Hey Chester thanks for the kind words: I'm just trying to pay forward the

Jared, I'm feeling your pain at letting this beautiful tandem go! I have
an orange size M HHH also, and I really hope to never have to sell it
because Leslie really enjoys our little outings on it. I also had an Ibis

I hope one of y'all reading will get off the fence and pull the trigger on

[RBW] Re: WTB: Suntour Cyclone GT long cage

2023-05-24 Thread George Schick
Eric - I've viewed the photo of your Cyclone GT as closely as possible. It
appears to be completely identical to the short cage Cyclone that I have
available, the only difference being the lengths of the derailler cages.
Therefore, if you can't get that spring fix to work the simplest repair
would be to use the derailler I have and just change out the short cage for
the long one on yours. The advantage these Sun Tour deraillers have over
some other makes is that the cage arm fastens directly to the spring body
vs. having the spring assembly bolting to the jockey wheel. You can have
mine just for the asking if you decide to go that route.
George

He said he would report back after trying it.

Personally I would consult with an experienced frame builder about
reaming out a seat tube especially with an expensive frame and have an
expert builder donut if I went that route.

I might've tempted to try it on a $50 Craiglist bike but not a nice
 bike I loved.

 Safe riding to all.

Re: [RBW] Underbiking

2023-05-24 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
I ride Tektro 559s with my AHH and with my former 650b Ram. I also think
they are great brakes. I ride on fire trails and some single track, but in
no way would beat mountain bikers going down hill. I can't say I remember
letting it fly too much except down Old Springs Trail near Tennessee Valley
Rd in the Marin Headlands. Not particularly rocky or rooty, but fun going
fast on a road bike.

I used Salsa Woodchippers (extreme flare) for quite a while and was able to
set up nice hood and drop positions and rode several doubles with it.

I have a Loyal rando bag on one of my Alex Singers. Very nice quality on par
with the pricier French bag I have on another bike. I like Loyal’s closures,
which are easier to use than the fiddly ones on my French bag.

Phil Woosley of Loyal Bags in Richmond CA is another Bay Area option. He's
a long-time shop rat; formerly at the late lamented Missing Link and now at
Blue Heron in Berkeley. He was Bruce Gordon's last bag maker, for about a
decade before Bruce shut down operations; you may recall a recent thread on
CR about Phil doing some bags forJim Merz.

I've got an early example of Phil's handlebar bag, acquired from an
iBOBer/RBWer few years back. It's quite shrewdly designed - larger at the
bottom than at the top, it directs the weight further downward in the bag
where it should be. I took it around to Phil at Blue Heron when I got
squeamish about forcing one of the non-rectangular delrin stiffeners into
the pocket sewn in on the inside; he was pleased to see that one of his old
bags was still kicking around, especially since his bags carry a lifetime
warranty. No warranty service needed here!

Phil works primarily in waxed canvas and leather, but his site used to
feature images of bags in modern ultralight (ahem) *petrochemically-derived*
materials. He's not really a web store guy; you're best off
emailing/phoning and talking to him about what you're looking for.

Like Reginald suggested, I bent a new tab onto the end of one of those
springs a year or two ago. It has held up so far, but the derailer is only
in use as a tensioner on a dinglespeed. Getting the bend angled so that it
would go back together correctly was a little bit of a nuisance, but if
nobody has an intact derailer for you, give it a try.

I'm using Continental Terraspeed 40s, which actually measure 38. There's

Re: [RBW] Underbiking

2023-05-24 Thread Patrick Moore
What size are the tires on the Roadini? I seem to recall reading that that
frame can take 42s?

I don't ride fast singletrack, with the exception of a few bosque trails
that are narrow due to vegetation, but they're flat; also sandy -- the sand
is why I had the #1 Matthews built, to get a more or less road position,
gearing, and feel with 60 mm 700C tires for the sand. And I very recently
put a drop bar (Spec Hover) on the Monocog which makes it very much more
pleasant to ride, but that has 3" tires.

