[RBW] Rivish Kids Bikes?

2011-01-24 Thread Brad Gantt
Hi All,

My daughter totaled her bike against a curb yesterday (she's bruised but
fine) which means we get to shop for a new bike. She will likely fit a 24
wheel or thereabouts. Most of the majors have the same MTB/Cruiser models
available but I was wondering if anyone knew of anything approaching a
versatile country bike for kids? If the Surly LHT were small enough, it
might be ideal. Any other ideas welcome as well. Thanks!

[RBW] Kickstand Trimming

Hi All,

So, I am ready to mount my KS having secured the necessary (shorter)

method, rule o' thumb, etc. for cutting the KS down to size or is it
simply trial and error. Not sure how much lean is appropriate for
stability. Forgive the novice questions but I haven't had a KS on a
bike since I was a kid. Let's just say that was a LONG time ago.

[RBW] Kickstand Mounting Advice

2010-07-24 Thread Brad Gantt
Forgive me if this is a silly question. I am finally getting around to
mounting my Pletscher KS on my Riv custom which has a handy plate for
just this purpose. Since I will not be using the top mounting plate
that came with the 'stand, I am wondering if I need to use a nut,
washer, whatever to do the job right. Lastly, to those Bunchers who
have done this already, did you use the supplied bolt as-is, hacksaw
it down, buy a shorter one? There will be a lot of unused bolt hanging
below the plate. Not sure it will make any difference. Just curious
what other folks have done. Thanks!

[RBW] Re: New Brand V Bags

2010-06-12 Thread Brad Gantt
I should have been more clear. I already have the set (seat bar) of
Brand V bags from a year ago. Never had a problem with the hook and
loop coming undone and it has quickly become my go-to bag that rarely
gets dismounted. It is a really industrial velcro with very stout
mil-spec webbing and gets grippier as it breaks-in, at least in my
experience. The redesign of the bar bag looks like a big improvement
over the older velcro version which takes a little niggling to get
right.

Bill, did you contact RIvendell about your issue with your bag? I am
pretty certain they would have worked with you on a replacement. In my
experience they stand behind their products, especially when they
don't work as advertised. A fastener that doesn't fasten would not be
up to their standards. I don't imagine it's too late...

[RBW] Re: Spring Break Fun in Santa Monica - ride report

2010-03-26 Thread Brad Gantt
I'm doing a variation of this ride tomorrow. When I used to live in
Brentwood, I did the climb up Sullivan Cyn. on a regular basis. If I
left at all early I had the place to myself even on the weekends. Wait
too long and you have the folks bombing down on their dual-sprung
rigs. No matter how often I have done that climb, it is a test every
time. It is always interesting to see what shape the trail will be in.
It varies from winding singletrack with multiple water crossings and
drops to wide-open, nearly-paved fireroad. No matter what it is always
a special ride.

Email and forum posts are a poor substitute for actual communication.
Intent, tone, etc. is often lost in translation. If I insulted
anybody, I apologize. I simply felt as though this string had
degenerated beyond the point of reason and perspective had been lost.
I make no judgement as to the importance (or not) of TCO. My comments
were directed at the nature of the discussion following Grant's
post. I will admit that I simply do not understand the sentiment that
TCO is an offense. I believe that word choice is inflammatory and
honestly insulting to the designers and builders of these bicycles. I
also admit that I cannot understand the heated reaction to Grant's
post. As always, we have options when we purchase bicycles. If a
particular builder is committing an offense by designing bicycles
the way they believe best, perhaps we should look elsewhere.

[RBW] Re: TCO in general..

2010-02-04 Thread Brad Gantt
I've read many reports over the years of people falling from their
bikes because of TCO. It hasn't happened to me, but I wouldn't want
to
tell anyone that the thing that made them fall over was purely user
error and not an attribute of bicycle design.

