[RBW] Re: Sam Build - Wish Me Luck!

2023-01-16 Thread Bill Fulford
Good luck with your build. I’m in a similar situation, but mine is a
rebuild of a 15 year old Atlantis. I already have replaced the wheels with
Atlas rims and am on my second silver crank so I’m not going new on those.
New Paul brake levers and Canti brakes have arrived along with ergon
handlebar grips. New monarch pedals, nitto stem, Rivendell shifters, and
sim works super yummy tires have been collected. Im leaning toward the
Nitto bull bar as my reinvented Atlantis is going to be an all rounder. The
final cabling and adjustment will probably be done by my lbs as I like a
well tuned bike and I don’t have enough confidence in my mechanics.
It’s been fun researching and making decisions. ~Bill

I'm building an Atlantis, too. And I'm strongly considering a bull bar and

Hey Scott. I went with the Nitto face plater 135 mm for the stem. The bull
bar is 70 cm wide and it’s a 31.8 diameter. It’s the one that Rivendell
sells. I’m hoping that it’s a great fit. ~Bill

Re: [RBW] bottom bracket toubleshooting trivia

2023-01-16 Thread Nick Payne
I always chase and face BB shell threads before installing a bottom
bracket. Almost universally I find there is some misalignment and/or
distortion that the taps and facing cutters correct. Even custom frames
from well-known builders benefit from having this done.

Ditto for the reaming of the head tube and fork crown.

[RBW] Lightweight wheels question: J bend vs straight pull (Ritchey vs Hunt)

2023-01-16 Thread Andrew Turner
Hey there group,

As far as pre-built, lightweight alloy wheelsets are concerned, I'm
currently looking at 3:
Pacenti brevet, Ritchey Zeta II classic, and Hunt but leaning towards the
last 2. I've had experience with Ritchey's and really enjoyed them and
their clever J-bend design, but Hunt's are better stocked. Does anyone have
positive experience with Hunt wheels or do they lack longevity?

I'd also be inclined to hear about your custom-built lightweight wheelset
experiences. My goal weight is something in the 1600g range w/ skewers.

Cheers,
Andrew

[RBW] Re: Lightweight wheels question: J bend vs straight pull (Ritchey vs Hunt)

2023-01-16 Thread Piaw Na
I would consider Ted Neugent's
wheels: http://www.neugentcycling.com/Alloy-Wheels.html

The TwoX technology (16 drive side spokes, 8 non-drive side spokes so you
can have equal tension of spokes on both sides, with washers on the
non-drive side so you can tension them safely without the rim cracking)
makes a lot of sense to me. I've ordered a set and will report back when I
get some real riding experience. I build my own wheels and they're reliable
but his approach makes sense and he has the scale to get the right parts
drilled correctly in this case, and I can't build anything as light.

[RBW] FS: Clem H 59cm Complete (Custom Build)

2023-01-16 Thread Daniel
Selling my Clem H to declutter my garage (AKA my office). It's latest build
(where it got its least mileage) is as a trail bike and that's redundant
for me.

The size is 59cm which I measured as the following:
Seattube (CTC):58cm
Toptube (CTC):63cm
Chainstays:56cm
Headtube:21.75cm
HTA:72⁰
STA:72⁰
TT Slope:4⁰

This is an earlier green "H" with the cool swoopy seatstays build up 8
speed as follows:
Mech - rear:Deore XT
Mech - front:Deore XT
Crank:Suntour XC Pro
Bars:Nitto Bullmoose w/ Newbaums tape and ESI silicon grips
Brakes:Deore XT (black) v-brake
Brake Levers:Deore XT
Shifters:Suntour (mounted under the bars)…working OK but some slipping,
so I didn't trim the cables yet…you might prefer different shifters or
other positions.
Seatpost:OEM
Headset:Tange (original)
Rims:Velocity Cliffhangers
Hubs:Shimano Non-Series (FH-RS300 front / HB-T3000 rear)
Tires:Conti 29 x 2.6" (maxed out for this frame!) set up tubeless with
Orange Seal

Note: saddle, waterbottle cages, pedals, reflector triangle, trail bell and
any other accessories photographed are not included.

Pictures here . Shown with
82cm saddle height.

Price: $2k shipped in the lower 48. Other locations, please contact me.
Discount for SoCal (LA/OC/IE/SD) buyer since I won't have to pack and ship.

Want to buy or questions? Please email me off list.

[RBW] Re: Lightweight wheels question: J bend vs straight pull (Ritchey vs Hunt)

2023-01-16 Thread Will Boericke
DT Swiss 240 to a 450g rim (Archetype, DT 450, Kinlin TL-21, etc) all day
long. I own 2 sets of these - bombproof and light. All parts can be
easily found (no proprietary badged hubs that you need bearings for 10
years down the road and cannot find). J-bend spokes for the win. ERD of
the standard 22mm deep 450g rim is pretty constant (in the 597 range), so
when it dies you can replace easily. You could go fewer spokes to save
some grams, but unlikely you'd regret 32.

Alternatively, I have a set of Bitex hubs to older Pacenti SL23s that
definitely make that weight cut and have been low-maintenance (well, THOSE
Pacenti rims were okay; the ones on my cross bike were not). But I like
DTs freehub design better.

I would avoid a straight pull hubset because they're a little more finicky
to work with down the road, but not a deal breaker. I'm about to lace one
up for my fatbike but that's because it was a deal.

[RBW] Cutting tnreadless steer tube

2023-01-16 Thread Richard Rose
Perhaps a question for Gus owners only? Is there a consensus on cutting
down steering tubes? My Bosco bar will arrive in a day or two & I
anticipate I will end up with a lot of extra steerer. How much is too much
above the stem once the fit is dialed in? Not just an aesthetic issue but a
practical one as well.

[RBW] Re: Cutting tnreadless steer tube

2023-01-16 Thread Ed Carolipio
Unknown if there's a consensus but I personally cut the steerer so I can
install a spacer above the stem. That allows the stem cap to compress
against the spacer on assembly instead of the stem. Rule-of-thumb for me is
at least a 10mm spacer. I have a 20mm spacer now on my Gus with a Tosco
handlebar.

[RBW] Re: Cutting tnreadless steer tube

2023-01-16 Thread Joe Bernard
Ed's solution is probably a good guideline. I would add to not be in a
hurry to cut it, you may ride it for a while and realize Boscos aren't your
thing and will need extra steerer for a lower bar. I would put a bunch of
spacers on top and let it be weird for a couple months!

[RBW] Re: Tanaka 68mm fenders on a Joe Appa?

2023-01-16 Thread Nick Payne
They're not going to fit through the fork without a bit of work to narrow
them where they pass through. I have the VO 63mm fenders on my Appaloosa
(they actually measure 63.5mm), and there's only a fraction of a millimetre
clearance each side where they pass between the fork blades - I fitted
plastic frame protector dots on the inside of the fork blades each side to
prevent the paint being worn off by the fender.

The rear should fit OK, but it will probably need an indentation on the
drive side just above the chainstay to clear the chain when in your lowest
gear. The VO 63mm fenders come with this indentation already done, but
looking at the Tanaka fenders on the Soma website, I couldn't see that they
are similarly treated.
