[RBW] Re: Homer Holden question

2019-10-07 Thread Andy C.
I have a first generation (2006) Waterford Homer (the poem era). I believe
that a characteristic of these first Homers is the lack of a kickstand
plate. I'm not sure exactly when the plate was added, but it was soon
thereafter. I hope I'm not wrong.

[RBW] Re: Call for bicycling pics – for Photo Mural

2019-02-06 Thread Andy C.
Just checking in here...

First of all, I'd like to say THANK YOU to everyone who contributed pics.
It was a great response - both in the number of pics and the variety of
images. I also really appreciate the enthusiastic comments that folks
passed along.

Secondly, the thrill of receiving images was such that I thought, "We
should make an Owner's Bunch calendar!" Just throwing that out there...

Thirdly, if anyone else wants to contribute images for the photo collage,
there's still time as we haven't broken ground on the bike room renovation
project yet (plz see original post). Cognizant that Adam has recently
started an active picture posting thread, I hope I don't contribute to jpeg
fatigue ;^)

Sweet! I see that the basket and net can barely contain your intellectual

*Oh, Andy, you might regret asking  Kids, pets, I’ve got them all! *

No regrets here, just the opposite. Thanks for sharing, Leah. Great pics.

*Approx. how many photos do you need? Seems you will have to curate them
so I'm assuming only a few per person? *

Folks can send as many as they want. I won't be able to use all of them but
it is nice to have a selection (and to see people's images). So far, I have
received some amazing pics and a wide variety. However, I encourage more
submissions as we do have a whole wall to cover.

Thanks you very much for the generous offer, Manny.
I look forward to browsing and then using some of your pictures to prove to
others that cool riding really happens! I took a quick peek just now and
saw some fantastic images.
I'll let you know...

As for contacting Rivendell, I am waiting to see what responses are
generated by my post. I'm still in the "semi-passive" phase of curatorship

2018-12-15 Thread Andy C.
*Andy - have you reached out to locals like Manny, Jenny Oh, etc?*

Thanks for the suggestions, Justin. Manny has definitely posted tons of
pics here. Hopefully, he'll see this post and respond. If not, I could try
to reply to one of his posts, but I'll wait for now. As for Jenny and
others, I'm not sure of the best way to contact. Please feel free to reply
directly to me if you have ideas or would like to help facilitate. I really
appreciate the input.

*When complete, please post the address so when out-of-towners visit San
Francisco we can stop by & check it out.*

This artwork would be in the staff bike room and I would be happy to take
any visitors back to view the mural. You would also be welcome to commute
with me from downtown out to near Ocean Beach where I live. We could even
take a long, circuitous, and scenic route.

*I assume we should "reply privately" to avoid cluttering up the forum?*

Yes, please!

[RBW] Call for bicycling pics – for Photo Mural

2018-12-15 Thread Andy C.

Great pics are always being posted by members of this group. Now I ask: who
among you would like to contribute images for a mural of bicycle photos?

I work at the Main Branch of the San Francisco Public Library and early
next year we will be renovating our staff bike parking room. In addition
to expanding the space and installing new racks, we will remodel the room
in a way that will celebrate cycling and encourage more staff to bike to
work. One feature will be a bike photo collage covering one wall. This is
where you all come in. I have seen many stunning and cool pics posted here
that would be inspiring for our commuters after the morning slog and before
the evening grind home. Who knows, maybe they’ll even take their breaks in
the bike room to look at the photos.

Types of photos wanted:

   -

Bike riding (adults, children, groups, teams, pets)
   -

   Riding in nature/the country
   -

   Riding in the city
   -

   Racing/Cyclocross
   -

   Mud, rain, snow
   -

   Riders on unusual bikes
   -

   Screwball pictures
   -

   Other (surprise me!)

Generally, I’m not looking for pictures of bicycles alone, close-ups of
builds, etc. The exception to this might be bikes in unique or gorgeous
locations or perched in front of an impressive or funny sign. I’m also not
looking for nature shots without people on bikes. Even though the mural
will be in SF, it is not limited to Bay Area pics (though these are highly
encouraged, for sure). International entries are also welcome.

