[RBW] Re: Want to move bar end shifter to mounts

2024-07-02 Thread Bill Lindsay

With the information given so far, there is one big "gotcha". What clamp
diameter do you need? There are no fewer than five possibilities for what
you need, and Paul Thumbies only are made in two of those five sizes. Can
you share a photo of your bike?

The five possible sizes are:

22.2mm
23.8mm
25.4mm
26.0mm
31.8mm

Do you have albatross bars? Or drop bars? Albastache?

If you have Albatross bars, those take a 22.2mm clamp, and Paul Thumbies
can go "anywhere" along those bars. Also, many of the complete shifters
folks have recommended would also fit because they all have 22.2mm clamps.
Drop bars and Albastache will want 23.8mm clamps which is trickier. If
you want to clamp on the sleeve near the stem, you may need 25.4mm or
26.0mm, which no longer are made in Paul Thumbies (but they used to be).
31.8mm is the clamp diameter for modern drop bars on the bulge near the
stem.

Re: [RBW] Want to move bar end shifter to mounts

2024-07-02 Thread Michael Baquerizo
others mileage may vary, but i recently started using a set of microshift
thumbies on a new to me bike.

i also have shimano on another bike (as you have) and silver! on another.
all set up friction.

of the three, the microshift has felt the best.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/124833117848?epid=9024683600&itmmeta=01J1V7F30B9KENRB255JF84DAW&hash=item1d10a23698:g:X2EAAOSwk8pmO9yC&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJ4NcfUZomssn1t7VI%2Fpf%2BBKOv24CsVKs3Fj%2FzcrSCP3qzd2wrvDOpTNYN4ZDRwgW1oCvrMn7UYZ%2FNJWI2Sq8Hoe6IUuCa5s1b3mxiqab38P7ZICw30vNdRH%2FpGEKJbFfYPVfModc%2Fztu9pUge5ErDdmyqFKcAZa4e3D3cbUm%2Flyewy4IFcgSZ%2F8WjV%2Bw1M6Zit%2Bb61dPHzd1spElNNX6ubNhEPf2ZWqfNmA5xAohvxNwAd%2Fj91TZe1fM7JApHtpIHj9fac7AY5e1B2CYWtS1Q4PvTZJSnxbr88vUvZg5jH45p%7Ctkp%3ABFBMjrG8545k

at their price, it would be cheaper to just get a set of them, and retire
your shimano, or switch those to another bike (if necessary) or just parts
bin them.

not what you asked, but owning paul thumb mounts, i would rather just buy
these. they look pretty too.

[RBW] To Chris with the Betty Foy

2024-07-02 Thread Nick A.
I took a ride on a local route called the "Arlington Loop" earlier this
week, and saw three (!) Rivendells out there while on my Atlantis.

The last person I saw was at the exit of a park here in Falls Church, and
she was stopped with her Betty Foy (the first I've ever seen IRL!). She was
a very nice woman named Chris, and if she's out there, I wanted to just say
thanks for chatting about bikes on a beautiful day.

Hope everyone's doing well out there.

[RBW] Re: WTB: 54-56 Sam Hillborne (i think? my first riv!) but open to other Rivs

2024-07-02 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
Jacob,

I my size and weight correspond to yours. For ten years, I have owned both
a Homer and a Sam.
The Sam is set up for light touring (under 7 days, but mostly 2-3 day
tours). It also acts as a grocery-getter when I feel inclined.
The Homer is currently outfitted for county road riding, including
"unpavement".
Both bikes sport VO fenders with 38mm tires + - so you can easily go wider
if you wish to go without fenders. Both bikes are "pre-long chain stay"
design, but nonetheless are probably close enough to what you will buy new,
if that is your choice.
I can tell you that the Sam will suit your needs just fine. While the Homer
has a slightly more lively feel, it could possibly do light and credit card
touring, but would limit you for longer tours loaded with gear. You
obviously - like me - enjoy the esthetics of a bike, so either of these
would offer that treat too. I hope you report back here often with the same
enthusiasm you've shared above.

Almost 12 years ago, when I was very interested (at least in the
abstract) in randonneuring, I travelled to Peter Weigle’s lovely shop in
Connecticut and purchased a JPW-reimagined 650B conversion of a Raleigh
Competition. Peter has done a few of these extensive conversions over the
years, and the reviews on Flickr by their owners are incredibly
enthusiastic. My example is gorgeous — a deep maroon with gold pin
striping by Peter, and contrasting blue paint on the lugs. The details
 are
stunning. Here are a few pics of the bike in Peter’s shop and mocked up
 after the conversion:

The frameset came with installed headset, perfectly fitted fluted
fenders, Mafac brakes, JPW custom front rack and taillight, and pump. On
Flickr, Peter described the many steps in the conversion process for this
 bike this way:

*“I want these conversions to be special, and there are many things
that happen in the process. Here's a short list.First of all each frame is
inspected to make sure everything seems ok.Frame geometry is measured,
forks are re-raked to obtain the desired trail. The frame is milled and
faced, the crown race is turned down to fit standard headsets.Frame is
checked for alignment, this will be repeated as the bridges are installed,
and one more time as a final check.Bridges are cut out and new ones placed
in the proper location for 650b fender lines.Chainstays are manipulated to
increase clearance for 42 mm tires.Cantilever bosses are added and cable
hangers modified as needed.Brake cable guides are removed and are replaced
on the other side of the tube from their stock location to "sweeten" up
 the
brake cable routing. Water bottle, shift lever, pump mounts and tail light
mounts are brazed on.On this frame the forks were modified to accept a
 dyno
wire inside.A custom front rack is made, fenders are reshaped and
installed.A custom tail light needs to be fashioned, and a pump modified
 to
fit.Mafac cantilevers are cleaned up, polished and a set of Kool Stop pads
are installed. The frame is bead blasted, primed, painted, lug lined, box
striped, decals are applied, clear coats applied, baked, and then hand
rubbed.Frame Saver is applied and a headset is installed, then I have to
take the photos for all to see.**”*

Yeah, the Paul thing is just the pod to which your mount the shifter. It
doesn’t include the actual shift mechanism. I swapped the pod on my Uno
shifter and it was easy but I had to modify it a bit to make it work. I
think you’re looking for a part that you can have mounted at a bike shop.
I’m unaware of a pod other than the Paul component pod. They make great
stuff if you can stomach the price. If not, I’d go with something like this:

https://www.microshift.com/us/models/sl-t09/

Can you post a photo of your shifters?

If you have the Rivendell silver shifters, Rivendell sells a bar mount
conversion

https://www.rivbike.com/products/z558mz-cnv-oialk

Send a pic and I’ll be able to give you a better idea.

Unless they’re Dura Ace thumb shifters, it’s probably not with spending
that much to mount them to the bars versus just replacing the whole
shifter.

2024-07-02 Thread Eric Marth
Oh, this one hurts. A JPW Competition in my size. I have such a soft spot
for these and love each and every old Raleigh that Peter has rat-rodded
out. I can't swing it at the moment but dear lord oh me oh my it's
beautiful and has all the modifications one could dream of!

You better believe I already had the photos you shared from Peter's flickr
account already saved to my reference folder.

Best of luck with the sale! Someone needs to get this built up and out on
the road

I mounted Rivendell Thumbies on the stem of my Clem. Maybe not universally
appealing but it's an option. And not particularly cheap, but what is these

2024-07-02 Thread Roberta
Dross,

Thanks for the speedie reply.

8 speed? 9? Dunno. I'm not looking to replace the shifters, just move
them to a thumbie mount. Do you think they meant replacing the shifters?
This is the web page they sent me:
https://www.paulcomp.com/shop/components/drivetrain/shifting/shimanothumbies/
Would moving the shifters to a thumbie mount change their fantastic and
smooth as butta' shifting?

I'm sorta like Leah, bicycle bell ding ding... I just like to get on and
ride. I know to pump air in my tires and lube the chain. I just know I
don't like the placement of the current shifter.

[RBW] Re: WTB: 54-56 Sam Hillborne (i think? my first riv!) but open to other Rivs

2024-07-02 Thread Roberta
It's very exciting especially when the anticipation is high and the
resulting bike is even better.

Analog Cycles in VT may have some built up. I think Maine Bike Works is
also a dealer. I do believe that there is a Homer riding guy at Keystone
bikes in Philadelphia, but they aren't a Riv dealer, yet. Isn't there some
fabulous dealer in Chicago--Mack's?
https://www.rivbike.com/pages/dealers?_pos=1&_sid=1f17f0872&_ss=r

I was lucky enough to be able to try a number of models in my size when
Analog was located in MD. I've had enough to know my Riv sizing. Lastly,
perhaps a trip to HQ? You won't even need to rent a car to visit them.

I think a Sam would be an excellent choice for you based on your needs and
wants.

What speed are you running? The problem with the Paul mount is that you can
get a new shifter for less money. I have one of the blingy Uno shifters but
I also have two bikes with Microshift and it works just as well. There
isn’t too much you can do to engineer a significantly better friction
shifter which is one of the great things about friction shifters.

Also, I booked the flight and hotel in San Francisco as well as an

Also thanks Edwin for the story! Hope I enjoy the ride quality and am able
to buy used or get a good price to buy new anywhere within the year for
sure. I've also never spent that much on a bike, but I definitely want
something that'll last, look good, and feel right. This whole looking for a
new bike thing started because my family member wants my current bike lol!

Hi Anthony,
Where do you live? I'm also looking into purchasing a Rivendell in the near
future. I live in West Palm Beach FL, I ride a 1978 Raleigh Professional
road bike all around the city and beach (Ocean Drive).

If any members live near the area let me know I can also meet between the

The reason I ask is that at 86CM PBH, you are probably "between" the 54
 and 57.
If you walked into most shops, they would probably to put you on the
smaller bike for all the reasons we fear most shops.
If you showed up in Walnut Creek and anyone at the RBWHQ&L got chatting
with you, they'd likely encourage you to try the larger size.

Also, if you are going for upright bars, that might change the equation
 a bit.
If you are 5'11" with a true 86CM PBH, then you probably are a little
 longer in the upper body

You might call them in Walnut Creek and be honest about your budget
restrictions and the fact you might not be buying it right away. They fit
 folks well.
