[RBW] Re: Goathead immunity

2021-09-25 Thread A. Douglas M.
Patrick,

This year’s crop is indeed bountiful. Last week I got a tire full and made
it home only to find that tire (29x2.5 surly ET) flat the following day. I
believe my orange seal dried out.

Just two days ago I got a few goat heads in my 650b WTB resolutes. I knew
this occurred because I got a nice spray of OS all over my hand and leg. It
did seal up on its own. A few pumps of the mini pump had me back on the
road, and that tire stayed inflated as of this morning.

How often do you top off your sealant? How often do you scrape out old
boogers?

I think tubeless is a requirement in goathead country. Riding is not
enjoyable when having to fix 3+ tubes per ride.

Best,

Aaron in El Paso

[RBW] Re: Do you use a torque wrench? Or are they a

2021-09-24 Thread A. Douglas M.

REI will take anything back at virtually anytime. The biggest constraint in
my experience is your moral compass.

I’ve used the same Husky torque wrench for decades with success, but I
really only use it on automobiles. I sometimes use the Ritchey torque key
for things like stems. It’s easy and convenient, but 99% of the time I use
feel. I broke a cheap Chinese seatpost collar on a friends bike 20 years
ago. Other than that I’ve been good to go, but I don’t usually use weight
weenie parts.

Best,

Aaron

2021-07-31 Thread A. Douglas M.
Hey Doug in Athens,

I’ve carried a Pedros Trixie tool since I built up my first fixed gear
(RB2). It has a 15mm wrench, cog spanner and 5mm Allen on it and fits to
cage bosses with wing nuts. Great tool if you have axle nuts.

It is too bad about the mix up. Ultimately, I felt it would be a waste of
time/money/energy to have the seller pay to ship it back to himself only to
resell it. I hope it goes to a good home here.

Best,

Aaron

pretense that it was a 55cm. Alas, it’s a 53cm. Full geometry is on the
blug/blahg/blog, but Riv advises this is for PBHs of 79.5 to 83.

Currently set up with a Sugino crank Wolftooth/Willow 40/32 (Phil BB) and a
White Industries 16t freewheel and Surly 18t fixed cog on Velocity A23 rims
laced to formula (origin8) hubs. Low mileage Gravelking SS+ 35s.

Velo Orange 80mm stem, Nitto B115 45cm bars, newbaums, TRP levers with new
Ultegra cables and housing. Brakes are Tektro 556.

Nitto S83 seat post with a Brooks Pro. Pedals not included.

Chain has 20 miles on it.

This was my first time riding a long chainstay Riv. I’m a fan. It feels
just as nimble on the street and trail. I believe 3 of these were made in
this color and size.

Price is $2300 shipped obo. Photos at

Re: [RBW] Re: measured speed differences between road and touring bikes

2021-07-26 Thread A. Douglas M.
Aeroperf,

We’re you exerting the same effort each time? I find myself not wanting to
go fast on my albatross bikes. I think that plays a big part in it. I can
match speeds on my 29+ but it’s not as fun and it’s not the point of the
bike. So unless I was purposely trying to match speeds, I never would.

Best,

Aaron

P.s. Nice Fuji.

Re: [RBW] Re: measured speed differences between road and touring bikes

2021-07-26 Thread A. Douglas M.
Between my drop bar Bianchi Virata on 650b38 (parimotia) and my Bianchi
Volpe with albatross bars and a porteur rack and bag, the difference was
notable. The Volpe was comfortable and a blast around town. When I tried to
go on long rides with it, it seemed to fight me after 40 miles or so.

The Virata was fast and smooth and only my posterior hurt. But the drop
bars weren’t as comfortable around town. Worse visibility too.

I think the biggest difference is just position and wind resistance.

I do find it easy to go faster riding fixed gear, at least on the flats.
The only time I could ride with the weekly A group was fixed.

Best,

Aaron

Swapped the bars for 45mm Nitto B115s and a VO stem. Changed out the
colored cable housing to Ultegra gray housing. Just ordered some maroon
tape and twine from Rivendell (along with Tosco bars for my fillet brazed

I’ll get it taped up and take some better photos.

Price will be $2300 shipped.

Thanks!

