[RBW] How to crash by yourself
I had an off-road excursion into the ditch Friday night and spent a few hours in the ER getting my neck checked out. All ok, but will be sore for a week or two. Bike left in the ditch was taken before I was able to return - thank goodness it wasn't my Homer or Hunqa. Small price to pay for a bit of bad judgement. Wrote it up in my blog below, but to save a click: I had my first real accident of any consequence last night on my commute home. I was heading to our cabin for the weekend. It started with a short ride to the Sounder Train heading north to Mukilteo. From there, a quick ferry crossing to the island set me on my way. The climb up the hill from the landing was great, and when the land leveled out, I found myself speeding along the fast route home – Hwy 525. I was going to take the route all the way to Freeland, but decided to take the more hilly passage over Lancaster Rd, as I was trying to get away from the sporadic traffic, and it offers a nearly car-free alternative. It also offers a nice climb with a great descent to Mutiny Bay Rd very near my destination. The last part is a nice ride along the coastline. The climb was good, but the descent was better! I love that hill – there is a second climb up to a false summit on the west side, so I tucked and hit max speed. On the other side of the second summit, there is another nice drop, and I recalled it turning right near the bottom. It had started a light sprinkle, but the roads weren’t wet yet. The bigger problem was that I was outpacing the throw of my light. As I neared the bend, I started to brake, but the wheels slid, so I let off and started pumping the levers. I quickly realized I was going too fast to make the corner, so I started picking my line while trying more brakes. As I went off the road still going about 20mph per my cyclemeter app, my bike and I pitched into a dense blackberry thicket, with me going in head first over the bike. [image: Crash site] <https://www.flickr.com/photos/stonehog/30945519235/in/datetaken/> That hole is where I crawled out I remember a fast deceleration and my head tucking under my body. I heard and felt a loud spine crunching sound as I came to rest in a panic. I immediately thought I had damaged my neck or spine somehow – no head trauma, but my limbs were still there, and I could move. I fished the phone out of my pocket as well as I could – I was quite entangled in the vines. I called my wife and told her the bad news and asked for a pickup, giving her the rough directions to where I was. After hanging up, I started trying to get up, but it took several minutes of untangling myself from the bike and the vines. I remember looking out of what seemed like a briar tunnel. I was able to get up, but my neck was very sore, and I was worried about spine damage, so I just stood there. After a minute or two, Jan called me, and I saw her car lights. She got me in the car, and tried to hide my bike in the ditch, and we made our way to the ER for 4 hrs of waiting, x-rays, and worry. [image: If you crash at 30mph, brambles are a good airbag.] <https://www.flickr.com/photos/stonehog/30824180982/in/datetaken/> Neck brace gone, and blood cleaned up – will have some killer scars… Long story short, I was just fine. No broken bones, and a couple tylenol for the road. Unfortunately, when we returned for the bike, it was gone. Lessons (re)learned: 1. Slow down when you know a bend is coming – don’t wait until you can see it. 2. Don’t rely on your lights to help – especially when they are not projecting far enough based on your speed. 3. Don’t bomb a hill at night even when you have been down it several times before with no incident – if the conditions are not perfect – no sense in the extra danger – could have been a car or a deer in the way. 4. Don’t leave a perfectly good bike in the ditch for more than a few minutes… 5. Don’t let it stop you from what you enjoy – went out for a short ride today. Still feels great to be on a bike! P.S. if you see a white Velo Routier (Cycles Toussaint) on Whidbey Island, please drop me a line… Link to Bike Index <https://bikeindex.org/bikes/103716> Brian Hanson Seattle, WA Bike Blog <http://www.stonehog.com> @stonehog stonehogboɥǝuoʇs -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Whidbey S24O Ride Report
This with pics at http://www.stonehog.com/: Not much action on the camping front this year, so I grabbed a chance to do a quick overnight (S24O <https://www.rivbike.com/kb_results.asp?ID=36>) from my place in Freeland, WA up to Fort Ebey. It's about 30 miles one way, and a great chance to try: 1. Hunqapillar on singletrack 2. New road exploring 3. Hammock camping This also echoes the distance of a Lake Crescent trail <http://www.bikepacking.com/routes/olympic-adventure-route/> I want to do later this year. That gig is mostly singletrack, but I would use the same equipment. I got underway around 4:45pm on Monday. I figured it would take 2-3 hours, so I would likely have light to set up camp. John and I had explored Fort Ebey's mtb trails <http://stonehog.com/2016/08/25/fort-ebey-mtb/> a few days earlier, so I knew where the hike/bike campsites were. I packed light. There was a burn ban, so I didn't bother