2019-11-07 Thread Justin Kennedy
I have a budget dynamo set-up on my commuter Cheviot. Shimano DH-3N dynamo
hub (under $100) with a Busch & Müller Eyc headlamp ($40 floor model). Rear
light is currently a USB Cygolite HotShot 100 lumen, but had a Dyno B&M
Rack-mount Light with Pulse previously when i was running a rear rack.

Very happy w/both of these set-ups. Have been using them for nighttime
and/or dark morning commuting for about a year with no issues. You can read
about the weight and efficiency differences b/t Shimano vs SON etc at Peter
White's website .

[RBW] Bicycle Lights for Commuting

2019-11-07 Thread Merrill Ryan
I have two Bontrager Ion lights and also 2 Nite Rider 700 lights. I like the
Ions the best and use them all the time. They are small, bright, have multiple
settings and flashing settings, plus are easily removed from the bike and
charge up quickly. They also work excellently as a flashlight...I was using one
last night when I was doing an oil change on the motorcycle. Can’t recommend
them enough.

Andrew, I don't think it was. I can't remember the name of my horse but it

our guide yelled at it & cracked his whip, sending my horse running. I
wasn't ready for that and my feet didn't really fit in the stirrups -- this
was much scarier than any of the cars on Cuban roads!

2019-11-07 Thread Chris Corral
Best value (being performance/cost) for me, would be a Busch+Muller IQ-X
with a Shutter Precision or Shimano dynamo hub. Pair it with your rear
light of choice from Busch+Muller.

TBH don't be afraid of battery powered setups. You just get spoiled with a
dynamo, but it is a high start up cost. A dynamo is a good option if you're
planning to ride every day in all conditions, and have a bike with other
accessories that improve your commute such as rack and fenders.

[RBW] It's getting to be that time of year again: Time to order stuff from Rivendell

2019-11-07 Thread Bill Lindsay
This quote sums it up better than most:

*"This is our specialty: Complicating life unnecessarily, going to a
Trouble Factor of 10 to achieve an Improvement Factor of 3."*

That's from Grant's latest BLAGH, talking about the sweater that is super
expensive, super difficult, that they won't make any money on. It's a
general fact about Rivendell. They have ideals and they spend every penny
to realize their ideals, and they price things so that they barely make any
money at all. Those who can afford the prices and appreciate the ideals
are thankful for Rivendell. Those who appreciate the ideals and can't
afford the prices try to find all the products second-hand, and sometimes
lament that the products are too expensive new, and too rare second-hand.
Those who don't appreciate the ideals dislike Rivendell as overpriced,
overbuilt, opinionmakers and other rude things.

It's true that Rivendell has always done things the "right way" in their
minds which usually is the hard way even when they go smoothly. The
projects they take on that don't go smoothly are excruciating. They put
themselves frequently, annually in tight financial spots every winter.
It's easy to say "that's their fault", but it's similarly easy to say that
it's our fault. We know this is the reality, so if we want them to stay in
business, then we can help them stay in business by buying the things they
have in stock over the winter.

So, this is my reminder to us all. Look around for things they have in
stock, especially the Garage Sale and Last Chance stuff. If you need any
of those things, buy something. For things you 'might need' someday, Try
to put 100 of them in your CART. If they have only 1, you'll see it, and
maybe you should buy it before they run out. If they have a TON of that
item, that's a ton of cash that they have locked on the shelf. Buying some
of that will free up that cash for them.

Here's a few things that got my attention:

There's a couple nice merino shirts in Garage Sale, that they still have in
Medium. They are warm, not stinky and last forever if cared for properly.
I might grab one of each
I'm going to buy a wide-low Silver 173mm crankset. It's heavier than a
Rene Herse crankset, and wider Q-Factor, but I'm certain it's just as
strong and will last as long, and is less than half the price.
I'm going to add a few bumper stickers, patches, a couple rolls of
Newbaums, and some Sheldons Nuts

Things I won't be buying but there are a lot of:

Tandem cranksets. They have 25 of them in stock. At $500 that's an
amazing deal on the nicest tandem crankset you can get for $500. If you
are ever going to set up a tandem, maybe you can see buying one?

