[RBW] What color frame would go well with orange bar tape?

2020-08-30 Thread Philip Williamson
That orange won’t really go with anything. Midnight blue maybe, as long as you
have something equally bright anywhere else on the bike.
To my eye, the strong red tape kills the subtle beauty of the sage green paint.
British Racing Green could hold up to that orange, but I’d get a similarly
bright seat bag or water bottles to tie it all together.

[RBW] Re: Derailer Pulley Question

2020-08-30 Thread Litho
I haven't tried WD-40, but will give it a shot. I spent a long time
figuring out that it was the upper pulley. Drivetrain noises are sneaky,
but I was able to reproduce the noise when I spun the upper pulley by hand.
Or rather, moved it. It didn't spin freely.

Thanks for the input, all.

Quick question for everyone. I have a nice XT derailer that I'm

from another bike because the squeaking was driving me nuts. I tried
everything I could think of but it always came back. My efforts included:

- Removing the pulley and cleaning it thoroughly.
- Lubing it with oil.
- Lubing it with grease
- Removing all lube and running it dry.
- Taking it apart again.
- Trying each of the above several more time.

I haven't replaced any of the parts yet. It's a ceramic bushing in the
pulley, not bearings. Any suggestions? Any recommendations on better
 pulleys I could swap in?

Re: [RBW] FS: 1984 Trek 850 - 22"

2020-08-30 Thread velomann
Sam,
Are you in Portland?
I have an 18' Trek 950 that's pretty much stock I was going to list on CL
soon, and a 19" 930 that I need to convert back to 26" wheels that will
also be listed soon. Both of these are lugged, US-made True Temper frames -
the good stuff. Not that Ant's 850 isn't good - the first mtb I ever bought
was an 86 850 in the red/black fade with chainstay U-brakes.

Re: [RBW] FS: 1984 Trek 850 - 22"

2020-08-30 Thread Joe Bernard
Sam, I'm 5-6 and I would barely get a leg over that thing, the seattube is
almost 56cm. As it's a mountain bike I presume the toptube length is crazy
long for us, too, especially with the reach of dropbars added. A 19" mtb of
that era is the practical limit for me, and even the '89 Ritchey I had in
that size was kinda huge on me.

Re: [RBW] Re: What color frame would go well with orange bar tape?

2020-08-30 Thread velomann
Spurcycle only makes raw and black as you probably already know. However
they have done 5 (that I know of) limited run collaborations with Chris
King, matching the clapper on the black bell to a King Anodized color.
First was blue, then red, then the CK Anniversary Olive Crate Green (those
were raw bells and they only did 200), then last year purple AND bourbon.
So an eventual run of black bells with orange clappers is not beyond the
realm of possible.

 Patrick,

It seems like you like the themes--the blue monochrome is so classy and
unusual in the perfect color matching. I love the look, even though you
say the tape needs to be changed soon.

The Sage Green with red tape and matched Ortiebs must look awesome
together. I like the color scheme without the Ortiebs, too.

That leaves the dark green bike, a more serious look. A pop of color
would make anyone smile. Is that an orange light or bell I spy on your
handlebars? Perhaps you were subconsciously noting orange would be a nice
 compliment.

I like Garth's idea of seeing the different shades of orange prior to
 the taping.

2020-08-30 Thread True Golden
What is it called when a woman climbs in or out  the pictured hole in the
ground on the decal?
I was reading that Berkley changed the name to remain gender neutral.
I could see a Clem in the family over the next year, such versatile machines
I'm sure currently enjoying my new to me Orange Sam, called SamWise Orangey and
no Riv should dwell alone...Right?
If you don't know who Samwise Gamgee is...well, if your a Rivendell fan please
look it up. It's essential knowledge.

Howdy,

Not a Riv, but I see a lot of Black Mountain Cycles chatter here so thought
I'd post. Happy to delete if OT.

