Re: [RBW] Hillibikes are so close!

2022-07-29 Thread Daniel MacPherson
Okay. I have Albatross bars on my Surly with.no flex. But the stem is
headless so I wonder if the tall Nitto stem is the main contributing
culprit. I don’t mind a little flex but this is too much.

I was thinking the Jim stem with the double bolt and uprise angle might
solve the problem. Thoughts?

Re: [RBW] Hillibikes are so close!

2022-07-29 Thread Daniel MacPherson

Hey Everyone,

I’m having issues with my handlebar set-up. I’m running Nitto Technomic
stem with Billie bars. The Billie bars are 25.4. The Nitto stem is 26.0.
I’m using a problem solvers shim to fit the bars properly.

Anyway, I get a lot of flex in the Billie bars when I apply any weight to
the bars. I’ve applied a lot of torque to the nut on the stem and it helps
a bit but doesn’t solve the issue. I’m worried it might be the headset;
however the headset appears tight and smooth. Have you guys experienced
similar issues? Thoughts?

Thanks,

Re: [RBW] Silver2 shifter apparently shift 12 speeds fine, even with SRAM rd

2022-07-13 Thread Daniel MacPherson
When my Silver1 shifter broke and I replaced it with a Suntour Barcon. I
was surprised by how easier it was to shift to the last cog on a 10 speed
cassette compared to the Silver1 shifter. My initial set-up with the
Silver1 shifter was with a Deore XT 10-speed derailleur. The last cog was
almost impossible to shift and sometimes didn't. I replaced the Deore Xt
with a Claris 9-speed derailleur and that fixed the problem. However, I had
to swing the Silver1 shifter all the way up to get to the last cog. It is
now easier with Suntour Barcon. I sometimes wonder why a bicycle company
hasn't come out with a modern version of the Suntour Barcon

Re: [RBW] Mechanical: Bent rapid rise derailer cage

2022-07-12 Thread Daniel MacPherson

Any sign of an accident? Maybe a bunch of scrapes along the pulley cage. If
it’s that bent you would expect some visible damage. But i would exhaust
all other options before trying to straighten the pulley cage. I’ve never
done it. It strikes me as very difficult to do it without damaging the rest
of the derailleur.

Re: [RBW] Re: Long reach brake options for AHH

2022-07-10 Thread Daniel MacPherson

I agree with the sentiment that road bikes look better with calipers on
them. Though I find the long-reach caliper brakes (Tektro R559) to be
rather ugly looking. Road bikes with disc brakes or v-brakes still look odd
to me. I assume they must be gravel or cyclocross bikes. Maybe Rivendell
should develop some kick-ass long reach caliper brakes.

Re: [RBW] Re: Long reach brake options for AHH

2022-07-09 Thread Daniel MacPherson

I once installed Tektro R559 brakes on a friends 27” to 700 road bike
conversion. She mentions to this day that she could never stop adequately
on that bike. Personally, I don’t understand bikes that need long reach
calipers. Either go canti/v-brake or disc brakes for these type of bikes.

2022-06-23 Thread Daniel MacPherson

Not many options for wide-rimmed tubeless compatible rims that can handle

V-brakes unfortunately. I had a QBP watchlist set-up between the
cliffhanger rim and the Velo Orange Voyager rim. QBP received 3 cliffhanger
rims one day in January and I snatched it up.

I’m having squealing issues as well with my kool stop pads. If it continues
I’ll put back the stock black Avid pads.

700cc tires. 2.3 inches G-One Speed Light Tires. Very little tread so they
are quick.

So far I love the feel of the bike (very comfy). It feels surprisingly
light given its length and steel nature. My only issue is some
self-steering issues while turning, but I don't know if that's due to
headset issues, the design of the bike, or the tires. Anyone else
