[RBW] Re: The Final Legolas

2019-08-05 Thread Paul G
Beautiful, Brian. Love the green and cream accents.

Regarding the L vs R question above re: pavement use, the Roadeo has a slightly
lower bottom bracket than the Legolas. I think that might be beneficial for
handling feel while descending on the road when compared to the Legolas' better
clearance over obstacles on the cyclocross course.

Regarding tire sizes and road handling feel on the Roadeo, I liked the handling
best on mine with 28mm tires but choose to use 30mm-33mm for improved comfort
via lower pressures. And the wider tires allow the occasional dirt or gravel
road to be enjoyed.

[RBW] FS: miscellaneous tidbits

2019-08-05 Thread Joe Bunik
Hi gang

Piled up a small midden of trinkets that have accumulated around here,
hopefully something useful for you.

Single item prices do NOT include shipping (+$7 CONUS), BUT if you go
for multiple items I'll cover it. Photo at this url:

https://tinyurl.com/y5fww2cn

- Nitto R50 saddlebag supports / Q/R handles (2x):
New / like-new. I purchased thinking how great it would be to have a
2x2 bag/bike swapable set up; turns out I really don't like
saddlebags! Only used one of them briefly. $75/ea OR $140 for both.

- Shimano BES pair:
Used, mismatched pair. Rear (right) shifter has a GLITCH -- the d-ring
DOES NOT turn fully to the indexed position, "seems jammed" (also
plastic bezel is cracked). I have not taken it apart, but should work
for a friction-only setup. $35

- Shimano XTR SL-M980 10sp trigger:
Like new, for use with Shimano 'I-Spec' mount levers. $35

- Wolftooth 94bcd / 32t N-W chainring:
New in package. $45

- Wolftooth Tanpan SH10 (10sp) pulley:
Used, adapts the pull of Shimano 10sp road shifters to 10sp mountain
derailers. $30

- King Cage Universal Support Bolts (6x):
New, purchased with the intent of adding triple cages to my Jones -
however, the P-clamps don't constrict far enough for my truss fork (I
should have gotten seatstay, not fork blade size!). $30

- Tanaka COPPERPLATE waterbottle cage:
New, $15

- Surly rack struts:
New, 8mm diameter, 190mm length, stainless steel. $10

- Tektro R200 brake levers:
Used, but still with a life to live. $10

Patrick, tire clearance for my briefly owned Roadeo was maxed out at 35mm
(fenderless) with a couple of mm between tire and chain stay. Depending on

[RBW] Re: Which Rivendell frame would you resurrect?

2019-08-05 Thread ascpgh
I responded to the OP of another thread that was essentially an answer to
the "what model would you resurrect" question with my orange Rambouillet:

https://groups.google.com/d/msg/rbw-owners-bunch/vt0OdAZtZDs/1hUH0ETLDQAJ

I've done some original parts swapping to optimize things a bit. Racer
brakes for better clearance when closed under braking, "Properly" sized
fenders for the tires since the Racers greatly improve clearance for such.
RH Stampede Pass EL 700x32 tires. TA Zephyr crankset, now a wide-ish 46-34
double. Suntour AccuShift bar end shifters for their lovely micro ratchet
mechanism. In respect to the name (useful French sheep) and inspiration of
the model (French rando archetype) I have a Mavic 841 rear derailleur with
an 845 cage (the long cage road is goofy looking and the 845 parallelogram
plate has a garish sticker instead of the nicer laser etching in the black
anodizing), and Mavic 860 front derailleur. I have a set of Simplex DT
shift levers, but holy cow those bosses are WAY down there on my 62cm
frame.

My Rambouillet has been so much of what I want or need in a bike that I've
been riding it since new to me in 2001. It has acted as a pure road bike
and held its own in group riding, carried a load in a Carradice Nelson
Longflap with a Bagman support on a credit card trip across the country and
been my prime ride for lots of short and multi-day trips on the gravel of
the Great Allegheny Passage and rocks and mud of the C Canal path. The
orange, besides being the undisputed fastest color, has been a large part
of people approaching me and asking about the bike and where I'm riding. On
the Five Borough ride in NYC a few years ago my wife noted how sour folks
on some very expensive CFRP bikes in our riding cohort looked as my bike
drew a continuous flow of unsolicited compliments appreciating its
aesthetic and fit.

I have a project cooking that more precisely matches my dimensions, needs
and riding. It's custom, but the Rambouillet was so good of an off the hook
production option that I was able to avoid a bespoke bike for almost 20
years of riding. Consider yourself lucky if your body proportions are
satisfied by the standard frame size increment geometry. I don't and it has
left me unimpressed by lots of bikes that are supposed to be "all that".
This has been my magic carpet ride

[RBW] Re: Wild speculation on Hodges B. Gallop

2019-08-05 Thread ascpgh
Sounds like the Rambouillet. Road-ly, clearance for 32s under fender, three
cage mounts and capable of a light traveler's load, all without getting
wiggly. I feel like one of a few who've suggested this retired model is the
template of what you describe.

Mine last weekend:

My Rambouillet with the 700x32 Stampede Pass EL under fender. This was a
trip down the Great Allegheny Passage trail the other weekend. Lightly
packed and heavily watered for 150 miles of what you see here. Just out of
the Big Savage Mountain tunnel, near the Maryland state line.

Rambouillet good for two riding days of this. GAP trail, along the
Youghiogheny River.
