[RBW] FS, Silver 2 shifters

2023-10-11 Thread Richard Rose
Hello Group. I just recently purchased these used units from this list. One
of those rare instances when just the item you are looking for pops up when
you are logged in. I was a little too quick with the "I'll take them!"
Shifters only - no mounts. Sold to me as "in good working order" and I have
no reason to believe otherwise. They look and feel good with all of the
parts present. There is some shiny surface degradation - the logos are worn
off - so not as pretty as new ones. I am selling as I no longer need them.
I paid $45.00 including shipping & would like to get that back. link here

[RBW] Bike Makeover Thread

2023-10-11 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
In the same vein as my Bike Style thread, I’m starting a Bike Makeover
thread.

Every now and then, I get the urge to change up the look of my favorite
Platypus. I have it perfect mechanically, but bags and grips and
occasionally, saddles, beg to be changed up. It’s fully autumn here in the
Great Lakes State, and my ivory Rivet was looking a little out of season. I
was gifted a chestnut Rivet from a dear RivSister, so I decided to pull it
out and put it on the bike. I took the brown Ergons from my other Platypus,
slapped them on and sent her a photo.

“That bike deserves prettier grips. Those are ugly,” she said, giving me
the unvarnished truth.

I looked again. She was right. Back to the drawing board. I finally found
these grips from Rivet Cycle Works - Deb told me she had these but didn’t
have them up on the website yet. She had the exact match to my chestnut
saddle and days later, I had these gorgeous stamped leather grips in hand.
The bike looks positively *tonal.* The colors of the paint throw out so
many different shades of pinks and reds, thanks to the abundant glitter in
the metallic; adding rich leather accessories only elevates the look. The
stamped designs on the leather give the bike some texture and add visual
interest at the handlebar area.

This Platypus is like a little autumn posey. Perfect and pretty, and wholly
appointed to its duty.

Now if I can just convince Deb to make these in ivory, so I have a pair to
match my ivory Rivet saddle when spring comes…

Attached in the next post are the before and afters.
Leah

[RBW] Re: is it blasphemous to ask how you think a Roadini would compare to a Crust Malocchio?

2023-10-11 Thread Bill Lindsay
Weight Weenie update. A frame set on my wish list for future fun builds
included a classic Vitus 979.

I had one as a teenager and did a pretty aggressive weight weenie build on
it. One of the weight weenie maneuvers was to run the smallest frame size
I could conceivably ride, and that made the bike not very fun to ride, so I
barely rode it. The Vitus 979 size was a "54". That was more like 55.5 cm
center to top.

A few years later while working at Missing Link we got a Vitus Carbone in
on trade in. I scooped up the bike, sold off most of the vintage parts on
a new secondhand sales platform in 1999 called ebay. I then did a weight
weenie commuter build on it, and had it a hair under 14.5 pounds. I
commuted on that bike a lot and it was tons of fun. I can't remember how
exactly it left my possession.

I just picked up a 979 in a more grown up "58" which should fit me like an
adult bike should. For fun I weighed it, and the frame is 1532g (3.38 lbs)
and the fork is 531g (1.17 lbs). That's 4.55 lbs frame + fork. We'll see
what kind of build I can pull together on this platform.

I've got two copies of the Deore XT M786, which should be perfecto for a
1x10 11-36 or an 11-42. I probably have an 11-36 10 speed cassette also,
if you need it. Let me know. I'm going to be away from my parts stash

Currently running a 1x10 right now: 46T crank in the front with the
aforementioned 11-28T in the rear, and non-indexed shifting friction
shifting on the bar end. I'm looking at a 10 or 11 spd cassette in the
11-36T or 44T range. Trying to avoid redoing the whole drivetrain with a
2x9 or 2x10 setup, but not entirely opposed to it.

[RBW] Why is he called tapebubba?

2023-10-11 Thread Bill Lindsay
On google groups, I have a tapebubba email. The reason for that is one of
my hobbies. I make wallets out of tape. Back when my kids were small I
had an etsy store, and I've sold ~1000 tape wallets. I do a lot less
taping now than I used to, but I still have a massive tape inventory, and
I'm on a mission to compress that inventory from 3 huge storage boxes down
to 2 huge storage boxes. So, I'm taping...

Up for offer is a batch of my most stripped down minimalist wallet. I call
it the Brevet Wallet. It features a drivers license window, one additional
internal pocket and one external pocket. The idea is you'll use your
Brevet wallet when all you need to carry is your drivers license, one
ATM/credit card, and a folded up $20 bill. It makes a perfect "clubbing
wallet" as well.