bringing a stove. Just 2 water bottles, a toaster pastry for breakfast, and a can of salmon for dinner. Easy. I wore the clothes on my back and brought along a pair of wool long underwear for sleeping. No rain in the forecast. Other than that, just my hammock, fly, sleeping bag and roll. Oh yeah - I strapped some sandals on, in case the feet got sore, but that was just unused extra weight. I think the whole thing weighed in under 10 pounds (not that it matters). The way up was stunning and uneventful. Heading north, I passed South Whidbey State Park, and Greenbank Farm. The stretch from Greenbank up to Coupville had some great hills and views, and the Navy Growlers were out practicing on the outlying field near Admirals Cove. The long stretch across Keystone to Fort Casey yielded a few seals and many sea birds, but I saw not much traffic on a Monday night. I searched through Fort Casey for a back route, and thought I had it following a gravel trail by the lighthouse, but it ended in a private road. I left it to chance, and wasted a few minutes, but it was worth the views. Hill road down to Ebey Beach is amazing - no shoulder, but equally no cars. After a short hop up to the bluff, and across an amazing open farming area, it was a quick ride to the new pavement of Madrona Way past the mussel farms in Penn Cove. At this point, I was starting to worry about sunlight - it had taken me about 2 1/2 hrs to get this far. I hurried on into Fort Ebey State Park, and set up the hammock. There was one other person in the hike/bike spot - a Pacific Northwest Trail <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_Northwest_Trail> through hiker. After a dinner of canned salmon on the bluff overlooking the Straight of Juan de Fuca, and a great sunset, it was off to bed. The next morning was sunny, so I geared up and chatted with the hiker to learn about his journey <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_Northwest_Trail>. He was a 65 years old Granite Falls, WA resident, and 7 weeks into the trail that started in Glacier National Park. After 8 bears (one grizzly at about 10 yds), a pack of wolves, and countless coyotes, he was just heading to the ferry to Port Townsend to have a lunch reunion with his wife before finishing the last 150 miles to Cape Alava. [image: stonehog-17.jpg] <https://www.flickr.com/photos/stonehog/28939445660/in/album-72157669792332024/>Ready for the trip home <https://www.flickr.com/photos/stonehog/28939445660/in/album-72157669792332024/> After a nourishing breakfast at the same scenic overlook on the bluff and a water bottle refill, I was off to ride the Kettles trail on the loaded Hunq. [image: stonehog-18.jpg]MTB Riv Style <https://www.flickr.com/photos/stonehog/28939447130/in/album-72157669792332024/> Needless to say, the Hunq made short work of the trail, and I found myself heading back south and past the barley fields to Ebey Beach. [image: stonehog-24.jpg] <https://www.flickr.com/photos/stonehog/29193383836/in/album-72157669792332024/> I stopped at the old "Ferry Building" on the bluff to explore and take some pics, then it was back down to Keystone, Greenbank, and finally back to Freeland for some rest and a meal. Jim Warren was visiting Seattle recently, and we hooked up for a beer tour of the city, as he was looking to get a bike's eye view of the Emerald City. [RBW] Oregon Outback
I just finished the Oregon Outback on my 54cm Hunqapillar. I used a hodgepodge of bags (Riv Med SaddleSack, Swift Paloma, and Orlieb) to carry the often times large loads. After 360 miles of rain, mud, dust, and lots of gravel roads, I am happy to report no mechanicals. The Hunqapillar was rock solid. There were 40+mph downhills with 30mph wind gusts, and I never felt under biked. Kudos to the 2.1 Thunder Burts. I had an almost flat the first day, but a little air and spin, and the Stan's sealant did its work. No problem for the next 300 miles. I will get a better write up with pics in the next few days. No other Rivs sighted, but I heard there was an Atlantis on the ride. P.S. Thumbs up for fenders. Mine was the only fendered bike I saw, and they kept my water bottles usable. [RBW] YAHR
New wrap on the Hunqapillar - finally decided the Noodles are dialed in. Yes - it's a harlequin wrap - just can't get enough. The gray tape went a bit brown with the amber shellac, so not perfect color matching, but I figure it will fade to gray eventually. BTW - riding tubeless Thunder Burts on this beast is amazing! [RBW] Brake Cable Hanger - Fork Crown Mount
http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/ca15089.htm Is anyone using this bad-boy with a rack also mounted at the fork crown? I've been using v-brakes on my Hunqa, but the cable is right at the rack mount level, so, although it works, it's sub-optimal as it goes up and over the rack, so it has a bit of extra play. I'd also like to be rid of the problem solver (road levers). I want to put CX-70 cantis on the front, but had a bad experience with Tektro cantis on this bike's first build - bad shudder. I believe the fork crown mount is the answer... It would have to allow a rack to through mount, 'cauz I'm not giving up the awesome rack on this. https://flic.kr/p/gJdUVX - shows the current situation with v-brakes. [RBW] Tubeless Rims for Oregon Outback
