Re: [RBW] Snapped Clem seat binder bolt

2024-04-16 Thread 'Michael Kashuba' via RBW Owners Bunch
Very interesting indeed. About a year after Rivendell built up my orange 60cm Appaloosa, I was on a “Bike Around the Buttes” ride in Northern California and my seat post began gradually slipping down. I tightened it a bit more at a mid-ride rest stop, and it broke in two…. without much torque at all. I was amazed…..Luckily, I was able to “borrow” a less essential but same size bolt from my pannier rack, and everything has been fine the last few years. Is it possible that Rivendell received a bad batch of bolts? Odd….Sent from my iPhoneOn Apr 16, 2024, at 9:10 PM, Diana H wrote:I also snapped the seat binder bolt on my new Platypus. 2024-04-16 Thread Diana H
I also snapped the seat binder bolt on my new Platypus. No amount of
tightening would keep my post from sliding. I posted about this on Reddit
and somebody told me that I needed to grease the threads. When I tried to
remove the bolt it snapped. I replaced with a random bolt from a hardware
store and used grease. Hasn't slipped again.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rosco MMM build photos

2024-04-16 Thread Stephen
Nice to meet you too Roberta!

Eric, the WI/Sugino cranks have definitely become a favorite, especially
with extra fat tires. Its nice to have the smaller bcd for that super
granny ring. I think I read somewhere that these frames were built around
some leftover/never made 64 hunqapillar forks, not sure of the truth of
that, got to ask will for the details sometime. Yeah, i'm gonna throw the
mark's rack back on and put the dyno on it. Planning on this being my daily
driver when in SF this summer.

Nolan, yes I agree! A big part of the appeal of this bike for me was that
it was sort of like a susie with the dropped tube and big tire clearance
(though not quite as big I think) but while being a bit shorter in the rear
end. Its still got long chainstays, just not super duper long.

And thanks Armand! I do have a fondness for the riv tigged frames, and they
still look so good in my opinion. Happy to have both lugged and tigged rivs.

2024-04-16 Thread Aaron Wilson
Thanks Jim! I'll have to ask around to see if I can try some. Maybe I
should switch my Microshift 9-speed shifter to friction to test the waters
in the mean time.

Glen, I used to use rapid fire, but really like how compact and simple
thumb shifters are. When my 11-speed commuter ghost shifts, I do miss the
reliability of a trigger shifter though.

[RBW] Re: FS: Sam Hillborne 51cm $200/obo

2024-04-16 Thread Robert Calton
Hi Doug, thanks again for some insight. It seems they didn't make a 51 in
the 2009 sage frame runs, it went from 48 to 52 and that measurement seems
too big to be a 48. Unless they had sage frames in the 2017 run of 51's,
that is, but I'm not sure when the color switch happened.

[RBW] Re: Thumb Shifter Advice

2024-04-16 Thread J J
Hi Aaron. I was just telling another list member privately that Paul
Thumbies + Shimano SL-BS77s are my idea of shifting nirvana. We have this
combo on five of our bikes. I use them strictly in friction mode and they
totally fulfilled my quest for awesome shifting. No need to explore
shifters anymore!

With the high-end drivetrain you're setting up, I can't imagine you will
find smoother, lighter, or more precise action.

The caveat is that what works for one person won't necessarily work for
someone else. It's subjective and idiosyncratic.

Good luck!

Jim

[RBW] Re: Long shot: Seeking information about a Sturmey Archer AR-8 hub: IGH + drum brake

2024-04-16 Thread Patrick Moore
I'm amazed at what arcana comes up from a request for obscure information.
I cannot be 100% certain without disassembling the hub in question, but
various inputs from several lists indicate that this "AR-8" hub is not an
ultra-close ratio racing 3 speed hub from 1938 ("AR-8") inexplicably
attached to a drum brake but a A*B*-8, an AW (133/100/75) wide ratio hub
very expectedly attached to a drum brake made in 1938 for very reasonable
use on an upright roadsters. Someone thought that the stamping read
"AB-*3"* but
I see an 8 when I look closely.

