I have a question about that this that's probably obvious to you God's
Country folk, but I'm just a common city boy and can't picture how it
works: Do you pay a fee to go in and pick away, or do they charge by the
bag on the way out?

Michigan, and my green and gold Platypus is being readied to do its good
work. There is a nearby farm that I can ride to, and they have announced
the opening of Honeycrisp apple picking season this very morning.

My favorite apples in all the world are Honeycrisp apples. This variety
was created in Minnesota (a state near and dear to my heart) and I’ve
 never
tasted a better apple. The Honeycrisp was bred for taste - a sweet and
 tart
combination that is perfectly balanced. I’ve only had them from the
 grocery
store, but picking them fresh from the orchard should yield an out-of-body
 experience, I figured.

I rode my Overkill Shopping Platypus to the farm. They let me park
right by the entrance to the orchard and kept an eye on the bike while I
wandered through the apple orchard, filling my paper bag with a half
 bushel
of fragrant, red Honeycrisp apples. I returned to my Platypus and began
loading up my Backabike bags. The scene was idyllic with the sunflowers in
the backdrop and my bags full of red apples in the foreground. A man
stopped to admire my bike. The more he looked, the more he liked. In 3
minutes’ worth of questions, he came to the conclusion that he needs this
exact bike. I told him there’s a shipment soon coming to Rivendell. I hope
hope HOPE one day to run into another Shopping Platypus at the orchard.

I have fruit-shopped by Platypus with varying success in the past. I
put fresh strawberries from the farmer’s market in my front basket and
 came
home with strawberry jam instead. I got a watermelon wedged in the bag and
struggled to free it when I got home. I was not anxious to arrive with
bruised apples, or worse, applesauce. But this is where Backabike bags
shine - not one apple was damaged in transit.

Attached in the next post is a video I made of the experience. Which
may or may not work. Instagram will have it, though!

[RBW] Re: Randonneuring Bike

2022-08-20 Thread nlerner
In past years before I sold it off, my brevet bike was a Romulus. It saw
many centuries, a few 200k rides, a 300k ride, and a couple of 24-hour 320k
flèche team rides. I ran it with 32mm tires and fenders. As others have
said, comfort at the contact points is key: feet, butt, and hands.

[RBW] Re: Clemuno Jr

2022-08-20 Thread Ryan
Maybe I should consider that...I have a 93 X0-1 38. 38 X 52
chainrings...just need the DOS freewheel...I'm quite familiar with WI
freewheels. I have a single 20(I think) on my Peugeot...other thing on the
X0-1 right now that I DON'T love are the 26 X 1.5 Compass-branded McClure
Pass tires which attract glass, small stones, etc. like a magnet. I've
never had worse luck with tires

BTW...I live in Winnipeg which is flat (but is windy)

Re: [RBW] Re: Clemuno Jr

2022-08-20 Thread Eric Daume
Or for a 26" single speeder, the new Handsome XOXO has forward facing
horizontal dropouts, like the Surly Cross Check or BMC Monstercross.

Speaking of, IME this type of dropouts lets the rim track the brake pad as
well as the QB's angled rear track ends, AND make wheel removal with
fenders significantly easier. The only reason not to use these is if you
want really short chainstays... not an issue on the RoadUno. I can't really
see any reason to use the QB style dropouts here.

[RBW] Hands on Wheels T-shirts and RandiJo Caps

2022-08-20 Thread Rich Lesnik
I have Hands on Wheels T-shirts and RandiJo Caps with the Hands on Wheels
logo embroidered in front, for sale. The T-shirts are $25, the caps are $35
(linen) and $45 (summer wool). You can see a picture of the T-shirt (in
yellow with blue print) on my website. I also have shirts in light-blue
with gold lettering. The caps are blue-gray with gold embroidering. If
you're interested, send me an email (contact info is on the Hands on Wheels
website).

Meh, don't beat yourself up. It's neat from a historical standpoint but,
without the correct fork, that value is sorta lost. A Quickbeam,
SimpleOne, Frank Jones or this new one all seem nicer. As do some from
Crust, Surly and others.

FYI, if someone really likes the idea of a singlespeed, 26"-wheeled XO-1,
the magic two-speed gear ratio (for not needing is a tensioner) is 38&35T
chainrings with a 19&16T dos uno freewheel. I had my daughter's set up
that way for a while.

Yeah I messed up selling that one. I live in some hills now but at that
time I was at the top of a VERY steep one, the bike was literally
unrideable for me. Live and learn!

[RBW] Re: Apple Picking By Platypus

2022-08-20 Thread George Schick
Thanks for posting this report about apple picking and the attached
photos. They bring back many, many memories of traveling over to the
orchards in SW Michigan to pick apples - especially those honey crisps.
Even better having it transported them via a good long wheel base bike
equipped with pannier bags. Thanks again for showing.

