I had a 51 cm 2016 Appaloosa with both chocomoose and albatross bars. Loved
it with the former, not so much with the later. Love the Albatross on my
54.5 Homer. Never ran a load on the front, though.

[RBW] Re: Best all-around useful saddlebag?

2022-04-16 Thread ascpgh
I have used a Carradace Nelson Longflap I've used for daily commuting and
overnight trips for 20 years now. For medium and higher trail bikes putting
loads on the rear are less detrimental to handling than the front. The
Nelson's lateral shape keeps things as well forward as possible. I got it
for a ridiculously light ride across the country (credit card camping and
eating) on my Rambouillet. Simple, useful and adaptable.

[RBW] WTB: Analog Cycles Fifth Season Squall Sack

2022-04-16 Thread Conway Bennett
It's more like I want to try an Analog Cycles Fifth Season Squall Sack, and
I'm not keen on the color options on their site right now. I just swapped
handlebars from drops to persuaders so I can ride with both my kids, and I
do not think my RRB Jumbo Jammer will work. I like big, unstructured, roll
top bags without a lot of pockets, so the fifth season squall Sack checks a
lot of boxes for me.

Thanks in advance.

I am pretty addicted to the Crank Stamp 1 pedals because they are light,
grippy, come in two sizes and loads of colors too. These bear traps just
kept calling to me because they look so cool so I decided to use them. I

I also went with the huge bottle cage since the new Clems come with 3
bottle cage attachments so it was possible. I then realized that normal
bottles wouldn't fit (silly me) so I bought a large water bottle. Its crazy
how big it is.Hydration in the future will not be a problem.

2022-04-16 Thread Johnny Alien
I went with the 60's because the 65's required a 31.8 stem and 1. The
Faceplatter is very tall and would result in the bars being too high and
more importantly 2. Even if they would work they were out of stock and
there were no other options at the time.

Now they have the new option available at Rivendell but I am happy with the
60 at the moment.

2022-04-16 Thread Johnny Alien
@rmrose58 that is a killer looking Clem. I have a Deore/Cliffhanger
wheelset that I am planning to get set up tubeless. I am going to throw
some Gravel King SK 2.1 tires on it. If I could get the SS that wide I
would have went with that but they don't exist. I am digging the ergon

[RBW] Re: Best all-around useful saddlebag?

2022-04-16 Thread larson....@gmail.com
I have a Carradice Pendleton for everyday use-it is a really nice mid-sized
bag. I also have a Nelson Longflap for times when I need more capacity, and
I really like the longflap feature. I really like the simple, functional
and durable aesthetic of Carradice. That being said, I could see the
advantages of a modern version like Swift or Bags x Bird. Someday I hope to
have a Waxwing custom saddlebag, which might be the best of both worlds.

[RBW] For sale: Hubs, cassettes, bar-cons, Outer Shell stem caddy, etc.

2022-04-16 Thread Eric Marth
Hey everyone -- I had to cancel my ride this morning so I'm home culling
the parts cabinet. Prices below do not include shipping, which will be
calculated based on weight and location. Payment via PayPal Friends &
Family.

Pictures are here.

1. Campagnolo front and rear hubs -- $30
I am having trouble identifying these hubs, no serial or model numbers.
They came off a Ciocc that had a full Campy Athena group. 100mm front and
126mm rear, both are 32-hole. They need to be serviced. No skewers
included.

2. Campagnolo 8 speed cassette and freehub -- $25
Cassette is a 12-21 (12-13-14-15-16-17-19-21). Spacers included. Freehub
needs to be serviced (I don't have a bearing press). Pawls and springs
included but should be replaced.

3. Shimano Deore front hub HB-T610 -- $15
Silver Deore hub, 32-hole. No skewer included. Ridden for a few hundred
miles.

4. Shimano XTR front hub HB-M900 -- $75
Smooth, recently serviced. Skewer included.

5. Shimano Dura Ace bar end shifters SL-BS78 -- $50
2x10 Dura Ace shifters.

6. Suntour Accushift Bar Cons -- $40
Some surface damage, filled in with Sharpie. Otherwise functional. Friction
or index modes, though consensus seems to be these don't index well.

