Great story, Leah! Welcome to the list, Pam! I hope you’ll visit us once
in a while (on the list, that is) and send us some Riv news.

I have been so inspired lately by one Pamela Murray out of Charlotte,
who rides a tiny 2011 Betty Foy. She is known to her community for her
 bike
activism and her bike safety course, Cycling Savvy. We “met” on social
 media.

The reason I find her so inspiring is her impressive mileage on her
Rivendell. She began riding an Electra Townie (2006, I believe) and put
5800 miles on it. In 2011, she bought her Betty Foy and she has now logged
an impressive *50,200* miles on her Betty.

50,200 miles. Since 2011. Just take that in for a moment...

Pamela rides rain or shine, everywhere, and for any reason. While some
of us are obsessing over n+1, upgrades, or aesthetics, she’s out there in
the true spirit of Rivendell, riding the wheels off her Riv and inspiring
her community to do the same. You can see her around town hauling pieces
 of
furniture she finds curbside, or donating 85 pounds of food she hauled for
Cranksgiving, growing her “bike benefits” program, and teaching others to
 safely cycle in the city.

Pamela is half my size and 5x as tough, and I doff my polka dot Nutcase
helmet to her. She. Is. The. Queen.

PS I had Pam’s permission to post this thread and her photos.

2020-12-17 Thread Pam Bikes
In additon to all of the above, I like to put a little bit of air in the
new tube prior to putting it in so that it doesn't get twisted. Just
enough to hold its shape. Don't screw on the locking nut too much if you
use them, it'll stress the valve stem. Take your time and sit down and be
methodical. I don't like getting flats so I have Schwalbe Marathon
Supremes. I don't have many flats on my bike but have had plenty on my
family's bikes to repair. BTW I patch all my tubes - some more than once.
And ride with them.

Yes my math was bad. I ordered the frame Aug 2002 and it was delivered Feb 2003.
I requested the front rack braze-ons for a front rack. At the time Rivendell
had not done this. I had to send a drawing of where to put them. Now they are
standard.
I also requested an extra low bottom bracket. I’m not sure they would do that
again because there is an issue with pedal strikes while cornering. I don’t
pedal thru fast corners (I enjoy coasting!)

I have a carpenter that I’ve used for many years, he does excellent work.

 There are two things.
One. Push the entire tire, both sides, to the center of the rim off of
the bead seat before inflating so that you can see that there is no tube
 under the tire.
Two. inflate the tire in stages - 1st inflate the tire to 15-20 PSIG
and then inspect the tire to rim interface. On all tires, there is a
molded-in, small, raised line around the tire just above the tire-rim
interface. At low pressures, this may still be below the rim, if there are
any places where this line is a noticeable distance from the rim, it may
indicate a problem - deflate, inspect, adjust. As you raise the pressure
 in
stages the line should eventually even out at a constant distance from the
rim as it seats on the rim - you can pull on the tire at the low and
intermediate pressures to help it out. Some tires seat immediately, some
require a lot of fiddling. It may require going to the tire maximum
pressure to seat the tire. Then you can release pressure as required. This
is generally only required for new tires, they kind of take a set as they
 break in and stretch.

[RBW] Re: Can anybody ID this saddle bag support rack?

2020-12-17 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch
It’s a Nitto uplift, though I don’t know the number. Uses the same seat
post clamp as the R10.
I used it with a Carradice Barley bag on the GAP and C trails, Pittsburgh
to DC. Got mine at one of the Riv yard sales a dozen years ago.
Interestingly, it had the same HB tape wrappings to keep the bag straps
centered.
Recommend that you Loctite the single M8 bolt — There is a lot of stress on
it! Mine loosened up with all the jouncing and stripped the threads. Once
back home I got an M10 bolt and tap and retapped the aluminum clamp.
Also recommend that you run a strap from the saddle rails to the top of the
hoop as extra insurance.
Best,
David Lipsky
Berkeley, CA

Re: [RBW] Re: 19-year old Riv

2020-12-17 Thread James Valiensi
Thanks for the kind words.
The Rene Herse crankset was on my list of most wanted parts for many years
before I pulled the trigger.
It gave me a bunch of grief. It came loose several times. It wasn’t the 1st
time I mounted a taper spindle crank set. I’ve done hundreds of times. The only
time one came loose for me, was the very first time I did it. I couldn’t
believe this one. I ended up using a breaker bar to tighten it down.
This was the end of my desire to send Jan Hein any more money. He has
absolutely no customer service. No phone number listed, no responses to
multiple emails, no help or support. He has all my contact info but refuses to
give his out. He has nice parts, too bad they are not sold by better people.

Let's hope he's happy, healthy and too busy riding to chime in. A divisive

I was astonished to find had such strong viewpoints that ran counter to
mine. To each their own. Raising a glass to Deacon now.

