Interesting! Thanks Nick. And cool Atlantis. Do you by chance know which
era it is from? I had one that I believe was a 2003 Toyo that did not have
the s-curves.

Bothe in Calistoga. Good hike and bike campsite always available. Though
this will be a better option as the Vine Trail continues to be extende,
otherwise you get some time on Silverado Trail which is nice but … yeah,

[RBW] Re: Bosco for small bikes

2024-01-23 Thread iamkeith
Nice bike, Dave. I kind of interpreted it the same way as you. The caveat
being that not all old mtbs are created equal, and it probably works better
the older they are. By '88 / '89 or so, the frame angles had gotten so
steep, owing to NORBA fashion, that they required a good portion of the
rider's weight to be distributed to the handlebars. At least that's what
Ive concluded when trying to turn them into more upright riders. They just
feel twitchy without weight on the front.

This being the Riv list, I'm surprised no one has mentioned Mt Diablo.
There are sanctioned campgrounds, but there is a lot of space for

It was great way to spend my time during 2 weeks of Portland
snow+ice+wind. Did lots of research, and learned a ton more about
components I was only mildly interested in before. Shopping for NOS+used
parts on eBay was surprisingly fun, especially if you're after components
that most folks ignore. I watched all the "built by blue lug" videos,
highly recommend watching for both zen, appreciation of expertise, and
educational instruction (though they are not intentionally instructional).

[RBW] WTT 700c for 650b Tires

2024-01-23 Thread maxcr
I've restarted work on my 650b projects but I don't have much in terms of
tires in my parts bin so I figured I'd ask here:

Here is what I have for trade:

*Tires:*
My Cava UDs 700x42 (lots of tread left)
Or my Soma Shikoros 700x42 (only a few miles, like new)

For your 650b lightweight/supple tires (Extralight Rene Herse BabyShoe pass
would be ideal and I'm happy to throw $$ depending on what you have, but
other supple / light tires 42-48 will do)

What do you have?

Re: [RBW] Re: Bosco for small bikes

2024-01-23 Thread Patrick Moore
I have to differ about NORBA-era mountain bike conversions compared to
earlier, much slacker designs. I've converted 5 NORBA-era rigid mtbs to all
rounder use, with "tourist" and with drop bars -- the latter using upjutter
stems -- the 10 cm Nitto Dirt Drop worked very well; and I've converted at
least 1 slacker, pre-NORBA design. The NORBAs rode nicely -- sedately but
very pleasantly; a wee bit slower to turn in than my Ram -- this with
sufficiently fat tires; they're horrible with skinny tires; while the
slacker one rode like a wheelbarrow.

With upjutter stems I was able to get a comfortable drop bar position with
weight comfortably distributed despite the too-long top tubes, where I
could ride comfortably on the hoods and in the hooks with my torso and not
my shoulders-arms-hands taking the weight -- essentially, a relaxed road
bike position.

Different people, different preferences of course, but I do think that how
you set up a NORBA-type frame makes a huge difference in how it fits,
feels, and handles.

 Hey Damon,

I've put black hoods on the gum/silver levers and they fit fine. If I
remember correctly, the gum hoods had little nubs that would fit into
 holes
in the plastic body to secure it better, but the black ones didn't have
 the
nubs. They still fit just fine; in fact, the nubs made it harder to get
 the
gum hoods back on flush. So I'm sure it would also work for the way you're
describing. Here's a pic of both gum and black on my old Soma-

The gum levers have a 'grey' portion between the hood and the lever -
so can I assume if I put the gum hoods on originally black / silver
 levers,
I would have a gum / black / silver lever?

Has anyone swapped out hoods? Would love to see photos.

[RBW] B17 alternatives

2024-01-23 Thread Brenton Eastman
I have a B17 on my Sam that I love. 12 years old and showing very little
wear. It's the last thing I think about on all-day rides.

I bought a pre owned "broken in" C17 for my Roadini build and I think I'll
pass it along. Just feels like it will never be comfortable.

Anyone here have other saddles they enjoy? Maybe something lighter weight
and/or more modern looking, while still having all day comfort.

If not I'll just get another B17 and be content!

2024-01-23 Thread Don Lee
Hello all! Hoping to find an Atlantis 54.5 (Toyo or Waterford) complete or
frame. Please let me know if you have any leads!

Just learned of this group and love how informative the posts are. Also quite
envy of the awesome builds I’ve seen on here.

Hoping to join the club and share my enthusiasm with you all!

Thanks!
