[RBW] WTB - Brooks Titanium Swift / Pro Saddle in Honey

2020-07-14 Thread Michael / SF
I'm on the hunt for a Brooks Swift or Pro saddle with titanium rails.
Ideally honey leather, although I will consider brown, but definitely no
black. I realize these have been out of production for awhile now, so I'm
just trying my luck on the lists. I can pay you, or we can discuss trading
Brooks saddles or other bike parts if you are looking for something
specific.

Let me know if you have something... cheers!

This is such a nice offer, but my local bike shop was able to find a bolt

Because I rode my bike to work when the original bolt broke. It broke just
as i was pulling in so I had to jury rig a replacement to get home. The
fix seemed to work and so I never got around to replacing it. The two
breaks were about a year apart. Since the bolt sheared off twice in the

saddle placement or other factors.

pipe insulation works well, hollow pool noodles are even better because
they're slightly more firm and also thicker than pipe insulation. Can be
used many times. They cost more than pipe insulation, but bikes are worth
it, right?

Re: [RBW] daily post ur riv

2020-07-14 Thread christian poppell
Hi Patrick,

Tires are 35mm. 38mm tires fit but the pinch point is between the top of
the tire and the underside of the brake (Shimano BR-6500).

Saddle to bar drop is almost nil. I'd prefer around 3 cm as its hard to
stay on the hoods while climbing out of the saddle.

Two curious things about the bike are the placement of the pump peg and the
lack of a chain hanger. Its almost like the pump peg was placed with a
level top tube in mind. There's about 1cm of a gap between the top of the
pump and the bottom of the top tube. The rear seat stay also lacks a chain
hanger which I prefer when taking the rear wheel out.

Still getting used to the bike and dialing everything in. Indexing has been
a slight pain up front with a modern derailer and TA rings. If I had an
extra derailer, the front would be friction on the downtube. It works OK
for now though. Still getting everything sorted out.

Patrick, that Matthews is a nice bike and I'm sure with those wide tire's
its well suited to your area. Those 60mm tires would still be fun around
here in the hard packed fire roads.

[RBW] Things I Regret: Beausage on Vacation

2020-07-14 Thread Surlyprof
Beausage is historical and liberating. Now that your bikes have some, you can
ride harder, go places you might not have gone before and worry less. That’s
liberating.

An amazing craftsperson I know, whose furniture goes for thousands of dollars,
told me that he expects and hopes his furniture displays every nick and ding as
a historical record of the events that occurred around it. I was reminded of
this when I was in Japan refinishing the first table I had ever built. I saw a
deep scratch in the top and remembered that it had happened the first week of
the table’s life when the most wonderful dog I’ve ever known heard a clap of
thunder. He leapt off the floor, pushed off the top of the table with his back
claw and ran to his favorite hiding place in the back of the house. The dog
passed several years before and I’ve always missed him. When I told my friend,
who had known him when he was alive, that story, she asked that I not sand out
that gouge.

My advice would be to view those scratches differently. Rather than beating
yourself up for a lack of bike packing prowess, reminisce about the time you
spent in Yellowstone with your family and the torrential storm you drove
through in Montana during that year’s vacation. You don’t get a repeat of that.

Viva la beausage!

[RBW] FS: 66cm Blue Rambouillet - Complete

2020-07-14 Thread Birdman
Attn: tall riders! I’m reluctantly offering a rare, blue 66cm Rambouillet for
sale. It comes complete (I’m not interested in parting out), as seen in the
photos, except I’m keeping the pedals. It’s a classic build with noodles, cross
levers, 120mm stem, and 32mm Paselas on Araya rims.

Photos here: https://flickr.com/photos/38306928@N00/sets/72157715097136002

This bike was clearly well cared for by the previous owner and seems to have
few miles. I’ve certainly ridden it sparingly and have always kept it garaged.
There are a few spots where touch up paint has been applied, but overall it
presents as a beautiful bicycle in fabulous condition, especially given its
age. Plenty of life left on the rims. No issues.

These 66cm Rams are rare. They only show up intermittently in frame charts of
that time period and I suspect that relatively few were made. I’ll include a
Rambouillet booklet with the sale.

I’m asking $1300 plus packing/shipping via Bike Flights CONUS. PayPal F
preferred.

Please reach out with questions,

Isaac in Portland, OR

+1 for getting a well-reviewed new seatpost, like this one Rivendell sells;
well, they're out of stock, but the shorter version is available on Amazon
and eBay. (I think that the Ritchey post is the same thing as the Nitto
S65.)

