I purchased this frame from a BOB, built it up and rode it once before hanging it in my office shop along side of my Atlantis and my Rambouillet, both of which are also for sale.  I am approaching 71 years of age, and it is time to clean out the stable.

This bicycle has a frame that is 49cm from center to the top of the seat tube or 19”. I’m not up on mountain bike sizing, but I am 5’9” and I think it fits me fine. This Bicycle has White Industries hubs attached to 26 inch Velocity Aeroheat AT  rims, a Shimano Deore Mega 9 front derailleur, and Shimano Deore rear derailleur, cool unidentified handlebar, and Nitto Technomic stem. This bicycle will be packed by my wonderful friends at the Bike Shed in Kearney, Nebraska and shipped via bike flights. I will be happy to subtract $200 from my price if you would like to road trip it to my home or near my home near Elwood, Nebraska to pick it up.

Price:  $1850.00 shipped to you in the CONUS.

I was just getting back into cycling again, after a 15 year hiatus.
Thanks to Rivendell, I was excited again about bikes, and GP helped me
choose some new parts (lugged stem, brooks saddle, Rolly-Polly's) to
go with a mix of new and NOS parts. For example, the Campagnolo Hi-Lo
hubset found a mate in a set of new Campagnolo Montreal rims.

Hope you like the pics from my dinky Olympus cycling camera.

Anyway, it's a great bike, a lovely rider, with plenty of memories.

I'd be willing to put together a Riv Rally Midwest sometime this upcoming
summer. Most likely it would be somewhere between Minneapolis and Madison
and a 2-day weekend format with camping and hotel options. Also, most
likely there would be ride route options to suit different fitness levels
 and adventurousness thresholds (nothing extreme).

 Anybody interested?

Re: [RBW] Mountains of the Rose City

Thanks for the pix. Just beautiful. . . the mountain was, too.

Even though we'd never met, list member Norm and I recognized each other from
across the street. He was sitting at a sidewalk table in front of a coffee
shop and I was walking my bike on the sidewalk to the crosswalk to come meet
him. We had connected through the list here. His orange All Rounder and my
 blue AHH were dead giveaways.

We discussed destinations/routes a little bit and were soon on our way. About
half a mile up the road there was a sudden and horrible sound from my rear
wheel. It was the sound of metal clanging against metal. I slammed on the
brakes and looked back. Everything looked ok but the tire was flat before the
bike was even stopped. Further investigation led me to a #4 finish nail
through the sidewall of my tire. The sound was the nail hitting the
seat+chain+fender stays... like a finger strums a harp. Fortunately I had
pliers in my tool roll because the nail was in there really tight. The spare
tube came in handy too. I got the wheel back together and we were back on the
 road.

Our first real stop was Mt Tabor. We got peek-a-boo views of Mt Hood and a
nice clearing provided views toward downtown Portland, but the forest was too
dense on the Mt St Helens side to really see any thing. Next stop was Rocky
Butte. There's an interesting structure that looks like a castle from the
outside, but when you get up to it the castle is full of dirt and is just a
lawn and walking path with a spectacular view. Norm and I ate a snack, took a
few pics, and soaked in the view. It was time to head home. As I was turning
onto my street I was thinking it was perfect timing 'cause it was just about
time to dig the lights out of the saddlesack.

A fun little adventure with some great views and good conversation.

According to the WSJ, the Adjusted Gross Income required to be in
America's top 1% (in 2008) was $380,354. If this is representative of
most Rivendell owners, I need to find another group because I'm

Man! What a story. It makes my almost 59 year old bones feel young again.
You are my hero for the whole week! Congrats. david
On Jul 19, 2011, at 9:10 PM, Liesl wrote:

Despite this record-breaking heat and humidity here in the Twin
Cities, my partner Erin on her Quickbeam and I on my single-speed
Proto-Bleriot elected to do our 20-mile round trip commute to work.
The ride home was 98 degrees with a dew point at about 80 degrees…this
put the heat index up somewhere like 100-115 degrees. Right balmy.
Two blocks from home, as I’m looking forward to air conditioning and a
cold one, all hell broke loose.

Up in front of me is a maroon Mercury Cougar, and I’m thinking, “When
did I last see a Cougar?” As I’m gazing, the car slows down and a
young man hops out to go to the convenience store. I wait to see if
the Cougar is going to park, but no, it just keeps going. As we
proceed down the road, a bicycle passes me, and then I hear yelling
behind me. I turn back to see another young man running like the
blazes shouting, “That guy stole my bike! Stop him! That guy stole
my bike!” It’s the dude from the Cougar who had passed me on the
 bike!

So I stood up and bore down hard on my peddles in hot pursuit. He was
riding on the sidewalk next to a big park and I was just behind him in
the street. After about 3-4 blocks he started to fade—remember it was
literally close to 100 degrees—and I caught up to him.

