Piaw, are you saying that you take your Roadini for a 3-week tour? How
much gear are you carrying?

elevates the look. The stamped designs on the leather give the bike some

This Platypus is like a little autumn posey. Perfect and pretty, and

Now if I can just convince Deb to make these in ivory, so I have a pair

For what my opinion is worth, I rather like the seatpost. With the bag
there, the seatpost doesn't draw attention and looks "right". However,
custom seat posts are available, at not inconsiderable cost. Ti Cycles
Fabrication (Portland) have some alluring options. Perhaps someone on this
list knows of a custom maker who could create one from chromoly? Custom
stems are available too.

I would be very hesitant to ream the seat tube unless it was Rivendell
approved.

A fine looking bicycle indeed.

I don’t need more setback than what I have - I bought this post for its setback and it’s adequate. This one is ugly but it is the only choice for 26.8. Stem: I have the Nitto extra tall stem and you cannot get it longer than 100mm. So, if I want to use a pretty seat post, I can, but I’d need to pitch my tall stem and sacrifice height for reach. So, I’m keeping my favorite stem and buying myself setback with that ugly post. Re: [RBW] Bike Makeover Thread

2023-10-12 Thread Jacob Byard
I used an adjustable reamer on my Gus. The affordable 27.2 reamer was out of stock and I couldn’t justify spending hundreds. I went slowly and used a 27.2 seatpost as my gauge. Once the post fit I stopped with the reamer. It was so simple and took about 10 minutes. My first time using a reamer too. I may not trust a bike shop to do it but if there’s a frame builder in your area they could easily handle it. Cheers,Jacob Sent from my iPhoneOn Oct 12, 2023, at 7:36 PM, Leah Peterson wrote:I’ve had enough experiences with bike shops to be very hesitant to hand them my bike for a task that could ruin the frame. [RBW] Re: FS: 50cm Roadini F/F - Dark Gold

2023-10-12 Thread Johnny Alien
I was hoping to maybe be able to hold onto this but it looks like thats not
the best path for me right now. No parts left but it will still come with
the stock seatpost, the 113 bottom bracket installed, and the extra 110
bottom bracket. Brand new with no issues. I could do *$1000 shipped.*

its not happening. This had some parts installed but is pretty much just
 as
it came from Rivendell. Never got to a point far enough to get any dings
 or
marks or anything. The fork is installed and the kalloy seatpost will of
course be included. The one thing I did do so far is swap the bottom
bracket from a 110 to a 113 so it would work better with a triple (or wide
range triple with a guard). I will include the 110 BB that came with it.
These cost around $1400 to get shipped to you from Rivendell. I will sell
this one for $1100 shipped anywhere in the USA. I really hate to do this
but hopefully someone here can help me out and also get a great looking
 bike.

Re: [RBW] Roadini or Homer

2023-10-12 Thread Piaw Na

Anyway, I could carry on and on, but I just wish to say that I find the two
*quite* different. The bike also feels noticeably bigger (the frame is a
58) which may also contribute. To shorten what could be a long story, I
came home, walked in the house, and ordered a Homer, which is set to arrive
today. Once I build it up, I intend to sell the Roadini. After about
thirty years of 3000mi annually, the Homer was instantly the bike that I'd
dreamt of for a long time. You can't really go wrong with either. To me
the question would come down to this: do you want to maximize the feeling
of quickness or gliding comfort? For me, there was no comparison. With
the Tektro side pulls and all of the same parts, I cannot tell a weight
difference between the two; perhaps the Paul brakes and extra bits nullify
the frame savings. Anyway, I was in a similar decision dilemma as you a
few years back and went with the Roadini, and while it all worked out in
the end, the Homer was the right choice for me.

I was going to say --- I wonder how you'll feel when you have to pack this
bike for a tour. What got me to not buy a Homer (other than the axle
spacing) was that one of my critical use cases is being able to put the
bike in a box, fly to a destination, and do a 3 week tour and bring it
back. When I mentioned that to Grant he admitted that it would take a much
bigger box than I was willing to put up with to do that.

2023-10-12 Thread Will Boericke
I do prefer 2x for bikes that see pavement. As a winter project thought
experiment, I built a bike with 46/26 x 11-28. The double 1x setup is
pretty awesome - I have a climbing set of gears and a cruising set of
gears. I still get plenty low with 26-28, 650b wheels and 175mm cranks.
It does require a long cage RD though.

[RBW] Bar plugs

2023-10-12 Thread Patrick Moore
Someone recently asked about rubber plugs with screw tightening and end cap
to cover handlebar ends. I suggested Velox. These may or may not be "Velox"
but they're the same thing:

And, PSA, VO is having a big sale; toe clip leathers* and old stock colored

[* I don't think I've ever had toke lips with leather wrappings, but I do
have strap pads and buttons on one pair of straps, I did buy a very nice
pair of Suntour XC Pros, and even bought a pair of wonderful near-NOS pair
of Duegis with wood soles just because. I'm tempted to buy some of these,
add to toe clips, and swap out some SPDs just because I like the idea, but
so far I've not been able to break away from my Shimano ("accept no

Re: [RBW] WTB/ISO New or Used Shimano Deore XT rear derailleur

2023-10-12 Thread Drew Saunders

How much do you like the 1 and 2T hops of the 11-28? If you find yourself
shifting 2 or more cogs often, then a very wide range cassette might be a
better fit, but if you like the fine tuning of your 11-28, then maybe it’s
time for a front derailleur.

