[RBW] Re: FOUND! - A Homer Hilsen - SF

2013-06-24 Thread Dave Rivbike
Hi Maelcolm,

Dave at riv here. About a month ago a customer called mentioning a stolen A
Homer Hilsen, didn't have his serial number handy (let that be a lesson!)

I told him to come here (the bunch) and post it, don't think he ever did.
He'd never heard of the owner's bunch. If you don't mind calling us up here
800 345 3918 tomorrow I can check our order history and maybe connect the
dots.

Re: [RBW] Anybody ordering to enter the Sam/Betty raffle? And usual excellent customer service from Riv folks

2013-06-01 Thread Dave Rivbike
Hi Everyone,

Dave here, reporting from the road in the SF popup store so this will be my
only post today.

Returning or cancelling an order technically cancels you from the contest.
That was in the rules, at least. But of course if you return it after June
3rd, what can we do, tell you you didn't win? Or redo the raffle with your
ticket omitted? You know the usual story: we need to raise money, we put
on these offers to get cashflow. So if you return your order, we lose the
sale and everyone who placed a big order and didn't win would feel like
returning that too, then where are we? That's why we put the no
cancels/returns clause in there. If you need to return something, like a
wrong size or defective or the usual "our fault" stuff, please return it
for store credit, in the spirit of the raffle, and we'll keep you in the
running. Just get store credit and we're square. Ok? If we get a huge
number of returns after the winner is announced... lesson learned. I doubt
that though. We have good customers. Questions? email me d...@rivbike.com

We'll announce it June 3rd on the blug if the winner is okay with the
publicity.

The backorder clause was for backorders placed before the contest started.
After that, you're in!

If there are any questions or concerns please email me directly
d...@rivbike.com and I'll get back to you from my phone. Rest assured that
anything we do will be in the interest of fairness to everyone. Basically,
you're in.

Good luck to everyone out there and wish us luck on our opening day in SF
today. Also Jared's birthday. Will's is tomorrow.

Our San Francisco Popup is coming soon. June 1-9, Noon-7pm.

Opening day is next Saturday. At 5pm we'll have some kind of special thing,
a meet and greet with a giveaway.

I envision a city block with a Riv on every parking meter.

I posted the specifics on the Blug. rivbike.tumblr.com
That's where I will post any updates.

Hope to see you there.

[RBW] Re: Devil's slide tunnel

2013-05-15 Thread Dave Rivbike
I rode up Planet of the Apes, down the dirt to the highway then north back
through the new tunnel on Saturday. The stretch of road immediately before
the tunnel is pretty dicey. No shoulder at all (not an exaggeration, none)
and fast traffic taking the blind turns at speed. And once you're out, you
have to merge into the car lane again, and they've picked up speed in the
tunnel. That said, I survived! Once you're in the tunnel the bike lane is
as wide as the car lane. Hope a motorist won't confuse it for a passing
lane though. It's neat in there, with huge fans blowing. Two things made me
not want to do it again though: the tunnel amplified a motorcycle exhaust
ripping through there so loud it was.. unpleasant, and it had to be 100
degrees in there, despite being a cool Pacifica day.

The opposite is taking the PoftheApes. Quiet, secluded, maybe a bit
challenging, cool, ocean views.
The old condemned part of the highway did not appear to be open yet. It
will be a neat loop if/when they do.

http://www.rivbike.com/New-Stuff-s/489.htm

I'll be mentioning them in the email update on Friday, so, well, get them
now, they've been selling fast. Also a bunch of cheap 105 hubs from the
archives at that link.

[RBW] Re: Staff Bikes is back

2013-02-01 Thread Dave Rivbike
I didn't leave anyone out by intention, I just rounded up the bikes that
were here yesterday, a Thursday. That's who was here. More coming.

There's no prep or dressing up or "wait, let me put my fenders back on" so
I'll try to sneak them when the bikes aren't prepared.

[RBW] Re: Suspicious? Protovelo for sale on CL

2012-04-24 Thread Dave Rivbike
I know the story on this.

It was built by Scott States. He owns Discount Muffler and Brakes next
door to Riv HQ.
You may have seen the blue bike hanging there when you visited.
He built the frame to show his brazing skills.

