[RBW] Re: Check your PMs

2020-02-14 Thread Craig Montgomery
I've been sitting here the last couple of days wondering if I should
email this guy and lecture him about common courtesy. He left me hanging.
As the seller I'd like to know what I'm going to do with what I'm selling
within a reasonable time period. Am I going to sell it to him or has he
lost interest? Which is OK. He doesn't even have to give reasons as long as
we both know what's happening. Then I know if I can a) keep it or b) put it
back on the market. As a buyer I have the responsibility to either complete
a transaction or let the seller know I'm changing my mind so he can move
on.
Fortunately, in my two decades experience on our lists, a no response
has been a very rare occurrence. Most the time we are all just like guys
hanging out in the garage. Keeping that in mind makes it easier to blow off
those individuals off who were raised improperly. Thank goodness we don't
need an Ann Landers hanging around all the time.

Beware that sealants can clog the valves to the point where you can't get
air in, even with a floor pump. I've had this happen, and had to remover
the core and use a wire to unclog the stem, and wash off the core. Perhaps
Orange Seal is worse for this than Stan's; which may be the shadow side of
its superior sealing properties, at least IME. (I am talking of the Stan's
sold circa 2013 or 2014.) This would be a real frustration out on the road.

I think Kai recommended this to me when I asked and it’s definitely the best

friend has it on a nitto rack and it requires a fairly burly adapter that also
negates both nitto and yepp warrantee/recommended limits.

You'd need a special piece, which also raises the rack height about 2", making
your load/kiddo sit higher= more leverage/trouble. Best to get a dedicated rack

Easy. Use an $8 rear derailleur.

*Running and ducking. I jest, I jest!*

In all seriousness, if times are slow, I can see Rivendell doing an
interesting one-off campaign and charging just enough to cover costs, with
the real goal of keeping the craftsmen ( Nobilette, Bell, Abele & co)
working. Such is their ethos. In any case, in the Blahg, Grant mentioned
that cost is controlled through modifying existing designs, and making most
details, including color, non-negotiable. Again, I'm intrigued as to what
will turn out!

i agree with this a lot. i sell bike stuff on instagram @adom_sale and it's
super annoying when I list a hot ticket item, one person responds with

sell it to the next person in line. too bad for the person who was first in

if you are prioritizing a city build, i'd go with the Homer or Sam. You
don't need the meaty tires of the Atlantis/Cheviot/Joe, and if you do
decide to do some offroad, the Homer & Sam are still great at it. The
bigger-clearance'd, stouter-tubed Rivendells might become annoying if you
are trying to zip through the city all the time. That said, they'd still be
pretty darn fun.

I think they should widen the tire clearance on a Homer, but keep the
lighter tube spec. This would be an all-day rider (not a tourer) but with
2.2" clearance for extreme fire roads and easier single track, a la Crust
Bombora or Black Mtn Cycles monster cross. Perfect bike for a mixed terrain
brevet.

[RBW] Rivendell friendly airbnb Sacramento to Fresno?

2020-02-14 Thread Justin Wyne
Howdy y'all

I'm driving south from Oregon and wondered if anyone in the bunch has or knows
of a rivendell friendly airbnb room available for the night? Close proximity to
a morning ride is a plus. My Rivendell and I are in Chico now and should be in
Sacramento round 6pm or Fresno round 9 I think.

This felt weird to post but then didnt. Some of the best folks I've met have
been on a rivendell so it seemed like a reasonable thing to inquire

I'm using Orange Seal in mine. I do notice a slight increase in effort

Thank you for the responses. Just now my work sent out a company wide
email that we're putting a moratorium on travel because of coronavirus and
corporate revenue concerns until further notice. So, I may not be

2020-02-14 Thread Mike Blackwell
Urban Adventours (https://www.urbanadventours.com/) in downtown Boston
rents decent road and cyclocross bikes. Friendly folks. A little on the
spendy side but you might be able to work out something reasonable if
you're renting the bike for a while. Worth checking out, anyway.

That time of year can be dicey weather-wise, but lots of great riding to be
had!

Re: [RBW] Re: Tire Recommendations for an All-Rounder

2020-02-14 Thread Patrick Moore
Curious: What sealant? I tried Stan's in tubes in fat tires (50 mm F Freds)
at ~25 psi or so, and found that the pressure insufficient to get the
sealant where it was needed. Same sealant in same tire but tubeless, no
problems at sub 20 psi.

My brother has had the same problems with Orange Seal in RTPs at ~30 and
has to pump the harder than otherwise would be preferred.

[RBW] Re: BEST REAR MOUNTED KID SEAT FOR HILLBORNE

2020-02-14 Thread David B
I'll add on about the Yepp Maxi, however with the caveat to get a rack that
fits the Easyfit window so no need for parts clamping to a different rack.
Here's my setup on a Clem - we have two of these setups - I'll likely be
looking to sell a rack/seat combo sometime soon if anyone's interested -
older child is ready to transition to something else.

[RBW] Re: Tire Recommendations for an All-Rounder

2020-02-14 Thread Gabriel Bruguier

+1 for RTP's! I've been commuting on the black walled EL version since
last October (with a bit of sealant in my tubes) and have had no problems
whatsoever with flats. I like 23 psi front/25 psi back. Every day that I
ride them I experience a renewed sense of appreciation. They're so smooth,
and so fast.

[RBW] Looking for an all-road bike to hire for a week in Boston area

2020-02-14 Thread Bill Lindsay
It looks like work travel will have me in and around Boston for the first
part of April. I've been riding a fair bit and would like to maintain
during my time back east as I'll be working up to a 400k later that month.
Ideally I would teleport my 56cm Hillborne back and forth, but I also would
entertain hiring a bike for that time. My instinct is to reach out to
Harris Cyclery, which I'll probably do.

My work activities will have me in Wilmington for a few days and then in
Boston the following week. I could conceivably weekend elsewhere in New
England for the riding.

What should I add to my list of considerations?

I'll second the rack-mounted Thule Yepp Maxi. (don't get the seat
tube-mounted version) Get a Nitto Big Rear Rack

 to
put it on and you're good to go.

Re: [RBW] In your opinion, what's missing from the Riv lineup?

2020-02-14 Thread hugh flynn
I agree with Dave - It's the single-speed option that's missing from the
line-up.

I've been getting by with a Surly Cross Check set up as a fixed gear for
the last 22 years, and I've missed every opportunity that Grant has offered
to buy a SimpleOne/QuickBeam over the years, but should they return to the
line up, I'd be sure to grab one.
