Re: [RBW] Re: Clem Smith Rear Drop Outs

2021-04-14 Thread Justin Kennedy (Brooklyn, NY)
UPDATE. Turns out a 26" wheel on a 52 Clem L does not work with a regular
V-brake or canti brake. There may be a way for it to work with some other
set up but I'm going with the mullet set up - 650b up front and a 26" on
the Xtracycle Free Radical extension. Just waiting on the new wheel to
arrive.

[RBW] Re: Adding _____ to your handlebars to create an ovalized "flat" spot

2021-04-14 Thread Lefebeaver
I have done a lot of work on the dirt-drop bars on my Atlantis (Dajia Far
Bars from Velo Orange) to aleviate numb fingers... a friend several years
ago had a new specialized bike that had nicely shaped bars, so I looked
into it, and discovered a Specialized product called Bar Shapers, which
were rubber bits that had an inner radius the size of a bar, and then had
thicker area in the middle. They came in two thicknesses, 4 pieces per
package, around $7 per package I believe. I think this product is no longer
made, but twice I've found old stock at random bike shops and had them
mailed to me. This combined with a gel pad along the top of the bars, does
the trick for me - gives a nice wide flattish area where my hands rest
most often - on the bar tops or on the hoods. So google Specialized Bar
Shapers and see if you have any luck!

[RBW] Steal of a deal: Three (3) NIP Elk Pass tires for price of 2; or trade 3 NIP Elk Pass tires for 2 Naches Pass ELs

2021-04-14 Thread Patrick Moore
Some years ago when the Elk Pass first appeared, fearing that they would
disappear from the market in the 26"-wheel-road bike apocalypse, I bought
-- let's just say, a large quantity.* Afterward, the NP appeared, narrow
enough to use on a road frame, so even though I have used up 1/4 of my
stock, approx, I still have too many of the former.

The EPs are $84 each; you get 3 for $168 + shipping or, as I said, in trade
for 1 pair (=2) only of NP ELs, also new or as new.

Thus the offer. Please contact offlist.

* 24, but don't tell anyone.

[RBW] Clem's mount for rear wheel lock.

2021-04-14 Thread David B
I purchased my Clem in the first round pre-sale, and up until now I haven't
thought about the mounts for a Dutch-style rear wheel lock. However, I'm
seeing some use for it now, with short trips within my neighborhood. Really
just for running in somewhere for a few seconds with bike in view.
Anyone used one on a Clem? Your thoughts on whether it's 'worth' it or not?
Max tire/fender clearance?
Thanks,
David

[RBW] Re: Intro from Pittsburgh

2021-04-14 Thread joshuamarx
Hello Bob!
I hope you're enjoying Pittsburgh. Like Andy and Rusty, I'm a fan of
Kindred on Penn in the Strip District. I've also used the Iron City Bikes
Butler Street location quite a bit, since it's several blocks from my
house. Fern Hollow is further east out in Point Breeze--I always enjoyed
working with the owner, Nick, during the shop's previous incarnation as
Love Bikes in Lawrenceville. They do vintage restorations, and there are
usually some beautiful bikes there.

I've been able to get a few shorter rides in in the past few weeks (mostly
picking up 4-packs at some great local breweries, which is as good a way as
any to plan a ride, I guess).

It's funny that you should comment on our bicycling infrastructure. Upon
reflection, I guess it really has come a long way. I guess, as a local, I
don't notice the incremental changes so much but they add up. Our local
advocacy org, Bike Pittsburgh, does a great job!
Best,
Josh

2021-04-14 Thread Gabriel DeFelippis
Bob,

I would suggest checking out Kraynicks but they might still be doing the
majority of their work outdoors as the space is rather confined. Still
worth checking out and Rocky is a nice guy that will help you out with
anything. The previous owner was quite a character too. For an historic
shop its worth checking out. We are lucky to have so many good bike shops
currently.
Beyond checking out bike shops definitely check out Frick Park.
Also, you may see me cruising around soon in my Clem L once I get the bits
and pieces all put on there.

? They are a bike co-op and
have several bins of used parts including the ones you need. My wife and I
recently did a build for her new VO polyvalent frame
 and found some good bargain
parts ($10 HB, $5 stem, $15 sugino triple).

Re: [RBW] Re: Intro from Pittsburgh

2021-04-14 Thread Robert Cantoni
Andy and Rusty, thanks for the recommendations. I'm staying on the north side
and so far I've been exploring the bike paths up and down the river. I've made
it to the ends of the trails on the north side, but haven't explored the south
side down to the GAP yet. That's on my list this week. I've also been up to
Riverview Park.

I had the opportunity to stop into Bear Dog bicycles here on the north side the
other day, and they liked the Rivendell on sight but it was new to them. Which
is totally fine. I'll stop by Kindred Cycles and check out their selection —
I'm looking for racks and lights.

Andy, I'd be happy to go for a ride this week or next. Glad to hear you're back
on the bike!

Roberta: bite-sized GAP rides sound like a good idea. My wife and I are
thinking of doing a one-night ride on the GAP this summer. I had assumed
we would just leave from town and try to make it to Ohiopyle, but maybe we
should consider driving out and starting somewhere on the trail rather
than spend 1/4 of our miles getting out of town (and familiar miles, at
that). I'm sure this group would generate some decent recommendations...

Andy: I hope you heal up soon. I've noticed some of your PGH posts in the

stock except the handlebars. I swapped out the Bosco's for Velo Orange
Milan bars. The Bosco bars made the bike feel too small for me (I'm 5'5"
and it's the 45 size), and the Milan bars give me a semi-upright position
that makes it feel just right. This is my "do everything bike". Shopping,
touring, gravel riding, commuting, it's the bike I prefer for most things.
I have covered up the "JR", in "Clem Smith JR" with a Clementine sticker.
This bike is most certainly not a Junior, she is a classy lady!

Early last year, I moved to Colorado. I had no idea what a goat head
was before moving here. Now unfortunately, I am well acquainted. I swapped
out the tires on all my bikes to Schwalbe Marathons to battle the buggers.
I'm still getting some flats though. Is going tubeless worth the mess and
expense? I can't use these Marathons, they are the standard wire bead
version. And has anybody tried using the stock Clem wheels set up
tubelessly? I would already need new tires, and a better pump. So I think
new wheels are out of my budget.

Re: [RBW] Re: Vertical bike storage (again)

2021-04-14 Thread Patrick Moore
For 6 months after my divorce I lived in a 1 bedroom apartment, and used
the dining area to store my bikes. 2X4 bolted to wall, J hooks in 2X4,
hanging bikes alternated up/down. I got 5 along a small wall, it couldn't
have been much more than 6-7 feet, with the 6th, the commuter, propped up
against the adjacent wall. It all worked out very well.

Aside: The kitchen had a large adjacent utility closet, large enough for
full-size washer and dryer. I installed pegboard, work table, and there was
just enough room on one end for a large metal shelf. All hidden neatly away
by folding doors. OTOH, I had to use the living room rug for major repairs.
6 months later, thank God, I bought a house with a 2-car garage for me
alone.

Re: [RBW] Introduction and Tire Question

I figured that any tubeless 26" rim would be for fat tires. 30 mm is way
overkill for 42 mm, let alone 28 mm, which is what I use on my road bikes.
Still, for a Clementine, it's probably the very best choice if you want to
give up tubes.