I've done 200-600km brevets on various bikes, Rivendell and others. My
first 200km was on a Heron road bike, and I just last week set my personal
best time for 200km on that same bike. On the first one I had a saddle bag,
and that was the last time I did a brevet without a handlebar bag! The most
similar Riv models to the Heron road would be Roadeo, Rambouillet, or
Roadini. I have done a large amount of brevet riding on a Bleriot, and the
"country bike" line descended from that (A Homer Hilsen, Sam Hillborne)
would be similar.

As others have said, comfort is the priority, but I would be more specific
and say that comfort _over many hours_ is the priority. A lot of things,
like cushy saddles and cushy shoe soles, are comfortable feeling at the
start, but after 8 hours of riding can be the source of much agony. I would
put your riding position at the top of the list, and everyone is different
in that regard. I am light and flexible and the most comfortable position
for me for very long rides is the classic road bike position, back at about
45 degrees, drop bars with the tops almost even with the saddle and a
pretty deep drop so my position changes a fair amount as I move around on
the bars. One of the important lessons I have learned is that riding too
slowly can be a problem, just as trying to ride too fast can be a problem.
They are different kinds of problems, to be sure. For me, riding too slowly
means 1) I'm in the saddle longer (duh!), and 2) I'm putting more weight on
my butt and less on my legs. I have many times been struggling in the last
half of a brevet and found that spending some time riding a bit faster has
helped me to feel better. Having the ability to change between a broad
range of positions is important for me, and all my bikes, despite their
differences in tubing and geometry, wind up with very similar rider
positioning.

Back to the handlebar bag ... for me that is a very important part of the
setup. While I love the way Grant's designs ride and handle, they tend to
have fairly high steering flop that is amplified by the weight of a
handlebar bag. I don't usually carry a lot of weight there, and I mostly
ride relatively gentle hills,so it's not a deal-breaker. If I was doing a
lot of curvy mountain descents, I wouldn't choose a Rivendell with a
handlebar bag that had much weight in it. That's one of the reasons I ended
up replacing the Bleriot with a bike with less trail. I took the Bleriot
(which was my travel bike) down some descents that would have been more fun
with more linear steering response. Also, I had my Heron fork pulled for
more rake, less trail/flop.

Lastly - tire sizes (carrying over from another recent thread!) - with the
wide availability of truly excellent tires in 622 and 584 diameters and a
wide range of sizes, it's almost irrelevant what size wheels the bike uses.
If your brevets involve rough roads/gravel/dirt, of course you will want
pretty wide tires. You probably want decent fenders, too, if there's any
chance of it raining. I've done brevets on tires ranging from 26mm to 54mm
wide. Wider is generally better, but I've had good and bad rides on all of
them. All Rivendells tend to have more tire and fender room than other
bikes designed for similar purposes.

[RBW] Apple Picking By Platypus

2022-08-20 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
I just did the most Rivendellian thing ever. I’m certain that when the
elves of Rivendell were drawing up their Platypus Plans they were picturing
this: picking fresh fruit by bike. It is a cool, sun dappled morning in
Michigan, and my green and gold Platypus is being readied to do its good
work. There is a nearby farm that I can ride to, and they have announced
the opening of Honeycrisp apple picking season this very morning.

My favorite apples in all the world are Honeycrisp apples. This variety was
created in Minnesota (a state near and dear to my heart) and I’ve never
tasted a better apple. The Honeycrisp was bred for taste - a sweet and tart
combination that is perfectly balanced. I’ve only had them from the grocery
store, but picking them fresh from the orchard should yield an out-of-body
experience, I figured.

I rode my Overkill Shopping Platypus to the farm. They let me park right by
the entrance to the orchard and kept an eye on the bike while I wandered
through the apple orchard, filling my paper bag with a half bushel of
fragrant, red Honeycrisp apples.

I put
fresh strawberries from the farmer’s market in my front basket and came
home with strawberry jam instead. I got a watermelon wedged in the bag and
struggled to free it when I got home. I was not anxious to arrive with
bruised apples, or worse, applesauce. But this is where Backabike bags
shine - not one apple was damaged in transit.

Attached in the next post is a video I made of the experience. Which may or
may not work. Instagram will have it, though!

I like the ride of my PX-10 so much , my dream SS would have Roadeo geo and
tubing and built by Mark Nobilette, maybe in that spiffy black and cream
also pictured in the latest email. Just sayin...

I do want to see the final version of the Roaduno , though. I am curious.

2022-08-20 Thread Alexander Chalmers
I was pleasantly surprised that the final will be fully lugged. I like the
sound of the cream headtube as well, and a singlespeed that can run 55mm
tires sounds awesome.