7. Newbaum's cotton bar tape -- $10/two rolls
Burnt orange and eggplant. New and uncut rolls. Let me know the color you
want. I don't want to sell single rolls :)

8. Sugino 52t chainring -- $15/OBO
Made in Japan, came off an XO-1. 110 BCD.

9. SRAM 9 speed cassette -- $15/OBO
This is an 11-32 that could use a cleaning. Fits Shimano freehubs.

10. Shimano BR-AT50 cantilever brakes ā€” $20
Classic 80s Shimano cantis. You might want to replace the pads, they appear
to be original. Came off a 1985 Bridgestone MB-2.

11. German Handlebar mirror -- $20
New, in the box. Purchased from Rivendell.

12. Outer Shell Stem Caddy -- $50
Purchased new from Outer Shell, used for about 6 months. Some surface wear.
One of the lashing straps was trimmed by me. Marigold X-Pac.

13. Kucharik real leather chamois -- $20
Well, Kucharik has closed up shop forever. This is a leather chamois I rode
very little before removing it from my wool shorts.

14. Cat Eye Vectra -- FREE with purchase of something else
This was installed on my Hillborne when I bought it. All bits included. No
battery. As-is, never tried it out.

15. Brass cup washers -- Four for $1
These brass cup washers fit Silver 1 and 2 shifters. I have a box of 100
and will never use them all! Solid brass. Number 12 brass cup washers, also
known as countersunk washers.

[RBW] Re: Best all-around useful saddlebag?

2022-04-16 Thread Eric Marth
Hi Chris ā€“ Welcome!

I've been running a Sackville "Happisack" (I just think of it as the
"medium") for over a year and love it. Great size for me as I do a lot of
grocery trips and it fits a large clamshell of salad or a twelve pack of
seltzer. Also can accommodate my laptop, documents, sweaters, etc. Great
size for me and wouldn't want any bigger or smaller. I run mine supported
by a Nitto R14 rack.

I don't think you could go wrong with either the Bag Boy or Happisack as a
compliment to your basket. Joe's right, too: you won't notice when it's
empty, except as a handsome accessory dangling off the back.

[RBW] Re: Best all-around useful saddlebag?

2022-04-16 Thread George Schick
My favorite was the Carradice Barley "super C" model coupled with the
Carradice Bagman Sport bag support. The Super C Barley was great in that
it had plastic quick-detach strap connectors. Also, it had a slightly
larger capacity than the standard Barley bag. But apparently they only
made the Super C version of that bag for a few years and it's no longer
available. Likewise, the Sport model of the bag support does not appear to
be available any longer, either, other than in a QR version. The standard
size Bagman is too large for the Barley bag.

The Choco Moose have been good to me so far, but I've been riding only
lightly loaded. For the overnight we're doing next month, my load will be
pretty similar to what's in your photo. Front lowrider rack with panniers
+ basket + light load on top of the rear rack. I'll report back with how
it handles.

[RBW] Re: WTB: Riv silver chainring guard?

2022-04-16 Thread Bill Lindsay
It comes in three sizes. Do you care which size it is?

I know I ended up with a steel 38T chainring when setting up my tandem, and
maybe I ended up with the 38T "size" of the guard, but maybe I used it on
another build, or maybe I sold it. I will go look, but if you want
something other than a 38 I won't bother.

[RBW] Re: Best all-around useful saddlebag?

2022-04-16 Thread Matt Beecher
I've got a few Acorn bags. The medium and tall rando bags are the best I
have seen, if you want to consider a front rack bag and are willing to
commit to a decaleur. The saddle bags are good too, but more on par with
competition. The only fault I give Acorn is that they are hard to get,
though it seems this is a small two person side-hustle, so you cannot
really blame them for this.

I have some Sackville bags and they are pretty nice. I have no complaints
here, but the fabric does not seem quite as durable, though I think this
might be an unfair statement. I've never had a Sackville fail on me before
and the quality is good. That said, if I were going to ride across the
country and needed a saddlebag to last those miles, I would probably go
with the Acorn.

I also have two Minnehaha bags. I picked them up about a decade ago for a
very cheap price. I think they were on clearance for about $25. Without a
support, I am not a fan, as they have a tendency to sway due to a lack of
reinforcement. I like them with the bagman support I picked up.

Surprisingly, I don't think I have ever seen a Carradice in person, though
I hear good things about them.

Best regards,
Matt in Oswego

Re: [RBW] Re: Best all-around useful saddlebag?

2022-04-16 Thread Patrick Moore
I've owned 2 medium Saddlesacks and 1 large, 1 of the mediums and the large
older models. Yes, the fabric on the newer medium is not as good as that on
the earlier M and L. Still, I doubt the new and current one will fail in my
lifetime.

I've owned a couple of smaller Acorn bags including 1 Junior/Cadet-sized
saddlebag. They were good, but I didn't think that the fabric was better
than Carradices, at least recent Carradices, not to mention the stalwarts
from 30 years ago; Carradice did go through a a period in the '00s or early
'10s where the material and leather was much poorer.

Does anyone still have one of the Cartwright series? I owned an Adam and a
huge Hoss; nice, but more like Carradices in better quality than like the
Saddlesacks.

The OP included the phrase: " if you could only own one."

LOLOLOLOL!!! Only one! That's hilarious. :)

OK, seriously, I strongly endorse the Swift Zeitgeist as a very very good
first saddlebag. It's great quality, great design, great materials, and
MUSA. It is well-known, so a high resale value is guaranteed no matter how
much you use it. I won't know whether to pity you or admire you if it
turns out to be the only saddlebag you ever own. Buying bags is a noble
pursuit.

[RBW] Re: WTB: Riv silver chainring guard?

2022-04-16 Thread Joe Bernard
In reference to Bill's question, you'll want to match guard size pretty
close to chainring size unless it's a singlespeed or IGH drivetrain. I
discovered the expensive way the Riv guard sits very close to the ring and
the chain will rub it in the small/hardest rear cog on a derailer bike if
the guard is notably bigger than the chainring..say 42t guard/36t ring. So
there's that!

Chris, I dropped a bunch of bags on the "rivendelicious" facebook page very
recently. If you haven't checked that site out, it's where people sell
stuff (in addition to or alternative to here)

IMO go big

Re: [RBW] Re: Riv asks: One bike forever, which one?

2022-04-16 Thread Eric Marth
I noticed this in the Sheldon Brown / Grant Petersen interview Will posted
on the site this week. The interview is undated but it must be from around
1996 because Grant mentions Reader No. 7 and my copy has a postmark date of
May 1996. I'd wager Grant's answer in 2022 would be much different!

*bikesite:* If you could have any - but only one - bike to ride for the
rest of your life, which would it be?

*Grant Petersen:* "One bike" wouldn't be a hardship, and the answer comes
easy. It would be a Rivendell All-Rounder, with a Brooks B.17 saddle,
Ritchey Crossbite 1.1 tires, a Ritchey double with 48 x36 rings and a 13 x
28 6-speed cluster, SunTour bar end shifters, any derailleurs (I don't
care), a Phil bb---it's pretty much a bike we sell, and that's why we sell
it.

[RBW] Who's pre-ordering an Atlantis next week?

2022-04-16 Thread CJ
I have to admit that for the last decade or so, I haven't been too
interested in Rivendell's off-the-peg frame offerings. I have a Rambouillet
and a Heron, and briefly owned a 26" wheeled Toyo Atlantis (that had been a
wish-list bike for a long time) that I just didn't gel with. I've looked at
Riv's current offerings, and the only one in recent years that peaked my
interest was the Clem H. After reading the most recent Riv newsletter and
seeing the Atlantis pre-order, I took a look, and realized that the 53cm
Atlantis is very close in fit and function to the 52cm Clem H. It's kind of
got me interested. If I were to buy one, I would have to build a set of
wheels, as I don't have any 584 wheelsets. I'd probably rob the rest of the
parts to build it off some other bikes, and think about thinning the herd a
bit. I've built quite a fleet of 90s MTB beaters, and they are currently
enjoying a bit of a moment of popularity, so maybe it's time to release
some of them into the wild.

Anyway, that's my story. Is anyone else planning on trying to get an
Atlantis? Why? What are your plans for it?

Any recommendations for 584 rims? I think the Velocity Cliffhanger is the
only wide, rim brake rim available in that size. Any others that I've
missed. I'd be using 2.2-2.4" tires, so narrow rims need not apply.