I asked him about this and he told me to REPORT THE BIKE AS STOLEN.

[RBW] Re: Nuance of the rebate system

2012-02-02 Thread Dave Rivbike
Thanks for the comments. I first hand understand the confusion, I set
it up! That's why I'm also so proud to announce that it's a'changin.
It's currently an overall improvement, methinks, over the OLD WAY of
rebates but not perfect I admit so we're sweetening the deal.

All the comments make perfect sense and the limitations we have in
place are there because that's the way the software decided it to be.
Not because we thought it should be that way. I've pulled out more
hair about rebates old and new than anyone.

So not getting any rebate on orders in which credit was used has to
stay. There's no way around that, for now, but other merchants
including us have put in requests to have that changed on the next
update. It may just happen but don't hold your breath. That's why I
made sure to mention it on the Rebate page.

The $1 credit creaming a rebate on a $2000 frame is the perfect storm
example. I don't defend that quirk, but it's very easy to prevent that
scenario, especially since you have to order the frames by phone.
It's their way of preventing the rebate-on-rebate losing money
scenario.  Fingers crossed it's resolved (allowing partial credit) in
an upcoming update, but for now we can manually adjust it IF YOU BUY A
FRAME/BIKE and that happens. It will happen maybe 20 times. We'll give
you the credit for the non rebatey amount. Just let us know.

I've done so already on the SimpleOnes that you CAN buy through the
site presently. But as for spare nickels and dollars here and there on
anything less than a frame, you're on your own for now. I don't think
it's too hard to plan around.  Especially when you read the rest of
this post.

So we're working with that limitation (no credit on credit, which
isn't entirely unfair) and changing the other stuff in a way I think
everyone will prefer because it gives you maximum flexibility (even
more than the now-preferred rebates of old). It's surely as fair a
free money giveaway as anyone can think of.

1. Expiration Dates: EMBIGGENED

The whole idea of expiration was to get you to come back and buy stuff
again, along with us thanking you for buying stuff. We need more
frequent orders.  We said 150 days, but the grace period was huger
than we'll ever admit.

And then there's this development: once you "redeem" the points, it
turns into a gift credit on your account THAT DOES NOT EXPIRE. So
redeem your 1000 rebate points for $50 in credit within that
expiration date and the $50 sits on your account forever until you
place your next order, and then it's AUTOMATICALLY applied. In that
way there's really no expiration. It's already that way.

But now, after one month of seeing how it works in real life, we're
upping the ante to a whopping 1000 days. That's just under three years
to save up all the points you want then redeem them all at once for a
huge purchase or little by little for smaller purchases as you see
fit. You decide when and how much you want to use. If you don't want
to use credit, just don't redeem. You're still in charge of making
sure the credit you're about to use is about the same as your order
total because of the aforementioned limitation.

2. No Rebate Points on orders that have even partial credit used:
STAYS AS IS

Can't get around it folks. No way. By using the rebate at all you
agree to this fact. It has this caveat. You've been warned and can
totally plan around it without too much fuss.

The 20 points for one buck / nickel per point system is again, just
working with what we've got. It's how you get 5%. It is, as you
mention, possible to change the numbers so that you'd have tens of
thousands of points to cash in for actual dollar amounts, but I just
though it more clear to show a $1000 purchase turned into 1000 points
the next day. Makes sense right? Maybe the wording could be clearer.
Your available balance there is you total in pretax purchases. Bust
out your phone and multiply that number by 0.05 and you've got your
amount.

I hope everyone understands that we're just trying to make everything
better for our customers and will continue to adapt. This new improved
rebate system now allows you to save up loads of points without
worrying about expiration so much and be in control of the cashing
out. If there's unanimous calls of "this is lame" out there at the end
of the year, we can go back to the old once/year way with a strict 1
year expiration.

[RBW] Re: Trouble loading Rivbike.com

2012-01-26 Thread Dave Rivbike
Yes, the slideshow. It makes the homepage heavier than it has to be.
Yet it's one of the most loved features of our site, has been for
years.
The images are downsized to a reasonable level, but you still have to
load them any time a new image is added or your cache is cleared.
For site speed, I'd love to have just one image there, the most recent
campout photo, but the slideshow is by far one of most popular
features on the site, so I'm kinda stuck there.