I went from 3x9, 24-36-46 with 11-23 to a “one by with bailout gears”
setup: 26-42 with a 11-28 11 speed. I really do use the 42 as a 1X most
rides, and only shift the FD if I’m climbing a big hill, which turns out to
be about 1 ride in 4, or so. Plus, I’ll often only use the FD twice in a
ride, one down and one up shift. I may even replace my left Silver bar end
with a downtube shift lever instead. My physiology puts my left knee (but
not my right) awfully close to the handlebar end when I stand while riding,
so I have bumped the shifter once or twice a year.

A 30-46 with your 11-28 would let you keep what you have for some (most?)
of your riding, and give you a bailout chainring. A 30x28 is functionally
about the same as a 46x44.

Re: [RBW] Roadini or Homer

2023-10-12 Thread Keith Paugh
These are really great posts. Thanks for cataloging your experiences guys!I for one would LOVE to see photos of all three of those bikes (The Indy Fab, the Roadini, and the new Homer) if you have a moment to post them.k.On Oct 12, 2023, at 8:52 AM, ShumotoSoundRoom wrote:I own three steel bikes: A 2003 Independent Fabrication Independence (their full touring frame, designed by Mike Flanigan), a low trail rando frame with 650b wheels made by a small builder, and a 2020 Roadini.  The Indy Fab is a miraculous bike for loaded touring; incredibly stable with full panniers and surprisingly light and quick when stripped, given its stout tubing.  I rode it across the US in 2004, and it has seen many, many miles since.  I have converted my rando frame to function as  errand runner, for I determined over the course of thousands of miles, that I just don't like the feel of 650 wheels.  Since acquiring the Roadini in 2020, I've ridden nothing else.  It felt, in so many ways, like the perfect bike for my needs.  Exactly what I wanted from a "road + gravel" bike.  The vast majority of my riding is done alone, on some combination of gravel and road, rides falling between 20-70 miles.  I'm not as fast as I was in my twenties, thirties, or forties, but I keep a fairly brisk pace.  I generally ride with a lightweight frame bag (made by Swift Industries) with no other bags or racks on the bike.  I'm running Paul centerpulls which allows me to comfortably fit Rene Herse 38's, my favourite tires to date.  Until last week, I sort of figured that the Roadini would be the bike that I would ride for the rest of my life.  But then, after a short fifteen mile ride on mixed surfaces, on a different bike, everything changed.  My wife and I finally caved and bought our son a great bike, as he is almost sixteen and wishes to join me on longer rides.  He has just surpassed my height, so we bought him an A. Homer Hilsen as it will fit him longer if he keeps growing, and it seemed the most versatile of choices.  After the build was finished, I took the bike out to make sure that everything was working properly, and within a few miles, I quickly determined that this was without question, my favourite bike that I had ever ridden in my life.  No, it did not feel as quick as my Roadini, but it didn't feel as sluggish as my unloaded Indy Fab; which struck me as odd, given that the chain stays are MUCH longer on the Homer.  The comfort level was astounding.  There are moments on the Roadini where I hit a smooth stretch of recently paved road, the feeling of flying is accentuated and I think to myself, "this is such a glorious sensation!"  The Homer felt that way the entire ride.  On both road and gravel, I felt like I was simply gliding.  The steering felt a bit slower and the bike didn't accelerate as quickly, but the stability and comfort were so incredible that I just didn't care.  I live in New England and some of the old gravel roads can be rough, such that I normally lift off the saddle over bumps and hold the bars lightly.  Not so with the Homer.  It was, to my great surprise, even smoother than my Indy Fab.  I should note that I was using the same Rene Herse 38's.  Anyway, I could carry on and on, but I just wish to say that I find the two quite different.  The bike also feels noticeably bigger (the frame is a 58) which may also contribute.  To shorten what could be a long story, I came home, walked in the house, and ordered a Homer, which is set to arrive today.  Once I build it up, I intend to sell the Roadini.  After about thirty years of 3000mi annually, the Homer was instantly the bike that I'd dreamt of for a long time.  You can't really go wrong with either.  To me the question would come down to this: do you want to maximize the feeling of quickness or gliding comfort?  For me, there was no comparison.  With the Tektro side pulls and all of the same parts, I cannot tell a weight difference between the two; perhaps the Paul brakes and extra bits nullify the frame savings.  Anyway, I was in a similar decision dilemma as you a few years back and went with the Roadini, and while it all worked out in the end, the Homer was the right choice for me.  Good luck!   On Saturday, October 2, 2021 at 1:08:07 PM UTC-4 kwi...@weimar.edu wrote:The Homer will be 'heavier' or stiffer in terms of feel than the Roadini; I actually find the Roadini too stiff for my riding style.KarlOn Thu, Sep 23, 2021 at 7:38 AM Bones wrote:I know these comparisons have come up frequently, but here is my particular situation:I had a 62 Hillborne. I know this is an older thread, but I used this board a lot when I was
researching which "one" Riv to buy and couldn't get enough opinions.