I'm Road curious. If you have a 56 gathering dust, let me know. I'm open to
f/f/hs, complete, or somewhere in the middle.

Since PMing is funky with the new interface, feel free to email me off-list

Second, let me apologize if I've told my Clem story before, more than
once. I will keep it brief.

Clementine at sunset in 2016. It looks so...short. More photos here:
 https://goo.gl/photos/Xyf3kVj4ENcXVSiw5

Got an OC (Original Clementine), one of the last completes in the first
run. Frame was damaged, Riv sent a replacement, with the cream accents
 only
found on the framesets (now standard). Loved the bike, sold it to raise
some money I needed. Late in 2019, ended up with a bronze green Clem L.

Currently the only shot I have of El Clem with the new racing tires
from Rene Herse. Eventually will do a proper photo shoot.
More pics of the bike here if you haven't seen it:
 https://photos.app.goo.gl/qc6rMfoke1P8X9Dj7

I built it up similarly to my OC with fenders and racks. Since I
started with a frameset, I built a set of wheels and used a dynamo front
hub. Also, because I was planning to run 2.25" Thunder Burts, I bought the
widest VO 700c fenders and re-radiused them for 650B. The bike is
 basically
my car for local trips, with front and rear lights--and a brake
 light!--and
 my back o bike bags.

I will eventually basketize it, but currently that would make parking
it in the living room closet more difficult than it already is. Recently I
swapped out the tires for Rene Herse Switchback Hill EL (actually came
labeled Compass), with plans to use the Thunder Burts on my in process
Hubbahubbah build. Also, though I like the pink streamers, they are a bit
1980s prep with the green, so I am going to try this classic set:

2020-08-30 Thread Ian A
What about adding canti posts and touching up? Maybe you'd get 26"x1.6 Supremes
or something along those lines?

The Clem would offer more flexibility, but might not have the handling
characteristics you prefer.

2020-08-30 Thread Leah Peterson
Yes, I agree with Kim - Mark’s bike is a party. A party bike - that could be a
new designation/category!

Something unique that the Clems offer - freedom from pretense, and a defiance
of classification. Clems do not take themselves seriously; finery is not
required. There is no particular way a Clem was meant to look. Clems are
diamonds in the rough, hidden gems, unsung heroes. Do what you will with them;
they won’t complain. The Clem is the bike of the Lone Wolf!

When I took my Betty to the shop, she was a looker. Everyone knew she was a
classy gal, lugged and lovely, something really special. The Clementine (that’s
what I call my 2019 Clem L) at first glance appears to be a quality cruiser,
but once the mechanics put hands on it, they know their mistake. They start
noticing the seat lug and the “tough bike to love” and the manhole cover head
badge. There isn’t a man alive that hasn’t test ridden my bike and been
anything but impressed with it.

I’ve seen Clem Ls set up for mountain biking, commuting, kid-hauling,
pleasure-cruising. My Clem is a complete conundrum in that I’m using it as an
exercise bike but it’s set up to haul (I like how it looks with the racks and
basket and bags and yes, I’m not using them and it’s unnecessary but just let
me live). It’s rated to mountain bike standards, but has Gravel King slicks and
dyno and is a road queen. If you want to see Clem diversity, just search
#clemsmithjr on Instagram. They really are unwilling to be set into a single
category.

One iteration I’d really like to see is Clems for Kids. I started that hashtag
on Instagram and wish it would take off. If you invested in a Clem L, your kids
could have a lot of time riding it. I have a 45 Clem H for my boys and love it,
but the L version would be great because it would fit more sizes.

Enough of me, back to the 2020 Clem folks.

[RBW] Re: Derailer Pulley Question

2020-08-30 Thread George Schick
As a footnote to this thread, I've noticed that the original lubricant -
usually some kind of grease - that the manf. uses for these items tends to
harden after so many years. I had a problem like this with some rapid-fire
MTB thumb shifters, too. Took 'em apart, hosed 'em out with PB Blaster,
blew out the remains with compressed air, and replenished with Tri-Flow.
The started working perfectly again. Also, this appears to be a common
problem across the product lines with Shimano in particular.