Actually, I think the red pedals are kinda cool. Touch of whimsy? Always
neat to see an "old bike" that looks brand new & is well maintained.

I took delivery of my Atlantis in April '03, but it looks like an old
delivery van compared to your bike. I used to do an annual paint touch up
but gave up after a few years. Let's just say it's well traveled & looks
it.

[RBW] Re: Inspiring Riv Riders: Pamela Murray

Talk about a working bike. That chair thing is impressive. This shows the
versatility & utility of Rivendells, and the creativity of people who ride
them. She's a great example.

Re: [RBW] 19-year old Riv

2020-12-17 Thread James Valiensi
Hi,
I’m a regular parts changer, I like to try different combinations. But this is
really close to the first build.
The fenders and headset are original. The shifters are the same thing, but new
because the originals are missing parts.
The wheels are about ten years old. They are lightweight for racing bikes but
are strong and feel super fast.
The tires are a Specialized cottons. Its my second set, I worn one set out this
year. I highly recommend these tires.
The rear derailleur came with my wife’s Clementine. I replaced an older Ultegra
long cage with it and was surprised to find a noticeable difference in chain
drag. The bigger wheels do make a difference.
The 1st Brooks saddle was replaced in kind.
The Campy Nouvo Record seat post has a filing job, that I learned from the late
Brian Baylis.
Original brakes where Shimano long reach, then Velo Orange came out with the
Grand Creu billet jobs. They are very good brakes. I just got the Paul levers,
the high polish remind me of Harley Davidson parts.

I’ve tried a front rack and this bikes handling get much worse with it on.
Actually, the steering on this bike is not neutral. It likes to dance around
and tucks in towards the center of curves. It takes me a few rides to get use
to it, if I don’t ride it regularly. Grant & Curt blew it here.

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: Bikes on eBay, CraigsLIst, and Other Sites

2020-12-17 Thread Alex K
Not to beat a dead horse, but Clems are $900 for the frame, $1650 for the
very very reasonable stock Riv build, and it would be hard to get out of
Walnut Creek without spending at least $2300 on a custom build ($900
frame/$1400 build including the $250 minimum labor fee.) So, a new
non-stock, fully-built Clem could not really ever classify as a $900 bike.
Not saying I agree with any of the stylistic choices made on this
particular build, but I hate to see anybody lose money, especially on this
forum, where I've had such good fortune with buying and selling, and have
seen and experienced no small amount of altruism. Hoping the seller
recoups some of their cash!

P.S. If anybody has a "$900 Clem H' laying around, I'll take 2!

[RBW] ISO- Banana bag

2020-12-17 Thread Rich Powers
I'm looking for a Banana bag in good condition or better. I see Riv. have
new blue bags, looking to see if there is anything else a bit more
budget-friendly. I am flexible on color and brand, I know there have been
many variations over the year. I suspect this is a tough ask, seems they
are in short supply. Cash or lots of random trade items!

What do you have??

I leave my bars noticeably crooked when the bike is in the stand so I know
I will have to straighten and tighten them before my test ride.

 Hey all!
I just threw on Schwalbe Marathon Winter tires (700x40) on the
Atlantis. Sad to see the Shikoros all deflated and and sitting in the
corner, but it was either they take a timeout or I don't ride to work. Easy
 choice.

So I've been riding as an adult over a year now and started with an
affordable Linus with 28mm tires and promptly got a flat my third or fourth
time out on it. I took the wheel over, unseated the bead, got the tube out,
patched it, put it back in, reseated the bead, yadda yadda yadda, BOOM. No
issue. Had another flat this last summer and had to repair it while on the
way home from picking up a crowler of beer...very stressful, almost lost my
wrench, but got it done, not a problem!

Later this last summer as piece-by-piece Riv'd up my Linus, I wen to
35mm tires. Took off the old ones, did all the steps, and as I was pumping
up the front tire, the tube blew out (some tube was under the bead...DOH!).
So I laughed it off, changed the tube, did the rear wheel, and went out for
a ride. All was going well, then on a fast descent, when I started breaking
I heard an awful thud-thud-thud-thud that was getting louder and BANG! I
screwed up the back wheel, too! So re-did both tires, used soapy water,
thought about using talc, but I couldn't find any locally and Sheldon Brown
says it does nothing...I never had another problem.

So I guess I'm wondering this (if you've managed to read this far)...at
what point can you be absolutely sure that tube is not pinched between bead
and rim? Can you ever be sure? is my bike a ticking time bomb? :)

Just wanted to share my neurotic thoughts as I rode to work, traversing
ice for the first time ever!

2020-12-17 Thread Eric Daume
I think Joe is still on the high side. Pre-Covid, a used stock Clem H is a
$900 bike (bought and sold my own around that price). This is a nicer build
and crazy times, but not THAT much crazier. I’m guessing $1600 or so is
where it will land.