I Googled some more and found a couple of old FS ads for old roadsters with
AB-8 hubs as well as these SA links for the AB and the AB3, which both are
also on Sheldon's SA IGH crib chart:

AB: 1930s wide ratio with drum brake:
http://www.sturmey-archerheritage.com/index.php?page=history-detail&id=54

*And* the AB3: a modern (at least per Sheldon in 2010) iteration:
https://web.archive.org/web/20121029092003/http://www.sturmey-archer.com/products/hubs/cid/3/id/18/specs/1

But I think that the stamping reads "8" and not "3" -- again, AB hub, wide
ratio, plus drum brake, 1938.

So, over and out.

Thank you for those measurements. I'm trying to determine if this is indeed
the 52cm frame, but alas this older geometry chart

 doesn't

would it be possible to measure the top tube? That should determine

[RBW] Re: Thumb Shifter Advice

2024-04-16 Thread Glen
When I switched up my Atlantis to Billy Bars a few years ago I also ditched
the bar ends for a Shimano Sora rapid fire rear shifter and one of the
Sunrace front shifters set up for left inner mounting.

I really like that setup but if you don't have the real estate in front of
your grips, that the Billy Bars have, you may find that the shifter gets in
the way of grasping the bars just in front of the grip. The left side has
much more room to grasp there and if you spend a lot of time climbing in
that position you may find the Sora uncomfortable and prefer the Sunrace
for both sides.

It had been almost 20 years since I last had indexing on a road bike and
it's kind of a nice change. I love it on my mountain bike but its a 1X and
I would never try to shift an indexed 3X (again)

[RBW] Re: Seven Speed Hubs

2024-04-16 Thread Bill Lindsay
Mitchell

You should email Will about your questions. I had a similar idea about
going 126mm, but I imagine I would just machine down the end cap on my
lathe. Running the numbers, they say that the center to flange distances
for 135mm are: 38.3mm and 21.8mm. If we just lopped off 9mm from the left
to get to 126mm, that would shift the center over by 4.5mm, so the drive
side center to flange would become 17.3mm, and the non-drive-side center to
flange would be 42.8mm. That's a pretty extreme imbalance. 17mm is not
uncommon with 11-speed hubs, but 42.8mm is massive and would mean the NDS
tension would be really low. So, what I'd look for is to see if there's
room to take 2 or 3mm off the drive side end cap instead of taking it all
off the NDS. If we could get those center to flange numbers to around 40mm
and 20mm, that would be something I could be more comfortable with.

About a month ago, I rode the SFR 300k event. Prior to the 300k, I
rode the SFR 200k event and completed it successfully. I hoped to add to
my training, but I was only able to take one ride in the weekend ~28 hilly
miles to supplement my 4-5 days of commuting during the week.

Despite the lack of long miles, I was confident that if I stuck to my
plan of taking it easy on the hills and limiting my stopping time, then I
 could have a good outcome.

The 300k route is very similar to the Russian River 200k route, except
the extra 100k comes from riding from the out and back from San Francisco
towards Fairfax-Olema. There were a few extra km in the mostly flats
 around Santa Rosa too.

 I had around a 10 hour 200k, so I was targeting a 10 + 6 hour =16 hour
 300k.

I made my chicken sausage/egg/rice "sushi" rolls and then didn't stop
at all for food. I took a couple quick bathroom breaks and a water break,
but the only substantial time off the bike was my two flats.

Unfortunately my rear tire picked up some steel belted tire wires that
went through my Grand Bois Hetre tire and gave it a slow flat. These
annoying metal wires can only be removed by pliers, so it is a good idea
 to
carry one in your toolkit. I have a mini leatherman tool that I have in
 my
 bike bag.

