The brakes are cantilever with salmon pads. I assume that the are properly
mounted. The squawking began after about five months of riding. In the
beginning there was no noise.

"the extra complication (bleeding) over the cable Pauls" has sent me
back to cables and calipers on 2 of my bikes. Especially if I'm in hilly
and mountainous terrain, especially especially when touring with moderate
loads (35lbs) in that terrain, disc-brake pads wear out way faster than
 ol'
fashioned brake pads. Hydraulic discs are super easy to squeeze and
modulate, and although my thumbs are already arthritic I can still stop
 just fine w'cable brakes.

[RBW] Re: Sam Build - Wish Me Luck!

2023-01-16 Thread Bill Fulford
Good luck with your build. I’m in a similar situation, but mine is a
rebuild of a 15 year old Atlantis. I already have replaced the wheels with
Atlas rims and am on my second silver crank so I’m not going new on those.
New Paul brake levers and Canti brakes have arrived along with ergon
handlebar grips. New monarch pedals, nitto stem, Rivendell shifters, and
sim works super yummy tires have been collected. Im leaning toward the
Nitto bull bar as my reinvented Atlantis is going to be an all rounder. The
final cabling and adjustment will probably be done by my lbs as I like a
well tuned bike and I don’t have enough confidence in my mechanics.
It’s been fun researching and making decisions. ~Bill

Thanks for all of your thoughtful responses. I certainly believe that Paul
brakes are excellent and worth the price. I guess that I was surprised that
the price wasn’t for a full brake set. But that is me being out of touch

save Paul brakes for my dream bike, whatever that may be. Thank you for

[RBW] Are Paul brakes worth the money?

2022-09-25 Thread Bill Fulford
I was recently gifted $500 to Rivendell. My plan was to upgrade my 2007
Atlantis with Paul brakes and levers. I placed the order only to read later
that the brakes are sold per wheel. That’s more than I wanted to spend. So
before I call Rivendell tomorrow morning to cancel I’m wondering how folks
feel about these brakes? I would be ordering the linear pull brake with
love levers. Are they worth it?

[RBW] Re: Gus or Susie, am I crazy?

2021-12-05 Thread Bill Fulford
I’ve been riding my Gus for a year now. It’s taken some time to warm up to
it, but having ridden through the fall and now into winter I am loving it.
It definitely feels heavy, but when I want a ride without windchill, a bike
that can plow through water, mud, over roots, basically thru anything Maine
offers, it is my go to bike. A peppy ride? Not how I would describe it.
Strong and stable? Yes! Fun? Absolutely! Just yesterday I rode across deep
frozen mud and felt confident, The bike hardly shifted. (I also ride 2.6
tires). Hope this helps in your decision. ~Bill

[RBW] Bikes and Recovering from shoulder surgery

2015-02-23 Thread Bill Fulford
Hey Jim. Sorry to hear of your injury. Sounds like I had the same surgery as
you will be having. I was involved in a hit and run and tore my labrum. I would
like to say it was an easy recovery, but it wasn't. I had the surgery in
November and finished pt in February. I went three times a week in the
beginning and twice at the end. I was back cycling in May. I did make
adjustments to the bike, raised the stem and rode with albatrosses. The key was
getting weight off the shoulder for the first few weeks.
My advice to you is to never miss pt. it's painful but in the end it keeps
your shoulder from freezing. Keep on top of the pain. I'm not one for using
narcotics for pain but it's necessary. I used to take one right after pt,
without it sleep is not happening. The only benefit from the whole accident was
receiving a small settlement from which I was able to buy my Atlantis. Good
luck. Bill

[RBW] Atlantis/Hilsen owners

2014-06-21 Thread Bill Fulford
I own an Atlantis and a Hunqapillar. I have them set up differently. The
Atlantis is stripped of fenders and racks and I'm using it as an all-rounder.
The Hunqapillar has racks, 700 by 50 tires. I'm using the Atlantis like , I
think a Hilsen would be used. I'm thinking of selling the Hunqapillar and
getting a Hilsen. The Atlantis is a great bike, my favorite but seems a bit
sluggish on quicker road rides. My goal is to get a quicker ride, not racing.
So, in a round about way here is my question, if I set up an Atlantis and
Hilsen with similar wheels, tires etc, am I really going to feel a difference
in quickness, speed etc. between the Atlantis and Hilsen frames?Any thoughts
would be appreciated. Bill

[RBW] Help me decide

2014-06-08 Thread Bill Fulford
I own both an Atlantis and Hunqapillar and if I had to choose I'd go with the
Atlantis. To me the Atlantis is just about the perfect bike a person could own.
You can do anything on an Atlantis. Presently I ride it fender less, rack less
and it moves quickly. I can put fenders and knobbies on her and I'm ready for
trails and gravel. For me the Hunqapillar is a bit sluggish. Definitely stout
and stable but pushing her through a headwind is quite a chore. That's my 0.02.

I agree. I ride the smart SAMs in the winter on the Hunqapillar. They are
