Re: [RBW] Re: PSA: 2 Gus Boots For Sale on Riv Site

2019-03-26 Thread Ed Carolipio
Ah, I see I am not the only ed obsessing over narrow non-disc rims with
27.5+ tires...

The Cliffhanger has an interior width of 25mm. The bike came stock with
Cliffhangers and 2.8" G-One Allrounders, so my guess is folks on the board
who've demoed this Gus at Riv and had All-Rounders also had the same rim. I
did a casual road ride with that setup with no issues, though I do worry if
I do anything on the trails the tires would get squirmy. I was monitoring
the GBW thread and that seemed to be a consensus opinion.

Would be curious to hear about from GBW owners on what riding the
aggressively was like. (Sadly, I won't get a chance to do that anytime
soon, otherwise I'd report on it.) Also appreciate any leads on a 650b rim
with a brake track and an internal width closer to 30mm...

[RBW] Re: PSA: 2 Gus Boots For Sale on Riv Site

2019-03-26 Thread Ed Carolipio
I had/have (still packing it for sale) a 51cm Joe. I got the Small GBW
prototype and adjusted it into "commuter mode" recently. Key build
differences with the Joe vs GBW: 55cm Albas with a 9cm Nitto Technomic stem
vs 710mm Jones Loop with a 30mm Spank stem; 2.0" Marathon Supremes on VO
Diagonales vs 2.35" G-One Speeds on Velocity Cliffhangers; and Sugino XD600
cranks vs Silver cranks. Everything else is roughly the same, and I ride
the same urban, all pavement route with the same load to work.

The one sentence summary on the GBW: there's no mistaking it's a mountain
bike. It may have a rack and notionally street tires, but the ride rhymes
with all the mountain bikes I've owned. I read all of that Mongolian riding
stuff that Grant wrote about and thought, yeah, sure, Grant, whatever,
you're the crazy man riding into chest deep pools of water in your
Ethiopian shoes, but after riding the GBW I kinda get what he's saying.

I also like the swoopy top tube since I can mount the bike without having
to swing my leg over the seat and standover is one less thing to worry
about when the terrain gets uneven or when tackling a challenging part of a
trail.

For me, I picked the GBW over the Joe because I wanted a mountain bike that
I could commute with during the week, and I like the ride of fat tires. The
GBW will likely outshine the Joe on single track while lightly loaded,
while the Joe would outperform the GBW when hauling a load or pounding out
miles on maintained gravel roads.

2019-03-26 Thread PaulS
I am not a big fan of "mixte" frames, but Gus Boots speaks to me. If I
didn't have a Hunq, this is the frame I would pick. I would think it would
do very well for most off-road terrain. Tumbleweed can take true 4" tires,
but I've been on extended bikepacking trips on fat tires and it's not that
fun. Some people like it, but unless you're on sand or snow for 50%+ of
the time, Plus tires would make a great option. Looking forward to its
release. Just from the pictures, it appears it's regular 100/135 QR hubs.

[RBW] Spring! And riding for fun! And 20th anniversary! And ...!

2019-03-26 Thread Patrick Moore
Beautiful high desert spring day, 73*, winds modest and discrete at 6 gusts
to 7 from SW (and this is our windy season!), cerulean blue skies with a
few child's picture book puffy clouds, pollen count low, and I work for
myself and thus can with good conscience take a break and go for a ride.
Total of 19 miles this afternoon including side trips.

The Joe Starck custom 26" wheeled gofast turns 20 in April; what a long
strange trip it's been, too. Last year Chauncey Matthews replaced the
original OEM "short horizontals" with *long* horizontals, and added st cage
bosses; the longer dropouts accommodate the 15 t cruising gear but will
accept a 12 t for the S3X if I decide to use it (95/71/59), and also
accepts a 17/20 Dingle on the flip side of the Phil, for 76/67/57.

I have to say that, because I ride principally for fun, and because this
bike is just more delightful than any of my other bikes, including the
almost-as-delightful 2003 Curt which turned 16 this month, and the also
very delightful Matthews road-bike-for-dirt -- it just feels so light and
deft and responsive, not to mention comfortable -- the other bikes are also
comfortable.

I turned 64 this month and while I am always the last person to remember my
own birthdays (family and friends generally remind me), I did rather
hilariously recall a song that I'd first learned about this time in 1968,
after visitors left the Sgt. Pepper's album behind for us kids after their
visit: "When I'm 64." I remember rather liking the song and thinking that
age 64 was a kind of legendary thing, like the lost continent of Atlantis
or just and efficient government. (Actually, the government thought came
later.) But here I am. Note that I was a very enthusiastic and ignorant
cyclist, already engaged in chronic upgrading, in spring 1969.

bit lighter, kind of more stable and noticeably more comfortable. The
riding position was anything bike MTB-like. Today 46cm Appaloosa is my
'SUV'. Felt like GBW would shine better for a utility bike. Better dirt
abilities is an added bonus.

Same same, Chris. Of course I just bought an Atlantis so it didn't really save
me from a sale, but I'm kinda surprised how not-enthused I am about this bike.
Lots of folks who ride more dirt than I do will love them, though.

Re: [RBW] Acorn Bags for sale

2019-03-26 Thread John McBurney
I have these exact bags in black and this is a great deal. Acorn bags are
hard to get, made only in small batches by a home based business. They are
beautifully well made. The fabric Martexin Wax is a little coarser than
Sackville Sack waxed cotton but is made in USA by a family owned business
in operation nearly 200 years. The leather is absolutely beautiful.

Hello Forum,
I'm offering for sale one Large Acorn saddlebag and one Acorn
handlebar bag. Both are Olive canvas in color with honey-colored leather.
The bags are in as new condition, never been wet, and always stored
indoors. I don't have photos to share but they are exactly as they appear
on Acorn's website. It seems Acorn has not offered the Olive canvas in a
while. I'd like to get $125.00 for the set shipped to lower 48 CONUS. I
have also posted this on the iBOB forum but would like to offer this to
this forum as well.

[RBW] Re: Top Tube Upslope - How much difference does it make?

2019-03-26 Thread phil k
I think it depends on how far up you want your bars as well. For me, I rode
a Sam which had a 57.5 ETT, but it fit more like a 54.5-55cm straight top
tube. Both used 80cm, with about 1cm above saddle.

[RBW] Top Tube Upslope - How much difference does it make?

2019-03-26 Thread RDS

For a given top tube length on the Riv geometry chart, say 575 for example,
how much extra height does the 6 degree upslope give you? Meaning, if you
measure from the floor to the top of the top tube just to the inside of the
intersection b/t the top tube and the (1) seat tube and (2) head tube. How
much height is gained?

Also, will you feel like that you have more standover clearance on a bike
that has a longer or shorter top tube given the 6 degree upslope? For
example, the Clem H 52 & AHH 54.5 has a standover height of 81.5. Clem top
tube length is 610 vs 570 for AHH. The 6 degree upslope for the top tube
happens in a shorter distance for the AHH as compared to the Clem ... even
though the standover height is the same, does one feel like you have more
standover clearance than the other due to the slope?
