Re: [RBW] 8-speed, 12-34 cassette

2021-11-01 Thread Ray Varella
I have a couple of those 12-34 8 speed cassettes in use, one with a Suntour
XC Pro rear mech and one with a first generation Deore XT, both shifted in
friction, they both shift so smooth and quietly I find myself looking down
to see if they changed cogs.
For $20 they are a bargain. If the range works for you, I don’t see how
you can go wrong.

Hey Garth, you can get an Ultegra 13T to replace the 12, I’ve done that
too.
Unfortunately TA discontinued their Podium line of cassettes.

Rivendell is working on a 7 speed unit that looks promising.

Not that I'm opposed to Sunrace. Just curious if there are other

+1, though modern LED blinkies are so bright that even dangling

But yes, they are directional.

Re: [RBW] 8-speed, 12-34 cassette

2021-11-01 Thread Garth
Sunarace is the only mfr. of the 12-34 8-sp using 12/14/16/18/21/24/28/34
cogs. Microshift has a 12-32 but uses a very wonky 12/13/15/18/21/24/28/32.
A 15 to 18 jump is too much for my riding preference with 24/36/44 rings.
It's like a gear and a half jump where you don't want one.

What I like about Sunrace CSM double-digit mtb cassettes is that they're
held together by a removable torx pin, so if need be I can by another
non-exact cassette with the cogs I ride most, the 14/16/18/21/24 and use
the previous 28 and 32, or if it the other had a 34 I'd be okay with that.

This gear calculator is very easy to use and customize even if a specific
cassette isn't listed. Use you mouse and arrange things as you like.

http://www.gear-calculator.com/

Basically though, cog selection in mfr. cassettes sucks ! I have no use for
11, 12 or even 13 for that matter. I currently have a Sunrace 12-36 9-sp
that I don't use either the 12 or 36 cogs, so I basically use it as a
narrow spaced 7-speed. The 36 is my "spoke guard" ! I could just as easily
get by with 15/17/20/24/28/32 cogs if anyone offered it. Six cog SS/trials
cassette hubs are made by Hadley, Hope and Onyx. If I had it my way
everyone would choose their cassette cogs that had a mind to, the weight
weenies need not apply because they'll put up with anything as long as the
digits read like tea leaves.

Re: [RBW] SON Rear Light Brightness?

2021-11-01 Thread Andrew Letton
 Pet peeve rant warning:
Most LED taillights are highly directional, and as such, they need to be
mounted rigidly and aimed correctly "back down the road" to be most
effective.Personally, I think that bag makers should stop putting light loops
on floppy bags, as they give the rider a false sense of security, thinking
their taillight will make them seen from behind, when in fact, their taillight
is usually pointing at a spot on the ground 2m behind the bike or somewhere to
the left of the moon...not at the cars behind them.
Please mount taillights rigidly to your frame, saddle rails, fender, or rack!

Diontte. I've been knocked off my bike three times in Philly, once I started to
ride with a Dinotte, people def. could see me. The SON is cute, and it's nice
to always have something on, but it's easy enough to overlook from a driver's
point of view, and I'm not totally in love with the extra wiring going the rear
of the bike. if I had this system built out again, I'd just go with a high-end
battery-powered light, the Diontte is a game-changer in you have to ride in
heavy traffic day or night.

[RBW] ¡¡Garage Sale!! Frameset, Nitto, Paul, Rene Herse, bags, etc.

2021-11-01 Thread Andrew Turner
Here's the link to all the images. I'll try and stay on top of it and
delete the ones that sell. https://photos.app.goo.gl/dyDZAVfj6t6ppzNa8

*1: FW Evans Frameset: $400 + half shipping *
*This is an English-made frameset made in the late 80s, early 90's with 531
tubing. Great for touring, commuting, randonneuring, even 'cross. The
frameset sports a fresh powdercoat, custom decals and brass head badge
made by yours truly. The frame had some modifications done to it by Amigo
Frameworks here in Nashville, including but not limited to some brazeons
for fenders, a pump peg, extra waterbottle cage brazeon, etc. Small but
helpful stuff. There's been some chipping here and there but nothing too
crazy.*

*F**rame size: (C-C): 63ST, 58TT *
*Steerer has been recently extended for 1" threadless use *

*Color coordinated NOS Cane Creek 1" headset + bike jerks stem cap I'll
include all the 1" headset spacers I have, carbon and silver alloy. *
*Also includes the 1" to 1-1/8" shim for modern stems *
*Max tire size: 35mm slicks. Those bald spots inside the chainstays are due
to the rear QR coming loose and the Bon Jon's rubbing, so it's a very snug
fit. 32-33 is a much much better fit. 38's WILL NOT FIT. *

*2: Tubus Lowrider racks + vintage REI Novara small panniers: $60 + free
shipping**I bought these for the FW Evans but never ended up using them.
Both are clearly worn but I figured if anyone's pannier-curious, these are
a good entry-level option. *

*3: Ruthworks Black Ultralight Brevet Handlebar Bag: $90 + free shipping *
*Very lightly used, there is a subtle stain on the inside pocket but
otherwise pretty darn immaculate. I did remove the stabilizing elastic
chords, but I found they weren't all that necessary. *

*4: Nitto Bar End plugs, Blue: $20 + free shipping *
*Mostly been living their lives in my small parts bin and they deserve
better *

