Which - to be clear - is my response to the premise of the thread which is
the premise of the Path Less Pedaled thing. I'm not objecting to the thread
being a thread.

I don't think a Riv vs. anything low trail really counts as a comparison,
it's two very different approaches to what is considered the "right" way
for a bicycle to handle. But my bias is extreme, I bought a Crust Lightning
Bolt (disc) and hoo boy did I learn the expensive way that I do *not *like

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: Clem Smith Jr. L 59cm Mustard

2021-02-10 Thread Collin A
I think that was my old Clem. I got away with using a knurled 26.8 seatpost
(riv performed it without charge and payed for shipping too!). Other option
is using a 27.0 seatpost, but I think options for that are even more
limited.

I.e. don't worry about it too much. There are solutions if you end up with
the 2017 run of Clems if that is all that is out there right now.

The crappy electrical tape the LBS used to tape my dyno wire under my

wheel, which I have never ever done - and clean the fender (I’m thinking
with alcohol) and then try to secure the wire until the good tape arrives

 a

I’m going to watch like 15 YouTubes tonight. Wish me luck.

Well after seeing all these great builds, I decided to pull the trigger on
a Susie frame this week. It was down to a blue 51 and an orange 53 since I
could fit either one. I went with the orange seeing as I have the blue
(well blue-green) covered with an Atlantis. Excited to build this bike up!

Richard Thompson is of the best I’ve seen. And a great songwriter. Right now
I’m leaning towards Robert Fripp but it’s hard to argue against Thompson.

As far as bikes go, for me old Riv > Crust while Crust > new Riv. I can’t

[RBW] Re: Leah Takes a Stand

2021-02-10 Thread Doug H.
I never enjoy removing the rear wheel on a geared bike, the derailleur just
doesn't play well for me. On my single speed it's easy peazy!

[RBW] Re: mounting sunrace shifter on stem

2021-02-10 Thread Tim Baldwin
I don't ride drops but I'm a fan of the stem mounted front shifter. I have
a thumb shifter on the right and a bell where the left shifter would go. I
use the bell more than the front shifter. Joe, the bar end mirror is a
great idea for the left side. Gotta have a mirror.

Ray, are you using the stock post that comes with those frames? I
encountered this issue on several MIT Rivs with the 26.8 post that passed
through my hands and solved the problem every time with a Nitto post. Those

Just want to chime in and say that if you do go with the Mustard Clem H, I
think you should know that generation of Clem had an issue with the
seatpost lug not clamping well. Maybe they got it sorted out with later
stock, but my mustard clem h that I bought from someone on the group here
recently had this issue and it was a real pain. Seatpost would just

Writing this out now, I feel like they surely couldn't still be selling
frames with this issue, but I wanted to call it out just in case.

Yeah that's a chunk of change, plus whatever shipping would be. For that
kinda money you could order an L from Riv (when they're back) and have

[RBW] 11 speed with Silver DT shifters works great!

2021-02-10 Thread Andrew Turner
I'm sure to most, this is a 'no duh' situation but throwing my hat in for
the approval vote regardless. If there are any die-hard 9 speed friction
fans out there like me, this might be of interest.
Before I thought:

A) the Silver DT shifters don't pull enough cable to fit 11 speed
B) I'd be spending the majority of the ride feathering the gears

Wrong and wrong. It works shockingly well, perhaps even better than 8-9
speeds perhaps because there's simply less room to mess it up. Now I
probably wouldn't enjoy it as much with shifters that didn't utilize the
ratcheting system since I can feel how the ratchet sorta auto-corrects the
right engagement point when I'm changing gears but that's a topic of
personal taste.

My setup is an Ultegra 6800 long cage rear mech, 11 speed chain, 11-34 105
cassette, and a Grand Cru 50.4 46-30 crankset.

Obviously the downside of all this is cost but if anyone was building up
something new and was 11 speed friction curious, give it a shot!

To me it makes sense on a drop bar if you want to get rid of one leg-poker
and a long loop of cable from a shifter you hardly use. It also frees up
that spot on the bat for a small mirror, I never ride without one. Move
that shifter outta your way!

And to add, the Sunrace thumb shifter can be mounted directly to the quill

different shifter mount as quill stem and bar diameters are the same.

neat. I love the idea of single-batch collaboration runs like this, and it
would be cool to see more of them. I tried to publicly connect Ocean Air
Cycles and Rivendell to spark a MIT run of their Rambler frameset but it
didn't work haha.

I imagine that collaborative frame being fairly sporty tubing but tons of
tire clearance, and pretty long in the TT for upright bars or zero-reach
drop setups

[RBW] Re: mounting sunrace shifter on stem

2021-02-10 Thread David B
Not exactly the question you asked, but if you have space in the headset
area, the Riv thumb shifter can be mounted as a headset spacer, so not
attached to the stem quill, but in the same general area. I did this so I
can swap handlebar setups without changing shifters.