Despite my natural talent for overtightening things (just snapped an
admittedly lightweight seatpost collar the other day) I've never broken one
of these. And grease the bolt before installation!

>From your photo, it looks like you have a B-67 saddle (sprung, one clamping
rail, one support rail). If I’m wrong and you have one of the double
clamping rail saddles like the B-66, you’re using the wrong kind of seat
post. If it’s in fact a B-67, the seat post is correct, but the bolt is
wrong. It should be a hex/Allen head metric bolt with a washer, not
something with a nut. I suspect that the original bolt was lost and an
SAE/US bolt was forced/cross-threaded into the top of the clamp, with a nut
added to tighten it. I would only do that in an emergency where the only
bolt available was SAE and I was a long way from home, realizing that I’d
ruined my seat post and would need to replace it as soon as possible.
Either way, you should have a bicycle mechanic look at your bike and
install a new post that matches your seat design.

Super 77 spray glue. Way less expansive than Gorilla Glue. Wait for it

[RBW] Your Favorite Adhesive for Riv Cork Grips???

2020-07-14 Thread Paul Clifton
At one point Riv suggested some like permatex gasket stuff. Its great! It holds
the grips in place and I've been able to break them free and reuse them twice
now. I'll take a photo later if needed but it's at the auto parts store.

[RBW] Re: This is second time this happened and I am seriously annoyed. And I would like help to see this doesn't happen again.

2020-07-14 Thread James / Analog Cycles
Looks to me like an aftermarket hardware store bolt, which would have
dubious strength. Also 1 bolt posts are known for failure. The fix is
expensive but simple. A Nitto Jaguar or S83 seatpost, with original
bolts. I've sold hundreds, never seen a failure.
Also make sure the saddle is centered on the clamp. Pushing it back adds
leverage, and can lead to failure.

 A little bit unconventionally for a Rivendell (I think?) I mounted a

Still waiting on VO fenders, and a Nitto seatpost to match the stem.
The new G-One Speed tires are amazing, these are 50C and they roll so

Having trouble posting more than one image, will put-up more upon

[RBW] Re: Was the Hunqapillar designed for Albatross bars?

2020-07-14 Thread Marc Irwin
The Bosco Bars came the year following the Hunq. I bought my Hunq, rode it
for a year and ABSOLUTELY had to have a lighter version of the same
geometry, so I ordered a Hillborne. The first Bosco shipment was coming at
the same time as my Hillborne frame so I added those to the order. After
riding the Hillborne with the Bosco's and the Hunq with wide drop bars for
a season, I added Bullmoose Bosco's to the Hunq and lived happily ever
after. The Bosco's absolutely confound club riders when they see my
Hillborne at charity rides, it's hilarious.

[RBW] Re: XO-1 or Roadini

2020-07-14 Thread RichS
Zack,

No experience with a Roadini but a synopsis of
my current Rivs:

MIT Homer - Lightest of the three. Now this is only a guess based on past
observations from others on the list - the Homer and the Roadini frames
weigh about the same. No doubt about it, the Homer rides lighter and
snappier than my Sam and Atlantis. Note: for comparison my Homer and Sam
have identical builds and geometry.

MIT Sam - Handles a good bit like the Homer but its stoutness makes it more
akin to the Atlantis. In my experience what sets it apart from the Atlantis
are the 650b wheels and the angles.

MUSA Atlantis - Size 53 with 26" wheels. The Atlantis is in a class by
itself with the smaller wheels, less slack geometry, the term "planted"
comes to mind, and likely different tubing from the Sam.

Whichever Riv you decide on, you can't go wrong.

Best,
Rich in ATL

2020-07-14 Thread Mark Roland
Ann--did both times involve the same seat post brand and model? If so, what
was it? I assume the bolt and nut are original equipment. The fact that the
bolt tightens with a regular nut would indicate a cheaper model--or an old
seat post, which is not the case here. Its there something between the nut
and the top clamp other than a washer that "locks" it down?

If you still want to use this post, I would recommend getting the strongest
grade replacement bolt you can find--hard to know from a photo, but that
bolt looks cheap.

I have never heard of or seen this bolt break in 40 plus years of heavy
cycling involvement. If it were me, I would stay away from seat posts that
use a nut like that, and instead choose a model where the threads engaging
the bolt are integral to the top part of the clamp, or at least interface
with it more securely--some have a kind of oblong threaded piece that
securely nestles into the top of the clamp. If nothing else, this will
reflect a higher quality post overall.

Sounds like you should get a two bolt rather than a one bolt seatpost. The
