[RBW] Kucharik wool shorts with real chamois or Andiamos under street shorts

2023-07-07 Thread Patrick Moore
I was just perusing the new Riv email update and saw Andiamos.

I gave up nastily clinging lycra shorts with nasty, bulky pillow pads over
20 years ago, but when I ride over 30 miles I do sometimes like to wear
something a bit more bunch, crease, and chafe resistant than my usual
oversized nylon boxers under street shorts or Rapha Randonee shorts.

I've hoarded about 3 pairs of nice Kucharik wool shorts with real chamois
or -- for one pair -- a synthetic that is also minimalist.

But I'd rather have something synthetic for ease of laundering and an
undergarment that can be worn under any decent pair of shorts, as long as
it serves as well the basic purpose of bike shorts: prevent bunching and
chafing. Again, I'm not interested in padding; I chose the right saddle and
I have it and bar positioned properly.

So, those of you with relevant experience, will Andiamos be as comfortable
under Rapha touring shorts as wool Kuchariks with chamois?

Just to pipe in on CHOCO-MOOSE. I emailed Riv a while ago and they said
they may not restock them ever and/or is yet undecided on the fate of the
Chocomoose. I noticed they came into stock at bluelug and immediately
ordered a pair and love them. They feel how I imagine moustache bars should
feel when I imagined liking them. Sporty yet comfortable with lots of for
and aft space. Sportier than the Bosco. more comfortable than a drop. They
have become one of my favorite bars (even thought I think Loscos are more
classically handsome like a porteur bar) functionally the chocomoose are
fantastic on a long TT bike. (I got these bars as a potential option on a
appaloosa/hunqalpillar like build from a local builder but have stuck on my
clementine because I love them so)

Given the lesser price - by the time you pay for bulky shipping it's still
cheaper than Riv - plus you can order some fun blue lug merchandise since
there will be lots of room in that box.

The Bullseye replacement pulleys -- 8 speed? Or do these date from 7-speed
or even pre-7-speed days? -- on my rd work fine with an 11 sp chain. I
expect they'd work fine with a 12 speed chain.

[RBW] Re: Rebour saddle break in

2023-07-07 Thread Ryan
It's nice that these saddles are being made again. My 3rd 73/74 Peugeot
PX-10 bought in 1981 came with an Ideale 90 saddle; sometimes these bikes
specced the Brooks Professional, which my first 2 had and sometimes the
Ideale. Mine got caught in the rain numerous times and at one point, when
my Peugeot was stored inside my downtown apartment and my son was 18 months
to 2 years old I noticed the leather was drying out. No proofide to hand,
but what I did have was Vaseline for diaper rash, so I applied a liberal
coating to the top and underside of the saddle and blotted off the excess.
Worked like a charm. The saddle, surprisingly, is still in great shape,
although the labelling stamped into the leather has long since eroded after
40 years of benign neglect. I've proofided it every few years when I think
of it. The 200+ price tag seems spendy, but if the quality of the leather
used matches what I have, that saddle will last a long long time. I'm not
sure the leather in modern saddles is as high quality.