This I think is the crux. TCO is an aspect of bicycle design as Grant
stated. In his opinion (and the majority of builders in my
experience), TCO is the lesser evil when considering the entire
bicycle's sizing, handling, aesthetics, performance, etc. If there was
some way to achieve all the rest and not have TCO in ALL frame sizes,
ALL wheel sizes, ALL tire sizes, and ALL shoe sizes, then ALL builders
would likely pursue this course. A bicycle frame is a closed system,
at least when we are talking about a traditional diamond frame, and as
such when you tweak one thing, everything else is effected. I realize
that most folks here know this but sometimes I think it is easy to
forget just how difficult it is to design bicycles that ride as well
as Rivendells do. I am astonished how my new Riv has literally
transformed the experience of riding for me. I put myself in Grant's
hands and I'm very glad I did.

Over and out.

[RBW] Re: Help with V brakes on Sam

2010-02-04 Thread Brad Gantt
I have run v-brakes of one kind or another for a decade + on my MTBs.
As stated above, the issue is generally improved with a bit more room
between rim and pad (common on MTBs to allow for muck clearance) and
the inevitable relaxing of the cables. I generally squeeze the tops of
the brake arms (opposite from the pads) together and that gives me
enough slack to disengage the noodle.

Good luck... and post some pics.

[RBW] Re: What's in Your Saddlebag?

2010-01-27 Thread Brad Gantt

I'm astonished by how much stuff people carry on bike rides, even
 short ones.

Yes, it is more often the case that I use my kit to help somebody else
who hasn't been as diligent about maintaining their bike. My current
kit really weighs very little in the end and if I can help somebody
else avoid having to call in evac then it's worth it. Up until quite
recently, I carried the same kit you describe, right down to the
Ritchey CPR tool and it was all I really needed for road riding. Now
doing mixed terrain rides, the likelihood of something going wrong
(particularly with tires) increases a bit.

[RBW] What's in Your Saddlebag?

2010-01-26 Thread Brad Gantt
Rivendell riders, with their ample baggage, are able to carry a wide
variety of things beyond a tiny multi-tool, patch kit, levers and
tube. I am curious what others in the Bunch find indispensable,
useful, fun, etc. It would probably be useful to describe the bag,
type of riding, etc. I'll start it off but I'm pretty boring since
until a couple of weeks ago I was limited to a tiny underseat bag.

Bag: Brand V Seat Bag

Type of Riding: Fair weather day trips up to 6 hours on mixed terrain.

Contents:
Inside Burrito Wrap- Quick Stick tire lever, 2 tubes, patch kit, tire
boot (made from old road tire with bead cut off), chain tool, spoke
wrench assorted hex wrenches, $20 bill $1 bill (also works as a
tire boot in a pinch), small shop rag (wrapped around pointy tools)

Outside Burrito Wrap- 4,5,6 Allen Y wrench (still doing small fit
tweaks given the newness of my bike), Lezyne Pressure Drive Mini-Pump,
Olympus Stylus Tough, iPhone, Food (bananas, homemade bars, etc.)

[RBW] Pre-Rivendell Ride Pics

2010-01-23 Thread Brad Gantt
I just got around to uploading a series of shots from one of my
favorite rides in the Topanga/Santa Monica Mtns. area. The ride
culminates in a great climb up Stunt Road. Which, if you hit it early
enough, you don't have to share with very many cars at all. It is
quite scenic if you can take a moment to look around. Many times, the
marine layer clings to the hilltops and sets a great atmosphere. It's
easy to imagine you are somewhere far away. Once you are at the saddle
there are several options to extend the ride well into the 50-60 mile
range with a LOT more climbing.

I can't wait to do this ride on my Rivendell and bring a nice Thermos
of coffee and some homemade muffins to eat at the top.

