56x56 was a standard "square measurement" dropbar road bike for decades.
The closest equivalents in the Riv line now would be the 51cm Homer and the
50/54 Roadinis.

[RBW] WTB: Tosco-moose Bars, Threadless for the Gus

2023-08-28 Thread Erik
I know this is a long shot, but I would love to land a Tosco-moose
threadless handlebar. I think they were sold briefly around the time of
the first run of the Gus Boots Wilsen. I'm looking to swap out my current
Gus cockpit for a swept-back option, but I want the moose configuration's
sturdiness.

Let me know if you have one burning a hole in your bike parts stash.

[RBW] FS: 54.5 Waterford Atlantis in Exceptional Condition

2023-08-28 Thread ADH
I've mentioned my bike in previous posts. I've finally come to terms with
selling it. It's listed on Craigslist in Boston. It is in exceptional
condition. Original photos of build are on flickr. Search on my username,
ahurvitz. Happy to work out shipping. Happy to answer any questions. Here
is the text of the listing and here is the link:

Rivendell Atlantis 54.5, Exc. Cond., Waterford frame - bicycles - by owner
- bike sale - craigslist

*I am selling my Waterford Atlantis, purchased new in 2008, and in
exceptional condition. It's a 54.5 cm frame (I'm 5'8"). I worked directly
with Grant when building it out. I have taken great care of it and can't
imagine a finer example. The frame and paint look virtually new. The only
blemish occurred when the chain jumped and slightly nicked the chainstay. I
subsequently wrapped it in cloth tape and shellacked it. (The nick can't be
seen and the chainstay looks cool.) The bike draws compliments wherever I
ride and looks great with Honjo fenders. The components are as
follows:Nitto: Noodle bars, Technomic stem, Crystal Fellow seatpost, and
rear rackDura Ace Bar End shifters, Deore XT Rear Derailleur, IRD front
derailleur, Shimano Headset, Chainrings and CassetteDeore XT hubs on Mavic

Rivendell Kevan BagBottle of Testor's 2135Bars are wrapped with cloth tape
and multi-colored twine and shellacked with Bulls-Eye Amber shellac. Fender
bolts are stylized (see picture) I am happy to arrange shipping. I know
this is a lot of money. I have invested a lot of money and I'm not sure
there is a finer Waterford Atlantis anywhere. Happy to answer any
questions.*

Thanks, Alan

Eric, I've recently been on a similar search. My feet are wide, though
not overly so. The bigger issue for me is that after a few years of
wearing exclusively foot-shaped shoes, such as Birkenstocks, Lems, and
Altras, and wearing Correct Toes to help with Morton's Neuroma, my feet
won't tolerate shoes that bunch up my toes. My big toes are the worst
offenders and cycling shoes commonly go for a pointy look. As a result,
even 'wide' cycling shoes that can accommodate high volume feet aren't
generally comfortable for me. So, please take my thoughts here with a
 grain of salt.

Bont has a wide fitting that has a decent amount of room but the shape
at the front didn't work for me. Many models (all?) are heat moldable,
making minor tweaks for comfort a possibility. I just posted a pair of
those on i-BOB after deciding that a minor adjustment wasn't going to cut
 it for me.

I also recently tried a series of Lakes on different lasts. Lake's
Sport and Competition lasts in wide fittings offer a good bit of room but
still come to a bit of a point. You might find they work for you, though.

The Race lasts are available in an extra wide that has a good bit of
 volume
through the body of the shoe but similarly did not work for me. Lake has
also introduced a Comfort Plus last (Lake Cycling Shoes – The Comfort
 Plus Last
 ).
They might win an award for 'least attractive cycling shoe' and the
mountain version I ordered won't win any weight weenie competitions, but
the fit is really good. The picture of the sole is not far off from some
of the 'foot shape' shoes. If you're considering the Stomp Lox, they
 might
 be an option.