[RBW] Re: Derailer Pulley Question

2020-08-30 Thread George Schick
PB Blaster works well for that, too. I had a derailleur with some of those
pulleys that stiffened up like that and shot some of into 'em. Then I blew
out the excess with compressed air and replaced it wth Tri-Flow lubricant.
They almost spin by themselves now.

Re: [RBW] 26" road/gravel tire shortage

2020-08-30 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks, Paul. 52 cm, so, theoretically (which means, imagining things
without actually looking at them) I might get a 2.1 Powerblock and no
fenders into the new Matthews frame build for 45s + fenders.

I hope things don't come to that, but should Rene Herse tires (Elk Pass and
Naches Pass) and the 26" X 1.25 and 1.75 Paselas disappear, then I'd have
recourse.

[RBW] Just a thought: Building up that 2003 Curt Goodrich 26"-wheel custom as a Rivendell cruiser ...?

2020-08-30 Thread Patrick Moore
I had offered it for sale, but I've often thought that it would be nice to
have a "hop on and go" "sit up and beg" cruiser bike, and while sure, it
would be nice to own a Clem for this sort of riding, I've got a Riv custom
frameset hanging on the wall.

Here're the rest of my thoughts. It was built for caliper brakes, but I
could build it with a fixed drive train, thus eliminating the need for a
rear brake, or I could use a coaster brake rear wheel -- or drum rear
wheel, for that matter. For the front, I could have the wheel built with a
drum brake, or even find a pair of those very elusive clamp-on cantilever
brake bosses.

Without constraints of calipers I am pretty sure I could get a 42 in there,
thus RH Naches Passes or 1.75 Paselas. No fenders, though, which would be a
major point "contra."

B 67 saddle, Albastache or perhaps Bullmoose or even Surly Open without
rise on longer-reach stem.

The frameset has f and r racks and lighting wire guides.

Handling would be affected, but the more upright position's effect on it
might be moderated by using a bar like the Albastache that offers a
"bend-forward" position. (IIRC, sta = 73*, hta = 72.5*, don't know rake or
trail, but guess it's medium trail. 58 X 57 c-c but with what, 3*?
upsloping tt and high head.

What do y'all think?

Really, the absence of fenders is the principal argument against the idea.

Re: [RBW] Re: What color frame would go well with orange bar tape?

2020-08-30 Thread Patrick Moore
I will do that. BTW, until you pointed it out, I didn't even know that the
color of the headlamp was orange; I thought it was gold -- somewhat color
blind (which raises -- doesn't "beg") the question, why am I so exercised
about orange tape? Answer: the orange of the tape is a much more obvious
orange, at least to me.

BRG and Molteni Orange has got to be a winning combination. Photos once I
receive and install the new bar.

Next: Need to find an orange Spurcycle bell to replace the black one.

But which green one, BRG or Sage Green?

I lean toward the BRG bike if only because I primly match my bar tape
to my red Ortiliebs on the Sage one.

 Thanks.

[RBW] Re: Derailer Pulley Question

2020-08-30 Thread Garth

I have a M739 that has those "sealed" pulleys that squeaked. They
pulleys were quite stiff to turn by hand. I had never done any So I decided
to "play nice" and take one apart, clean thoroughly and relube with some
Phil oil. I put it back on the bike and it was still stiff. Well sheesh. So
the other one I decided to just squirt some WD-40 and both sides and work
it in, so to speak. That one started spinning freely quite quickly, so I
sprayed the other one too and it was now spinning freely. Three cheers for
squirting WD-40 directly in the pulleys zero cheers for taking them
apart and trying to be all "proper" about it.

So try squirting some WD-40 on both inner sides and spin 'em around.