I can’t offer any payment. I did ask our Exhibitions staff if I could send
a digital copy of the mural to all contributors but such a thing will not
exist. However, the images will be printed individually and the mural will
be pieced together on the wall, collage style. It may be possible to put
the photographer’s name on their image and, depending on your responses, we
can definitely consider this option. When complete, I will surely take
shots of the entire mural to share with you all.

I can’t guarantee that I’ll use all submissions because right now I don’t
know what the response will be like. However, I do encourage you to
contribute as many photos as you like. As for pixels, since each collage
image will be in the 10 x 12 or 14 x 16 inch range, lower pixel count (in
the 1000s) is doable. However, the higher the better, for sure. Please send
the best you got!

I’m trying to be sensitive to everyone’s rights and property. If there is
anything that seems inappropriate about me approaching the group this way,
or if you have any suggestions, please let me know. When submitting pics,
please reply directly to me or, if you like, steer me to your blog/Flickr
(or other) account to browse and download.

Thanks so much,

--Andy C.

Re: [RBW] Upright bars and romulus

2018-08-30 Thread Andy C.
Wow, I could have started this exact topic.
I commute on a Canti-Rom with drops and ride recreationally on other bikes
with drops and one with a Bosco. Neck pain got so bad two months ago that I
stopped commuting and I haven't started up again. I just purchased an
Albatross cockpit from a list member but I have yet to install it as I'm
still holding out for the fountain of youth to return (I'm 54). After all,
I do see riders older than I in drops all the time.
As I was ramping up my riding this spring I did lots of stretching but
never thought to stretch my neck. Now I know. Sure, I read about neck pain
on the Rivbike.com but I always thought, "That would never happen to me."

[RBW] Re: Obenauf's on shoes?

2018-01-05 Thread Andy C.
I agree that Obenauf's works great on hiking boots and the like. On my
regular shoes, however, it proved to be a little trickier. Because of the
seams on the shoes, it was difficult to wipe off all of the residue that
wasn't fully absorbed by the leather. Though the shoes didn't feel sticky,
they were soon had areas covered in a fine layer of dust and other small
particles. I did heat up the shoes a bit with a hair dryer to promote
absorption but still had the problem a few times. Never had this problem
with lighter weight treatments. I could just be doing a really bad job
and/or we might just not notice this "ankle dandruff" on our work shoes.

thank you, and thanks to Surylyprof for the PSA.
What with the holidays and all, I've only taken the bike out once, or I
should say that it took me out and led me all over SF. I discovered

to ordering a beer at a bar. The bike is awesome, if a little difficult to

Re: [RBW] Nitto Saddlebag Uplift Support Info.

We use one of these to mount a country bag on my girlfriend's 47 cm
Saluki. There' not enough room between the seat and the tire/rack for a
large bag, so that's where the uplift comes in. There is a lot of hardware
back there, what with a rack and the uplift, but it works. The uplift
comes our from the middle of the tombstone.

I have a first batch Waterford AHH, with the slightly sparkly paint.
I've been using Testors Blue #1110, straight out of the bottle. To my
eye, it works fine, if not perfect. I've never noticed the touch-ups
after painting.
Be sure to stir it up well before each application, or you can get a
different color, which happened to me.
BTW, at first I used fingernail polish on my scrapes, but I decided
that that was too macho for me.

[RBW] rusty seat tube

2008-12-22 Thread Andy C.

Hello all:
I bought a used Quickbeam a year ago; and though the outside is still
a beautiful green, I'm afraid the inside may be closer to the newer
orange color.
When I took the seat post out to re-grease and stop the squeaking, it
had a couple of rusty veins on it.
A have a few questions:
1) If I am to spray some Boshield in there, do I need to remove the
bottom bracket so everything runs out?
2) Should I ream and scrape?
3) Does it really matter, since I live in the dry Bay Area and I can
just regrease the seat tube?
4) Any other advice?
Thanks for your help in advance.
