[RBW] WTB 66 or 68cm Atlantis

2019-05-08 Thread Kurt Manley
Hey Rivsters,

Since my want to trade didn't pan out I thought I'd try a wtb, I'm looking
for a 66 or 68 single top tube Atlantis. I know it's not a common size but
it's worth a shot.

If you've got something you'd like to sell please email me kurtamanley (at)
gmail.com or pm me here.

I'd also be up for trading my 62 green Hunqapillar..

Thanks!

[RBW] Re: Any 90ish PBH folks riding a 52 Clem H?

2019-05-08 Thread tc
Thanks all for your comments so far!

Patrick, I know you are a bigger frame kinda guy. I'm finding that I don't
like the bigger frame on my local trails. My 64 Atlantis is wonderful for
gravel and pavement, but feels way big (as does my 59 ClemH) on
singletrack. A longish stem and a MTB flatish bar, or Wavie, might be the
ticket for me on a 52. Dunno...

Christopher, I guess my saddle height reference is more of a side comment.
Back in the 60s when my friends and I tore up trails on our "BMX'd"
Stingrays, we'd always lower our saddles. I guess it was what you'd call a
learned adaptation to riding rigid bikes that bounce over roots and rocks
when ridden fast :) Done that ever since when riding rigid when the going
gets rough off-road.

Zed, I was hoping you'd chime in too, as I've followed your Clem
experiences with great interest. You have probably toyed with more
combinations of Clem setups than any of us. I think you're on to something
re: making a smaller Clem bigger is an easier feat than a bigger one
smaller.

Eric, yes that's a great point re: reach...but it's kinda crazy of me to
even compare. The 52 Clem H's ETT (actually 60cm, 71.5 ST angle) would
effectively give a greater reach than my 61 Roadini (60.5 ETT, 72 ST angle)
and my 60.5 AHH (60 ETT, 71.5 ST angle), as their taller seat tubes would
put more of the top tube behind the crank. And of course the 59 Clem's
reach would be longer still.

It is interesting that several of the Blue Lug Clem H's are set up with
more seat post height than what is normally confitured/pictured elsewhere.
That's really what started me down this line of thinking for off-road
riding.

[RBW] Re: New bike woes - Albatross bars and Brooks B17 Special saddle

2019-05-08 Thread Tim Bantham
In referring back to the original post I too had a similar dilemma. I ride
a Sam with an Albatross and a Appaloosa with Billie's. I had a B-17 on
both. I have made a choice to not use animal products so I decided to sell
the leather Brooks. I since tried replacing them with every variation of
the Cambium series in the carved variety but just did not agree with any of
them. For me the takeaway is this. Nobody other than you can decide which
saddle is right for you. The only way to know is to try a variety of
choices until you find one that works with you anatomy. I would suggest
focusing on saddle shape as a primary factor. If you are looking for
choices try to find some with different shapes. At the advice of my friend
James @Analog cycles I settled on a WTB SST that they stopped making the
mid 90's. Luckily for me they made these by the gazillions so there are a
ton to choose from hanging around on eBay. I wouldn't have expected this
saddle to be "the one" but it goes to show you that you have to try a
variety before finding what works for YOU. Good luck in your search.

Heyo,

I picked this up from a list member a couple months ago and used it mostly
for coffee outside'ing, the occasional commute, and some S24Os, mostly
off-road. I never really had enough clearance on the rear of my bike to
make full use of the expandable nature of the bag, so am parting ways with
it as a result. Its wonderfully made, and I will be including some titan
straps and a dowel (with some threaded inserts on the end for lights) for
mounting the bag on a brooks. You won't need that if you plan to run it
purely on the front, which I think is the preferred position for most
owners out there. Also, no flower patch, but I have that lying around
somewhere

Asking $200 shipped (give me a couple days to pack and send off, life is
busy right now).

Let me know if you have questions! Again, wonderful bag, but just didn't
work as well as I wanted on my setup.

Happy Wednesday,

Re: [RBW] Any 90ish PBH folks riding a 52 Clem H?

2019-05-08 Thread Eric Daume
Keep in mind that the Clem has a slack (71 degree?) seat tube angle, so
that ETT measurement doesn’t quite line up with a traditional mtb. Reach
would be a better indicator.

[RBW] Re: Any 90ish PBH folks riding a 52 Clem H?

2019-05-08 Thread Zed Martinez
Not quite the same thing but I'm right at the cusp between the 45 and the
52 with about an 80.5 PBH/70cm saddle height. So, literally the last model
of overlap. I started with the 52 in the H, and eventually switched to the
45 but in L. I don't suspect the fit and position I have is quite what Riv
generally has in mind for the Clems, but I have been considerably happier
with my fit on the smaller one, and I certainly didn't dislike the bigger
one any despite some perennial issues that probably arose from me messing
with the fit adjustments too much trying to find where I liked it best. I
do need a pretty long stem now, a 130, and I'm only using VO's Crazy Bars,
anything as sweepy as Riv's bars would possible need longer still. But, the
biggest thing on the bigger size was I struggled to get the saddle as far
forward and the bars as low as I wanted. So, it ended up being one of those
things where at a point it's easier to make a slightly too small bike
bigger than a slightly too big one smaller.

2019-05-08 Thread Marc40a
I use a Son28 with a Sinewave Beacon and the biggest advantage for night
riding is the ability to supplement the power with a small lipstick sized
charger. The steady output is appreciated for technical, slow uphills, or
even hike-a-bike sections. One charge (3300 mah capacity battery, I think)
lasts all night for me under normal conditions.