--One thing I did notice was that my tire had some sidewall damage
despite being stored inside and the tire being relatively new. I booted
the tire with a sticky park tire boot and continued on to the end without
mishap. I'm not sure when the tire damage happened and need to make sure
to check my tires before a long ride more carefully.

Despite the 2 flats, I finished in about 16 hours, so overall it was a
good ride in that I reached my desired goal.

I couldn't do the SFR 400k, which was yesterday, ending today, due to
an orchestra concert today. It was a bit wet out there, so I hope
 everyone
who did it managed ok. Actually, a couple years ago I rode the 400k and
played in a concert the following day. I wasn't so confident this time!

Several years ago I rode a wet 400k and finished around 23 hours
(brutal!) and did the very stupid thing of trying to drive home without
taking a nap. I caught myself falling asleep on the drive home and could
have killed myself. I promise to rest before going home!

I'm sure to have at least one big ride (double century or 400k) to ride
this year, but I have to juggle that with my crazy schedule. Luckily my
daily commute is providing a good base of training for these rides.

[RBW] WTB: Short Pull Levers

2024-04-16 Thread Doug H.
I need a set of flat bar short pull levers for a handlebar swap. If you
have bar end or thumb shifters for 9 speed you'd sell let me know too.

I have a few parts to sell or trade if there is any interest: Velo Orange
Happy Stem 110 mm length and 31.8 bar clamp; well used Jitensha bars with
tape residue; short Nitto quill to threadless converter: Shimano long pull
flat bar levers (Alivio level likely) black and gray; MKS Sylvan pedals. Or
I can pay cash.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rosco MMM build photos

2024-04-16 Thread Armand Kizirian
Very nice! That main triangle is begging for a frame bag. It is massive!
Enjoy your wonderfully functional bicycle.

I was so close to getting a Rosco in my size last summer. Gave up waiting
for one and got a Platypus. I really think most of Riv's bikes should just
be tig'd like this. I never thought it made sense to have such a beautiful
and ornate frame with (typically) very cheap components. The Rosco's simply
feel more in line with the Riv philosophy (why do they value
labor-intensive pretty lugs but basically not be concerned with aesthetics
elsewhere?). Would be nice to have the more discreet Rosco to attract less
attention and be less concerned with beating the frame up.

Wanted to share some pics of my (sorta) recently new to me rosco as
I settle in and keep personalizing it.

I bought this bike from list member Kai back in February I think. I
really wasn't trying to expand the stable at that moment, but the riv
 mixte
propaganda had been working on my subconscious and Kai was selling
 this
thing a 15 minute ride away, and well, in the end I couldn't help
 myself.

This past week or so I've been diving into a serious bicycle spring
cleaning strip down /regrease/relube/ wipe off all the winter city
 scuzz
/etc.. from my bikes and its been an opportunity to try some new
 things
with the rosco, and I'm really liking how its turning out. Just using
 what
I have around, and stealing some parts from my appaloosa.

Couple of my favorite things about this build so far: Got the used
maxxis tires at the charlotte bike coop for $10 each to see how big o'
meats this frame can take. Getting a little close to those v brake
 cables..
I'll probably drop back down to 2.25s for the day to day, but these
 big
ones are fun. And I've had this nos xtr FD sitting in a drawer for a
 couple
years because I bought it at a swap before I knew to think about the
 clamp
size and its a 34.9. This bike has a 31.8 tube, and I was able to shim
 the
derailer by cutting a plastic 35mm film canister. Very happy thats
 working.

Hope y'all enjoy taking a gander at the bike:

I had a 60cm Cheviot and 48 knobbies from Rene Herse fit fine. I ended up
riding 38 slicks (Barlow Pass) as they felt better on pavement on that bike
and handled all the gravel and trails that I was doing at the time. I loved
both tires and the bike, but prefer the capability and clearance with the
48's in my Appaloosa. 42's like the Ultradynamico or Rene Herse would

[RBW] Re: Thumb Shifter Advice

2024-04-16 Thread DavidP
Usually when reversing shifters for inside mounting the left is kept as the
front shifter and the right as the rear. When you reverse index shifters in
this way you are forced to swap the front/rear shifting so that the left
shifts the rear. It's not wrong, just unconventional.