When I took my '99 gofast fixed gear onto ditchbank roads a couple of
months ago with 42s (labeled) 39s (actual) in place of the 28s, it was
really fun, only that sort of tire is very limited because of our sand;
works fine in cold and wetter weather, but 3 hours of sun and heat and the
sand gets 2", 3", 4" deep -- no good. Even in March, still sub-freezing at
night, it was touchy in places, and I was using the direct/76" and low/57"
SA TF hub so I could power through the sandy bits. But the bike was so
nimble and flickable compared even to the #1 Matthews, which rides nicely,
and while both have drop bars, the lower bar position on the '99 did add to
the agile feeling, I expect. Of course, the Matthews is 32 lb with frame
bag and contents but no bottles or other luggage, while the '99 with the TF
weighed 18.7 lb (18 lb even with Phil and Dingle).

But I'm tempted to build up that '70s Libertas racing frame with (true) 38s
and road components and a fixed gear or at least a ss drivetrain; we'll see.

If I rode firm dirt trails, my Matthews #1 would get 44s right away; I'm
still thinking of swapping the Big Ones for Snoqualmie Passes.

My last 26er conversion had drop bars and 60 mm tires and a single 64"
(IIRC) fixed gear; lovely bike for pavement/sandy bosque trail transitions.
I've drop-barr'd other MTBs but those were mostly ridden for commuting on
pavement.

Funny: I recall trying my (drop bar'd) 1992 XO-1 off road, and finding it
very unpleasant; the front end was somehow just too squirrely in even
shallow sand. The later 1999 and 2003 26" wheel road customs were just as
agile, more serene on pavement in the transition between straight and
corner, and less nervous-making in shallow sand -- all of which supports my
long-held opinion that the XO-1 was an immature design immensely surpassed
by such road bikes as my 3 26" wheel customs, on one hand, and the original
Atlantis on the other.

[RBW] Re: Lightweight chi-chi saddlebag of about 9 liters / 61 ci

2023-05-24 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks all for the suggestions. I'll check them all. Actually, I did check
Ruthworks since I've owned at least 3 of his seat wedges -- yes, very well
made -- but he is no longer making customs and he doesn't have a saddlebag
in his product line.

[RBW] FS: Sackville Trunksacks, Olive & Khaki

2023-05-24 Thread Jacob Kersey
Hello RBW bunchers,

Found a pair of forgotten small Rivendell/Sackville Trunksacks in the back
of my closet, can't see myself using these much in the future after
switching up my rack setup, so hoping they'll find a new home where they'll
get a bit more action than they saw under my watch.

How about $60 shipped for each bag (CONUSA via Pirateship), or $110 shipped
if you want the pair? They're in excellent barely-used condition, see
photos here:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/qyKDSDDpbh6hRgUS7

PayPal F&F preferred, please message me directly with any questions or
interest.

Thanks folks

[RBW] FS: 62cm Hunqapillar Frameset

2023-05-24 Thread Daniel Rooke
Hello,

I have a nice 62cm Hunqapillar frameset for sale. I bought it built up off
the list about a year ago but it’s always been too big for me so I’m
reluctantly selling it. I think it’s been sold a few times here but seems
to be in good shape. There is some slight damage to the chain stay, which
is visible in one of the photos. Other than that some paint chips and
scratches and signs of use. Included with sale will be an FSA headset and
Shimano bottom bracket - both installed - and a 28.6” Nitto seat post.
This was one of the frames made with that size seat post. Additionally I
have tig-welded Nitto Bullmoose Handlebars that I could include for an
additional $120. They were never used but installed once.

As far as shipping I have a box I could use and can pack it carefully
myself. I think shipping would be approximately $100 but can get an exact
quote when sold and knowing what zip code I’m shipping to. Also, I can
take it to my local bike shop to have them pack and ship it. That will take
longer - the last time I inquired it was a 10 day lead time to pack and
ship, but that may have gone down. I would estimate an additional $100 for
that.

I'm thinking $1350 for the frameset plus whatever shipping option you
choose. Most payment methods would work.

[RBW] Re: FS: 2017 Rivendell Roadini 50cm - $1000

2023-05-24 Thread Chester
I'm the new owner and got the Roadini yesterday. Assembled it last night
and took it for a very short spin just now.

I want to say thanks to Ed for being an almost ridiculous paragon of
awesome throughout the whole deal. I had written him an e-mail just in case
"sale on hold pending discussions" meant that a sale to someone else was
not going to go through. As it turned out, it fell through and Ed wrote me
back to ask me if I was still interested. Yup!

