Richard, this is from Will's latest email about the Roadunos.

It's not on the size chart yet, but the Homer is almost exactly the same

Special Bikes for Blue Lug

Some of you know that BLUE LUG is a Japanese bicycle company and retailer
that, in some ways, is a better rivendell than we are. Unbounded admiration
for Blue Lug, can't rave enough, and so on.

For the past three years there has been, let's say, a long and drawn-out
expedition to make ten or twelve made-in-America by Mark Nobillette special
Rivendell bicycles. Our choice of design, sized small-to-med, and
med-to-large.

We had new lugs made for them. We made a new decal, and got a new batch of
head badges. Joe Bell helped us pick the paint, and he's painting them
unassisted with some special, no-longer-available paint--keeping it out of
the landfill.

We'll have some of them here by late December MAYBE. I bet it's late
January. This whole process has been a days become weeks become months
thing, always for good reasons, but extremely frustrating. We will
de-fo-nate-ly keep these offa Instagram.

To whoever bought this, if you don't fancy that crankset, I'd be interested
in buying it. (I know, I know, it's a long shot.)

Re: [RBW] Snapped Clem seat binder bolt

I’ve had that happen on a new Riv before.

This is from a Riv newsletter last year:

*Also, make sure to grease the binder bolts before you tighten them down.
They ship to us dry and they have a tendency to gall and not tighten down
enough unless they're greased up.*

I’m also a fan of pink bicycles, great choice!

Roman’s Legolas and the Jonny Cycles Big Pink are two of my favorites.

No doubt your custom will be added to my list of favorites. Looking forward

Doh! Just noticed that yours is a slotted screw in the photo, which
reminded me that I swapped out the original screw on mine to one with a 3mm
socket head. I don't remember if I had to replace the nut at the same time,
so probably best to disregard my previous post and just bring the whole
thing to the hardware store.

Hi Roberta,

That screw should be an M4 x 0.7 mm pitch thread. I think ~16mm in length
should be adequate. Is the nut on the other side still in place?

I'm curious to hear what ends up resolving the issue. I hope it's as easy
as a new cassette, but I'm most intrigued by it being related to the
elongated hole.

Re: alignment tools, after borrowing my friend's Park DAG a handful of
times over a few months, I decided to buy my own tool. Ended up with the
Wolf Tooth one that Stephen linked to. Have only used it once so far, but I
found it to work quite well. Doesn't take up much room in the drawer, and I
don't have to endure the frequent screeching of metal sliding on metal that
I experienced with the Park tool.

I sized up on my Bedrocks as well. Another vote for printing out their

would have saved the trouble of exchanging my 11s for 12s.

off-list- Re: [RBW] FS: 60cm Gus complete or F/F/HS

2023-07-25 Thread Danny
Hi Scott,

Such a gorgeous bike/build, nice work! If I didn't already own an orange
Susie, I'd be mighty tempted.

If someone buys just the F/F/HS instead of the complete, and you decide to
sell off the parts, just wanted to throw it out there that I'd be
interested in those Paul levers.

Hope you're able to move it on as a complete, would be a shame to break up
such a nice build, but I get that folks wanna build up their own visions as
well.

Take care,
Danny

Is the Gus seat tube ovalized down at the bottom like the Susie? I seem to
remember being the case.

If so, I ran into an issue trying to fit a low clamp FD with a 24-34-guard

ovalized portion.

Here are a handful of off-peak fall foliage photos

from a 70-mile ride I did yesterday outside of Eugene, OR, with roadie
friends who were visiting from Utah. Even though the foliage isn't super
vibrant up here, the lighting this time of year is really spectacular.

@Mack, what's your saddle height? At 6'3" w/ a 97cm pbh, I never thought

Re: [RBW] Re: Perfect tires for Clem?

2022-11-01 Thread Danny Noonan
Not quite the same tire sizes, but as far as tread goes, I really wasn't
impressed by the Ultradynamico Mars when I ran the 26 x 2.3 (JFF) version
on my Velo Orange Polyvalent two summers ago. They were very loud and slow
on pavement, and only marginally more capable on light trail than the RH
Rat Trap Passes I was previously running (and switched back to). I'm sure
more gnarly trails like what Ron rides up in New England these days are a
different story altogether, and probably where the Mars shines. But not
really an all-road tire.

For what it's worth I do really like the RH knobbies on my Homer, but
they're 700c x 42.