Because of the cable routing, inside mounted thumbshifters must be friction
because they need to be reversed, left/right. That said, clicks are pretty
great, you should run the expensive Shimano/Paul stuff, or the less
expensive Microshift thumbies. And that said, of my three bikes, two are
friction and also pretty great, but no inside thumbies for want of the

[RBW] Re: Gravel Tires for Cheviot

2024-04-16 Thread DavidP
I have the LBB 700x38s on a Sam-ish bike and they do just fine for mixed /
gravel use. They are heavy, but can be run at low pressure for a dampened
ride. They are true to size and bigger than the undersized 700x38
GravelKing slicks I have on another bike.

My Platypus has 700x50 GravelKing SKs (true to size) and they do well on
pavement and have surprisng grip on dirt.

Panaracer is dropping the 700x43 size across the GravelKing line and going
to 700x45, but you can still find 700x43 SKs for the time being.

Another option to consider is American Classic 700x45s - there is a range
of tread styles so you could get a smoother rear and a knobbier front.

Maybe I’ll be alone in this, but… Just ride it! For the type of riding on a
Chev, microknobs/file tread doesn’t help much. If you run bigger knobbies,
it may actually be dangerous with the tire clearance maxed out. Any stone
picked up by the tread could jam against the fork or chain/seat stays.
Plus, they’ll fling more rocks and chip paint (or teeth, as I found out

I’d just lower the pressure a bit and see how it goes.

[RBW] Re: Friction 9 V 10 speed

2024-04-16 Thread Ted Durant
On Monday, April 15, 2024 at 8:27:21 PM UTC-5 ber...@bernardduhon.com wrote:

Previous threads and literature suggests that the closer the cogs in 10 &
11 speeds makes for better friction shifting.

What has been your experience?

Like others, I have had mixed experience. A few observations -
1. On a very springy frame, derailer cables get yanked when you push hard
on the pedals. I have a Terraferma that's so flexible even I can make it
swing. I currently have some Cyclone derailers and Silver 1 shifters on
that bike, with a 9-speed cassette, and there's no way I could tighten the
shifters enough to keep it from ghost shifting if I do an out-of-the-saddle
stoplight sprint. Other than that, it's a nice, smooth-shifting experience.
It can be a little tricky to quiet the rear derailer when a cog is between
clicks of the shifter. Which leads to ...
2. The reduction in derailer actuation (the ratio of derailer movement to
cable movement) has been driven by the desire to have more cable movement
per cog, to improve index shifting. The same effect can be felt with
friction shifting, especially with shifters that use a micro-ratchet
mechanism (like Silver). If the derailer requires only a small amount of
cable movement to shift one cog, I find that the shifter can be between
clicks, requiring one extra click then a slight shove forward. This gets
pretty fiddly and would certainly be annoying if you're riding with the
carbon folks or are oxygen deprived at 13k feet. Which leads to ...
3. The Simplex retrofriction bar-end shifters are absolutely perfect for
shifting SRAM "exact actuation" (1.30 derailer actuation) derailers over
10-11 speed cassettes. The 1.30 derailer actuation requires a fair amount
of cable pull, and the Simplex bar-ends pull a lot of cable. Being
retrofriction instead of ratchets, you never have the problem of being
between clicks. Don't go putting Simplex retrofriction downtube levers on
your bike and think you'll get the same experience, though. The downtube
levers pull much less cable.

Bottom line ... you have to match your friction levers to your derailer and
cog count combo if you want a system that works without a lot of fiddling.
Not that fiddling is bad, necessarily. But you also should feel free to
decide that indexing is better for your style of riding.

