2019-04-19 Thread Ian A
It was a Toyo Atlantis that Roberta was looking at possibly buying. 83 PBH
would be pushing it for sure and only for someone with a long torso and arms,
but doable. The MIT Atlantis is sized differently.

I'm at 84PBH and would fit a Toyo 56cm or 58cm.

I agree with all concerned that Roberta made the right decision not to buy it!

Glad it was a fun visit.

2019-04-19 Thread dougP
Agree. My PBH is 85 & I'm at the low end of the range for 58 cm Atlantis.
On the old ones, I could have ridden either 56 or 58 as they overlapped. I
rode a 53 cm MIT Atlantis last year at RBWHQ & the fit was great, so the
new geo & fit is going to be quite different from the old ones. In fact, I
thought the 53 was a 56 before they told me the size. The longer wheelbase
makes for an outstanding ride.

Ordinarily, I really enjoy your posts. But I LOVE this one! What a
fantastic story. Grant looks like he's having as much fun as your kids.
Getting your parents on new bikes is wonderful. I love that your Mom just
took off for a test ride & came back with "wild eyes" & HAD TO HAVE THAT
BIKE! Reminds me of when my wife first rode her Atlantis. She agreed to
try it out to humor me & within a few minutes ride couldn't live without
it.

This event deserves a follow-on report when the new bikes arrive & there's
a family ride.

Fabulous story and can FEEL your Mom's excitement with her forthcoming Birdie
through your writing skills. You say that she doesn't ride much, but I bet
she'll ride more on a quality bike, with your Dad beside her (I love that).

Your boys look very happy on the tandem with Grant. It's nice that they had a
good time too.

Now, you said seven Riv bike family in the future, but it'll be eight, because
you didn't add in your Dad's future Clem L. Awesome!

Re: [RBW] Re: Berthoud Saddles

2019-04-19 Thread John Phillips
Hi Kai,
I position my saddle so my sit bones are centered about where the
widest part of the saddle is. I do shift back and forth a tiny bit when I
stretch out or sit up straight and ride hands free. I am riding with larger
pedals, with my arches centered over the spindles of the pedals, so I
needed to lower my saddle 4cm and that places the saddle 1.3cm forward. My
PBH is 85cm and my saddle height is about 71cm on Nitto S83 seatposts with
the saddles all the way back on their rails.

Does that help?

[RBW] Re: New Here. I am thinking of selling my Betty Foy, any advice on value?

2019-04-19 Thread Ed Carolipio
Hi cinzaw,

I suggest searching the board for comparable bikes that have been posted in
the past. Use "for sale", "Betty Foy", and "Yves Gomez" as search keywords,
and look at pricing for completes and frames. Use those prices to inform
you of how to price your bike initially, though note that the selling
price was lower than the posted asking price.

You can also put up a "Feeler" post, which is a request to see if anyone is
interested in the bike. The post looks almost like a "For Sale" one but
without a price. Describe the frame (especially size) and the build list.
Include pictures, a list of defects (primarily on the frame/fork), and the
approximate age, usage, and condition of the components. Search the board
using the keyword "Feeler" for how others have done that in the past. You
might even get an offer you like, and finish a sale that way.

If you do decide to do a FS post, don't be afraid to set a price on the
high side but do make it clear that you've posted an "asking" price. The
market will tell you if you set the price too high ... by being silent. If
that happens, just reply to your post as a "Bump" and indicate the new
lower asking price in that reply.

Good luck,
Ed C.

[RBW] New Here. I am thinking of selling my Betty Foy, any advice on value?

2019-04-19 Thread Ian A
Best to post a few pictures detailing components and any scratches etc. The
size of the frame is important, so post frame size or some measurements.

Your location would be good for people to know.

Value would depend on condition and components, but with photos, component
details and measurements, there will be people on the list who will be able to
suggest what it's worth. Probably about what you paid for it back in 2012 give
or take a little.

[RBW] New Here. I am thinking of selling my Betty Foy, any advice on value?

2019-04-19 Thread cinzaw
I have a blue Betty Foy I got fall of 2012 in quite good condition. It
is a smidge too tall for my toes to hit the ground even with the post all
the way down. I may sell it if I can not get a good fit with a different
saddle. (currently B67 .. I will try B17s or C19)

Any general advice on selling? Condition very good, paint has nicks from
locking. Albatross handles, cork grips, gears on the handles Set for
upright .

How much might I hope for?

ps.. My BF a wonderful ride.. like a Rolls, but terrifying to jump off of
in slippery conditions when I don't quite have my feet on the ground.

Hey thanks Tom. It's a constant work in progress, like Rivs tend to be.

I honestly don't remember. Maybe Sierra Trading Post? I bought a couple

Have some Billie bars on the way to see if I can get a little less rise,

I have a bike that had cork grips installed by Rivendell and I wanted to
replace the bars. I assumed I would have to destroy them, but based on a
post to this list recently, I just twisted them off. Riv had put just
enough adhesive to keep them in place, but not so much as to make them
impossible to remove with a very firm rotation.
I did close to what Mark said when I put them back on the new bars - I put
some bar tape on lengthwise and pushed/twisted the grips on. To be honest,
one is loose now, so I'll add another bit of grip tape under that one.
It was the perfect solution for me, because I didn't know if the bars I
installed would be right for me.

That is a great price, even though their description misrepresents the
front rack. It's not a Mark's Rack. If it was a Mark's Rack, there would

Not necessarily. The ones that are punched out and grooved for use with
bar-end shifters can just be held in place by the shifters/cables/brake
levers, but you're probably not talking about those.

Depending on how much risk you're willing to accept, cork grips that cover
the ends of the bar can be attached reversibly by putting a little cotton
bar tape lengthwise on the bar to tighten up the fit if it's too loose and
just a little bit of shellac near the other end (still wet/wicked-in when
you install the grips) to secure the grip a little better. It is then
possible, but slow, to dissolve the shellac holding the grip on with
alcohol later, just so long as the shellac didn't go too far down the grip
initially.

Unfortunately, the time to consider these questions was before installing
the grips. I know whereof I speak. I write this within sight of the bike
with cork grips I attached with Gorilla glue. The grips, brake levers and
handlebar are now permanently a set, never to be parted.

Cork grips are much more brittle than common rubber/plastic/silicone grips
and tightly fitting examples may not survive removal, or installation for
that matter, even if they aren't glued at all.

Kai,
I have a Berthoud Aspin on my AHH with Noodle bars, and a Vars on my
Hunqapillar with Albatross bars. I know the numbers point to the wider
Berthoud saddles being similiar to the B17, but to my sit bones and butt,
the Aspin/Aravis saddles feel like a B17 select but more comfortable, and
the Aubisque/Vars/Mente saddles feel like the B67 Select but more
comfortable. The narrower nose with less flare between the thighs is also
more with both Berthoud shapes.
And I only use Obenauf's to treat my saddles.
I hope this helps, but YMMV of course,

[RBW] Re: PSA-ST. Louis Craigslist.

2019-04-19 Thread Julian Westerhout
The second one is in Carbondale, IL and is also a 58 cm, and only $1500, w/
what looks like a standard Riv build, plus rack and basket and Herse Barlow
Pass tires. Quite a good deal, IMHO -- if it were only my size! It is
listed by a shop, so perhaps shipping will be easier?

[RBW] Re: For sale: Brooks B-17 Narrow Honey

2019-04-19 Thread Steve Butcher
I wouldn't doubt it as I've suspected there have been some lapses in the
process.