[RBW] WTT 53cm Frank Jones Sr

2021-07-17 Thread A. Douglas M.
Hello all,

I recently bought a 53cm Frank Jones Sr frameset which was advertised as a
55cm. Bummer.

I can get my money back, but that is a lose lose (for me and the buyer), so
I figured I’d see if anyone here wanted to trade for this very rare
frameset (I have a whole build which could be an option).

The frame is in very good shape in the beautiful homer blue and would come
with the FSA headset. Geometry details are on the blahg or blug. But it
has an ETT OF 55 for PBHs of 79.5 - 83.

I like Rivendells, so let me know what you got off list.

Thank you!

Best,

Aaron “looking for a win win” in El Paso

[RBW] Re: Comebacks for when people think your bikes cost too much

2021-06-28 Thread A. Douglas M.

This is such an interesting topic from a sociological perspective.

The idea that we don’t want to talk about costs with others has always
confused me. My wife says it’s because people make judgments about others,
but who cares?

Ultimately, it’s a conversation about the application of subjective values.
Do Rivendells cost a lot? To me, with my income, yes. To others with
theirs, no. Do I think they’re a great bargain? Totally. Do I care if
someone thinks I spent too much? No. Unless I overpaid out of ignorance,
but that’s really my own fault.

I wouldn’t want a comeback for someone having a different opinion of value
than me. It’s one of the great things about people. We value things
differently. Even people spending the same amount on a specialized carbon
bike would think were silly for spending that much on a heavy steel bike.
And what do we think of their purchase?

Did you know some people don’t like Brussels sprouts? I can’t believe it
either.

Best,

We are both financially responsible people, don't live lavishly, and
can afford both items. However, the reactions of the friends and family

While no one has given a second thought to the price of the jewelry, the
reactions on the bike have almost universally been that of astonishment.
And these are from people who know me well, know I enjoy cycling, and that
I only have one bike right now which I am planning to sell when the new

So that got me thinking, I can't be the only one who has experienced
this. What are some other similar stories? More importantly, what do you

[RBW] Re: Ever get pulled over by police while on your bike?

2020-09-13 Thread A. Douglas M.
I never understood the point of arguing with an officer in these
situations. It only serves to prolong the incident? I also find it
interesting to see animosity towards people doing their job from what is
usually a super friendly group of people. (Cyclists and especially RBW
cyclists)

I’ve never been pulled over on my bike in spite of doing many stop sign
slow rolls. I have however set up many operations where I had a law
enforcement officer on a bike with a radio and a marked car behind them.
The officer would ride and report when vehicles passed too closely in
violation of state law. Then the vehicle would be stopped and driver
educated. Those quickly got the word out that cyclist safety was being
taken seriously along that busy stretch of highway.

2020-06-19 Thread A. Douglas M.
I love your customs, Patrick, but they are tough sales as single speed unique
geos by a low production builder.

Looking on eBay custom frames have been going for $500 (No rad racks). The only
two recent sales going for 1200 and 2000 were a Pegoretti and Vanilla
respectively.

I’m sure you could get more but I’d imagine it would take a while. I’d list it
for $1500 and start a dialogue with any potential buyers.

FWIW I always have at least one single speed in my quiver. 

[RBW] Seeking rec's for short threadless stem with rise

2020-06-07 Thread A. Douglas M.
Deacon,

The challenge with this situation is finding a “Riv” like solution. When I had
the same need as you, I was looking at a DMR Defy 50 stem. Threadless, 50mm
(available in 35mm too) and 5mm of rise. It looks good in a robot CNC machined
sort of way but not in a lugs and leather sort of way. Cost about $50 online.

Other than that I was looking at $125+ options from Paul, Crust (Nitto), or
Analog. Too rich for a stem for me.

[RBW] Re: Charlie H Gallop!

2020-06-07 Thread A. Douglas M.
I was excited about this project but seeing that frame does not make my eyes
happy. It reminds me of a cheap “compact” road frame that manufacturers make to
offer fewer sizes.

I guess that fits into the less expensive mold, but I was hoping for something
more closely akin to a tig welded AHH with longer stays. I’ve stared at this
picture a lot this morning trying to appreciate the top tube to no avail.

Maybe it will look better with a Tallux stem? Maybe it would look better with
bent seat stays? The top tube as shown would really only help stand over
clearance further midway along itself. When I dismount I stand over the segment
of TT immediately in front of the saddle. I guess I’m trying to understand the
practical advantage of the swoopy top tube.

I love Wolbis Slugstone. It reminds me of being a kid and watching the original

I also really like Frank Jones. Classic American blue collar name.

I’m a big fan of Platypus. It fits great with the current, light-hearted nature
of Rivendell. Plus, they are very cool animals. They feed their offspring milk
not through nipples but by sweating it out their belly. Impressive. “I have
nipples, Greg. Can you milk me?” A platypus wouldn’t find that line amusing at
all.

Sadly, I think Roadeo and Roadini are missed opportunities.

[RBW] Re: Aero Albatross

2019-12-03 Thread A. Douglas M.
Yeah that’s what I do, Garth (placing my forearms on the forward bend of
albas). The problem with this isn’t width for me but that it’s awkward to
control the bike with my forearms. Just a little something to grab onto would
give me control and subsequently more comfort. So I was thinking aero bars or
maybe those nubbins like Bridgestone used on their XOs.

The top tube is good for me on this bike (58cm) for me at 5’10”ish. I’m using
the steel hi rise Nitto quill stem that Riv sells to get the bars up over my
saddle height.

Thanks for your insight!

[RBW] Seeking Advice: Best Tires for Non-Ideal Rims

2019-10-17 Thread A. Douglas M.
Hello J,

Many people rode 2.4 tires on rims with 19mm internal width before wider rims
really caught on. Some people will tell you it makes it harder to lower
pressures without sidewalks folding, but that is less relevant with tubes.
You’ll probably get pinch flats before that happens.

I run Maxxis Ardent 2.4s on Magic 819s with no problem.

I say try it and see how you like it. Nothing catastrophic will happen. MTBR
has lots of good info on this, too.

[RBW] Quickbeam: favorite tires?

2018-05-19 Thread A. Douglas M.
I liked the Voyageur Hypers in 38. They’re slick, so I’d lose traction going
uphill in gravel or dirt. They have an excellent ride on flat gravel or
smoother surfaces. They were also less than $20/tire. For rougher trails I’d
like to try the gravel King’s or Steilacoom tubeless. I always end up riding
mostly paved or dirt roads, though.

[RBW] Sam Hillborne Reimagined

2018-02-26 Thread A. Douglas M.
Beautifully executed. Reimagining an old bike satisfies in a different way than
buying a new bike. They’re both fun!

[RBW] Nitto Kite bar?

2018-02-24 Thread A. Douglas M.
I don’t see the angle of sweep on blue lugs site, but they remind me of my Soma
Osprey bars which are very close to the Jones H-bar (no loop). 40 degree sweep,
12mm rise, 710mm width. Great bar for long top tubes or Bikes that are designed
to be used up right and on both asphalt and dirt. As most things, they are not
as pretty as Nitto.

[RBW] Fixed Gear and Crank Arm Length

2018-02-04 Thread A. Douglas M.
I have ridden fixed on the street and light trails where I used a 165mm
crankset (on a RB2 conversion and then on a QB). I generally ride a 172.5 road
and 175 mountain arm length. I really enjoyed the different feel the 165 gave
me. If you get the chance, I encourage you to try it just for fun. You may find
yourself sitting more.

Best,

Aaron

[RBW] Single speed handlebar recommendations

2018-01-07 Thread A. Douglas M.
I had Nitto noodles on my QB when purchased. It was ok, but Riv sizing lends
itself to upright bars IMO (long top tube)0. I put on a pair of albatross bars
and fell in love with upright fixed. Perfect for the mountainous city I lived
in. Multiple hand positions, and like others, I enjoyed the widest the most.

I put those bars on my wife’s bike and currently use a Soma Osprey bar. Really
great and really wide.

Have fun and mix them up!

Re: [RBW] V.O. fixed wheelset?

2015-04-29 Thread A. Douglas M.
I also had concerns about the VeloMine wheels. I called up and spoke with the
owner (can't remember his name), but he was extremely helpful. I asked if it
would be a problem for them to check spoke tension prior to shipping them out.
He stated that he'd be happy to do so. Something to consider!