I have a set of Schwalbe Thunder Burts on the way for my Hunqapillar. The plan is to use them on some bikepacking overnights to get ready for the Oregon Outback. I just realized that I let me Synergy rims get a bit worn via too much braking, not enough pad changing. I now have my overworn pads on my bench to remind me to *check my brake pads regularly*. Since I also have some spoke cracking on the OC rim, I figure it's time to get some new rims for the summer. The Pacenti SL23s seem like a good tubeless rim to try - or perhaps the Velocity A23s. Any other recommended rims that are: 1. usable in a tubeless setup 2. not overly heavy - I weigh 160lbs 3. perhaps a bit wider Brian Hanson Seattle, WA Bike Blog http://www.stonehog.com -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] FT - Looking for Noodles and SA saddle
I have a few items that I would put forth as a trade offer (local would be best - Seattle, WA). I'm interested in Nitto Noodles in good shape: 42cm, 44cm, 46cm. Would also take Gran Bois Maes Parallel bars. I'm also interested in a Selle Anatomica saddle. Ideally it would still have life left in it. Don't care too much about color as long as it's red, burgundy, natural, brown, or black :) Would also love another set of Speedplay Frogs... I have the following to offer in trade: Brooks B17 Special - Green (good - broken in) - I penciled in the imperial cut for a project that hasn't happened yet - can be erased Brooks B17 Blue - (very good) MKS Urban Step-in pedals (like new) - platform/Time ATAC dual purpose Shimano A530 SPD pedals (very good) - platform/SPD dual purpose Nitto Moustache Bar - 26.0 - original (very good) - some bar tape residue, but less than 100 miles on it On-One Midge dirt drops (very good) - includes Nitto Periscopa stem, Dia-compe levers, and awesome harlequin wrap on tops VO Tourist bar (very good) Nitto flat bar on Nitto quill stem (good but worn) - from Miyata Ridge-Runner '88 - cool bar and stem - shows age and wear, but solid GranBois Cypres 700x30mm (New in package) Most of this is pictured here: https://flic.kr/s/aHsk4rzznt If you don't have a trade, make me an offer. [RBW] Pre-Thanksgiving Ride Report
https://flic.kr/s/aHsk6tEeNj One for the folks that do longer rides. I've been wanting to do this one for a while now. A scenic ride around Whidbey Island. This was pretty tough as the last rando ride I did was May, and there is a lot of climbing that I tried to ignore while planning it. Anyhow, started a half hour late and did the solo thing around a beautiful place in the Puget Sound, and had probably the best weather of the week (mid-fifties). Great way to spend a day in the saddle. At one point I saw 20 (counted 'em) herons take off at once - pretty awesome sight! I rode the Homer, and it was flawless and comfy as usual. [RBW] Hilsen Overhaul
I am finishing up an overhaul on my '09 AHH. I've changed out a few things - replaced my Jack Brown Greens (measured 34.5mm when I pulled 'em) with Compass Stampede Pass rubber (measuring around 31.5mm). Edelux 2 to improve lighting from the original 1. On a lark, I put the old Mark's rack with the Plat rack extension on the back of the bike. I've come to realize that I don't like putting the weight up front on this guy due to wheel flop, but I still want to occasionally camp with this bike - a good platform is key. I also changed out most of the drivetrain: 1. dropped the 44T for a 42T to hopefully reduce the chance of breaking another front derailleur 2. went back to indexed 9-speed downtube shifters and rear 9-speed cassette - also retrying the Wipperman chain In an effort to reduce the (albeit light) occasional shimmy, I put a Miche needle bearing headset on. Initial test rides show are nice and snappy!!, but I have some work to do on the derailleur adjustments (rear) and will have to put the 105 front derailleur back on (tried an older Sachs) due to clearance on the tight Compass cranks. One more day and it'll be just right. [RBW] I love 42s
I have lately been coming to the conclusion that I want to standardize on a wheel tire combo that sadly doesn't work with my 59cm 700c Homer. I have been riding Hetre ELs all summer on my rando bike (Toussaint) that is a near sizing copy of my Homer, but is low trail and 650b. Now both bikes are nice, but the Homer is lighter, prettier, and my first love. On my ride home tonight on the 33s, however, I really felt the difference in comfort compared to the plush 42s. I've also been riding the Hetres tubeless (PL23 rims) and love the flat protection and even lower pressures that feel right with these wheels (25 front, 35 rear). Ideally, I would just do a 650b conversion on Homer, and life would be grand. That or find someone who wants 700c willing to trade a 58-60 Homer/Saluki for my copper beaut? That seems a bit far-fetched, however. I found an old thread on large 650b Homers, but didn't see any info on conversions. I would have to give up the Paul brakes and go with longer reach Silvers, but that's not really a problem for me. Has anyone else had this revelation? What was the result? BTW - pics of the two bikes - the side shots shows the similar crank height against the door: https://flic.kr/s/aHsjYpKpfL Brian Hanson Seattle, WA Bike Blog http://www.stonehog.com -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Front Derailleur Fails