[RBW] FS: Giro Trousers, Randi Jo Hats

2021-02-10 Thread Michael Ullmer
Cross post from i-Bob:

Final purge through the clothing for now:

1) Giro Mobility Trousers Blue Size 32 - $40 shipped
--I had the bottom portion of the legs of these pants narrowed by a
professional tailor, so they're more of a slim fit through the whole leg.
These have a lot of great features, reflective accents on the inside,
gusseted crotch, zippered side pocket. They're in great shape, but now that
I'm no longer going into the office, I don't need these (I have two).

2) Randi Jo Fab Hats - Linen and Cotton (both size large) - $30 shipped
--I have far too many of Randi Jo's hats and these two get the least use.
The black linen one has only been worn a handful of times and the blue
cotton one slightly more. The blue cotton hat has the faintest sweat mark
on the front (doesn't show up in the picture), though you can't tell under
a bike helmet. $30 shipped for the pair.

Some interesting ideas here!

Mark says: "Clapton, Page Beck, or Mick Taylor. (It's obviously Peter

about Supergroups. So maybe I am thinking too small here... What about a
collaboration between Grant, Matt, and JP? Petersen, Whitehead, and

The actual video is a lot less provocative. Basically Russ comparing
his Hillborne to his Bombora. Still interesting, but maybe less so than it
 could be?

I imagine Crust and Rivendell must get compared to each other a lot. I
know that their the only two bike frames I currently own and ride, so I do
it more or less constantly. I imagine that this is partly due to Matt &
Bene purposefully designing the Romanceur frame with the Rivendell
aesthetic in mind. I think Russ sort of touches on that, when comparing
 the
Bombora to the All City and the Hillborne to the Richtey. He seems to be
saying, the Ritchey/All City aesthetic lacked something the Riv/Crust
 bikes
 had.

Anyways, I think of Crust as threadless, disc, and low trail compared
to Rivendell with rim brakes, quill stems, and high trail. Like most
thing's not hard and fast (see: Canti Lightning Bolt). What's your hot
 take
 on the two?

I think both bike companies are really doing some amazing and important
stuff for the bike industry. What I think would be really interesting
collaboration between Grant and Matt. Maybe something along the lines of
the Soma San Marcos, but both providing inputs. That'd be really cool!

Mark,

As for seat post, I picked up a NOS Shimano black one on eBay.Thanks to
Analog, I even got a powder coated black Mark's rack. Haven't had a chance
to mount it yet. Will post pictures once that's attached. I replaced the
Bosco with Nitto B604AAF Promenade black from Soma. So, other than the
front derailleur, there's no noticeable chrome part. There doesn't seem
to be any good FDs in black color out there.

[RBW] Re: mounting sunrace shifter on stem

2021-02-10 Thread Jim S.
Thanks for the response! Yes, must have been a Will email.

I'm building up a Sam, with drop bars. I know I'll almost never shift to
the small derailer as the chainrings are 38 and 24. I was trying to figure
out if there's a benefit to the stem mounted front-derailer shifter and
drop bars. I suppose the primary benefit is freeing up handlebar space on
say, an albatross bar. I wonder if it makes sense to go this route with
drop bars? Any thoughts? The novelty alone appeals to me, but novelty is
not enough if it's otherwise pointless.

frame or complete bike that they're interested in selling. My PBH is 78.5
cm, so I'd be looking for a 47 cm current design, maybe a bit larger for an
older version (unless I don't understand the sizing of the older versions).

I have a Surly Disc Trucker, but the beauty of the Atlantis is calling to
me to replace the Surly and maybe have a touring bike I enjoy using more
when it doesn't have a full load on it.

I could also be interested in other similar Riv models that would be a good
replacement for the Trucker, if someone has something else that may fit the
bill. Say, an Appaloosa, or a Hillborne.

I'm up for shipping a bike to me in Reno, or I could drive a ways to pick
it up, if that influences the deal.

Thanks,
Keith

Thanks Olivier. Is that an Origin8 housing/cable stop similar to this?

[RBW] Re: Rivendell vs Crust! Which is Better?

2021-02-10 Thread Ben Mihovk
I have an Atlantis and I am very interested in Crust. I just think they're
cool as all get out. If someone gave enough money to go buy a new Crust
Bombora and build it up, I'd probably just go look for a Rambouillet in my
size :)

Everything that Russ says about the differences in the Riv make me think
that Crust isn't for me. I like "chill, supple, laid back." Even if I want
to go find a lighter frame to try drops and faster riding, I'd still
prioritize the things that Riv does that other's aren't (rim brakes, quill
stem, geometry that accommodates upright posture, etc...).

Love Russ and his videos. I look forward to his video updates almost as
much as I do blahgs.

Re: [RBW] Re: Paul Racers on a Cheviot?

