Re: [RBW] Considering trading my Ram for a Lightning Bolt

2023-10-16 Thread Joe Bernard
I've owned a Ram and Romulus (basically the same frame) and both rode great
unloaded. I briefly had a Lightning Bolt Disc which I greatly regret
selling, I agree that it's kinda bizarre without a load on the front. Very
twitchy, it didn't feel safe to me.

Also, wanted to clarify that the measurements are the same as the
production frame. The seat tube is 61cm ctc & just shy of 63cm ctt. The top

I'm sure there are still some out there to be found but the limited colors

I think this was the online retailer I had found the discontinued pink

This year's colors were turquoise and orange and looks like they did
make them up to 700x43 in the SS and SK this time around though only a few
size/color combos still seem to remain:

Re: [RBW] Considering trading my Ram for a Lightning Bolt

2023-10-16 Thread Stephen
Hey Max,

I currently have a Ram, and used to have a SS Breakaway lighting bolt. Ram
in ~62 or 63, LB in xl. I really liked both, but let the LB go because I
was just trying to thin things out. Its not a perfect comparison tubeset
wise, because they used beefier stuff on the breakaway versions, but i
think the geometry is supposed to be the same, I rode it with 650b x 42
tires w fenders, fairweather 'for cruise'. The handling on the LB is
definitely 'quicker' than the ram, or other rivs. It was most noticeable
when I had been riding riv geometry for a bit and then switched back, but
when I road the LB exclusively I quickly got used to it. As I write this
I'm thinking about how much I liked the bike and miss it a little bit. It
was light (ish), and springy (though that may have been tires). 650 b felt
quick. to accelerate. I had some difficulty achieving my preferred
handlebar height since I cut the steerer too low and the level top tube.
Wish I had set it up with drop bars while I had it, but was in a little bit
of an anti drop phase. I'm starting to ramble.

Both bikes are awesome, but the rambouillet might be one of my all time
favorites right now. Maybe I just wasn't a singlespeed guy. It is really
nice to have a bike that handles differently than riv's in my opinion, fun

Re: [RBW] Best way to arrange 2-cog manual shifting for "single speed" disc braked bicycle

2023-10-16 Thread Wesley
When I was using a monocog 29er as my winter bike, I had a triple speed:
three cogs, three chainrings (the third, lowest gear was used for maximum
torque to drive through deep snow without bogging down) . All three combos
added up to the same total teeth but the change in angles was enough that I
usually had to adjust the wheel in the dropout when changing gears. It
worked fine with the disc brakes.

It’s in overall great shape, with some very minor cable run on the NDS headtube, and some minor marks from a bike rack on the DS seat-stay and mid-stay. No dents or anything major. As I exclusively ran it singlespeed, the chain stay and hanger are in perfect shape, though the inside of the dropouts are a little marked up from fiddling with the ENO hub.
BB/seatpost/headset are included, as are “The Platypus Care Guide” and the accompanying documentary DVD Riv gave away. I think I even have the original paint covers for the canti-studs, but will need to look around for them.

Re: [RBW] Best way to arrange 2-cog manual shifting for "single speed" disc braked bicycle

2023-10-16 Thread DavidP
Yes, chain length remains the same in all cases - I guess what I meant to
say was 'rear center' (distance between bottom bracket and axle).

It's entirely possible a rear disc might work well enough over that ~3mm
range. I've never owned a disc braked bike with horizontal dropouts
allowing the axle to move independent of the caliper so I'm not sure about
the tolerances in setup.

Re: [RBW] Best way to arrange 2-cog manual shifting for "single speed" disc braked bicycle

2023-10-16 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks, Dave, good to know about the DOX 2-tooth gap fws.

Back to the question of disc brake and axle movement: the *chain length* will
remain the same; the axle will have to move to accommodate different size
cogs since I don't want a tensioner.* This of course assumes that one is
using horizontal dropouts or track ends; I'd like to stay with that
assumption until it is entirely and definitely ruled out.

When moving the chain from a 17 to to a 19 t cog and v/v the axle should
have to move only 1/4" or ~6 mm. This movement would be back to front and
v/v.

The rear caliper on the Monocog is mounted *above* the rotor (actually, it
seems to be a wee bit forward of the rotor centerline). Couldn't you mount
the caliper at top dead center of the rotor? And if so mounted, the rotor
would move only ~3 mm forward or back for a 2-tooth axle shift.

Could the caliper not accommodate a 1/8" or 3 mm movement fore and aft? If
I have to specify a particular disc brake, let's just say a cable operated
BB7.

I'll think more about the 2 rings/2 cogs arrangement. I could use, say, a
36X17 and 34 X 19 for 65" and 55". And certainly, a vertical dropout would
be much easier to use for manual chain shifting than track ends.

Or one could use a kickback hub: 32 X 21 for a 46" gear in direct, 64" in
138% overdrive.

All in all, I think I prefer the QR and horizontal dropout system, and if
disc brakes can't accomodate this then I'll stick to a single speed. [Or, I
could go back to a fixed off road bike where I wouldn't need a rear brake;
but I rather think I want a freewheel.

*The reason might sound silly but it's a valid one: One reason I took the
Monocog in trade was to have a snow bike. We very rarely get enough snow to
ride in but we do get a few days per year and I like riding in it. A few
years ago I found that wet gummy snow clogged the cassette and rear
derailleur of my Matthews and made the chain skip. Thus the thought of
getting a snow/sand single speed with 3" tires.

Thinking out loud; help me clarify my thoughts.

I think of devising a Monocog replacement, with 622X76/29X3" wheels,
but instead of a mono cog, with a duo cog. This hypothetical bike would
have disc brakes. I don't want to use a chain tensioner, and I prefer to
take advantage of the greater gear ratio differences between cogs of
different sizes compared to rings with the same tooth differences, and of
the consequent smaller axle movement required to adjust chain slack, so the
multiple cogs would be in the back and not on the crank.

On my beloved 1999 Joe Starck Riv Road Custom fixie I use a 17/19
Dingle on a Phil hub with a QR axle; it's very easy to stop, flip the QR
lever, move the chain, align the wheel, and tighten the QR.

That's what I imagine for the Monocog replacement.

 1. Disc brakes. But this bike would have disc bra

I’ve had the pink gravelking SK tires and bartape in waiting but with
no particular build planned. The once bright red anodized chainring guard
now faded to a pinkish hue I decided it was time to replace the mismatched
blackwall tires and add more color to complement the guard in its current
shade now with the other components somewhat solidified. Only a few weeks
and a handful of rides on this Lizard Skinz tape, however, it has worn so
rapidly on the outer layer to already look like it needs replacing from
months of hard use so will see how quickly it wears further from here.

A spare set of wheels are also now shod with purple Gravelking SS for a
more road oriented option though I mixed up the slightly different gearing
between wheels and still need to swap the tires or cogs/freewheels to
better match the gears and tread with terrain.

I have unfortunately not been getting in nearly as much riding as I’d
like between work and family commitments but with four complete bikes now
in rotation with different builds I’ve otherwise been somewhat consistent
with at least alternating them. A new personal goal is to try and ride
each at least once per week more frequently, even if just for a quick
 30min
loop. The more I ride, though, the more I tend to want to tweak things
here or there and do more make-overs!

Thanks for the kind words, Leah! Great find with the Rivet matching grips
and like Joe said, the Racing Platy just looks great with either attire,
but of course even more autumnal now with those chestnut touches.

Max - the yellow Yves Gomez looks terrific with the makeover and glad it
all worked out in the end despite the unfortunate turn with the 'as new'
claim.

The pink Gravelkings were one of their annual color specials from a
previous year. I forget which year these colors were specifically released
but stumbled upon them online somewhere even after they were discontinued.
I'm sure there are still some out there to be found but the limited colors
I believe are also always limited in model/size even with the initial
release. I'm currently using 700x32 SK and SS models.

I think this was the online retailer I had found the discontinued pink and
here is another previous limited color in the same 32mm size:
https://planetcyclery.com/components/wheels-tires-tubes/tires/panaracer-gravelking-sk-tire-700-x-32-tubeless-folding-astral-blue

This year's colors were turquoise and orange and looks like they did make
them up to 700x43 in the SS and SK this time around though only a few
size/color combos still seem to remain:

For you Clem you might be able to lower your stem a few inches to try to
fit it to your new preference.

Btw, were any of your bikes fit and set up by Analog Cycles? Just curious
if this is the ‘enlightened fit’ style.

2023-10-16 Thread Michael Ullmer
Update on what's available and some price drops:

Prices are net to me and don't include shipping. Will ship using Pirateship:

1) Bontrager Commuting Knickers - Medium - $15
--I've had these for years and wore them a lot back then, but haven't
really used them in the past 5+ years. Nice stretchy material. Shows some
wear, but no rips.

2) Kitsbow Gray Riding Polo Medium - $25
--The tag's been cut out, so can't confirm material, but I expect its a
merino/poly blend. Small snap pocket on the front with integrated glasses
cleaner. No holes, tears, etc.

4) Greenlite Tool Roll - Free with any purchase
--Don't remember when I got this. Made in Seattle, pretty dirty.

5) Map Case - Free with any purchase
--Picked this up from Swift Industries at a seconds sale many years back.
It has some velcro on it to strap it to the top of a bag/basket/etc.

6) DogBagz Pannier - $80
--Big panniers made of cordura. Made by a small bagmaker out of Seattle (
https://www.instagram.com/dog_bagz/?hl=en). One main rolltop compartment,
one flap pocket on the outside and water bottle pocket on one side.

9) MUSA Splats - $30
--I believe these are size A. I picked these up for my partner years ago,
she never used them though.

10) Seagull Bags /Organizer Accessory Bag - Free with any purchase
--This came with my first Seagull Messenger Bag I bought back in the early
2000s. Haven't used it in years.

[RBW] aluminum V steel rear rack

2023-10-16 Thread Bernard Duhon

Folks,
I outfitted my Waterford Tourer with aluminum rear rack .

Load was like 20 pd rear 12 pd front. Mostly good roads w/ a little gravel for
a week

I found it handled well.

I have an Indy Fab sport tourer converted to 650b. I am thinking that aluminum
  might work.
Anticipate 1 week of same touring.

What say ye?

even ask for input about your riding position because I don't recall seeing
