[RBW] Re: Bike rack suggestions

2023-02-24 Thread Philip Williamson
1Up. Whatever car this goes on would need a hitch mount, with 2” preferred.

i worried about putting my (metal) fendered Quickbeam on the rack, and cut
short bits of pipe insulation, and imagined different ways to support the
fender from underneath, with something between the fender and the tire…
total overthink. Pipe insulation on the bar “protected the paint,” but it
just worked.

My car is a Kia Soul with a 2” hitch, and a single 1up rack that pretty
much always stays on the car.

If your rack needs to go on the car when the bike goes on, 1up sells
couture wall mounts, but I’d be fine throwing my rack under the porch until
I need it. (Actually, don’t do that. Aluminum reacts with soil contact and
will corrode if left sitting in the dirt too long - I learned that while
selling my dad’s hoarded Indian motorcycles, whoops)

Re: [RBW] FS: 650b hands on wheels wheelset and Brooks Flyer

2023-02-24 Thread Patrick Moore
Aaron: small world, in features and experience if not in proximity! But
note one thing I learned the hard and expensive way: OS Endurance works as
well as OS Regular in fat low pressure tubeless tires; but it was almost
worthless in 29 mm tires with tubes at 60 psi. But substituting OS Regular
did what I described.

In any event, good luck with the sale and getting new wheels. I too much
prefer tubeless off road. I said that you can patch tubes full of sealant,
but it sure ain't a job you'd want to do trailside in a desert with
sealant-dribbling tube and only sand on which to spread your stuff around.

My Rangers are mounted on far too narrow OEM 24mm OW Alex rims on a 2012
Monocog 29er with rear stays considerably too narrow for anything much over
55 mm, yet with age the Rangers have spread from 69 mm to (in front) 73 mm;
72 mm in back -- this at 13-15 psi; if you pump to 20 the tires expand so
much that the rear is locked against the stays. The rear tire is improperly
seated on the very many layers of Stan's rim tape and the runout brings the
knobs to within literally 1 mm of the left chainstay, 2 mm on right. I mean
to have the rear rim retaped (I leave such non-spec conversions to
professionals) and the tire seated properly. One day God willing I'll
replace the Monocog with a frame and wheels that allow a true 76 mm + 1 cm
side clearance at all 4 stays.

Re: [RBW] FS: 650b hands on wheels wheelset and Brooks Flyer

2023-02-24 Thread A. D. M.
Hey Patrick,

Yes, tubeless for goat heads. I’ve done sealant in tubes before, but find
better results with actual tubeless rims and tires. I have never had a flat
I couldn’t quickly fix on tubeless set up but have been stranded with
sealant in tubes. Though this was with OrangeSeal Endurance not regular.

I’m also running a WTB Ranger 29x3.0 tubeless on a Surly Rabbithole rim
(50mm). That tire is so glued to the rim it could not care less if the
sealant dried up in 2020. Lots of fun.

If anyone has a set of 650b wheels they’d be interested in trading, let me
know. Fixed or 9 speed+.

Thanks,

For thorns? Have you tried sealant in tubes? I find that OS *REGULAR* works
almost as well in tubes at pressures over 30 psi as OS Reg or Endurance in
low pressure tubeless tires; and I live where the goatheads flock and play.

My RH Elk Passes and Naches Passes are both paper thin EL models and with
OS *REGULAR* in the tubes I often pick up goatheads and watch them rotate
before breaking or falling off, yet very rarely have to patch a puncture.
(You can patch tubes containing sealant if you are careful and clean.)

15 psi on the Monocog 29er and that works too if you don't mind adding
extra cups and pounds of sealant to already heavy tubes. It was only for
the weight that I switched to "ghetto" tubeless with lots of tape (700C X
3" WTB Rangers on too-narrow 24 mm OW Alex OEM rims) and after you build up
a bit of semi-dry sealant caulk around the beads it works very well.

[RBW] FS: 650b hands on wheels wheelset and Brooks Flyer

2023-02-24 Thread A. D. M.
Hello Riv folks,

I recently purchased a Wilbury (build in progress, pics to come), but
unfortunately I need tubeless wheels out here in the desert. Sad because
this wheelset is really nice and you know it’ll last forever as Rich built
it. I digress.

These came off a demo bike so wheels have very low miles. The brake surface
looks nearly NOS. The front hub is a Shimano dynamo (DH3N71). I’ve used
this hub before and it’s great. Typical Shimano quality. The rear is a
FH-M570S LX series hub. Rims are Velocity Synergy with rear OC. 32 spoke.
Includes Col De Vie tires and tubes if you want them. I’m asking 350 and
split actual shipping. 8 speed Sunrace 11-32 cassette included.

