[RBW] Rivendell (Roadini) Geometry

2024-04-27 Thread Jay
I've been enjoying my first Riv, a Roadini, since getting it in February.
Just one thing I feel like I'm struggling with, saddle set back.

It's a size 57, I'm 5'11 and my PHB meant a 57 or 54 would work. It came
with the setback seat post and that put me really far behind the BB
compared to my other bikes, so I got a zero offset post and that helped
things, but I'm still running my Brooks C17 pushed 3/4 of the way forward
on the rails. Funny thing is my Salsa Fargo, which has a 73 degree ST
angle, vs. 72 on the Roadini, running the same saddle, and less set back
(also on a zero offset post).  I can feel the difference when I'm pedaling;
on the Fargo, my pedal stroke feels really good. On the Roadini it feels
like the pedals are out in front and I'm over-using posterior chain in an
unnatural pedal stroke. I measure setback on both bikes and the Fargo is
coming out as saddle 5.5cm setback from BB, 7cm on the Roadini.

Anyone else notice this? I may try pushing the saddle all the way forward
on the rails, then maybe set post up a bit, but wanted to ask this question
first.

Thanks!

[RBW] Re: Jimmy's Hunq!!1

2024-04-27 Thread J J
Thanks Eric and Jim! Will's blog post was the first I saw of the full paint
job and the build. Up to yesterday afternoon I had only seen a few low res
teaser images, so I've been soaking in Will's fantastic photos. I'm blown
away by the care and detail of Rick's paint job. I had told Rick that I
hope he has fun with the bike, and it feels like he did. And Antonio did
such a clean, lovely build. Thanks Antonio! I can't wait to see the bike in
person. And to ride it!

@Jim, the blue ring around the pump peg really got me, too, as did the
lining around the top and bottom of the head tube and the little circle
cutouts in the fork crown. Incredible detail and beyond what I was
expecting.

@Eric, thanks for the kind words. I can see the deep rusty pink tones now
that you mention it. Like I said in the writeup, copper is super tricky.
There are so many colors posing as copper! You've got a great eye about the
lime
green Newbaum's with amber shellac. I went back and forth on tape and Will
urged the lime. I'm stoked about how it turned out.

This project has been a long time in the making. Everyone I worked with,
directly and indirectly — Rick on the paint, Rich on the wheels, Will and
the entire Rivendell crew on everything else — was super welcoming,
accessible, and engaging. And they made the entire process a lot of fun,
which above all is what bikes should be about as far as I'm concerned.

Well, not quite, as you'd need very long dropouts/track ends indeed to
accommodate 7 teeth: almost a good *usable* Inch of axle travel -- usable
travel is not at all the same as theoretical travel. And as for a chain
tensioner: with a single rear cog and 3 rings your tensioner would not have
to move laterally as the chain was shifted, while 2 or 3 cogs would require
chain tensioner re-alignment. So I've argued myself into agreeing with the
3X1 idea. Only, the ideal system for 3 wide ratio gears is the IGH.

Re: [RBW] The 3x1 road bike. Anticipating some of your RoadUNO builds

2024-04-27 Thread Patrick Moore
We had a similar conversation back in February and, among the topic
discussed was, why 3X1 instead of 1X3? Bill pointed out that commercially
available 3 speed fws of good quality with huge tooth gaps are hard to
find, whereas anyone can find a triple crank.

But I keep coming back to theoretical efficiencies: IIRC, the gearing
effect of tooth jumps in back are more or less double what they are in
front. So the question is, how to get just 2 or 3 big jumps in back without
a IGH.

Question: I've never followed BMX, but IIRC I've read of 2-speed BMX
freehubs; was that really a thing? If so, perhaps that would be the ideal
low-cog-count/big-ratio-jump system. And then there are those packages of
spacers and ss HG-freehub-compatible kits that allow you to use just 1 --
or a few -- cogs on your 7-8-9-etc.-speed freehub.

Long ago I asked Phil Wood & Co. if they'd build me a fixed hub that would
accept 3 sprockets. They replied, "Sure! Figure on about $400" -- this in
circa 2000 dollars which per the DoL Inflation Calculator is ~$740 in 2024
monopoly money. With horizontals or track ends and a good steel internal
cam QR you could have yourself a very good time without the need for a
lousy (and FWIW considerably less that I paid for my TF hub). A 44 X
17/20/24 would give you 70", 60", and 50", a good spread with relatively
unobtrusive hardware and bulk.

With your 7402 "tensioner" you could run a tiny short cable, such that
twisting the barrel adjuster pulls it from the 17 to the 19. I run that
setup on a different bike.

I'm summiting mount Diablo once a month, and I'm plotting which month this
summer I ride my 3x1 Romulus. Maybe July.

The Dream bar was the classic standard drop bar made for Rivendell by
Nitto. If I remember correctly its what they offered prior to the Noodle.
It was sold along with the Noodle bar for a bit before they just dropped it
because the Noodle was the drop they would suggest over all others.

 the
26.0 clamp diameter. I personally have had 46 cm Noodles, the Fairweather
174AA short shallow Noodle in 46 cm, and this week I swapped the 54 cm
 ones
off my Hunqapillar in favor of the new Ritchey Corralitos bar which may be
my favorite drop bar for a longish top tube bike. I wanted to like the
Noodle, but they have too much drop for me.

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: Soba Handlebars

2024-04-27 Thread Conway Bennett
Bill,

Thanks for the clarification. My posts weren't meant to be adversarial,
just pedantic. I came into Riv via EcoVelo ~2010, and I didn't own my
first Riv until 2013, so the "Soba" predates me, and I thought that y'all
were using it colloquially for "So Bar"--the marketing content from Sim
Works makes references to literal soba noodles. I'm curious if the
contemporary "So Bar" is inspired by the "Soba".

Re: [RBW] Re: WTB: Soba Handlebars

2024-04-27 Thread Igor
Retro-Gression sells both the Noodle (Which is the M177) and the Dream
(M176). Both, per the description, are designed by Rivendell, and I notice
that the M176 is 26mm clamp, has a 140mm drop/90mm reach - is this the Soba
or something
else? https://www.retro-gression.com/products/nitto-m176-dream-handlebar