The differentiator between Tapebubba wallets and "duct tape wallets" is
that I optimize 5 different kinds of tape for various construction
elements. The not-so-secret weapon is gaffer tape, which is far better
than duct tape in abrasion resistance and reluctance to get sticky at the
edges.

Despite my use of premium tape, the Brevet Wallet lasts longest when not
overstuffed, and it's better not to run it in your hip pocket and sit on it
all day every day. It's best for a handlebar bag, a jersey pocket or a
front pocket.

Here's a Flickr link:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/45758191@N04/53250901126/in/album-72177720311848850/
That show my current inventory of 10 Brevet wallets. They are $10 each,
shipped. Let me know if you want one.

Re: [RBW] WTB/ISO New or Used Shimano Deore XT rear derailleur

2023-10-11 Thread Eric Daume
Are you running friction shifting, and how big of a cassette will you go?
Those will help determine what derailer you can run.

[RBW] Re: WTB/ISO New or Used Shimano Deore XT rear derailleur

2023-10-11 Thread aeroperf
Why not both? You can still get a Shimano M591 new, though it is an older
design, that works well with a 34-tooth cassette. This is a solid,
reliable design that Rivendell used to ship on their builds. It is Deore,
but not XT.
A Deore XT equivalent like the M772 (also older design) is rated for 43
teeth on the cassette, but I found mine a little more fiddly to set up than
the M591.
Those are both 9-speed. You can still get them both new. I’d say go the
route of a new derailleur of an older (proven) design.

[RBW] Re: WTB/ISO New or Used Shimano Deore XT rear derailleur

2023-10-11 Thread Will Boericke
Older is cheaper, but you risk worn-out in that move. I run an older (8sp
era) XT on a silly double setup I have and it has trouble getting down to
the small cog on the cassette all the time. You don't say how many speeds
you are working with but I assume 10 or fewer. I'd get a newer 9sp era XT.

Re: [RBW] Are Paul brakes worth the money?

2023-10-11 Thread Sarah Carlson
I held my breath when I got the Paul Motolites for my Atlantis and I'm glad
I did every time I ride it. I decided to save money by not getting the
levers and I regret that. "Saving money" now means that I will upgrade
my levers and pay for more labor putting them in (I am no bike mechanic). I
have the Paul levers on my other bike and is just so much more satisfying
in feel.

Can I chime in that a gift certificate is a perfect time to splurge on
something you wouldn't normally do for yourself? I bet whoever gifted you
that would love to see you with a really great set of beautiful functional
brakes.

I found an NOS Saluki recently with PAUL center pulls. The bike, once I
applied a couple of component swaps, is beautiful. Very…uh…svelte, for

of a better word. But those PAUL brakes just did not fit…to my eye anyway.
Too much industrial muscle and kind of stiff. I found some good old
Weinmann centerpulls, long reach—they fit the the theme perfectly and stop
surprisingly well. I sold the PAULS and put a wad of  in my pocket. YRMV,
 but I’m happy.

[RBW] WTB/ISO New or Used Shimano Deore XT rear derailleur

2023-10-11 Thread Caroline Golum
Hey RBOBs,

The time has finally come for a new rear derailleur! And this time I’d like
to expand my gear ratio, ideally without having to replace my single crank
with a double. My new favorite mechanic (shoutout to Damon at Nomad Cycles)
suggested I switch to the Deore XT (I’m running a 105 with 11-28T right now)

Now here’s my question: given the overall decline in quality
for.,…..everything on planet earth…….should I get a new rear derailleur or
hunt around on here/EBay for something a little older (not by much, c. 2009
or so).

I am open to your offers to all of the following:

NOS Bluemel 700C white rear fender with twelve used Bluemel fender struts
and hardware and small reflector - $80.00, plus shipping.

aftermarket gum hoods. No logos on the gum hoods. - $100.00, plus shipping.

rare Eclipse “Seat-Post Thing” made of cast aluminum. I recently machine

separation. Otherwise, it is very functional. I do not have the map case.
The original stabilizing bungees lost their elasticity over the years, thus
I will include two small newer black bungees. I would like to sell the bag,
bracket and the “Seat-Post Thing” altogether for $75.00, plus shipping.

4. One NOS Wolber 700c 36-hole M58 clincher rim ( Outside: 22.2mm/inside:
