Re: [RBW] Re: Adding photos to Post

2022-05-08 Thread Richard Borneman
I used the paper clip, reduced the photo to smallest size. Even tried
attaching a link to photo. No go.

logging in to Google Groups with a browser allowed me to include photos,

There are three dots at the bottom of both your second post and Garth’s
 post in this thread.
When you click on that, it expands and shows the post that you are
“replying” to, even if you clicked “Reply all”.
All that is also included in your post.

So maybe you are “replying” to a post that is replying to a post…that
each already have photos attached…and so, your message is too long even if
it is only a couple of words. All that other stuff goes along, and gets
 credited to your post.

Easiest way out of that is to put a couple of words or a sentence in
your post window, and check for the three dots in your post window, and
click them to expand, and then delete everything below your couple of
words. That should give you a clean post to work with.

Another thing I’ve found is that you can attach photos with the
paperclip, and that seems to sometimes work better for me on larger photos
 than the in-line insertions.

[RBW] Re: Jim 7 speed cassette on a triple

2022-05-08 Thread Garth
I suppose the "guess" comes from experience in doing such gearing with a
13-15-17-20-24-28-32 freewheel and 26/44/48 rings. What usually doesn't
get expressed about half stepping is that you simply don't have to half
step, or certainly not all the time ! What I'd do is simply treat it like
any other triple with typical spreads(like 36/48 rings for example), and
only use the half steps as a fine tuning when necessary. the efficacy of
all this really comes down to knowing what gear ranges you typically ride
for your local terrain. Hence, no cookie cutter formulas ! This is what I
love about multiple rings and cogs, there's endless ways to configure and
shift it all.

Re: [RBW] Re: Jim 7 speed cassette on a triple

2022-05-08 Thread Patrick Moore
Half-stepping actually makes sense for rolling terrain where you shift at
least a couple of rear cogs at a time -- terrain with sharp elevation
changes, and use the chainrings to fine tune on flatter portions. But it
made more sense with few rear cogs; I worked it out once long ago and it
works well with up to 5 or 6 cogs; beyond that number and you end up with
too many high gears or too-small gaps at the low end. But I did "pseudo
half step" a 7 speed cassette, half-stepping the middle 5 and using the big
(IIRC, 4 t jump) as a bailout with inner ring only, and the small as a
downhill gear with the big ring only; with 48/45 or 47/44 rings, this gave
a very useful commuting setup, with the 2 most-used cruising gears in the
middle 17 t cog, and "indexed" shifting between the 2 rings (IIRC, the
cruising gears were roughly 70" and 65"). Front shifts are very fast and
precise: just slam the lever back and forth against the stops, at least, if
you don't have a granny ring (my granny was the 32 t big #7 cog).

Of course, 9+ speeds make all of this more or less academic.

[RBW] Help finding 26.0 Nitto Handlebar like their 25.4 b812...

2022-05-08 Thread Hunter Harr
Hey, any help would be great.

Looking to switch from Noodles on my Appaloosa to upright and had some
Civia Aldrich bars back on a Hillborne a few years ago. The B812s look like
the ticket, but would like to keep the 26.0 DirtDrop stem

Know I could use a shim, would rather not if I can find these bars. Which I
know I saw, but can not find anymore.

Checked the usual suspects... Blue Lug, SimWorks, Alex's Cycles, jitensha,
Retrogression...

Who did I miss that may have it?

"A half step triple would work, like a 44/40/28 for example. The numbers

help split some of the large jumps in the cassette."

You guessed pretty well. The jumps in the 13-42 average about 18%, and a
44-40 is about a 9% change, so that's a near perfect half step. A 28-42 is
a pretty low gear, so if anyone really wanted to live through the glory
years of half-step gearing again, the 13-42 would work. I don't know why
anyone would want to shift so much if they didn't have to, but you could.

[RBW] Re: FS: Parts

2022-05-08 Thread J S
Updated….
Sold, Nitto rack, 1 pair Diacompe brake levers, 7cm nitto technomic.

All prices exclude shipping. That can be figured later

Nitto Campee rear rack, had on bike for a bit years ago, never really used
other than to hold a jacket. My concern is shipping cost. $100 plus
shipping. SOLD

Nitto Albatross CroMo for local pickup in western MA unless you buy it with
the rack as both will fit the box I have, $50. No picture. I can send one
if interested.

2 nitto technomic stems, I believe the same as Tallux. 7 cm, has signs of
use, 9cm, minimal signs of use, 26.0, 225mm. $35 fot the 7cm, 40 fot the
9cm plus shipping. 7cm SOLD

MKS touring pedals (the real ones). So many shops sell MKS touring and they
are all different. These have a nice sized platform. I lightly used, $40,
1 new in package, $50, plus shipping.

2 Suntour XCD 4050 triple front derailleurs, NIB, $45 plus shipping each.

2 sets Diacompe brake levers (the ones Riv sold) used, $25 plus shipping
per set. 1 set of Diacompe levers sold, 1 set left.

Suntour NOS XC Pro 32 hole rear hub, 130mm spacing for freewheel. $75 plus
shipping.

2 Suntour X-1 fron derailleurs, NOS, some shop wear. $25 plus shipping.

If prices seem high please contact me off list.

Thanks,

Joel

[RBW] Re: Adding photos to Post

2022-05-08 Thread Richard Borneman
Tried to attach photo to a new post. Just title, two words and the photo.
No luck. Message too long.
Same result with the Dell desktop or the Macbook Pro.
I have looked at all my Google Group settings. Can't find anything amiss.
What am I missing?

Re: [RBW] Wonderful Japanese Bike Storage

2022-05-08 Thread John Rinker
Hey Steven,

Hmmm. Shorts and sandals from Late March/April to Mid-November here in
Yokohama. Super hot during August and September. The best months are
October and May, for sure.

Cheers,
John
