[RBW] Re: Front derailleur options for 38/24 front, 11-36 rear?

2024-05-12 Thread Robert Calton
Good question, chef. I did consider other options, including a 42T 1x setup
like I had on my previous bicycle. When I looked at Rivendell's build
options and other writings, they suggested the 38/24 for all-around riding
on a variety of surfaces and if you didn't have a preference, go with that.
My riding generally involves city pavement, slow roll group rides, rail
trails, and only light groomed wooded trails all at party pace. I generally
didn't pedal much downhill anyway on the last bike I had, so I figured this
would be a good starting point.

Good thing is, these Silver cranksets hold their value well and if I feel
like I need something a little bigger, I can always switch down the road at
a minimal cost :)

Re: [RBW] Re: For Leah re my Gallop

2024-05-12 Thread Valerie Yates
Leah- love it! When you buy used, you can pretty much break-even on the
subsequent resale. It is just a matter of timing liquidity. And you could
possibly transfer parts over to the new frame, if you like the set-up, and
sell just the frame. Or decide that lugs aren't crucial. Many possible
outcomes. Eager to see how it all plays out.

Doug - love the grips. I saw that demo too but never tried it. Yours look
terrific. Very striking and fun.

Sarah - glad you enjoyed the pics.😁

2024-05-12 Thread Jason Fuller
Planned impulsivity, I like it. That's a very sound plan in my opinion
because you can likely score a TIG Roadini for a good price, and all the
parts would swap over to either a lugged Roadini if you love it, or a CHG
if you think you want something longer. I know you're not trying to be,
but I think you're being very practical here!

[RBW] Re: Front derailleur options for 38/24 front, 11-36 rear?

2024-05-12 Thread Stephen Durfee
Hi Robert, just wondering if you have considered a 42/28, or other options
for the front?
I have been running a Silver 38/24 with a chainguard on my All-Rounder for
the past year or so, and I'm planning on converting to a triple, swapping
out the guard for a third, 46T ring. I found the smaller design of the
crank to be frustrating ...even on level ground, I'll be pushing the limit.
Downhills are only for coasting. That said, the smallest ring of the
freewheel has 13T.
When I built my Homer, I went with a VO 46/30 compact double. So far, so
good!

[RBW] Re: East Bay Dirty Route Recs

2024-05-12 Thread Sarah Carlson
Hey there!

You have lots options and an easy to get to fun one is Wildcat canyon. You
can get off at Del Norte BART and go a little ways on the Ohlone Greenway
before taking some streets to connect up with Wildcat Canyon (sorry I can't
fill in the gaps on that one, this is where we need google maps to help. OR
you can get out at N, Berkeley BART and ride the Greenway out past Del
Norte BART and do the same thing. You can either out and back or make it a
loop, exit the park after the Little farm (last little bit is no bikes so
don't run over little children) go up up up Canon, and then you can take a
nice descent down Spruce to Los Angeles, connect with Marin and back to the
Greenway and BART. That's a bit less miles but you can make it more once
you are up in Tilden.