In 2017, I decided on the 2016 51 cm Appaloosa. Strong, stable, smooth.
I was in heaven. Then, I purchased a 2019 54.5 Homer to keep at a second
location. Light, lively, sprightly. I've come to love this bike more.
It now has racks and fenders like the Appa (same tire--Gravel King slicks)
but still rides like it did before, much more fun for me than the Appa, For
me out of 10, Homer is a 10, Appa is a 9.

I'd guess that the Sam/Platy/Cheviot all ride similarly. Appa/Atlantis
ride most similarly. the only "lighter" bike I've ridden is Homer.

Not a bad decision in the bunch.

[RBW] FS: Velo Orange Saddle Bag and 2 piece lugged stem

2023-10-12 Thread James
Hello fellow steel-bike lovers
I'm selling these two items as a pair.

*The bag: *I bought it new, used it 5ish times, and it has been in my
basement for 6 months where it proceeded to get a little moldy. I haven'd
done anything about it, but I imagine some vinegar scrub would get it right
off.

*The stem: *Got this in a trade. It's a 2-piece. The "vertical" but says
nitto on it. The "horizontal" but says "J.T" in tiny print. No other
markings. I don't know who makes it. Dimensions are in photos. 25.4
clamp diameter. The bolt to clamp down on the handle bars is not included
because, well, I can't find it.

I'd like to sell to the same person so I can save on shipping. Assuming
shipping will be $25 I am asking $100 for them both. Shipped. If that's
unreasonable, shoot me an offer.

generally ride with a lightweight frame bag (made by Swift Industries) with
no other bags or racks on the bike. I'm running Paul centerpulls which
allows me to comfortably fit Rene Herse 38's, my favourite tires to date.
Until last week, I sort of figured that the Roadini would be the bike that
I would ride for the rest of my life. But then, after a short fifteen mile
ride on mixed surfaces, on a different bike, everything changed.

My wife and I finally caved and bought our son a great bike, as he is
almost sixteen and wishes to join me on longer rides. He has just
surpassed my height, so we bought him an A. Homer Hilsen as it will fit him
longer if he keeps growing, and it seemed the most versatile of choices.
After the build was finished, I took the bike out to make sure that
everything was working properly, and within a few miles, I quickly
determined that this was *without question*, my favourite bike that I had
ever ridden in my life. No, it did not feel as quick as my Roadini, but it
didn't feel as sluggish as my unloaded Indy Fab; which struck me as odd,
given that the chain stays are MUCH longer on the Homer. The comfort level
was astounding. There are moments on the Roadini where I hit a smooth
stretch of recently paved road, the feeling of flying is accentuated and I
think to myself, "this is such a glorious sensation!" The Homer felt that
way the* entire* ride. On both road and gravel, I felt like I was simply
gliding. The steering felt a bit slower and the bike didn't accelerate as
quickly, but the stability and comfort were so incredible that I just
didn't care. I live in New England and some of the old gravel roads can be
rough, such that I normally lift off the saddle over bumps and hold the
bars lightly. Not so with the Homer. It was, to my great surprise, even
smoother than my Indy Fab. I should note that I was using the same Rene
Herse 38's.

Good luck!

Many here have said that its not a big deal to get a bike shop to ream it
to 27.2 to allow for more seatpost options. I find it frustrating as well
but slightly less so because I don't need the extra setback.

I took the brown Ergons from my other Platypus, slapped them on and sent her a photo. “That bike deserves prettier grips. Those are ugly,” she said, giving me the unvarnished truth. I looked again. She was right. Back to the drawing board. I finally found these grips from Rivet Cycle Works - Deb told me she had these but didn’t have them up on the website yet. She had the exact match to my chestnut saddle and days later, I had these gorgeous stamped leather grips in hand. The bike looks positively tonal. The colors of the paint throw out so many different shades of pinks and reds, thanks to the abundant glitter in the metallic; adding rich leather accessories only elevates the look. The stamped designs on the leather give the bike some texture and add visual interest at the handlebar area. This Platypus is like a little autumn posey. Perfect and pretty, and wholly appointed to its duty. Now if I can just convince Deb to make these in ivory, so I have a pair to match my ivory Rivet saddle when spring comes…Attached in the next post are the before and afters.Leah

[RBW] Re: WTB/ISO New or Used Shimano Deore XT rear derailleur

Why not both? You can still get a Shimano M591 new, though it is an older
design, that works well with a 34-tooth cassette. This is a solid,
reliable design that Rivendell used to ship on their builds. It is Deore,
but not XT.
A Deore XT equivalent like the M772 (also older design) is rated for 43
teeth on the cassette

Did you accidentally type in 34 backwards? Because 34t is the nominal
maximum cog size for the M772 RD - matching the largest CS-M770 9-speed
cassette Shimano made. It usually copes with a 40t cog OK with the B screw
in a few turns.