The Brooks Flyer is also off the demo bike, so very low miles. Basically
NOS. I’d like $100 shipped or I’d trade for a B17 or Colt.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!

Best,

Aaron in El Paso

Re: [RBW] FS: Simworks Homage 26” x 1.95”

2023-02-24 Thread iamkeith

I tried sending a PM from my phone, but am not sure it went through. Maybe
you could send me one? I didn't mean to jamb this up and block others
indefinitely. I just won't be at a proper computer for a few days.

Also, I was after the pair of simworks tires - not the single gravel king
tire. That one is great, for anybody looking. It's too big for my bike,
too. I'm just looking for the goldilox size like the OP

Re: [RBW] Re: Front Derailleur Suggestions

2023-02-24 Thread Brian Forsee
Said mechanic here. There are many better than me but it was my full time
gig for 7 years so I've adjusted my share of FDs, and i don't think there
is any adjusting to get this combination of FD/crank/bb to work well. I've
been out of the game for a few years now so maybe i've just lost my touch!

I like the suggestions of trying a road double. The issue with this one is
the relatively deep inner cage of the FD would pinch the chain between it
and the big ring, below the teeth. The high position shown in matts photo
is the only position i could get it work in at all, and even then you have
to be incredibly ginger with it. I think a FD with a shallower inner cage
will work better. If you took the high limit screw out far enough it would
allow the FD to swing up enough to not pinch the chain, but then it threw
it over the big ring.

I knew the list members here would have a good suggestion on FD model/style!

[RBW] Re: wtb: 58cm quickbeam

2023-02-24 Thread Jason Zakaras
You are correct, Bill, that I have owned both QB and SO. However the SO
was a 56cm and I could never really dial it in to my liking and when I came
close, the aesthetic was off, to me. I ended up selling the SO, but
maintained the wheelset as they were brand new and I could potentially use
the with my qb. but I find that the current QB wheelset is perfect and I
don't anticipate using the second set as a replacement, there is just too
much similarity. Now I'm also sitting on a credit for waltworks and don't
have the need as it was for a fork for my evasion lite, which I have since
sold. I was thinking I would have Walt add s couplers to a bike that
could be used for my packraft adventures. A bike like the QB or Simple One
would be ideal so I can use the wheels and other parts I already have handy
and have a unique and ideal tool for said adventures.

This being said, I should probably sell the brand new Hands on Wheels, Rich
built 700c atlas wheels with Phil track hubs and 16/19 dos with gravel king
rubber and see if I can't find someone to buy the 275.00 credit for like
$150.00 and just deal with a little more tear down when I load my bike on
my raft.

If anyone is interested in either, let me know... or hurry and sell me a 58
QB not a super fan of the simple one, to me graphics, manufacture
location, head badge and name of said bike is important to me.

Cheers,

Jason

[RBW] Re: Ride Report: The Cabo Loop, BSC

2023-02-24 Thread John Rinker
Hey Craig, Yes, these are critical questions indeed. First, no, we were not
counting on any water other than what we were confident about from previous
reports. Some arroyos that had water were expected, and others were a
surprise and a gift.

We could carry about 8 litres between us and traveled with two Steri-pen UV
filters (very handy). Whenever we came across water we drank a couple of
litres and refilled bottles- our cells were plump and our bellies sloshed!

On the Eastern Cape, after rejoining the sea at Bahia de Los Sueños wild
water sources are scarce to non-existent until an arroyo in the mountains
above Cabo Frailes, and we only learned of this from an intrepid snowbird
we met at the beach in Frailes. We purchased water in towns and many
travelers in vans and campers we met were generous with their supplies
(though we never assumed).

While we were careful with our water, we never felt like we were in any
danger of not having or being able to get it. We rode the desert with a
very healthy respect for both its beauty and its potential danger.

Cheers,
John

[RBW] Re: Ride Report: The Cabo Loop, BSC

2023-02-24 Thread Craig Montgomery
As an old desert rat I have to ask the most important questions of such a
tour: How much water did you carry on the bikes? What was the farthest
distance between water supplies? Were you expecting the drainages to have
running water (a dangerous thing to do) and did you carry a filter?

[RBW] Re: wtb: 58cm quickbeam

2023-02-24 Thread Bill Lindsay
Jason

In September of 2022, when I was showing off my 58 Quickbeam build, you
stated explicitly that you have a 58 Simple One, and implied that you also
own a 58 Quickbeam. What's happened since then? Are you growing your
collection of singlespeeds? Or did you sell things and regret it? I'm
definitely in the "growing my collection of singlespeeds" phase. Since
adding a 58 Quickbeam last fall, I've already added another singlespeed and
have built 4 different 120mm rear wheels for the various build
configurations.
