Re: [RBW] The 3x1 road bike. Anticipating some of your RoadUNO builds

2024-06-08 Thread Bill Lindsay
I wanted to get my 3x1 up Diablo before all you 3x1 RoadUno riders have the
chance!

Today I finished my 6th summit of Mount Diablo, on my 6th different bike.
I've summited Mount Diablo every month of 2024 (so far).
This time it was on the RoadTrio, my version of a RoadUno 3x1 build. In
the last few shots I've been rounding out the 3x8 sport touring
configuration. Part of the rear end set up was to enable a quick change,
and I did the quick change against the clock last night. In under 5
minutes I had it switched from 3x8 to 3x1. I had also switched out the
crankset to a very slightly different gear range: a 94mm BCD Ritchey
crankset let me run 22/34/46 rings, instead of the 24/36/46 of the 110 BCD
Ritchey crankset that had been there. Whether that difference was critical
for my ride today is debatable. What is certain is that the 22x18, 31-inch
gear was welcome.

Even though I only had to shift like 5 times all day, this front end
shifting is totally liquid, and while riding each gear rode silently like a
single speed. The White Industries ENO freewheel may be the best sounding
freewheel ever (among freewheels that make a sound).

I picked this day for my June summit because the temperatures swung low
after our first hot-snap. It was low 50s to mid 60s all morning, and maybe
peeked into the 70s in the lowlands of Walnut Creek. I took BART from home
to the shadow of Mount Diablo, cutting the mileage down to ~52 miles and
4950 ft of climbing. The Romulus climbed and descended like an absolute
champ. I am extremely proud of my rack/bag/fender integration, and the
handling even with a front load was great. I was shocked at how well my
knobby 700x26 Gravel Kings rode. By looking at them it would be natural to
assume they'd stink, but they were great. After my summit I swung by Riv
HQ and got the Will stamp of approval.

Pics prove it:

Re: [RBW] DIY build or order complete?

2024-06-08 Thread Corwin Zechar
I have been paying $200 for (three) Riv Builds for more than fifteen years
now. I think $200 for a great build is an exceptional value. Could I do it
myself? Sure. But Riv doing the build saves me lots of time (and
aggravation, when I discover I need some small part, lube, tool, etc.) And
I never forget - the people at Riv all need to eat, go to the doctor, put a
roof over their heads, etc.

Keeping good organizations in business is very important.

Regards,

Corwin

[RBW] Re: Last Susie fit question (with photos!) & a second Riv Gus?!

2024-06-08 Thread Armand Kizirian
Difference in reach between the two models is only 1.5cm, you can adjust
for it with stem length without an issue in the age of 80-135mm. I wouldn't
trust any opinion on fit based on the photos you've provided, especially
since your feet are floating. :D Only you know best.

Your PBH is within range for both sizes. It all depends what kind of fit
you prefer, being "on" the bike (smaller size, more playful/nimble) or "in"
the bike (larger size, more stable and relaxed).

[RBW] Re: Last Susie fit question (with photos!) & a second Riv Gus?!

2024-06-08 Thread iamkeith

That's going to be hard to tell without riding. Based on my own experience
and preferences, I'd guess you'll want to stretch out a little more.
Either longer stem or less sweep on the bars. Completely speculation
though.

I'm a chronic cockpit tinkerer, and mess with bars and stem on at least two
of my bikes every year. I've noticed one un-scientific constant every time
I get a setup feeling close to ideal: if I draw an imaginary line between
my hands (where they grip the bar), and sight through that line while
riding, the bead from my eyes will almost exactly intersect the axis of
the front hub. I don't know what the connection is or why it always turns
out this way, but assume it has to do with weighting and stabilizing the
steering adequately. It looks to me like you would be sighting behind the
axle as currently mocked up?

Good news is that that that bike doesn't look too small. In case you were
still worried you got the wrong size.

Regarding a second: I'd never try to talk someone out of a second riv.
But keep in mind that the susie is very different from other rivendell
models.I think the lowered bb height of yours will help, compared to my
first run orange one, but bet its still quite different. My AR, Ram,
Saluki, QB and Clem - though mostly older models - all have a
characteristic Riv "feel". My Susie is completely different. I'd consider
getting a different model for variety's sake.

State Road 119 from Harbor Springs to Cross Village.

For the full "western shore" experience,.at Cross Village continue north on
North Lake Shore Drive to Sturgeon Bay Beach where the road runs between
sand dunes and the beach before finally turning east.

One small thing about playing with scammers (my 'best' one was a long
correspondence with an Airbnb-er who sent me a check to deposit and send
him back the overage)...was another guy who I got so angry, he tried to
hack my gmail account (but failed). So...be careful out there! And on a
rare day, I have a tiny bit of compassion for them, especially as I've
recently found out that many of the overseas hacker/scammers are doing it
under threats and coercion.