That said, I find myself getting hung up on the name/decals. I just think
Roaduno sounds a little silly and the headbadge doesn't do anything for me.
Pretty bad reasons to not get one, but might be enough for me in this case.
Anyone else in the same boat? In my own defense, I am hoping to get a
Quickbeam soon and I think I will prefer the shorter wheelbase on that for
the riding I do

I would say a Homer, to give a direct answer. As the others pointed out,
almost any bike would work.

A fellow in NJ Randonnuers has been using a AHH-MUSA for over 10 years
(56cm I think).

The one AHH-MIT I rode felt very light, lighter than I thought it would.
 I was surprised.

You can fit wider tires and fenders compared to Riv models earlier then the
AHH.

>From everything that's been written on the AHH, it appears to have the
lightest tubeset of any Riv model. Just watch how much weight you carry
in the front since the wheel flop is high (true for any RBW model).

This is turning out better than I'd hoped. Seeing as how I regret getting

left from my Quickbeam, I don’t think there's a scenario where I don't at
least try to get one of these. Starting to save pennies now.

Some nerd observations and questions. (Hopefully some of you locals can
check these out in person, and get some detail):

- Do we know if these will be 120 OLN rear spacing?

- Why in the world would they not just use the Frank Jones Sr. track ends?
Wonder what "found' [an existing product] means. Has anybody else ever
done the sloped dropout thing that allows the brakes to work regardless of
wheel position, the way Riv does?)

- Which fork crown do they usually use when there's a target of 55mm
tires? I'm guessing it will not be the Hunqapillar / Clem crown, but that
would be great. Maybe it'll actually be the Appaloosa fork. (I only
wonder because I'm a detail dork and because my favorite-ever tire - the
super moto - is a little bigger than 55mm.) Still, if limited to 55, I'm
sure there'll be good options)

- if this one is a 54, and Will says there's a 61 too, then it sounds like
they ARE in fact the same size increments as the Roadini, which means
there's a 57 too. That's the best news of all, for me! The reason I got

[RBW] Re: Clemuno Jr

2022-08-20 Thread Bones
I always thought a Homer-ish bike with big fat tires would be awesome. It
sounds like that’s what this is. And it’s a single speed too, which is
exactly what I would want! In fact I even was considering a custom at some
point, and it looked a lot like this in my head. I picture it with some
quills/antelopes and Ron’s ortho bars. Cant wait.

I hear you Joe! I love the simplicity and silence of single-speeds too. I
confess that my old SS PX-10 has been seeing the most riding the last few
years. Maybe it's my silent resistance to the proliferation of e-bikes I've
been seeing given the ruinous gas prices...which, don't get me wrong, are a
good idea if they take some cars off the road! even though aesthetically
they do nothing for me.

But the final version of the Roaduno could tick some boxes...

[RBW] Re: Randonneuring Bike

2022-08-20 Thread ascpgh
+1 on responses prioritizing comfort.

I haven't done any official randonneuring but I have ridden across the
country with a small group on a light credit card touring ride and every
summer I try to ride some self-inflicted centuries.

When I was first approached about the cross country ride I realistically
assessed my RB-1 as not up to it. I was sore, stiff and not very functional
after anything more than four hours of riding it. I spoke to Grant about
possibly a Riv custom and he told me about the upcoming Rambouillet and I
bought one. Predictable handling, responsive to inputs and comfortable for
long (8-12 hours) days of riding. Really great.

My only addition is to consider what your load situation would be. I found
that as I took on a bit more gear and anticipated more unpaved than I did
for the mostly state road trek coast to coast the envelope of any bike can
be reached. My Ram with fenders maxes out with 32mm tires and being
moderate to high trail it doesn't tolerate loading in the front well and
doesn't have braze ons to encourage such. This means if I head out for a
few days my load in my Carradice Nelson Longflap saddlebag with a Bagman
support adds to the already rear heavy distribution of just me on the bike
and requires keeping the inflation of the rear tire to be higher, limiting
the comfort of the 32s over time. A model with clearance for more tire
width would be the next consideration

I agree. However neither the Roadini nor the Charlie Gallop can fit 55mm
tyres. So I'll take the weight penalty and get almost the perfect road
bike! Maybe?
These are probably at least 2 years away and I might be broke or dead by
then. :P

Yes but they're heavy which is how you get to Grant/Riv's position, "Why
not just ride a derailer bike if you need gears?" At which point I look at
the light derailer Riv I have now and say, "Good point Grant/Riv!"

An internal geared hub would give you the slick aesthetic of that single
speed without all the walking and expensive knee replacements.
That is what I am thinking I'd do with this frame.