Re: [RBW] Susie / Gus questions

2022-10-20 Thread Danny
I'm not sure if this company is still in business, and I can't speak to the
quality of their product, but I found them while searching for a dropper
option for my dad this past year. (He's lost some flexibility in his hip as
he's aged, so I thought a dropper might make mounting/dismounting his bike
easier.)

https://gravitydropper.com/products/
They offer a 26.8 option for all their products.

If anyone has any experience w/ the company or their products, please chime
in.

Hoping to get out on some MTB trails next week w/ my Susie. Swapped out the
Billie bars for a bullmoose setup and looking forward to seeing how it
handles. Like others have said, the Susie is a really lively ride and a joy
to be on. I've yet to try a Gus or Clem in my size, so not much help for
comparison there.

Hi Richard,

According to Soma
<https://www.somafabshop.com/shop/product/nitto-handlebar-stem-b909-rivendell-bosco-bull-moose-2762>'s
listing for the Boscomoose the "Stem has about 150mm reach and 190mm long
quill". I believe the Riv FacePlater has a 230mm quill length. Wish I had
a Boscomoose to trade you for that FacePlater. If you decide to sell it,

[RBW] Re: 2021 Homer wheelbase numbers

2022-08-24 Thread Danny Noonan
Yeah I just hand-measured my new 61.5 Homer and got a similar measurement
to Bones.

Damon, I think a Home would be excellent for the purposes you described.
I've only had mine for a bit over a week but absolutely loving it so far.
As far as randonneuring/Brevets go, I got the Homer in part to replace a
Velo Orange Polyvalent after I did a 200km and found the VO to be a bit
lacking in performance and just generally overbuilt for that type of riding
(thicker tubes for loaded touring, stouter fork to accommodate the disc
brakes, etc.). Haven't done a long distance ride on it yet but I've done a
couple 20-30 miles rides and it's very noticeable how much more sprightly
and responsive it is compared to the VO. Definitely think that,
particularly at your weight, a Homer would have no problem doing
double-duty as an S24O / light touring bike. That Clem H you have is
awesome though and different enough that I'd be looking to keep both if you
can (at least until you get that Atlantis)!

Re: [RBW] Re: How Many Bars on the Appaloosa?

2022-08-09 Thread Danny
Eric, thanks for the stem/bar rundown, very helpful info for me. I'm
currently running a 110mm FacePlater w/ Billies on my Appaloosa, but I've
got the itch to try something different.

And glad to hear my photos encouraged you try out the Suntour thumbies. I
still have them on a couple of bikes and they're working out really well
(and their affordability is a big plus!). I do really like the Riv thumb
mount for the fine tuning of the cable exit angle. I've been considering
attempting to mod one of my Suntour thumbies with additional detent holes
in the perch base to mimic the Riv mount's adjustability. If I do, I'll
start a thread on the bobs list for that project.

Re: [RBW] Riv-ish cycling in Door County, WI

2022-08-08 Thread Danny
Hi Forrest,

If you're near Peninsula State Park, the Sunset Trail
<https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/parks/peninsula/recreation/biking> is a
leisurely ride with some great views and nice stretches through the forest.
The paved roads through the park are also really nice to ride on and car
traffic was low in my experience. (I camped in the park Sun - Wed this past
October, so I can't speak to weekend or summer traffic, but I imagine it's
a bit busier.)

I'm hoping to get back out that way this fall to explore more of the area
by bicycle. There seemed to be plenty of smaller roads off the main highway
on the bay side that would connect you to other parks and small towns.
Hopefully someone with more experience in the area will chime in with some
routes.

Re: [RBW] Adding pedal pins

2022-08-05 Thread Danny
Depending on the size of your screws, you may need to adjust your drill bit
size.

Copy/pasted from the Riv site, photos of the process at the link below.

*These are for those of you who are handy with a drill and not intimidated
by the prospect of changing metal forever. If you're familiar with a simple
hand drill you can easily get these to work with our Grip Kings to get them
to get even grippier. The tiny nubs on the Grip Kings are already just the
perfect size to be drilled out to accept these spikes; no special tapping
is even needed---these spikes will self-tap themselves just fine. Use an
3/32" or 1/8" bit---the smaller size (3/32") means a tighter fit, but the
1/8" is fine, and makes it easier to screw in. These screw in real easy
with a 2mm <http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/tl019.htm> or 5/64" allen
wrench. *