“You stole that bike!” I yelled fiercely. It was clear that he wasn’t
aware that I had been on his heels. “You stole that bike! Just drop
it and walk away,” I commanded. His grin faded ever so slightly.

“I see you,” I continued sternly (albeit between gulps of air). “I
see your face, I see your clothes, I see the number on your jersey.”
His grin dimmed. I looked at his bare arm. “I see your tattoo,” I
said and looked him in the eye. “I see you. Drop the bike and walk
away.” He knew the tattoo meant I could ID him. He looked away,
dropped the bike, and wobbled off, his legs spent.

A dude in the park had watched the whole thing and called out, “Whoa!
You just caught that guy and made him give up the bike, man! You
chased him down in this heat, and you made him drop the bike. You
beat him and you’re twice his age, man!”

Erin rode up, having stopped to call 911, and the young man who owned
the bike came up huffing and puffing and was ever thankful to have the
 bike back.

Most of the time, I count myself as one of the slower people out there
on a commute filled with lycra-clad boys riding carbon racers. At 52,
I’m all for bike lingering. But today, I busted it out at the end of
a scalding hot ride and beat a kid who in all likelihood was not two
but three times younger than me, and I caught up to him when it
counted and got a stolen bike back.

 Feels damn good.

 Yours,
 Liesl

Thanks for the note, Bill. I haven't been able to ride as much this year as I
would normally get to. I'm a private practice mental health therapist and I
own my own business. Business is very, very good. . . but that's not good for
my riding. I'm hoping to do better in the second half of the year. I have so
enjoyed your bike, though. It is just the sweetest of rides. I have it set up
pretty comfy except for the handlebars, really, but it is so nimble that I just
know that it would be a hoot on the single track. I love all of my bikes, but
this bike is a special piece of history that is truly fun to ride. I hope you
are well and riding. Keep in touch. david

Subject: [RBW] FS: 2 Brooks Saddles
 From: absen...@gmail.com
 To: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com

 Hello all,

I have two Brooks saddles for sale.

 1)

First up is a 3-year old Brooks Swift, black with titanium rails. I
only rode it for about two years and not too regularly — the other
half of the time, I was riding my race bikes. It's in fair to good
condition. Included is a sparingly used tin of Proofide. $130 shipped
USPS priority or $120 local pick up in San Francisco.

 Photos below:
 http://www.dropbox.com/gallery/19185/1/brooksswift?h=2ddd87

 2)

My wife recently got a Sam Hillborne which she loves and we built it
up with a Brooks Imperial (Men's) in Antique Brown with chrome rails.
Unfortunately, the saddle didn't agree with her and she went back to
getting another Specialized BG Women's saddle which she's been riding
forever on her Waterford. So, after a brief 10 miles, the saddle is
back in the box with all the extras (spare laces, spanner) for someone
to provide a new home to. $120 shipped USPS Priority or $110 local
 pick-up in San Francisco.

RE: [RBW] Christmas Loot Pre-Ride Briefing

A ride on the trainer and a run on the treadmill was all I could muster for
yesterday or today. Blizzard conditions with 45 to 50 mph gusts made me
thankful for my wood stove. One of my daughters is snowed in at her
in-laws-to-be and the other lives in Austin, TX with her husband. Both have
been in touch, but the Holiday seems strange without them. Best Holiday wishes

[RBW] Re: Ethics: What to do if I am scammed by a list member?

2009-10-08 Thread DAVID BLESSING

Certainly a thread that most of us will watch carefully. I'm a lurker for the
most part; I seldom feel like I've got much depth of knowledge to share. I
just love bikes. I have had wonderful experiences buying items from fellow RBW
members. I too have sent items before I've been paid and I've received items
before my payment has arrived at its destination. One recent purchase arrived
pretty late. It looked like it had been through the postal wars in getting to
me, but it got here and the item was well-packed and so in excellent shape. I
hope that this works out positively. There are few places on the net that have
the same warmth. Best to all. david blessing on the cold soon to be snowy

 Bummer.

I sure do appreciate the hesitation to engage in a lynchin' before the
facts are known. I, too, prefer to believe that people are good and
honest. I'd like to believe that we've found a good little on line
community here in the best sense of that word.

Jim posted a little while ago about folks who join the group simply to
post FS or Trade items. I have to wonder if this person was one of
those. I've been considering putting a bunch of stuff up for sale on
the RBW group, but I've been hesitant because of dealing with the
financial transactions. I'd like to think I could trust folks and that
people would trust me. I'd hope that most folks would think I was OK
because I've posted regularly and, I hope, helpfully. I guess I'd be
looking for the same kind of track record from anyone I'd sell or
 trade something with.

 I hope this resolves well.
