Yes Bedford, Texas.

I’ll be shipping via my shop, so it’ll be relatively cheap. I’m estimating
~$125-150 To most places in the lower 48.

[RBW] Re: retrofitting for Rohloff speedhub

2023-10-10 Thread WilletM

I have two Rohloff-equipped bikes (a chain-drive titanium Salsa Fargo and a
belt-drive Surly Krampus) and two Riv's (a Bombadil and a
Protovelo/Bombadil). If I had it all to do over again, I would probably
still go with Rohloff's on the non-Riv bikes and then Phil hubs or
something similar on the Riv's. I ride the Krampus all winter on heavily
sanded and mag chloride-slathered roads high up in Colorado, and the belt
and the hub (and the rest of the bike, really) are pretty well trashed by
springtime and in need of serious scrubbing and scheduled maintenance.
That said, I've had no un-scheduled maintenance or repairs needed in the
6-8 years that I've had the two Rohloff's, with the exception of replacing
the seals on the Fargo when the hub oil started to seep out a little too
much and make the disc rotor and other things back there lightly coated
with oil.

The main reasons why I would never consider retrofitting either of the
Riv's is WEIGHT (they are friggin' boat anchor-ly), aesthetics (they kind
of look like hub-motored e-bikes), and the exceptional high cost of
obtaining the parts and doing the frame mods.

Best of luck to you in whichever direction you decide to go.

Re: [RBW] Re: Carrying groceries on your bike

2023-10-10 Thread Dorothy C
I have a Burley Nomad and a Burley Travoy (seat post mount). I have found
that the axle hitch on the Nomad doesn’t fit on my little 26” Appaloosa as
the curved drop out protector comes in too tight to allow the Nomad hitch
to sit flat, so I leave the Nomad hitch on the Clem, and the Travoy hitch
on the Appa. I bought the extra shopping bags for the Travoy so loading it
works better than the big soft sided bag it comes with. I also have the
choice of Backabike bags and a Nitto basket rack and Wald racer basket on
the Clem if I am not shopping for as much stuff. The Clem is nice and
stable with panniers - it is a 26” wheel 2019 45cm.

[RBW] FS: Silver 2 Shifter w/ Mount, Nexave RR Rear Derailer

2023-10-10 Thread Johnny Alien
I am clearing out a few more things. I will try to get some photos together.

   1. Nexave rapid rise rear derailer. This is the kind that Rivendell has
a small stash of and uses only for builds. They sold some awhile ago but
they are long gone. The big pulley version. I picked this up because I
really wanted to use it on my Clem L but life it life right now and this is
filed into the "not going to happen anytime soon" category so off it goes.
I got this one from another RBW member. It came on their proto gallop and
they swapped it out. Brand new when installed and as far as I can tell
there was little miles ever put on it. *$90 shipped*
   2. Silver 2 shifter with the Riv mount. This is an x shifter for inside
use of the rear or outside mount of the front. Its friction so it doesn't
matter. My plan was to use it on the inside of the bar for the rear. It has
a brass bit that Rivendell sells. I will see if I have the silver but that
came with it. The mount is the Riv handlebar mount. Has the shim to so you
can use it with any kind of bars. Perfect for a 1x or if you just want to
do a friction thumb on one side. *$50 shipped*

[RBW] Re: is it blasphemous to ask how you think a Roadini would compare to a Crust Malocchio?

2023-10-10 Thread Piaw Na
Tire size should be the determining factor. If you don't need anything more
than 35mm on the rear the lighter bike is better. I'm a big fan of low BBs,
and the 700c version of the Malocchio fits the bill, but I think I'd be
unhappy about not being able to run 700x40mm Terra Speeds, so overall I'm
happy I went with the Roadini.

I'm also bothered by the non-matching front and rear brakes --- it's clear
that they screwed up on the manufacturing on the Malocchio, which also
means that I'm not so sure I'd trust them on the rest of the bike being to
spec. Then again, the slipping seatpost on the Roadini bothers me too ---
nobody's perfect.

[RBW] Re: is it blasphemous to ask how you think a Roadini would compare to a Crust Malocchio?

2023-10-10 Thread exliontamer
I'm currently selling a pre-production XL Malocchio & have actually ridden
both...and am looking for a 57cm Roadini. They are very different. The
Malocchio is incredibly lightweight. My XL, which is technically a 63cm
frame, weighs 6.3 lbs for the frame, fork, and headset with spacers. I can
say from the experience of owning a lot of XL steel frames that it's at
least a pound lighter all together than any classic lightweight steel bike
I've owned in that size (62cm & up).
As to the ride the Malocchio rides like a straight up road bike (my points
of comparison are my old RB-1 & my old Bianchi Reparto Corse with EL/OS).
It just happens to fit 42s (at least the pre-production model does) & is
aluminum light. I feel like people trying to pigeonhole the Roadini has
been beat into the ground so I'm not going to compare the two other than
saying they ride very different. The Malocchio is very responsive & the
Roadini (to me) rides like a springy Riv.
As to one being more or less multi-purpose? It really depends on what you
want to do and how you like a bike to fit & feel. 42 width tires can take
you a lot of places.

2023-10-10 Thread DavidP
Ronnie Romance has some thoughts (including weight) over at ronsbikesblog
.