I think if I removed that, I'd get more heat than if I leave it.

One compromise is to simply have the most recent photo there on the
homepage with the featured products, and when you click on that image,
you redirect to the whole slideshow, or even better linked out to an
archive of ALL the previous homepage photos we've used in the past.
That way the site would load faster for everyone, and those that want
to watch pictures and simply click out to another page and can wait
for that to load.
Downside is you would get the same image each visit (till we change it
for a new one) instead of the random choice from the bunch.

Interested what y'all have to say about this?
I lean towards faster faster faster, but it might be a hard sell since
most folks seem to like it.

[RBW] 2011 Rebates, Membership

2011-12-23 Thread Dave Rivbike
Anyone whose membership is current or expired after September 1, 2011
gets one. Everything for every order on the new site is included. It
combines old site and new and will post in the form of a gift
certificate balance that you can access through the My Account link on
site. At least easier to deal with than before.

To guarantee that you'll get it in a timely, easy fashion make sure
you have registered on the new site with the same email you've used
with us in the past. We'll sort out issues as they come along, but
make sure your stuff is up to date.

Starting next year, membership is gratis. Once a member, always a
member. Five percent rebates will continue and free shipping on all
orders over $150 excluding wheels/frames/rims/bikes.

And rebates will be a live, ongoing thing. Not a once-a-year thing.
It'll work like this:
Place an order for $100 on Monday. Twenty four hours later on Tuesday
you'll be able to use your $5 rebate. It'll be good for 365 days. The
rebates keep adding up as you place orders, expiring as they hit 365
days. Cash them out whenever you want. For big bike purchases, you
don't have to wait till Jan to cash in. You can do it the next day.

We reserve the right to change this deal, but I wanted to clear up
confusion before it happens.

[RBW] Re: All American Roadeo

Even if you pounded out the lugs here, who knows where the steel came

USA, but the thread has been useful so far.
I learned of a few things I didn't know about.

[RBW] All American Roadeo

2011-12-21 Thread Dave Rivbike
Gestating the idea of an All American Roadeo.
Is it possible?
Would have gone with say an Atlantis, but I think the MUSA quill stem
doesn't exist.

Roadeo Frame
White Industries Crank
Phil BB, Spokes & Hubs
Chris King Headset
Paul Brakes
Thomson threadless stem, seatpost
Thomson even makes bolts

Here's the sticky stuff:

Chain, Cassette, Tires, Cabling, Shifters, Brake Levers, Rims,
Handlebars

Not sure if Bontrager stuff is all MUSA or not anymore, but they do
rims (complete wheels), handlebars, tires, saddles, bottle cages
Phil and White both make a single speed cogs but no cassettes...
Paul makes brake levers, but not for drops

Is it possible?
Any ideas for those last bits?
Is Bontrager MUSA?
Am I missing some great MUSA manufacturer?

I know of a custom knifemaker who machines his own cassettes, but to
buy one would probably be $999 or so.

More questions than answers. A monumental invoice total I'm sure, but
primo stuff.

[RBW] Re: updated geometry chart

2011-12-01 Thread Dave Rivbike
Thanks for the comments. Glad you all like my color coding.

We have rivbike.ORG to be a sort of archive like you mention.
I back up the BLUG locally each month and can push it to .org if
tumblr goes down
Old pics, random pdf stuff (although I like googledocs for that so
they're searchable) will live there.
And thank goodness for cyclofiend doing this already as Andrew
mentioned.

Next time we update the sizing chart I'll post it up too.

Appending the chart with old bike data isn't a priority, i wouldn't
even know where to find longlow, etc, but if someone out there has the
info and wants to make a spreadsheet by all means... I'll post it.
For now that cyclofiend link will have to suffice.

One of the many reasons for tumblr BLUG was to make it real easy to
post pictures and do away with the PDFs which were always a pain..
So expect less PDFs and more picture-laden blugs.
They should be easier to find, index-able in the blug archive, and no
more 20MB pdfs blocking up the homepage.

I appreciate the feedback and suggestions so keep it coming. Feel free
to email d...@rivbike.com