In 30+ years of riding, I've never had problems with front derailleurs. Now in the last year, I've had 2 break on me during normal riding. The first was a Shimano CX70 on a brevet last summer. I had some problems with the cage bending out due to chainsuck on that guy, so I wasn't too surprised. The other day on my commute home, I popped the cage on a Campy Centaur triple. It was a similar break at the top of the cage with a clean edge break. It doesn't feel like I'm hard on the shifting, but something must be up. Both breaks have been on my AHH with a Rene Herse 44x28 crankset. I adjust the derailleurs to be close to the top of the big ring with 1-2mm spacing as spec'd. No problem with another CX70 on my Hunqapillar and XD600 48x34 double. Similar mileage, and if anything, more abuse. Here are some pics: https://www.flickr.com/photos/stonehog/sets/72157646102516140/ Any suggestions? Do they just not make 'em like they used to? It took me a while to process the trip, and how much fun it was. Super relaxing time away with like-minded amazing folks! This group is really a great find! Special call-outs to the Portland and So-cal crew who shared the ride with me down to the Bay Area! It made the 20-hrs of driving really fly by. I hope Ryan had a good ride back to Michigan, as well! [RBW] Barlow Pass and Hilsen
For those of you contemplating these bigger tires as a “hetre-like” solution for your road-oriented Hilsen (especially if you need/want fenders), beware toe overlap. I have been riding on these guys for a few months now, and like them (light, grippy), but I’m now contemplating putting the Stampede Pass or Cypres tires and the old Honjos back on. I guess it just isn’t Hetre cush enough to make me comfy with getting used to the overlap… https://flic.kr/p/n3QmtV Here’s a short write up: http://stonehog.com/2014/05/13/barlow-pass/ Brian Hanson Seattle, WA -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Wet 300k
Going with the fenders post, yesterday's ride in Seattle was a great testament to having coverage. It rained (hard) for at least half the ride. For me that was about 8 hours worth. Not the most fun I've ever had, but strangely satisfying in that a bad day outdoors on a bike is better than a good day inside. I certainly feel alive! I wasn't riding my Hilsen, but I will likely take that out next time. I'm waiting for a front Swift bag for the snacks and map. I was on a steel bike (Toussaint) experimenting with low trail and 650B (Hetres EL). The riv-related anecdote I'll bring up is how amazingly comfortable the Noodles are with a single cotton wrap layer. Even with non-cycling waterproof (not) gloves. It must be the diamond wrap! [RBW] The Search Continues
I think there is a tire that is both supple, light, and flat resistant. Just hasn’t been invented or engineered yet, but it’s coming. I also think the Amazon hover-delivery is going to be “normal” someday - whether to deliver emergency medical supplies, or a needed bike part at midnight. I can’t wait. I also can’t wait for the perfect light, flexible, perfect trail for rear-bag and front basket and frame bag frame that has beautiful lugs, paint, name, font, feel bike for my commute, rando rides, and off road meanders. I’m guessing it will be a Riv or variant. Can’t freakin’ wait! For now, I’ll continue to enjoy my Gran Bois, Clement, Schwalbe, Jack Browns, occasional flats, and my waterfront rides on my Hunqa/Hilsen/Miyata. I put hammered Honjos on the old Miyata, as well as a nice light up front. The 45mm fenders clear the Compass 42mm 26 tires - amazingly. The Lumos has a nice side throw, but I haven't had a chance to really tell if it's a big improvement over the Cyo IQ or Edelux. [RBW] Hunqa with Albastaches
Per a couple of recent threads on Albastaches and too-fat tires, I've recently trimmed down the Hunqapillar for the winter commute. I removed the rear rack and set up the Toplight Line Plus light on a homemade temporary bracket until I find a more elegant solution, but I really like this bike with no rear rack. I also removed the large Wald front basket and I'm just strapping down a ShopSack for the commute. It felt so right on my commute test run on Friday that I felt like I hit the jackpot of fit! The 40mm MSO tires and the Albastaches make this bike steer (no shimmy) like it's on rails, plus the lighter, suppler tires help it roll as fast as my Hilsen on Cypres tires. Best combination I've ridden so far. The front V-Brake also helps (no shudder) stop it like it's hot. I had been riding Albatross bars for the past few months, but I haven't been able to get comfortable with the rise at the front bends that roll my hands inward in an awkward way. I really use the front bend position, and the Albastaches have it right - it feels way more natural for my wrists when I'm in the bends. The added width from the original moustache bars helps, too. This set up is a keeper... Pics: http://flic.kr/s/aHsjJ3T1D1 Brian Hanson Seattle, WA -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Furious Freds, anyone? Racing Ralphs?
This reminds me of when I made snow tires with machine screws through the knobs on my old mtb tires. Wouldn't it be really great if folks just demanded large supple smooth road tires so we don't have to go to these extremes? Oh wait - the Compass 26 2.0s are exactly that. I was thinking of trying *drop bars* on the Hunqapillar. However, when I ride with my wife, she prefers a more leisurely ride, and this is where the moustache bars I found a bit less comfortable because I just really want to go faster. So, I was thinking of a more *MTB style or Nitto Bullmoose bar* to be a bit more upright. If I take the bike on rougher trails, I would think something like *Nitto Bullmoose* bars (more MTB style) would be best. I hadn't really consider the *Nitto Albatross *bars - how long are they for longer distances and rougher trails? I have noticed that a lot of Hunqapillar riders use the Albatross bars, and it has gotten a lot of good reviews. And Rivendell even features a rider on mountain trails using what looks like an Albatross bar on one of its videos! Re: [RBW] Re: Long can be good, too
I put the SAA on as I had done a 200k earlier this year with no ill-effect. I have the Pearl on another bike, and at this point think it would be fine for the long ride, but didn't want to move it. The SAA is awesome out of the box with the only downside that it stretches - I've tightened this one a couple times already, and it's even the Titanico X model built for clydesdales (I weigh in at 160lbs). I think these saddles are a bit like good tires - they have a limited lifespan. It may stop stretching, and I'll be good with it for the next 10 yrs - hard to say. Re: [RBW] Roll On, Columbia, Roll On: PDX-Astoria-Centralia
Nice ride, Shawn! That area is on my list. Brian Hanson Seattle, WA On Aug 4, 2013, at 1:22 PM, shawn m. smula...@gmail.com wrote: Just returned last night from a whirlwind four-day bike adventure around the Columbia River. I was an epic ride that I hope I never have to do the same way again! I'll be brief. I took the train from Seattle to Vancouver, WA and met my friend Brad and we rode into and around Portland for the day. Between Portland's abundant bike infrastructure and flat terrain (by Seattle standards, anyway) we wracked up an easy 49 miles just noodling around, crossing giant bridges, finding felafel and coffee, and checking out his favorite bike shops. Weather was glorious, mid-70s, and it was as fine a Wednesday as I can recall having. After camping out in the yard, I awoke before dawn feeling like I'd bitten off more than I could chew but would chew anyway. Crossed the Willamette to Highway 30, took a left onto the the Scappoose-Vernonia Highway at Scappoose and climbed into the mountains. I made pretty good time for fairly loaded touring, traffic was light and the scenery lovely. I stopped and made coffee and couldn't find my camera and decided I must have left it at home, beside my toothbrush perhaps, as it was also missing. I rode some more. The terrain was mostly gently rolling hills, and apart from a decent climb at the start and a healthy climb at the end, there wasn't much to get too worked up over. The route feels remote, but there are some services at very widely spaced intervals. A few miles short of Astoria, as daylight was fading, I wandered into the Clatsop State Forest and pitched my tent and collapsed. I was so tired that dinner was water and a can of sardines, a couple cookies and lights out. It wasn't until the next, very wet, morning that I realized I had bagged my first ever 'century': 102 miles! Early the next morning I rolled down the hill into Astoria proper, and treated myself to coffee and french toast while I worked up the nerve to take on the Astoria Bridge. As intimidating as it sounded in my planning, it was nothing compared to seeing it in real life. As I approached the bridge, I was wondering how I might rework my itinerary to avoid it all together. It was raining in that classic heavy misting way that I've only seen on the northwest coast, visibility was a couple hundred yards, and the only person wearing more reflective gear than me was the flagger who told me to stop. She smiled at me at said I can't believe you're doing this by choice... What choice, I replied. I can hardly swim across. We had a nice, brief conversation in the rain. She mumbled something about a bicycle into her microphone and then said Okay, go ahead. I was only able to get you a 2 minute headstart. That was very nice of her, I thought, and having a few minutes to get used to it without traffic made a huge difference. I survived the bridge crossing, obviously, but it was the longest 21, 473 feet ever, and I don't ever want to do it again. The next five hours were the same heavy misting rain, and I didn't have a stitch of raingear; the old adage '20% chance of rain will still get you 100% wet' held true. I won't be gambling man that way again. It wasn't cold though, so I just kind of got used to it. It cleared up around mid-day and I stopped to dry out and have lunch at Bruceport county park, where I found my camera but not my toothbrush. I made it to Raymond, WA completely knackered after 66 miles, and I’d had my fill of logging trucks. There’s nowhere to camp really anywhere near Raymond, and the forest is all private tree farm, so I wasn’t comfortable with stealth camping in it. I bailed on 101 North with its guarantee of more logging trucks and their infatuation with the fog line, and took Highway 6 toward Rainbow Falls State Park. It was a fine quiet logging truck-free route, but the longest 35 miles I’ve ever ridden, even though it’s the easiest route over the coast range. I arrived at Rainbow Falls pursued by an angry Boxer trying to tear off my starboard pannier, never happier to see a campgound in my whole life. My second century in as many days, but I felt okay after a hot meal and a beer. I slept late broke camp and rode the 27 miles to the train station in Chehalis with what felt like somebody else’s legs. It was a genuine adventure, in that there were occasions where I desperately wanted to be somewhere else. And while it was fun, I don’t ever want to do another trip like it. I like touring places where I can stop and look around once in a while, see other people. Sixty miles a day, sure; a hundred? Hell no! After I left Portland, I didn’t see another bike on the road. Ever. Beautiful country down there, even in the rain. My Hunqapillar was a total champ and the most comfortable bike ever. I’d have never made a hundred miles without it, let alone
[RBW] Long can be good, too
I just finished a great 300k in Whatcom county (furthermost north/west part of WA state), and my ride goal for 2013. It was my longest ride, and my first 300k. The first 60 miles led to a 5000' climb to Artist's Point flic.kr/s/aHsjA7EhD5 nestled between Mt. Baker and Mt. Shuksan. It was brutal but beautiful climbing up to the clouds and snow! From there, we headed back down on an amazing (and fast) descent the way we came up. I stopped to take some pics I missed on the way up, filled up on coconut water, and then headed north through blueberry and raspberry fields to the Canadian border, and West to Peace Arch Park at the border crossing and the Pacific Ocean. After a nice jaunt along the coast, we headed back home. I suffered on the last 100k with a left knee that wasn't cooperating, and a front derailer that broke after the Baker climb, but I mustered that last 50 miles and enjoyed the feeling of pulling in after a full day of awesome scenery in perfect weather! Re: [RBW] Cycling is inherently conservative.
Love the link - thanks, Patrick. As one who just visited London, it is interesting to hear that they feel that the car culture is hitting them squarely. I used the tube, bus, and feet to get around, but I noticed a LOT more medium to large cars than I remember from my last trip 12 yrs ago. That said, I was more used to cars back before I had gotten out of the habit of driving. As for the idea that drivers are surprised that other forms of transport can get you there faster, I see that every day in Seattle on my commute. I regularly ride past long lines of cars stuck in traffic full of frustrated drivers. My bike commute, when averaged out over the changing traffic patterns, is the same as driving a car. I am also refreshed at work. So worth it. Sad state of affairs - everyone has been sold into thinking they need cars for their day-to-day errands. Brian Seattle, WA Brian Hanson Seattle, WA On Sat, Jul 27, 2013 at 12:56 PM, Patrick Moore bertin...@gmail.com wrote: I should have added that I posted that link simply because it is interesting to me to see what spectrum of opinion cycling embraces in fact, although most dedicated cyclists seem to be liberal, and not because I wanted to push any ideological agenda; I despise ideologies, right or left (if these words even have any meaning, as Tim notes). Positions, social or otherwise, can be articulated and defended -- or not -- on their own merits. For the record, I find much to agree with in Hitchen's screeds, but hardly define myself by his rants. On Sat, Jul 27, 2013 at 1:30 PM, Tim McNamara tim...@bitstream.netwrote: Unfortunately the words that get co-opted (or perhaps corrupted would be more apropos) by politicians come to mean everything and nothing, depending on the expediency of the moment. Riding a bike is liberal in the terms that Deacon Patrick used- it is liberating and indeed played a major role in expanding the rights of women in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Riding a bike is conservative compared to driving a motor vehicle, taking far less resources to manufacture and to operate. Patrick Moore's comment of cycling's conservativeness in rejecting unneeded and ultimately harmful innovation is sadly not one I can agree with. The history of the development of the bicycle is littered with such innovations. Carbon fiber reinforced plastics are only the latest expression of innovation that has caused much harm from injuries when steerer tubes, fork blades and frames have snapped under normal and/or readily foreseeable less-than-normal situations. Drillium is another harmful innovation that comes into and falls out of fashion periodically. CNC milled parts such as stems and cranks which had an unacceptably high failure rate would be yet another; some of those are still with us today because the people manufacturing those products too often fail to understand metallurgy and metal fabrication adequately. Rivendell and people like Jobst Brandt might be considered conservative by Patrick's description, but mainstream cycling is not- instead they chase new marketable pseudo-advancements in order to keep selling new bikes to a small subset of the population. Locally (Twin Cities) I see a lot of people riding nice quality steel bikes from the 70s and 80s, dressed like unracers and looking like they are going to/from work and running errands. I am cheered up by this every time. Most of these are younger folks in their 20s or maybe early 30s, although I also see an increase in teenaged and pre-teenaged cyclers as well. This cheers me up even more. I see groups of nice young people meeting up to go out for the evening by bike. I see bikes locked up all over the downtown areas and other business areas in town. While us older folks are grumbling and and forming committees and pushing for bike lanes and trails as if this was a prerequisite for people to feel safe to ride, younger folks seem to be just skipping all that and getting on their bikes to get where they are going. Instead of waiting for us to fix the world to make it cycleable, they've gotten ahead of us by just doing it. Something else I have noticed… I get a lot less hassle from drivers than I got just five years ago. They are used to seeing bikes on the roads, it seems. I had spinal neurosurgery in June and this was the first big ride since, and given that recovery had compromised some of my fitness there was some concern that all those hill might very well wear me out. And they mostly did, too, but I made it. The bike was very comfortable and stable climbing, and with a couple of exceptions I was able to stay in the middle ring. I was carrying approximately 10 lbs. in the front basket and that load up high made for a noticeable wobble when climbing out of the saddle; nothing unpredictable or overly flexy, but you could feel it's effect on handling. Descents were pretty much all grins and wahoos, though. Overall, I love the Hunqapillar. We're carfree so it gets ridden daily for transportation/utility, and it's always a joy. Living in Seattle I can't go anywhere without climbing a hill, and frankly if my beat-up physiognomy can ride it up the hills, I'm confident that you won't be disappointed either. Re: [RBW] Re: Brooks Cambium C-17 First Look
To me this is a question of time in the saddle. If I'm commuting or on a ride up to about 25 miles, normal shorts/undies are fine (though I still find cotton lousy due to lack of wicking). If I'm doing a longer ride, I'll put on the padded wool shorts. It's not just the padding that helps on longer rides. Loose-fitting pants/shorts rubbing for more than a few hours will eventually cause abrasions. Seems to be physics (friction?). I am guessing that everyone has a different thick-skin threshold. It's like wool - some folks can't wear it without major itch. Brian Seattle, WA On Wed, Jun 19, 2013 at 3:10 PM, Eric Platt epericmpl...@gmail.com wrote: Another data point. Starting this year, decided to try the hammock with padded again. Unfortunately the same physical issue appeared. Once again back to the Terry and no problem. It could be the issues had nothing to do with the change of clothing, but after having it happen twice, am not going to risk it again. Re: [RBW] Re: I rode my A. Homer Hilsen on a 600K brevet (a link to a blogpost)
I like my AHH for my rando rides - I have it all set up, but still ride a lot of commute miles on it. The farthest I've done so far is 200k, but have a goal to get a 300k in this year. I'm doing the slow but sure method of increasing mileage, and can't imagine a 600/1200k yet! I am a bit biased in that I think a 650b bike would be great due to the wide, comfortable tires you can put on it. That would put the AHH or a small San Marcos ahead of the Roadeo in my book. The Sam Hillbornes make a fine rando bike too. I rode a 600k on my AHH. I have a Roadeo as a go faster/no fender supported event bike, but it could definitely be outfitted with a Mark's rack and fenders to make a fine rando bike. I don't think the fact that it is lighter than an AHH should play much into the equation. If I were riding around with little sleep, then I think I might prefer the slightly more stable-handling AHH over the Roadeo, but that might come down to personal preference... Re: [RBW] Re: Am I nuts?
