k.

I work at BikeTexas here in Austin. Shoot me an email when you get here and
we can take our Atlantii and go for a beer. We seem to have a surprising
number of Riv bikes here in town.

John,

I have 2001 Joe/Joe Riv custom (62cm C-T) that is just a bit too big for
me. It will run 32's without fenders and 28 with fenders. No provision for
rack mounting. Very light weight. Nice shape. Let me know if that is
something you might consider and I can send oics etc.