Ive seen this done with other Cheviots as well. You can put that cable
stop much closer to the seat tube, though. I guess with the guides on the
bottom of the top tube you'll need to put on a dia-comp housing holder or
something similar to run it along the top.

[RBW] Re: Leah Peterson Takes A Stand

2021-02-10 Thread Tom Wyland
Good for you, Leah! I serviced my first headset and bottom bracket last
fall. It felt good.
I have a fender-mounted taillight but always wound the wire under the
bottom bracket, out the non-driveside chainstay and out the fender
support. Aesthetics aside, I never understood the under-fender approach.
It seems like it it would leave the wire open to damage by rocks or ice
chunks getting kicked up under the fender. I guess that's not too
different from under-bottom bracket damage potential.

[RBW] Re: Paul Racers on a Cheviot?

2021-02-10 Thread 'Je Mar' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi Justin,

I ran Paul Racer's on my Chev (thanks, Jon Dukeman of CO!) for awhile
before I picked up some R559s. Riv sells a little clamp-on cable stop (tho
i don't see it on the site now) that can be mounted down near the pump peg
(if I recall correctly) to accept the housing to work with Racers. I'm
only a hack-plus wrench and I was able to do it, so I imagine the more
gifted among us would have no probs.

Good luck,
Jeff in Arlington, VA

Re: [RBW] Re: To My Platypus People!

2021-02-10 Thread lconley
I live in Florida and have never seen a Rivendell in Florida that I didn't
own at one time. I gave my wife my Betty Foy and gave one of my sisters my
Roadini.
I never saw another Rivendell in Washington State when I worked there for
28 months over 3 years a while back.
The only other Rivendells that I have seen were in South Carolina in 2019
for the 25th anniversary ride and at Rivendell Headquarters a year or two
before that (while I was working in Washington State - I was close enough
to make the pilgrimage).
I am not as successful at conversions as BBDD.

[RBW] Paul Racers on a Cheviot?

2021-02-10 Thread Justin Kennedy (Brooklyn, NY)
I've used Tektro R559's on my Cheviot from the start but was recently
considering upgrading to something different due to a slight but annoying
mechanical issue on the front caliper. (The release lock is stuck so in
order to remove the front tire, I have to fully deflate and squeeze it
between the pads.)

I noticed on Will's Staff Bikes page that he has a Paul Racer on this Chev

but only up front. Guessing it's because the rear geometry wouldn't allow a
hanger placement for a center pull?

Has anyone else used this set up? Do Paul Racers have clearance for 700c x
50mm tires? The tires in Will's pic look pretty wide and he's running a
fender too so it seems like there would be plenty of room. Thoughts?

I noticed that Rivendell wrote up a new product description for their
Platypus. “...the most beautiful bike in our line” - if that doesn’t make
you want to buy one, I just don’t know what will. (Also, I winged the
grammar in that sentence, woah...)

Small town North Dakota doesn’t know about Rivendell. Or any bikes, really.
When
my parents visited Rivendell with me in 2018, Mom fell in love with a light
sage Cheviot, so she bought it. Mom’s next-door neighbors just happen to be
bike people, but they don’t presently own bikes. They are about my parents’
age, early 60s and they once rode coast to coast, a trip they remember
fondly. Mom’s Chev was exactly Linda’s size, and Linda tried it out and
loved it. When Mom left for a couple weeks this fall, Linda confessed she
had taken the Cheviot and had been out riding it (in ND this somehow does
not qualify as stealing 😂). She fell hard for that little Chev, and as a
result, she’s getting a Platypus. She says it’s the first time she’s been
excited about a bike in 30 years! She’s getting the blue. What a thrill it
will be to show up this summer and pose with her for pics of our Platys. I
know so few people in my “real life” who have Rivs, so what a gift.

2021-02-10 Thread Ryan M.
I always enjoy Russ' videos and this one was also worth the watch. I've
never ridden a Crust Bombora and can't compare it to my Rivs, so it's nice
to get a comparison by someone who owns both.

I've always liked the way my Rivs ride, and I've been through a few of
them.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell vs Crust! Which is Better?

2021-02-10 Thread Fullylugged
Several frame makers over the years have copied (or tried to) the Rivendell
design DNA. V-O, New Albion, Handsome and Rawland come to mind before the
more recent Crust. I rode someone's Norvindian and was surprise how UNLIKE
my Riv it actually rode. I built a New Albion for a cousin and liked it
(especially at its price point) but also, easy to tell the difference in
ride. Riv has evolved significantly since its beginning. A Long Low or
Road does not ride anywhere near the same as a current long stay, slack
angle, fat tire Joe Appa, Clem or even a Hillborne. I think, as Riv often
says in their own ad copy, all their bikes still "have that Rivendell
feel." I tend to agree with that.

As to which is "better," taste is always in the sense of the taster. I lean
towards Rivendell and still recommend them to other riders looking for
comfortable, useful bikes that are also rolling works of art.