Specialized has a new last for their high-end shoes that they have
modified based on their in-house fittings. It showed up recently in the
 S-Works Recon model (S-Works Recon | Specialized.com
 ). I ordered a pair last
week that I'm pretty certain are going back. I can confirm that they have
more volume than I expected. I pulled the insole out and used a
half-length insert with metatarsal pad to free up toe room and it's
a...pretty good... fit. But I don't want to pay that price for a shoe if
the fit is not just right.

Shimano has a tour last (LAST TECHNOLOGY | SHIMANO GEAR
 )

that is supposed to be roomier as well. I have a pair of SH-EX700s that
should land tomorrow. I'll follow up if those turn out to be a winner.

Finally, you already found the Stomp Lox. I would have ordered a pair
of those earlier in this misadventure had Ron not been sold out.

 Good luck!

Re: [RBW] Re: Ron's Ortho vs. Nitto Albatross

2023-08-28 Thread Davey Two Shoes
I rode albatross on a couple different bikes over the years and I never
really got on with them. I used the Terminal bar for a bit and I really
liked that.
Then the orthos came in stock and I bought them without thought of what I'd
actually do with them.

I've been running them on my Karate Monkey which is used as my toddler
hauler and mountain bike. I've got a couple days out on the single track I
normally ride and I've never had more fun. The width and flex of these bars
add a suppleness that has always been missing from the KM despite the wheel
and tire set up I would use. Combined with a B17 flyer I am so pleased.

I do need to up my frame size as the Medium is really just barely big
enough for me with a more traditional mtb set up. I like the bars enough to
change the frame.

If you're going to use the bike for more chonky gravel and some single
track I think this is where the argument for an Ortho over other options
really gains traction.

Thinking about building up a geared Surly LowSide for the Orthos.

Re: [RBW] Riv Ride: Chicago Lakefront Trail Recap

2023-08-28 Thread Richard Rose
Leah, this is pretty spectacular. I spent the summer of 1977 commuting the lakeside trail from the “near north” area to the loop on my PX10. I thought it was great then without ANY infrastructure. Now it is amazing & even more beautiful. And I could not be happier that you all chose the Billy Goat. That was a regular lunch spot that memorable summer. Elvis passed that summer. On occasion I would extend my commute riding either as far south or as far north as I could while still getting home before dark. I made it to Evanston a couple of times. Formative times, for sure. I MUST attend the next Chicago gathering. Thanks for sharing.Sent from my iPhoneOn Aug 27, 2023, at 10:19 PM, Bicycle Belle Ding Ding! wrote:We had 10 riders join us for our Chicago ride yesterday! In attendance: 1 silver Appaloosa (fun fact: it belonged to Will Keating) 1 green Hunq1 A. If you are in the area, please go and see them; they carry all of our favorite things. We took photos and belatedly hit the road.We had several miles to ride before connecting with Chicago’s famous Lakefront Trail. The clouds were thick and the winds were high. We dodged triathletes, throngs of people, and later, the Chicago Bears fans. We were treated to gorgeous scenery and the sounds of crashing waves on the shores of Lake Michigan as we pedaled along our path. The rain held off and we arrived intact (minus one Legolas front cantilever brake) and upright, ready for lunch. We at the famous Billy Goat Tavern and then some of us peeled off for other destinations. The Lone Wolf and I were fortunate to keep 2 of our guides, Sean and Davey, who graciously offered to ride us back to the trail that would lead us to Evanston. But first, they escorted us through the heart of Chicago, where we enjoyed fabulous bike infrastructure (including an elevated bike path!) and viewings of the city’s historical buildings. Marc and I had over 40 miles when we arrived back at the shop.Thank you to everyone who joined us! Below are a few photos, but even better, a link to the Post Ride Video on my Instagram. I’ll be changing the privacy back to “private” in a week or so, so try to view it before then.LeahInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/reel/CweJZD5gkCE/?igshid=NzZhOTFlYzFmZQ==