Chris

Interesting thought regarding choosing Gus. I was thinking along those same

Beautiful photos once again, Takashi! How fortunate you are to ramble
around those beautiful hills on your lovely bicycle. One of these days I'll
have to make a trip out your way and pedal those roads. Our blossoms in
Yokohama are all but gone with the exception of the yaezakura cherries.
Enjoy the Spring!

[RBW] Crust Clydesdale Forks and Rivs

2022-04-16 Thread maxcr
Hi Bunch,

I'm having some crazy thoughts ... thinking of outfitting my Sam or my
Atlantis with a Clydesale Fork to carry my 45 pound dog.

Two question to the group: 1) Will the Clydesdale fork work with either the
Sam or the Atlantis? 2) Am I crazy to try to carry a 45 pound dog on a bike?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Max

[RBW] Re: Crust Clydesdale Forks and Rivs

2022-04-16 Thread Jason Fuller
I've always thought the Clydesdale fork would be awesome on a Clem L
actually. The 1" version is still threadless but it comes with a headset
iirc so you'd just need a new stem, and it'll work on either for sure -
it's a heavy tank of a fork, so I would suggest between the two it goes on
the Atlantis. I had one for a few months, I carried 45 lbs in it and the
steering was very heavy but it's certainly doable. A trailer would
probably be the more typical option for a dog that size, but then again, I
find trailers tend to feel harder to pedal pound-for-pound, I think because
of the small accelerations with each pedal stroke being actively pulled
against by the trailer's independent inertia.

So all that said, I'd say go for it! A big rubbermaid type bin would
probably be great, or heck, even going with a literal dog crate. If it
doesn't work out you can easily recoup your cost on the fork because it'll
sell in a heartbeat.

[RBW] FS: Schmidt Edelux, B&M Rear Light & E-Werk, Revelate, Velogical Dynamo + more

2022-04-16 Thread Mike in WA
Hi all,

Used to be a long(ish)-time community member, but sold my two Rivs (to
someone on the list), bought a Jones Plus, and have been doing a different
type of riding ever since. I have some lightly-to hardly- to never-used
goodies for sale here. See the Imgur page for
pictures.

   1. Schmidt "Edelux II" headlight with headlight and taillight wires
attached, circa 2014. This was mounted for about 6 months on my old
Hillborne before I sold it, then kept in storage. Works perfectly and just
needs a little simichrome to look good as new. Asking $110 shipped.
   2. Busch & Muller Toplight Line "Brake Plus" taillight, circa 2014. The
fancy kind that pulses or something when you slow down. Never used or even
   mounted. Asking $45 shipped.
   3. Velogical Rim Dynamo System, circa 2014. Never used or installed, as
I was not motivated or savvy enough to install a non-hub dynamo system. In
perfect working order as far as I know, includes the thermistor, mounting
hardware, and extra o-ring. Asking $80 shipped.
   4. B&M "E-Werk" charging kit, circa 2014. Older model that was never
used or installed, should still work perfectly and charge all of your
   devices. Here's Peter White's page
    if you'd like more
information on it. Asking $100 shipped.
   5. Revelate "Sweet Roll", size small, circa 2014. Another never mounted
or used item in perfect conditon, with included handlebar installation
pads. This is the 11 liter version, I believe. Asking $65 shipped.
   6. Schwalbe Ice Spiker Pro tires, 29" X 2.25", circa 2014. I used these
for less than 500 miles of snow commuting in grad school in 2013-14, then
put them away in storage. Missing a stud here and there but still have
plenty of life in them. Irremovable orange seal on inside is a sign of
   beausage. Asking $65 shipped.
   7. Shimano XT front derailleur, circa 2014. Used this for a short time (
   >300 miles or so) on my Jones, then switched to a 1X10 setup. Still works
   perfectly. Asking $25 shipped.

If you would like to buy multiple items we can work out some kind of deal
with the shipping and so forth. Happy to do payment by Venmo or PayPal.
Thanks in advance for looking!

[RBW] Re: Crust Clydesdale Forks and Rivs

2022-04-16 Thread J Imler
Hi Max, I have a Clydesdale fork and a 10lb dog. It's perfect. 45lbs would
necessitate an electric assist in my opinion if you want to go for
distance. Otherwise, around the block a couple of times is likely.
