Nice video. I like Russ's thing. It took me a while to come around to him.
For a while I consciously avoided it because of click bait titles (I'm
paraphrasing) like "Crust Vs Rivendell:Ultimate Face-off" & "Is the Sam
Hillborne still relevant in 2013".
I'm sure a good bit of people on this page have gear acquisition syndrome
relating to bikes & bike parts. I've certainly seen a lot come & go but the
two I've never sold are my Toyo Atlantis & my '81 Trek 510.

I’m perfectly happy with my Appaloosa but earlier this year i was torn
between it and waiting for the Hillborne release. I’m on the larger side
for a cyclist and their recommendation for the rider weight gave me pause.
I’d have loved to have a slightly shorter wheelbase for commuting
 (elevators are a bit tight).

Re: [RBW] Russ Roca/Path Less Pedaled reflects on his Sam Hillborne

2023-09-16 Thread Ted W
Unfortunately, the clickbait isn’t usually by choice for most Youtubers. In
order to run a successful YouTube channel, you have to play the
recommendation engine and that means clickbait titles, saying “like and
subscribe” in your videos and having silly thumbnails for your video,
usually of the host looking shocked or confused.

So I try not to blame Russ for that, he’s just trying to do what he has to
to run a successful business/channel in a world of AI and algorithms.

[RBW] Re: Homers Going Live in a Few Minutes

2023-09-16 Thread Dorothy C
I have been wondering all week what G.A.S. meant, and ran across it on the
Path Less Pedalled Sam thread - gear acquisition syndrome. I first came
across the idea in Mr Money Mustache’s blog where he calls it the Purchase
Justification Machine. I have 5 Rivendells now, and I am trying to quell
the urge to replace sizes on two of them - my 2015 46cm Appaloosa and 2019
45cm Clem, both 26” whees, where technically the next size up would be a
better fit and would open up 27.5 mountain bike tire sizes, but I am happy
with the setups I have on them now. My other three are 47cm 2020 Roadini
with Noodles, 50cm Roadini with Albastache and a 2019 55cm Cheviot with
Albatross bars.
I didn’t notice until recently that the 2023 45cm Clem L is now a 27.5/650b
wheel size, so there’s that. On the other hand, my Appaloosa is one of 2
bikes I own that can squeeze inside my Scion xB if I don’t have the Saris
trunk mount rack on the car, the other being the small Roadini, and my
current Clem fits the local bus racks, which the next size up probably
wouldn’t. Most of my riding is multi modal commuting so I need to keep that
in mind too.

That is a very sporty looking Hilsen. Slammed stem, 1x drivetrain. Modern
black bits here and there. I normally cringe at the Thomson bent-back

[RBW] Re: PDW Safety Tabs

2023-09-16 Thread Steve
Mark, OUCH!!! Your story puts an exclamation point on the issue. The
offending knobby in my case is a very low profile Conti Speed Max, still...

I have ample clearance for at least a 44mm slick. My next move will
probably be the RH Snoqualmie Pass tires. I would ditch the fenders and
stuff some 2.0" tires on the bike but they do such a great job of keeping
the drivetrain clean and the paint on the frame.

I bought up a bunch of the PDW release guys, in black and silver, so
there's never even a delay when I'm doing a fender install. Without them

What you need is a circa 2006-8 Saluki, which was the old name for the
Homer. 650 wheels, but shorter chainstays so it will fit your car (and
give you some variety) and was available in the same butternut/mustard
brown/yellow that the new batch of homers comes in. Maybe by the time you
find one, your desire will have cooled off. Probably not, but always good
to have a reason not to make spontaneous purchases - even ones you won't
regret.

2023-09-16 Thread Josh (BertoBerg)
Thanks, Bill!

I'm usually on the fence in regards to the bent-back Thomson as well. It
seems to work on some bikes and not on others. I think its working on my
Homer...?

When I got my Homer I wanted to build a Rivendell that wasn't like most
other Rivendells. The look is a little divisive I guess. I like it though.
Its a great ride!