Re: [RBW] Snapped Clem seat binder bolt

2024-04-16 Thread Gregory Kagay
My greased Roadini binder failed almost immediately with very little torque
applied. Seems it was slightly too short for the job. Replaced with this
bolt and this nut
. The new bolt is ever so slightly
long for the application but it works great. The blackish nut is not my
preference but I live in the country and was eager to source a robust
solution. (And not much of it shows as most of it is hidden inside the seat
lug.) Delivered, this was a $30 resolution (which makes me feel foolish);
Rivendell could do so much better here.

[RBW] Thumb Shifter Advice

2024-04-16 Thread Aaron Wilson
I'll be building up one of the new Susies (in green) soon and I'm *debating
my thumb-shifter options*. Do you have some advice?

I'll be setting up

   - 9-speed Shimano RD (RD-M952)
   - Triple Shimano FD (FD-M953) on a Silver Wide-low double
   - Inside-mount thumb shifters on Sim Works (Nitto) Ramble bars
   - Preferably, indexed shifting for the rear

I know of

   - *Microshift*. I've got a lot of miles on their 11-speed thumb shifter
on my commuter and I get ghost shifts no matter how much I tweak it. I have
a lot fewer miles on their 2/3x9 pair on my 90s mountain bike and they
   haven't given me trouble.
   - *Paul Thumbie + Shimano SL-BS77*. Tempting, but expensive. Do you have
experience with this setup? Can you compare it with Microshift?
   - *Silver2*. Pretty, but not indexed and I'm a scared wimp. Can you
convince me friction shifting is the way to go?
   - *Are there other options* (including used or NOS) I should consider?

Thanks in advance,
Aaron

[RBW] Re: Seven Speed Hubs

2024-04-16 Thread Mitchell Gass
These check a lot of my boxes: great for low-dish wheels, cold-forged
body, steel cassette body, cartridge bearings. I was going to contact Riv
with some questions about them, but maybe people here already know the
answers:

- Do they include quick releases?
- They're currently 135 mm OLN only. When will the end caps for 130 mm OLN
be available?
- Are there any thoughts about getting end caps for 126 OLN?
- What's involved in replacing the bearings and lubing the pawls? What
tools are needed? What bearings does it take? Is there, or will there be, a
video showing how to take these apart and put them back together?
- Will Riv carry spare parts for these, such as replacement pawls and
cassette bodies?

Re: [RBW] Friction 9 V 10 speed

2024-04-16 Thread Patrick Moore
+ 1 for the old Suntours.

OTOH, I got wonderful friction shifting with gen-1 Silvers, a Microshift
road rear derailleur, and a home-brew 9-speed cogset (used 9 sp spacers but
cogs were probably mix of 9, 8, 7, and possibly Uniglde). So a great deal
depends on the match between shifter and derailleur. In fact, I think that
this shifter/derailleur combination may have been an ideal pairing given
the cog mismatches, tho' the Barcon + DA 7402 combo today (shifting 10) is
as good if not even better, but now using proper 10 sp cogs and an 11 sp
chain, and I do prefer the action, the absence of slipping, and the
durability (broke 2 Silvers when bike fell over) of the Barcons.

OTOH again, I recall back about 2000 doing some mountain bike day tours
around Aspen and using the current mid-level Shimano indexed trigger
shifting of the time, both front and rear. I remember being very glad at
how well it all worked -- shove, snick, new gear -- when oxygen deprived
climbing a steep hill at 13K feet. And certainly the 7 speed indexed dt
rear shifting on my Sante equipped Falcon was absolutely flawless.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rosco MMM build photos

2024-04-16 Thread Eric Marth
This is a sweet build! I'd like to get one of those White Industries /
Sugino cranks some day.

Is there any write-up or an ancient email about the idea behind the frame
design? Will's Massive Mountain Mixte. Do we have an oral history at least?

Are you gonna wire up a dynamo back up in the future?

Lovely. With scenery like that I’d b on my bike all day. I think the Appa
and Homer are complimentary bikes. (I’m the past , owner of both). Both
fabulous bikes.
