[RBW] Wrap Up: My first riding season in Michigan

2022-11-11 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
As you have likely heard, (because I have been blathering on about it for
months) my family moved to Michigan in January 2022. I unpacked and then
looked around, noting that I had *zero* friends. By this time I had been
riding my Rivendell alone for 10 years and I was sick of it. I wanted
friends - *bike friends- *so I went looking for them at the local bike
club. I showed up with:
Group ride experience: zero.
Club ride experience: zero.
Knowledge of my ability: close to zero.

But I did know this: I’d probably be the only one riding an upright, steel
mixte. The club was founded by racers 50 years ago, yikes. But they were
remarkably welcoming, and the kind people from this List sent me Marc
Irwin’s email. Turns out, there is one other Rivendell in my local club
rides - Marc’s!

Marc is a Lone Wolf who put aside his solitary tendencies after hearing I
had taken a treacherous route into downtown. He decided since it was a
matter of life and death he ought to get involved. He offered to meet me
and show me safer ways to navigate our city. My desire to have a bike
friend was greater than my fear that Marc might be a serial killer, so I
agreed. It was such a delight to ride Rivendells together. Prior to this
I’d rarely even seen another Rivendell in the wild. If The Lone Wolf felt
the same, there was no indication. That is not his way. But, he agreed to
the next ride. And the next. We wondered if there were other Rivendell
owners who would love the camaraderie we had found. Pretty soon we were
planning big rides in SW Michigan for people to join us for trail rides on
Rivendell bikes. We hosted two, and there is demand for more of them in
Michigan in 2023.

Our personal Riv Rides take us through Kalamazoo and surrounding areas. We
always stop for refreshments - coffee, ice cream, lunch. My role is to call
out and remark upon all of the wonderful things I was deprived of during my
desert living - trees, flowers, bodies of water, and roadkill. The Lone
Wolf is in charge of planning the routes and rolling his eyes heavenward
while suffering The Platypus RIder’s effusiveness. It is my job to take all
the photos and The Lone Wolf’s job to protest the photos. It is also The
Lone Wolf’s job to fix all the stuff that breaks, which has only been his.
It is my job remain eternally lost but sublimely happy.

I have had a lovely time this year; The Lone Wolf has maintained his
aloofness. I once joked that he might not have as much fun as I do, and he
said, “Well, I haven’t left you out here yet,” so he is clearly
delighted. To date, this is the warmest thing he has ever said to me, and it
is all the encouragement I need to suggest the next ride, and the next.

I had a great club riding season, and rode with 3 different groups every
week in the 16 mph group. Our Friday group went faster though, maybe 17. I
met a lot of nice people and gained lots of confidence with road riding.
All the metrics I have to measure my fitness are the best they’ve ever
been. Ripping around on your bike is fun, but it’s not the best riding I
do. The best rides I do are Riv Rides; where I’m free to explore and take
the trails and talk without gasping for breath. I’m so excited to continue
them in the spring, and maybe for a few stolen warm days over the winter.

I owe a lot of gratitude to the good people of Michigan for making this
desert-dweller feel welcome in the Great Lakes Region. Enclosed is my recap
of the Riv Rides we did this year. It’s a link to FB because the video is
too large to share here. If the link doesn’t work, let me know because the
video can be emailed if you want it.

Thanks Rich, I love all these bikes. Just did a lovely ride on the Sonoma
Coast today, Monte Rio to Cazadero, over Ft Ross Road and down Meyer’s
Grade to Highway 1. Awesome weather!

I meant to mention, I had a Quickbeam but gave it to Crazy Bradford down in
Petaluma, who loves it. My knees are no longer suitable for fixed gear or
single speed.

For what it's worth, my wife's Platypus build is complete. Interestingly,
in the time this build was in the stand, my wife elected to come out of

2022-11-11 Thread R Shannon
Very inspiring to see the variety of Rivs those of you currently
own or have owned. Max, you have a stellar collection of bikes!

I'm a Golden Ager in terms of longevity but less so with Rivendell; since
2011 if I recall. Wish it had been sooner. I wouldn't have bought lesser
bikes. All part of the learning curve I guess. Cyclofiend, Ecolvelo and
Lovely Bicycle brought me into the Riv loop with reviews of the Sam
Hillborne. The Sam wasn't my first Riv - that was an Atlantis - but it
quickly led to a Sage Green Sam. The expression "you can't have one
Rivendell" certainly proved true. Some others followed: Clem H, Roadeo and
a Taiwan built Homer.

The Sam has been a keeper though with no plans to leave the stable!

Best,
Rich in ATL

Re: [RBW] Re: What epoch of Rivster are you?

