[RBW] FS: 24 Riv Readers $50 +ship

2024-06-26 Thread Ed Felker
I'm looking for a new home for my Rivendell Readers. They are in good shape
though not pristine, all pages intact.

Issues are 7, 10, 15-23, 28-40. I'll include the 2006 catalog and Catalog
20 (not sure of the date).

Also free with the order: three Bicycle Quarterly issues: Vol. 5 Edition 4,
6/1 and 9/2.

Shipping will be the lowest cost UPS/USPS, or free pickup in Washington,
D.C.

[RBW] Re: Inexpensive rear light to mount on Seat stay - any suggestions

2024-04-30 Thread Ed Felker
The Cygolite Hotshot models come with a seatstay mount clamp in addition to
the seatpost clamp. I've found it can be mounted vertically and is not
particularly bulky, and the output can be lowered to be less blinding to
fellow riders.

[RBW] Re: Best Riv Rando Bike

2023-07-26 Thread Ed Felker
This is an interesting question. I rode PBP in 2007 on my coupled Riv
Bleriot and was comfortable the whole way on Grand Bois 32mm tires. it was
a fair bit more forgiving than the stiffer Ritchey Logic 700c I rode in
1999 with 23mm tires. I'm on tandem for PBP this year but if I were to ride
PBP solo again, I'd take the Bleriot with 38mm tires.

The Riv road-oriented bikes are suitable for randonneur rides with room for
wider tires, fenders, and baggage. I see them on brevets in the
Mid-Atlantic region. Of the current models, it would for me come down to
those with more sloping top tube, the Roadini or the Hilsen.

I rode the old Boston-Montreal-Boston 1200K on a Rambouillet with 26mm
tires -- far too narrow for the roads. It was fine but I preferred the
light and lively feel of the
Bleriot.

[RBW] FS handlebars: Nitto Noodles 46cm, Dirt Drop, VO

2023-06-26 Thread Ed Felker
After selling some bikes as framesets and converting others to 31.8 stems,
I've got a group of 26.0 clamp Nitto and VO handlebars to sell. Please read
the important shipping info below.

Photos here: https://tinyurl.com/ye3cabnf

5 - Nitto Noodle 177cm bars, all 46cm, 26.0 clamp diameter. All were ridden
and are in good to excellent condition. I cleaned the center sections but
not all of the electrical tape residue from the drops. All were wrapped
with nonadhesive bar tape. There are some surface marks from the brake
levers but no gouges. $35 each.

1 - New Nitto RM013 Dirt Drop flared bar. 42 cm width at the hoods. 26.0
clamp. These were put into a stem and removed before riding. $50.

1 - VO Grand Cru deep drop bar. $15. Briefly used.

Shipping is free for multiple items. If you buy all five Noodle bars, one
is free for a total shipped price of $140.

Price for the entire lot is $185 free shipping.

I have three handlebar shipping boxes right now that I hope suffice for
this sale.

If I have any singles left over I will advise the list.

Thanks for looking!

[RBW] FS Nitto large rear rack $135

2023-06-12 Thread Ed Felker
I have a gently used single-rail Nitto large rear rack for sale that I
purchased from Rivendell. Size is 33.6 cm from the lower mount hole to the
top of the rail, so this appears to be the same size as the current 33R.

It got some use on my 700c wheel 58cm Atlantis for mostly in-town rides,
and shows a couple spots of light discoloring where the Ortlieb pannier was
mounted. Also included is a Nitto 3-hole rear light adapter.

Price is $135 plus actual shipping cost via UPS or I can meet up in the
D.C. area for free. Photos here: https://tinyurl.com/4x4w8w3n

[RBW] Re: Suggestions for better braking?

2021-12-20 Thread Ed Felker
I have Tiagra levers and R559 brakes on my Bleriot. The braking improved
significantly using salmon pads and compressionless housing, specifically,
the Jagwire KEB-SL Pro Road. The mushy feeling went away and they have a
nice predictable grip. I use the Jagwire EZ-Bend segments that lead into
the brake levers.

There is also the Yokozuna Reaction housing but the Jagwire is much easier
to cut with regular Park cable cutters. I have the Yokozuna on a bike with
Avid BB7 disc brakes and the stuff was a pain to install but those brakes
got a lot stronger.

[RBW] FS: Berthoud, Ostrich, Thomson, Paul

2021-07-27 Thread Ed Felker
Here are bags and parts that need to go. The bags were on occasional-use
bikes. Photos here: https://bit.ly/3iLxVuA

Details: Prices do not include actual UPS ground shipping from Washington,
DC. USA addresses only. Paypal f/f preferred. Local pickup/handoff can be
arranged.