Saddlesack bags. They have 18 of the Baggabond, 14 ClembaSacks and some
other things. They are really good sacks. I use a Shopsack Large as
weekend luggage all the time. I use a mediums as race day tool kits, and
another medium for a helmet and shoes race day bag. The things are bomb
proof. Bag-matchers may be mad that they don't have 4 different models all
in your color all in stock right now. Buy what they have, and be OK with a
little wabi-sabi.

There's lots of other stuff but I don't want to bore folks.

Happy shopping!

Re: [RBW] Bicycle Lights for Commuting

2019-11-07 Thread Patrick Moore
I'm curious if you dynamo users always carry battery supplements. I do; a
battery blinker (or steady light, for Sacula) in rear and a batter headlamp
in front; for "just in case" and, for the headlight, for use as a
flashlight if needed.

My dynamo systems are: SON 20R with Edeluxe I + Topline + button blinkie on
seatpost; SP + K-Lite + Sacula dynamo + Sacula battery; BioLogic (for 74 mm
fork spacing on Dahon; made by SP) and Lumotec IQ Premium and Topline and
button blinkie. Auxiliary headlamp is Ixon IQ Premium.

If many of you have put tens of thousands of miles on such dynamo systems
with nary a failure, I may start being less scrupulous about carrying
battery backups.

For my commuting I only use battery powered lights on the bikes I ride

Of course it depends on where you have to park!?
If you are parking on the street or in a public place, battery lights may be
the way to go.

Thanks!
They are tiny USB lights(front and back), I ordered from Blue Lug in
Japan. Also running a PB SuperFlash in the rear.
The light output is not exceptional. Two settings, on/flash. Good to "be
seen" in the city and not blind the other folks in the bike lane, but if
you need to ride where there aren't streetlights, you need some bigger
iron.
I also keep one mounted on the dropout on my Steamroller as a backup light
that I don't have to worry about and its too obscure/low to steal, they are
threaded on to the bolt on mount, see pictures in the link.

Re: [RBW] Sackville TrunkSack Small Mod

The issue with lights blinding oncoming cyclists and others isn’t really a
brightness issue. It has far more to do with how the light is directed and
focused.

High-quality lights from Europe (think B&M and Schmidt) almost always have a
reflector design that produces a beam that is pointed down toward the ground
and has almost no light projecting up and into the eyes of oncoming riders.
This is basically the same design as the headlights on a modern motor vehicle.
Point your car’s headlights at the garage door, and you should see a lot of
light below a horizontal cutoff, and almost no light above that line.

You can see the cutoff effect in this image from Peter White’s web
site:luxos-u-full1.jpg

The roadway is brightly lit, but look a little ways out and you’ll see that
only the base of the trees in the background are illuminated. If those were
ongoing cyclists, their wheels would be lit, but their eyes would not.

Most US-produced lights, by comparison, have a cone-shaped beam more like a
flashlight than a motor vehicle. Their light goes up, down, and side to side in
equal measure. It’s this type of light that has the greatest potential to blind
oncoming riders, since some of the light they emit will be pointed directly
into their eyes.

Peter White discusses this topic in more depth:
https://www.peterwhitecycles.com/plight.php

Peter also points out that there are some cases (like off-road trail riding)
where a “floodlight” beam without a cutoff works better. In most cases where
you’re dealing with other riders or motorists heading toward you, a cutoff beam
will light the road better and is more courteous to others.

So—don’t be afraid of bright lights! You can have great illumination and *not*
be “that guy” with the blinding headlight.

Re: [RBW] Bicycle Lights for Commuting

2019-11-07 Thread chris
Patrick, I have two dynamo systems that have both been on thousands of
miles touring, commuting, bouncing down rocks, and wading through rivers.

Never an issue. I do not carry any backup system. I have also never had a
problem with theft after years in Oakland, but I am careful where I lock
and always lock my front wheel. I have had the rear and seat post and
handlebars stolen, separately.

So, managed risks. I consider high quality dynamo tech (Shutter Precision
or Shimano) very reliable.