On the recent Seattle vs Portland Rumble ride, we had 3 Hilsens and a Hillborne do a few miles of nasty rutted jeep trail down a 4-10% grade at speed (15-30mph) for a few miles. I was amazed how completely great the bike felt on a ride I would normally do on a front suspension MTB. This was with skinny Cypres tires and a boxy Rando bag on the front Mark's rack with two cameras, a rain coat, and trail mix inside. I managed to pinch flat the rear tire on one of the nastier sections, but this was my fault in that I dumped some air pressure thinking I would need more traction. My biggest problem was feet slipping off the pedals on some big hits. The country bike is a great mountain bike, and it doesn't even need fat tires if you are willing to live with a little abuse. It tracked really well for me even with a front load, and was never twitchy. Now, the Hunqapillar with Albatross, Duremes, and V's felt even more forgiving the day before, but that descent was much less knarly except for the short stretch down to the river. There are some fast/flowy sections I would ride my SO... but there are other technical, rooty, rocky and steep parts I will only ride my MTB on. It's also due to the frame sizing... I've sized my SO and Bomba (larger) for long distance pedaling on fairly predictable terrain; my MTB frame is sized (smaller) for tight, technical gnarly stuff. Re: [RBW] Fwd: Seattle tour Oct. 1st: weather too iffy?
In general, the weather goes gray on Sept 15th, but last year we had a sunny, warm October. Who really knows? Brian Hanson On Jun 5, 2013, at 1:00 PM, Anne Paulson anne.paul...@gmail.com wrote: Hey Pacific Northwest Riv folks, My touring buddy and I are thinking about a bike tour starting end of Sept/beginning of Oct, loaded touring with camping. What do you think? I suppose we could also consider doing the tour, but credit-card style. Re: [RBW] Re: SEA v PDX... and the winner is...
To add to what Andy said - I also found our 2nd-day's adventure to be the best ride in years! It always helps to endo into the snow on your Hilsen at speed, pinch flat the rear (of course!) Cypres while slamming down some rocky, rutted, melt-draining dirt trails waiting for arm-pump to set in, fall on the seat twice when your feet pop off the pedals in the rocks, and - oh yeah - do it all with a bunch of awesome-fun, like-minded riv geeks! Wow - I now understand underbiking, but I would say a Hilsen can do anything that doesn't involve major air. Best bike ever! The Hunqa was great on day 1, too! The Portland crew whipped up a spaghetti dinner then we settled around the camp fire until well after dark. In the morning the Seattle crew (aka Brian) was the first one up so he got a fire going and cooked a big batch of eggs. After breakfast and cleaning up around camp, Charlie had to head home, but the rest of us headed out to investigate the snow level. We figured we'd eventually be stopped by the snow and have to turn around. The snow ended up being mostly melted. We got crazy close to making the connection to connect to our 40 mile loop. We implemented the Manny Principle (keep pressing forward despite not really knowing what's up ahead and even though it's likely to cause you to be late getting home). The loop turned out to include a spectacular 5 mile descent down a jeep road. Following the ride we loaded the bikes into the cars and headed our separate ways. As for who won the Rumble… I't wasn't exactly clear. We were so pre-occupied riding, telling stories, geeking out on bikes, and generally having a great time that the Rumble part of it fell off the radar. Their mountain biker decided to retire, so I was asked to join the team. The mountain bike leg is about 13 miles long and mixed terrain and surfaces, but not extremely technical. They also decided to change the name of the leg to Cross-Country Bike. Country Bike? Sounds like a job for my Riv! I have a couple of mountain bikes, but knew the Riv would be faster overall. I pre-rode the course on Saturday with JB greens. What fun! The tires worked great on the fairly dry course. The Silver sidepulls had plenty of mud clearance, and worked fine in the muck. I did have one mishap fairly early in the event - I leaned over to far on wet pavement, lost the front and laid it down. Luckily, it was a slow/tight/technical 90 degree turn. That did cause me to be a bit more cautious, and possibly the minute I needed to crack Top 100 glory. Re: [RBW] Re: Alba vs. Bosco
I offer a different opinion on the Bosco. I find it to be more versatile than the Albatross as it gives a nice long stretched flats position, and a few upright positions. You need one of two things to make this bar work - a longer top tube that you may find typically appropriate for your sizing, or an extra long stem. I use a 13cm stem and it pushes the bar out far enough to get me in the sweet spots where it's not bonking my knees on turns, and I can get low in the headwinds. The Albatross is a great bar as well, but offers less outright extreme versatility in positions. The stretched position at the curves puts your palms down and slightly out which is not ergonomically optimal in my opinion. That's where I'd rather see the Albas have no rise, or a tad amount of drop (like the new Moustache). [RBW] Albas and Vs
