I agree completely about Rivs wearing Rivendell decals. One of several

Re: [RBW] Re: What high security locks are people locking their bikes with?

2019-04-27 Thread Leah Peterson
I have to correct my earlier post - I said I couldn’t get the Pit lock to fit
my front wheel, but after reading Steven’s post, I remembered that I had the
Abus Nutfix. I have to lay the bike on its side and use an 8 hex to unlock the
wheel = Abus. But the front skewer did not fit, and not even the LBS calling
the manufacturer fixed the issue. I will maybe try the Pit lock now, but dread
having one more key!

I hope the Abus Nutfix is more durable than the Zéfal locking skewers that
require the bike to be upside down before release. Those work well for the
first few months, but tend to seize up after that. Then it's fun, fun, fun,
trying to get the skewer to open again.

Re: [RBW] In praise of Silver Shifters

2019-04-27 Thread Patrick Moore
The Silvers do have a nice feel and a precise action. But my several bar
end sets were delicate; knock over the bike and crack something essential
-- forget what it was; might have been an internal part of the lever
proper. At any rate, it required buying a new lever. Also, the plastic
friction washers were prone to breaking, andI had to use blue Loctite to
keep the bolts properly tensioned.

I went back to the old SunTour bar cons. These pull more cable per unit
arc, and they need to be severely Loctited to the proper tension, but once
you do that, they last and last. Also, I've come to prefer the feel of the
shorter, more bulky lever with its greater cable pull: I shift 10
mismatched (14-27, thinking of 13-26) with an 8 speed road derailleur, and
once I overcame my diffidence and shyness and internalized the brutal
"shift with authority, as if you were answerable to no man" style, all is
capochetic. Copacetic. Serendipitous.

Patrick Moore, who just had a nice capochetic ride to and from church on
this our Holy Saturday, for the pre-Pascha morning liturgy with its 50,000
interminable gospel readings.

Re: [RBW] Re: 5cm Stem or shorter

2019-04-27 Thread esoterica etc

I have a Soma quill adapter with a 40mm threadless stem which allows me to use
a Jones Loop Bar on my 1985 MB-2, and it works great. I chose the Soma because
it was the adapter that I could find with the greatest length to get the bars
way up high.

And like you, I’m in the process of putting drop bars on my long top tube MIT
Atlantis. So far I’ve got the 50mm Nitto Technomic mated to a Nitto Noodle bar.
I haven’t mounted it yet, but if the 50mm stem turns out to be too long, I can
always poach the Soma adapter to go shorter. You can find plenty of 30 and 40mm
threadless stems online, but if you need to do a 0mm stem, looks like the
threaded Analog quill stem might be your only option. Having a
threaded-to-threadless adapter with a threadless stem isn’t nearly as pretty as
the Analog stems, but it is about 1/2 the price. Good luck with your build and
keep us posted!

Not as elegant as a Nitto stem, you can get a quill stem adapter and put a

[RBW] In praise of Silver Shifters

2019-04-27 Thread Paul G
I used to have all sorts of auto shifting and slipping Silver levers on the
downtube of my Roadeo when putting down power, especially when standing. Those
problems don't exist as bar ends on the same bike. Not sure why that is. I even
bees waxed the screws in both locations. I really like them better on my drop
bar end pods though so no loss for me.

Shifting is perfectly fine for me with a 105 5701 rear derailleur over a
10-Speed Ultegra cassette. Plenty of precision helped by the long lever length.
This is coming from having switched to Silvers from Dura Ace indexed bar end
shifters. It took maybe a week to adjust to them.

That said, I'll be switching to a 9-speed setup when the 10-speed cassette is
done. 9 is more economical.

[RBW] Re: What high security locks are people locking their bikes with?

2019-04-27 Thread 'Steven Seelig' via RBW Owners Bunch
Super late to party. I used to use Pitlocks when they were first devised
(20 years ago) but found the Pinheads more to my liking. It looks like the
Pitlocks have been improved significantly since the first version. Once
committed to a the Pinhead approach, it is hard to go back because the cost
to commonly key several bikes becomes prohibitive. Happy with the Pitlocks
but always worried about forgetting the key.

Abus now also has a locking skewer I us on my City (not Country)
Hillborne. You can't slide the covering off while the bike is upright, and
you use a #8 wrench to unlock once the bike is laid on its side. A slight
pain to work on because you have to tilt the bike to 90 degrees, with the
great tradeoff that you can leave your #8 wrench on the bike. It is of no
use to anyone unless they've already defeated the lock.

I use the Granite X folding lock for in-city lockups - mean streets of DC.

[RBW] In praise of Silver Shifters

2019-04-27 Thread William!
Maybe I got a bad set? I had terrible ghost shifting problems from mine! After
several years of fiddling with other things to try to fix I replaced them with
Dura Ace dt shifters (converted to bar end). Problem solved.

[RBW] Re: 0mm offset Nitto Quill Stem

2019-04-27 Thread Christopher Cote
That stem is incredible. I can see myself building a bike around one. From
the comments on the Radavist page, it sounds like Crust is having Nitto
make them, and they intend to be available soon. Given Crust's ability to
stock things, I'm not holding my breath. I do hope it happens, though.

2019-04-27 Thread Fullylugged
I have them on the down tubes of both of my RBW products and really like them
there. Great feel.
