[RBW] Re: replacing bearings in Phil Rivy FW hub
I've had the same problem. I contacted Phil Wood by email and I've pasted the response below. Unfortunately I still couldn't get it to work with these instructions. I just put it back together and kept riding, though I will eventually need to replace the bearings. It has been a few months since I've looked at it, so I can't remember the details. The following is the response I got from PW: Using a bolt that will fit into the axle on the side which the cap is removed from ( in order not to damage the thread ) support the hub without interfering with the bearing and tap firmly on the bolt with the hammer. The axle is shouldered on the inside so it will push the bearing out on the opposite side. If you go to this link on our web site we have pics of the axle/bearing being removed from a rear track hub, the concept is the same. http://www.philwood.com/support/partsservice.php This didn't work for me, but maybe it will work for you. Let me know if you find out how to do it. Dan On Jun 25, 10:13 pm, Thomas Lynn Skean thomaslynnsk...@comcast.net wrote: Hi, all! Anyone ever replaced the bearings in a Phil Rivy FW hub? Anybody ever actually done this? If so, how did you get the old bearings out? I have figured a way to get the end caps off but not how to get the old bearings out. Thanks! Hudson Urban Bikes is an interesting shop - they carry some new bikes and have an interesting selection of used bikes and very reasonable rentals near the west side bike path (nice ride up to GW bridge if you have the time). [RBW] Re: NYC Five Boro Tour May 1 - Registration Open
I did it last year. It is a fun, easy ride, but I suggest bypassing the start/registration point in Battery Park (you get what you need in the mail) and start uptown near, if not north of canal street. That way you can be in the front of the crowd, but still in the crowd. We started at Leonard Street last year and we were on the first ferry back with no wait. If I had to pick one NYC ride, I would wait for the New York City Century ride in the late summer - less crowded, good service, great routes. I had to get off and walk my bike at several locations because of the amount of cyclist trying to get onto a bridge from manhattan to the bronx. If you can ride at a fast pace the best place to be is at the front. I think there are VIP tickets now that put you at the front for $125.00 although you would be missing the hugh herd of cyclist in the middle of the pack.Pros and cons. If you are heading back on the ferry into manhattan be prepared for a long wait on the SI side. For me the highlight is riding in Brooklyn on the BQE and approaching the Verrazano bridge. [RBW] Singlespeed wheelset advice needed
I'm building a commuter bike right now and I need a strong singlespeed wheelset for my 225lb self. I'd like to be able to run 35mm tires and I have a limited budget. Basically, I'm looking for a set of Quickbeam wheels, but they don't seem to be available for purchase from riv. I'm considering the following wheelsets that all cost around, mostly below $200 and all have formula hubs - Sun CR18, VO PBP, Mavic A319, and a little more expensive Mavic Open Sport. I've read some horror stories about factory built/bicyclewheelwarehouse wheels, but does any one here have any experience/advice? Are the horror stories the outliers? I haven't had any luck finding anything used, but I'm open to used wheels. Thanks for any help. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: FS: Riv-ish 58cm Surly Pacer Club Racer Build
TJ, you are correct that some of those parts would be great for the AHH, but the AHH I bought was pretty much complete less drivetrain, saddle, and pedals and I actually have an Ultegra triple drivetrain for the AHH. I wanted to try to sell it complete first because I spent a lot of time picking the parts for the Pacer and building it up and it kind of pains me to disassemble it so soon - especially since it is a really sweet riding/looking bike. If I end up parting it out I'll probably use a handful of the parts on the AHH and a planned single speed commuter build (looking for an appropriate frame/ quickbeam btw) and sell the wheels, frame, and some other small bits. I actually have someone interested in the frame and I told him I'd let him know by the end of the week. If that happens I'll post the parts for sale on here first. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Intro/First Riv - Interior Frame Rust Question
Hi all, I've been reading and enjoying the posts here for a long while, but I haven't done much posting up until this point. I just received my first Riv bike (used AHH, early Waterford frame) and I'm very excited, but I'm also a very fastidious person, perhaps to a fault. I stripped all the parts off the frame last night and thoroughly inspected/ cleaned the frame. Besides a couple of small paint chips, I noticed a couple of things that concerned me - there appears to be light surface rust inside the tubes, visible primarily from the bottom bracket and the threads of some of the rack braze ons show some rust. Should I be concerned with this? Is there anything to do to stop the rusting? My understanding is that framesaver won't help at this point. I've read about some rust converter options, but I'm not sure I want to go that route if it isn't necessary. Also, I contacted Waterford today and was able to order what they claim will be the proper touch up paint for my frame, I'm a bit skeptical of it being a match considering the variations in AHH colors that I've seen, but I'll report back when I have it. Any help with the rust question would be much appreciated. Dan -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Intro/First Riv - Interior Frame Rust Question
Thanks for the responses everyone. Certainly reassuring. I do hope to ride it for the next 25 years. I'll probably go ahead and frame saver it, touch up the paint, and put it back together. Also, an update about getting touch up paint from Waterford - I sent them my serial number and it turns out that my frame was built by them in Nov 06, but wasn't painted by them, but from what I could conclude the more recent frames made by them for Rivendell are also painted by them, so touch up paint would be available.