[RBW] Re: why no need to feel self-conscious on a rivendell

2010-01-18 Thread Brad Gantt
I have a story similar to Grant's that always makes me smile. Prior to
getting my first Riv., most of my road riding was done on a Ritchey
Road Logic w/Roll-y Poll-ys, Brooks, Nitto bar H2O cages, Grip Kings
and a Baggins Banana Bag. Not a Riv but very Rivved-out. Anyway, I was
riding with a friend on his lovely steel I.F. in the hills above
Malibu. The penultimate climb on this day was up Stunt Road. No matter
my level of fitness, it is always a tough climb. My friend and I were
about 3/4 of the way up when we were passed by a group/team all in
matching kits on carbon bikes, etc. They were not going much faster
than we were and in fact, once they passed we easily stayed right off
the last riders wheel.

Once we crested the climb and took a breather, a couple of the guys
were having a look at our antique bikes (their words). They
wistfully recalled when they used to ride steel but left it behind
when they got serious. Apparently it was lost on them that we rode
the same hill at the same pace as they did on our antiques. Now, I'm
not out to set any land speed records but the perception that I am
being held back by my choice to ride a more versatile bicycle is
simply based on ignorance and the belief of media hype.

Yesterday, during my second ride on my fancy new Riv custom, nearly
the exact thing happened. I was passed by a team on a climb and easily
hung with them 'til the top. There was one notable exception. Despite
being on a much fancier bicycle, nobody said a word. It was as though
I was invisible.

Ride it and enjoy it!

Patrick,

700 actually. I followed Grant's recommendation on the brakes after
speccing the clearances that I was looking for. Sport Touring rig
about sums it up, yes. I will most likely ride it sans racks for
longer mixed terrain rides around Los Angeles. There are quite a few I
have had my eye on for several years. From my house I can ride nice
roads and fire roads all the way to the coast. I believe XO-1 took a
group on many of those roads/trails last year on an epic. I'd love to
throw some fat knobbies on a have a go at a good chunk of the MTB
trails I have ridden hundreds of times. Should get some interesting
looks, I'm sure.

sweet!  i assume clearance for 42s and long reach sidepulls was spec'd
for 650b, or no?  and no mid-fork braze-ons, so a dedicated rear-
loader (or no-loader) - kind of a sport touring rig with very generous
 clearances?   looks fun!

As an aside I purchased a Laken 1 liter water bottle from REI as a
closeout item some time back.  It happens that the squarish design
perfectly fits a Randonneur Ref. 218 water bottle cage made by T.A.

of these cages).  I've been quite happy with the bottle, it's well
made and has a handy flip-top cover that protects the spout.

I also see that REI is currently offering the 750 ml Laken water

[RBW] Re: Who's in the queue for a custom Rivendell?

2009-10-26 Thread Brad Gantt

I chose a specific builder because I wanted their ideas, aesthetics,
etc. applied to a bike designed for my size, weight and riding style.
These ideas and practices (craft, material, weld-style, etc) are what
truly distinguish builders from one another. If you have very strong
ideas (that you're not willing to compromise) about exactly which
tubeset you want, fork rake, trail, geometry, etc. then what are you
coming to the builder for exactly? I'm not suggesting that is anybody
here but I have heard such discussions on other forums and it has
always perplexed me. It's like they want a builder to put their name
on a bike that they didn't actually design. I think Grant's honesty
and refusal to compromise, even if it means he might lose a sale, is
actually refreshing. Fortunately there are a lot of choices when it
comes to custom builders and most anybody can find what they're
looking for. I can't wait to ride the Rivendell Grant designed for me.

Interesting perspective Seth but what you describe seems to devalue
the role of the craftsperson/builder in the process. Does your boycott
of logos and names include headbadges? Craftspeople throughout time
have marked their work in one way or another. Personally, I know there
are plenty of folks who will build you a bike without decals and logos
of any kind but this is a tough business and I don't mind spreading
the word as long as it's tastefully done. This is a matter of personal
preference of course. Again, if you simply want a builder to build a
bike of your design then you're probably not going to buy a Rivendell.

Now we're splitting hairs. On a Trek, I think you have a point. On a

derivative of artisan, trade and craftsperson symbols (trade marks?)
which could be found on everything from armor to vases to oil