http://flic.kr/s/aHsjFbUfmC The commute home on the new Alba setup. In short, I really love these bars on the Hunqapillar. It gives a great range of positions, and the older mtb long stem reaches me out for those pesky May headwinds that are a blowin'. The wide stance gives me a lot more control like the Midges, but with more variety in back angles (more comfort when I want it). The other change that has transformed this bike is to put V-brakes on the front. I had mad-shudder with the Tektro 720s, and it is completely gone with the V's. Yeah V's! Thanks Jim! Can we get a Seattle headcount on this ride? Who's in so far? I can take one person with me in my pickemup truck. Also - are we aligned on a date/time yet? How about meeting up in Randle/Packwood at noonish on Saturday the 1st? Folks (like me) that are overnighting can head out Sunday from the campground, with others leaving Saturday night? It looks like there is about 77 snow at white pass today (5800 ft). Perhaps 4 ft of snow a thousand feet lower would be my uneducated guess. If temps stay in the 40s for the next few weeks, we may be OK. Re: [RBW] Are Rivendells too versatile?
Mike - they're ahhsome. I've now had mine in about 7 configurations, and each one worked way better than most bikes I've ridden. I've gone through 7, 8, and 9-speed with friction and indexing, Noodle 46, 42, B115, B135 Randos, and Porteurs. I haven't had Albatross bars on it yet, but give me some more time - I'm about to change out the Midge bars on the Hunqapillar for Albas... The thing I like most about the AHH is the (god forbid) light weight, and ability to put wide tires, racks, bags, and different drivetrains. Right now, as the Rando bike, it has all the nice stuff on it, so it's going to stay that way for a while... http://flic.kr/p/egKppk Brian Hanson Seattle, WA On Thu, May 16, 2013 at 9:20 AM, Mike mjawn...@gmail.com wrote: I've had my Hilsen now almost 5yrs. Since I first had it I've always run 46cm Nitto Noodles. Lately I've been thinking of either switching to 48cm Noodles like I have on my LHT and love, along with going to a wider tire (700x38 Marathons). But then why go to that trouble given I already have my LHT. Seems redundant. I've also considered swapping out to Albatross bars, especially after seeing pictures of Grant's Hilsen and Manny's friend Mike's Hilsen: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mannyacosta/8344568536/in/faves-41335973@N00/ And this one too: http://www.flickr.com/photos/davidlemon/5105881635/in/faves-41335973@N00/ There was a time when I never would have entertained putting a bar like this on the Hilsen. Irish straps are great, but where do you use them and doesn't it block the handy big opening? I take my bike on fire roads frequently. Good bits included some fast Paul Racer brake-testing descents (worked perfectly) at about 40 mph, and a nice single-track climb up from the Sound. The Homer can climb like a cross country bike! http://flic.kr/s/aHsjEYnmQr Brian Hanson Seattle, WA -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Happy to oblige. Just took some photos on the commute to work yesterday. Still get comments on this copper paint! Re: [RBW] Re: Riding without a computer
I've used an iPhone and currently have a Garmin 810. I like them both for different reasons. The Garmin is more of a single purpose device I use on longer rides. The main differentiator for me is that Garmin's battery life (17 hrs) compared to the iPhone's (4 hrs). I generally have the iPhone data collecting on the commutes, and the Garmin on the longer rides. Size also matters here - I found the iPhone workable in a bracket, but it was pretty large. The Garmin is about half as big, and less obtrusive. At some point, I'm sure this will all be built into a chip in my glasses, but I like to have data, so will likely always pack something... Brian Seattle, WA On Fri, May 3, 2013 at 11:49 AM, pb pbridge...@aol.com wrote: I go back and forth on this topic. I'll ride with no computer for a while and enjoy the freedom, then I'll go back to the Garmin. However, when I'm doing long rides, especially if I don't know the route, I always have the Garmin. A couple of years ago, I was somewhat lost in east San Diego County, 85 miles into a long day, out of water, in 90+ weather, and I didn't know where the next intersection or store was. That experience led me very promptly to the Garmin. I'm sure there are good arguments for using a phone instead, but I went to the Garmin, and I do like it. I also enjoy seeing my accumulated elevation gain. I suppose an i-phone could give me that? I don't have an I-phone, I have a droid, and I think the directions function sux with a capital x. The business functions work fine. The directions function not so much. pb -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