2022-11-11 Thread John Dewey
My journey along this path began in 1997, with a Litespeed—full Record
group, 23mm tires that barely fit, carbon fork...light and fast. Lots of
fun to ride. The very next year, as I recall, the newer Record group
included those great Ergo levers that many of us still ride now—with the
guts removed or in the guise of Cane Creek SCR-5 and the similar IRD
Drilliums. I really NEEDED a set of those new Ergo levers, but they were
*so* *expensive*, yikes.

At that point, as I pondered replacing the pointy levers, I had an
epiphany: this is how it will shake out if I continue to chase the
technology...there's no end to it. And I will never catch it. The levers on
my Litesepeed were fine, I just wanted the new ones. I had no need, just a
lot of *want*. BTW, about this same time, I began reading Grant's writing
via his old newsletters and I realized this was the philosophy I adhered
to.

Shortly thereafter, I decided, enough—sold the Litespeed in '99 and had
Richard Schwinn build me a Waterford touring frame, the AC1900. It's still
in my 'rotation' and I'm as fond of it now as I was when it arrived 23
years ago.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/146626768@N06/50492813172/in/album-72157704160992724/

Until then, I didn't realize I needed more than one bicycle—afterall, you
can only ride one at a time. So in autumn 2004, I walked into the great
Williamson Bike Works (RIP) in Madison WI, and saw this gorgeous deep blue
Rambouillet hanging from a hook on the ceiling with a bunch of other
frames. (Remember those days, when you could just walk into a shop and grab
one from the rafters. Don't we miss that?) I bought it on the spot and the
journey began in earnest.

The blue RAM is my only Rivendell but, of course, Richard builds frames for
Grant. And I have two EBISU built by Hiroshi Imura...so all in the same
family. I have no more bicycle-envy left in me, so my hoarding impulses
now to turn to late '90s components to keep things running at the 9-speed
level. I find it manageable and entertaining, so I'm all good.

Definitely a Golden Ager. Late 90’s, I discovered Rivendell, spent some
time with Grant, and picked up a Heron; got back into riding after a ten or
fifteen year hiatus. I’ve continue to ride each of my Rivendells - Custom,
Legolas, Rambouillet, Roadeo, Atlantis, Heron (now a 650), maybe a few
others.

Good thread. I'm a 2TTer. I learned about Riv ~2010 through ecovelo which
has a presence again on Instagram and cyclofiend. My first Rivendell I
bought was a 2TT Sam I got new for sub $1000, but I lusted after a
Hunqapillar first because of the grey bean paint but especially after
riding one at HQ--back then Hunqs were only $1850. I currently have a
Hunqapillar and my wife has a Rosco Bubbaloosa. I was drinking Riv Kool
aid for a bit, but now I have a crust canti lightning bolt and a BMC
Monstercross on deck. The Appaloosa was the last Riv I really liked, but I
like 650b and the option of drop bars.

I remember a FS for a Riv Mountain, $500 for the frameset, it was a large
and the ad cautioned how large a pbh you needed to ride it. I had just
bought something else and didn’t pursue it past one exchange of emails.
Never saw mention of it being sold, the seller did say it needed a comlete
 repaint. Steve

Re: [RBW] Using Your Rivendell Vs. Being Precious: A Spectrum

2022-11-11 Thread ascpgh
My Rambouillet has been up and down the GAP/C&O in parts and its entirety
numerous times and in all sorts of conditions. If you zoom in on its
picture on my post you'll see the scarfing on the right seat stay that came
from a person knocking it from a stable pedal prop along a brick planter
then trying to stop the fall grabbing one end of the handlebar, guiding the
tube on a slow, weighted downward drag along the top edge of the brick.
Just paint, no metal damaged. Very unlikely to cosmetically repair without
a major repaint, I rattle can clear coated the bare metal and keep an eye
on it. Riding leaves marks and I do ride it.

The non stock ivory blocking on the rear end of my Rambouillet is how I
recovered from the baring of metal to re-braze the brake bridge when it
broke loose a couple years back. A local builder put me back together but
the stark area and margins to cover called for more than the previous plan
used on the irregular scratches. I found a rattle can match for the ivory
color, primed, painted and clear coated the area after a good surface prep.
Black Sharpie to border the amrgin of the Ivory and Creamsicle.

Each violation of the paint finish triggered a "repaint!" reflex in my
mind, built over the time spent searching for receiving, riding,
appreciating and ultimately valuing my ownership of a retired model. The
other side of my brain adds these things up and said to me that after a
driveside rear dropout replacement and prepaint, the events that have
elicited that return to stock condition response would add up to a very
nice custom frame and fork, which it did, by not executing on impulse.

My Ram's still a head turner and not compromised from its original form
other than how it's looking these days, which is care for and ridden. A lot.