*5: "NOS" Ultegra 1" threaded headset + brass spacer: $70 + free shipping*
*I bought this NOS in the box from Analog a while back, mounted it once but
quickly replaced it...I don't even think it's seen any mileage. some slight
wear marks on the logo from storage but otherwise in great condition. Sorry
for the grease pics, I'll clean it all up before shipping it. I did one
modification, I cut a little notch out of the crown race as it was crazy
hard to install...doesn't affect performance whatsoever, just makes it a
little easier to install. *

*6: Paul Funky Monkey 7/8" Cable Hanger + fancy brass barrel adjuster: $50
+ free shipping *
*Fits around a quill stem, great condition. Mostly lived it's life on a
bike that never got ridden. *

*7: Rene Herse Front Cable Hanger, Grooved + Ferrule: $50 + free shipping
**Brand
new just out of it's packaging, never used. *

*8: Pair of Rene Herse Bon Jon Pass Extralight tan tires: $105 + free
shipping *
*These have less than 300 miles on them, a little dirty but tons and tons
of life left. The gnarliest thing the rear tire faced was 2 pinch flats on
a gravel ride resulting in a humiliating walk back to the car with a flat
tire, so that one got a little worn down on the sidewalls where it meets
the rubber. Doesn't look like any serious damage was done and it still
holds air fine. I don't recommend running these tubeless though. I never
did on these but on a previous pair, they didn't hold air very well and
took a ton of sealant to seal the thin sidewalls. But man are they fast. *

[RBW] Inspiring Clem Smith Jr L builds!!

2021-11-01 Thread Ron Frazelle
Hi all,

I just bought my first Rivendell (Clem Smith Jr. L) and I am beyond stoked
to drive up and pick it up! I was originally looking for an Atlantis frame
and fork...but kept looking at Grant's Clem Smith Jr L (maxed out) in the
*Staff
Bikes* section of the site...it really seemed to be calling to me. And
then, with the Riv site redesign (which I like much better BTW), there is
the picture representing "Trailish" bikes of Grant's Clem battling a pretty
gnarly root section...just muddying up my decision making process...which
isn't hard to do, BTW.

After discussing my "dilemma" over a few wonderfully lengthy, phone calls
with Hugh covering so much bike geekery, I decided to pull the trigger on
buying one of the leftover 59 complete bikes that were left.

Since I was originally looking for a frame and fork, I have a lot of my own
parts (both bought and pulled from the bin o' parts) for this bike and I
will be replacing some of the parts on the complete.

If you guys don't mind playing along...I would love it if you fellow Clem
Smith Jr L owners could send over some pics of your builds.

That would be awesome.

Thanks! :)

Re: [RBW] 8-speed, 12-34 cassette

2021-11-01 Thread Pam Bikes
I've been buying the 11-32 Shimano and SRAM. I think the gearing is
slightly better on the SRAM. I like an 11. 32 seems to be sufficient.
Look at the gearing calculators on Sheldon Brown.com

took a 40 day vacation with bikes. I ride a Gus and my friend, Tim, a
Susie. Check out the video above for a recap of events in sequential
 order.

The original idea was a skate trip by bicycles but with mediocre at
best planning. We would ride from Seattle to Oakland finding as much dirt
 and gravel as possible.
We left Chicago by car on July 3rd with my wife, 2 dogs, 2 bikes and
plenty of camping equipment. We dropped my bike off in Seattle to get the
front hub replaced and drove up to Orcas Island for some camping and
skating. After 10 days of driving my wife dropped Tim & I in Seattle to
begin the biking portion. Yes, my wife dropped us in Seattle and drover
herself and the 2 dogs back to Chicago by herself. She is the best and
 has
already let me know she will not be doing that again anytime soon.
Free Range Cycles in Seattle was the starting point for the biking
portion because that is where my bike was. We had a late start and ended
up skating under the bridge, Marginal Way, until dark with the Grindline
crew. A guy named Isaac gave us a place to crash on the flat bottom of
there indoor vert ramp. He also gave us a great route to hit skateparks
 along the way towards Yakima.

We zigzagged through Washington hitting skateparks along the way. If
you didn't know already the Seattle area has the most skateparks per
capita. The route was not straight forward but the trip was not meant to
be. We rode towards Yakima and hung for a day before making our way
 towards Bingen, WA.
After skating Bingen Park for a full day we hitchhiked across the
Columbia River to get into Hood River, Oregon. From Hood River we rode to
Portland and instead of staying in Portland for 3 days we stayed for 14.
After about 8 days our friend finally asked how long we would be sleeping
on his floor. We originally thought we would ride the Oregon Outback but
due to heavy fires thought best to just stay and skate Burnside everyday
and do some s24o in the Portland area. (We plan on going back and doing
 the
Outback in the early spring time). We both were not interested in biking
the 1 and used a Hertz bailout to rent a van and drive the 1 with our
 bikes
to Oakland. Saving our legs for lots of day rides and skating through the
 Oakland area.
We stayed in Oakland for about 10 days and skated every single day
expect one when we decided to take BART to walnut creek and ride Mt.
Diablo. After sleeping outside on the Mountain we checked out Riv and
 took
BART back to our friends place in Oakland.
After a good time in Oakland we took the Amtrak back to Chicago on
 August 12th.
The big take away... Bring your bike to each town you visit so you can
go where you want when you want. Sometimes, listen to locals. Lastly,
carrying a skateboard while touring adds a lot of extra weight but totally
worth it if you are still a 30+ year old skate rat.

2021-11-01 Thread Matt Beecher
Thanks. I hope to be able to build something up to ride it this weekend.
I might have to substitute the planned triple for a Sugino Mighty double.
I'm guessing that with those smaller wheels, I might not need the granny
gear.