I think you've basically summed it up. Though the Malocchio is more road
racy when compared to the the Roadini, in the grand scheme it's geometry is
still endurance biased. The tubing on the Malocchio is very lightweight.. I
recently picked up a prototype 57cm frameset that weighs 6lbs
(frame/fork/headset).

[RBW] Re: is it blasphemous to ask how you think a Roadini would compare to a Crust Malocchio?

2023-10-10 Thread Bill Lindsay
In the subject line the question was asked "is it blasphemous to ask how
you think a Roadini would compare to a Crust Malocchio?"

No, I don't think it's blasphemous to ask that. I think they are very
different bikes for sure.

Then the OP goes on to say "I know we're not supposed to talk about weight
but..."

I think you misunderstand. Lighter is almost always better, all else being
equal. Everyone knows this. If everybody had a gravity knob on their
bike, we would all peg it to the minimum. That's a fact. Lighter bikes
are easier to carry. Some people prefer the feel of a lighter bike because
they can "throw it around" more. The thing that gets contentious is when
people make statements like "That particular bike weighs X, therefore it is
a heavy slow pig, and nobody can be happy riding that tank". Or when
people say "I have a 22-pound road bike and I love it but I can't keep up
with the club rides, so I'm looking for a 18-pound road bike because it'll
go 5MPH faster".

It's fine to want a light bike, or to be curious about what a bike weighs.
When I do a "light build" I weigh every part, because I want to know. I
know that whatever it weighs, it's going to go a teeny tiny bit faster than
if it were heavier. The exchange rate is 12 pounds per MPH. Some people
get mad that the exchange rate is 12 pounds per MPH. They want to claim
"no way. I upgraded my road bike and dropped the weight by 1.5 pounds and
now it's WAY faster". The pointless discussion argument is claiming light
weight --> much faster. Just leave it at "I want a lighter bike because I
feel like it". It's fine to decide "I don't want to buy a Roadini because I
don't feel like buying a >20 pound road bike".

Anyway, the reported weight of the Malocchio is very low. They claim frame
and fork combined are under 6 pounds. Even with a headset it may still be
a hair under 6 pounds. My Rivendell Legolas weighed 6.30 pounds
frame+fork+headset, and that's about as light a frame as Rivendell can
make. My Roadini weighed 7.75 pounds for frame + fork + headset.

If you feel like building up an 18-pound road bike, it'll be a lot easier
to accomplish on a Malocchio than a Leo Roadini. Aside from their weight,
I think they are very different bikes. Most people see "different" and
want to decide which is better. I see "different" and use it as an excuse
to buy one of each, and enjoy the differences :)

Re: [RBW] Northern Hemisphere Fall / Autumn Riding Photos 2023

2023-10-10 Thread Brian Turner
I didn't read that as a slight. I think we can all agree that it's the norm
for just about any sort of organized ride, that the overwhelming majority
of riders are wearing some sort of "kit", and that usually entails brightly
colored, often logo / graphic heavy, form-fitting attire. Says nothing
about the riders themselves, but I think there's a certain amount of
refreshing individuality that's lacking in situations like that. When you
choose to dress differently, especially when you ride a classically styled
steel, lugged bicycle, you tend to stand out from the crowd. Sometimes, you
may even get comments that seem condescending or back-handed because you
are obviously "different" or simply because the commenter lacks a certain
amount of social tact. Surely, as Rivendell enthusiasts, we've all
experienced this to some extent. This reality is also the basis for Leah's
posts about participating in her group rides, or the recent thread about
style on the bike. I doubt any of us would be here if there wasn't just a
bit of a nonconformist, "outside the mainstream" spirit in us.

All nice smooth rolling, the feel light enough. Got my first flat on Bob
last week from a goathead. I've not had issues with them, mount easily and
lie in the bead bed perfectly. Same can be said about the Challenge

they are the tubeless compatible model. No flats yet.

I favour backpacks as a heavy guy (95 kg), as they enable me to use my legs
as shock absorbers. (I also used one for my work commute.)

I tried a front basket but did not like it for any kind of load.

It worked for me as I lived down a hill from my grocery stores and could
mostly coast home...

I have a pretty simple setup: rear rack with a basket. Here's the
configuration in action on my way to a DJ gig.

For bigger hauls I just throw panniers on either side of the rack

I know this probably has been discussed before.

If you use your bike for such errands what is your method of
 transporting groceries or other items?

I have one bike with a rack and a large Wald basket that can handle
a couple bags of groceries but sometimes as I rotate through my bikes
 I use
the method pictured below of tying cloth sacks around the handlebar
 balancing the load.

I think this can be a risky method.

I need to find some decent grocery panniers.

Today I weighed these 2 sacks in bathroom scales.

Dang...36.2 pounds. Glad it was only 2 miles return trip .

Re: [RBW] Are Paul brakes worth the money?

2023-10-10 Thread ascpgh
I replaced the OE Shimano (then) long reach calipers of my '02 Rambouillet
to get some braking in the wet which those groupless Shimanos failed to
provide, even with salmon pads. What I gained was braking with modulation
and adjustability far beyond what I had before. What I also got from these
was clearance for the right size fenders over 700x 28mm tires. The original
calipers had decreasing clearance beneath them as the brakes closed on the
rims. Just a better design as a caliper.

On top of all of that I had the opportunity to talk to Paul Price at his
Philly Bike Expo booth and was able to share my satisfaction and hear about
how much of that had been included in the design as they refined it.
Meeting him and having that conversation was worth the difference between
the Racers and any other option.