Oh.. it's also a USB charger as well ;0 )

When I've done test rides after wrenching on my wife and daughter's medium

[RBW] Re: Plus Tires for GBW

2019-05-08 Thread Daniel M
I can confirm that the tread has worn pretty quickly, but since I'm on the
eternal hunt for a 26x3.0" slick, I'm OK with it! I don't think mine have a
huge number of miles on them, but heavily-loaded touring has been a large
proportion of those miles, and that will wear down knobs quickly on almost any
tire. I think I've got at least four 5-ish-day-long loop tours on my pair: two
in Death Valley, one in Southern Utah, and one Monterey to Big Sur and back.
The roads in Death Valley are frankly abhorrent - not rocky roads, just rock
roads, and my only incidents were one pinch flat on each tour due to pushing
the low pressure ideal a bit too far with a heavy load while descending said
rock roads a bit too quickly. The Utah and Big Sur trips had some long paved
sections, and I was really grateful for the reasonably low rolling resistance
on those - my friend on a 4" fatbike couldn't keep up with me on the pavement,
despite having drop bars.

al, I’ve got the schwalbe 60mm speed ones on my clem 64 and very happy with
them. riding forest roads I’ve had one flat from our local greenbrier…got a set
of schwalbe all arounders, same size, and might put them on, but not yet. with
that size the bike can power through a fair amount of sand.

I put jones loop bars on mine, just on a hunch, and love them. sent a pic to
will at riv and he said he’d never have thought they would look so appropriate
and he might try it himself sometime; but I expect many bars will work fine. I
found my go-to brooks b17 a bit harsh on trails, and tried their sprung saddle,
b67 I think…first time ever. I like it so far.

glad they will make some more. tom h

[RBW] Any 90ish PBH folks riding a 52 Clem H?

2019-05-08 Thread tc
Curious to see if anyone rides a "1 size down" Clem H, with SH lowered a
bit below Riv recommendation (maybe by 4ish cm?) for improved off-roading
agility and standover ... esp when running fatter tires? Obviously a
significantly lowered saddle wouldn't fly if you're on a long ride, but for
2 hour adventures, this is an intriguing idea.

Would love to hear thoughts from those who're actually riding a smaller
Clem or were between sizes and opted to go smaller.

In my case (90.5 PBH), a 59 Clem works well for paved riding. A 52,
though, still has a 61.5 ETT and frame geometry that is closer to hardtails
that I'd ride than the 59.

I have old Dia Compe 610s installed on braze on posts. The post spacing I

You will need different brake return springs for Dia Compe brakes on braze

FWIW, long ago when I was still experimenting with Brookses, I found the
B17 N more comfortable than the B17 regular; this for drop bars 3" and more
below saddle -- the regular 17 was too wide for me and the skirts chafed.
The Pro was even nicer feeling.

The Flyer, B17 on springs, was fine on a slightly more upright drop-barred
mtb, but I couldn't get the springs to workd.

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: Clem L 64cm

2019-05-08 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
Wait... another run of 64cm Clem L in summer 2019? Was that announced
recently? I thought I've been up to date on all of their
emails/blugs/blahgs but maybe I missed one somewhere.. or was that relayed
only as inside info in response to a direct inquiry at Riv? My finances
suggest I have no business even considering it and previously the only way
I'd have been able to make it work is by selling/trading my H version which
I prefer to keep. If another run is actually on the horizon I might need
to plan accordingly and start selling other goods to help get a step thru
frameset to complement my 65cm Clem H. Another complete is out of question
but I could likely save enough and downsize enough to go for a frameset.

[RBW] Re: Dia-Compe 610s used with Braze-On Posts

2019-05-08 Thread Jim C
Hi, John-

The brake arms should just transfer from the normal mounting plate with
pivot posts to a set of brazed on posts. I have not done it with Weinmanns
but did the same thing with Mafac Competitions without problem. I have 36
mm Honjo alloy fenders on the bike and there is another 7 mm of space on
either side between the fender and the pivot bolt location. My seat stays
are the conventional, flat plate style that attach to the side of the seat
tube lug. Narrow types like shot in stays will narrow the fender space.

Re: [RBW] Re: New bike woes - Albatross bars and Brooks B17 Special saddle

2019-05-08 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
Huh? Let’s agree that not all butts are the same. I have B17s in almost all my
bikes, which are almost entirely drop bar.

Personally, I find the Brooks Professional and other narrower Brooks variants
to be *too* narrow. But that’s just me. Your pelvis may vary.

[RBW] Re: New bike woes - Albatross bars and Brooks B17 Special saddle

2019-05-08 Thread Ron Mc
Breaking-in Brooks saddles is an internet myth resulting from
misapplication and improper adjustment. Leather stretch is the
life-limiting mechanism for Brooks saddles, and anything you do to
accelerate it is simply shortening the life of the saddle.
The B-17 is too wide for a drop-bar road bike, and a brand-new B-15 is the
most invisible saddle I've ever ridden in that application. B-17 fits me
perfectly on 2 semi-upright bikes.
If you haven't gone through different positions on the saddle nose, that's
the place to start.
Otherwise, you probably need the B-67 if B-17 isn't working for you.

[RBW] Re: Plus Tires for GBW

2019-05-08 Thread Pondero
Patrick, I'll admit that they wear pretty fast, but mine were replaced with
some texture remaining after a year, and much more than 500 miles. I'll admit,
however, that my tires usually last longer because I am relatively light
weight. Tread wear is a consideration with this tire, but the ride quality
makes up for it in my case.