I didn't really have questions, but was chatty, and Ed was indulging about
that and very generous and thoughtful about giving me notes on things he
thought I ought to know or anticipate, such as the stem maybe being too
short. He also generously instructed me to pay with Paypal Goods and
Services, which would offer some buyer protection, but given how public and
profuse his profile is on this group and on the Internet, I felt totally
comfortable paying him Friends and Family and saving him from paying a vig
to Paypal.

I sent payment in the middle of the night and Ed still had the bike dropped
off for shipment to me the next day. I received it two days later and I
want to share some pictures of his packing job, which was simply
breathtaking. You may think that a bicycle packing job is mundane and
cannot be breathtaking, but if you think that, you're wrong:

https://imgur.com/a/NZUIGJU

I feel like I swaddled my children when they were babies with less care and
certainly less diligence.

Thanks for everything, Ed!

[RBW] Plea for help with photos

2023-05-24 Thread John Bokman
Hi Rivsters.

I'm soliciting help in attaching photos to messages. In the past I have
used the paperclip to attach singular photos from my computer.

Now, I'm thinking it should, theoretically, be easier to attach multiple
pictures by using google photos (which I've just installed on my apple
phone). I am under the impression I can create a link to my album (selected
photos only of course) and then "share" the link to the group members.

Am I getting this right? Any recommendations before I proceed further?

Thanks all.

John

2023-05-24 Thread Houston Wilson
Hi everyone,

I'm looking forward to seeing y'all this Saturday at Griffith for our LA
Riv meet-up! All riders are welcome, Riv bike owners or not. Originally,
the meet-up was for 8 AM, but I want to push it back an hour to start in
some warmer weather. If anyone isn't cool with this, we can always go back
to the og time, just LMK.

*As a reminder, here are the details:*

When: 9 AM
Where: Franklin's Cafe across from the Greek at 2650 N Vermont Ave, Los
Angeles, CA 90027
Route: Loop around Vista del Valle to the Observatory around 10 mi with 1k
ft. of climbing

Optional Extras: If people want, we can throw in a pie stop at House of
Pies after the Observatory &/or add on the Hollywood Sign climb for folks
who want to do some more climbing!

Tony: I think that was my Atlantis you saw! I'd guess that was your

The Mt. Hollywood route is definitely a climb but it has some great
payoff! I usually just take a break or two on my way up.

[RBW] Re: Underbiking

2023-05-24 Thread Brady Smith
I bought a BMC La Cabra out of the first run and set it up with Ritchey
Beacon bars. My first season riding in the mountains around Salt Lake City
I did not see anyone else on drop bar bikes. The second year, I noticed a
few people riding gravel bikes on mellow singletrack. So far this year the
number of drop bar bikes has exploded. It could just be happenstance, but
there does seem to be a growing market for trail-ready bikes that are more
versatile than the standard mtb. I really like being able to ride
comfortably to the trail, riding some singletrack, and then transitioning
back to road for the trip home. The La Cabra has been a fun bikefishing rig
as well. One of these days, I'll take it bike camping. I sometimes wish I
had a hardtail or FS for riding in Park City or the more technical trails
near my parents in Western Colorado, but when push comes to shove I can't
justify the expense as long as the La Cabra is in my stable, at least for
the kind of riding I do.

The remake of the Wilderness Trail Bikes (WTB) Dirt Drop bar is the Nitto
RM3 Dirt Drop. Wonder if some patent kept them from reintroducing them
sooner that they did.

Thanks,

2023-05-24 Thread R. Alexis
Dirt Drop mountain bikes are currently at a resurgence. The number of
flared drop bars is at an all time high. The fact that Nitto finally
started making the the dirt drop probably cemented its return. I have
several bikes with Wilderness Trail Bikes Dirt Drop bars and one with a
flared Nitto RM014 flared drop on my Schwinn Voyageur touring bike. With
gravel bikes currently part of the mainstream mix flared drops have settled
in. The Surly Corner Bar Is a good example of the popularity of this type
of bar. https://surlybikes.com/parts/corner_bar

I have been a fan of the dirt drop bar since I first saw a 89 Trek 970
mountain bike built with them. I think they are the perfect all rounder
bar. The flair gives a nice, natural hand position, multiple hand
locations. The other bar bar I have been happy with are the Jones H-Bar.
Got a similar Surly Open Bar mounted on my Gary Fisher Gemini tandem in the
captains position.