1. Berthoud GB 192 front bag, with strap. Gray. Very good lightly used
condition, with a small hole in the underside where a bolt was used to help
secure it to a front rack. Strap included. $100.

2. Klikfix fork and adapter for the GB 192, new, never installed. $25.

3. Berthoud mini 86 bag. Gray. A stylish little bag. $75.

4. Ostrich S-2 saddle bag and seatpost support rack. Green. The internal
stiffener worked its way through the fabric, which left a small cut that
can be seen in the photos. I used the stiffener inside the bag under the
straps. $70 for bag and rack.

5. Paul thumbies shifter mounts for MTB bars, 22.2 size. Black. Unused. $45.

6. Thomson Elite 250mm straight post. *27.4 size.* Note the unusual size.
New, never installed. $50.

[RBW] Re: Dim lighting on SON hub/Edelux II headlight

2021-04-29 Thread Ed Felker
SON hubs can have internal problems. I have had two of them, disk-specific,
same wheel, that have stopped working.

When they did fail, it was immediately obvious due to a prominent buzzing
noise. That noise stopped when the hub was disconnected. Both were on our
tandem. In one case the light output was nil, the other was dim and
flickering.

Peter White handled both repairs without issue. He said the failure was
something to do with the coil inside the hub.

We have another SON on a second tandem, also disk brake, that has been
trouble-free.

[RBW] FS: Spectrum lugged tandem frameset

2021-04-06 Thread Ed Felker
We're letting go of our 2015 custom Spectrum lugged tandem frameset, with
some extras.

The captain top tube is 57.5 cm effective. I'm 5"11" and I have the saddle
about as low as it can go at about 72.5 cm and still accommodate the stoker
boom. Steerer is uncut.

My stoker is 5'8" and it was built for a stretched stoker position. It can
easily handle someone shorter and a bit taller.

We set it up with drop bars, 700x32mm tires with fenders and disk brakes.
It's got a fast, solid feel, it reminds me of my Rambouillet.

Other details: King headset; quick release dropouts; 145mm rear/100mm front
hub spacing; front and rear rack mounts. (It was not meant for loaded
touring, however).

Includes stoker boom and fenders.

See a full set of photos and the frame sizing schematic here:
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1gJq14wBO-aJbcl4uwFv6IAtF102f8EJC

Asking $3,650 plus actual ship or pick up in the Washington, D.C. area. No
dents, minimal marks. I also have wheels and the NItto 32F rack to sell,
please inquire if needed.

Thanks for looking!

[RBW] FS 56cm 1992 RB-1 complete $650

2020-04-01 Thread Ed Felker
We bought this bike used and restored it to good running shape, and then it
sat in our indoors spare room. A fun bike to ride, but it's not being used
so time to go!

Sold as is. Original Ultegra/600 7-speed drivetrain and hubs, plus Shimano
Ultegra/600 dual pivot brakes. We added a new chain, Shimano RL400 brake
levers, Nitto 44cm Noodle handlbar and Technomic 8 cm stem. It's in full
working condition.

See a full set of photos here:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/gersema/albums/72157713698302611

No dents. The paint is fair, with a number of small scratches, some that
were touched up by the previous owner. Decals are not all intact; note no
headtube decal. Ruffy Tuffy 28mm tires are not new.

Pedals not included.

Shipping is via Bikeflights at buyer's expense through College Park
Bicycles in College Park, Md.; expect approximately $40 boxing fee in
addition to cost to ship.

Thanks for looking! Riv list readers get first opportunity, next will be
CL.

[RBW] FS 58cm Atlantis Toyo frameset + extras

2019-09-21 Thread Ed Felker
The recent FS thread here got me off the fence about my 58cm Toyo-built
Atlantis. It has always been slightly too big for me.

Asking $1000 for frame/fork/HS + Blackburn frame pump and SKS fenders.
Local pickup or shipped (U.S. only) at your cost through College Park
Bicycles in College Park, Md.

I'm the original owner and always stored it in my home. No dents and just a
few paint flaws including chain scrape on the drive side chainstay.

Lots of photos here:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1B-jdwZqvi_-OVLM5OXVNsXCLMm9w9jPu

I have photographed it built up with Shimano 8-speed bar ends/11-28
cassette/XT rear derailleur drivetrain, 175mm XC Pro 46-36-26 crankset,
Shimano XT/Mavic 700c 36-hole touring wheelset+Pasela PT 35mm tires, Nitto
Noodle 46cm bars, 8 cm Technomic Deluxe stem and Nitto big rear rack.

If any of those items are of interest with the frameset please ask and I
can come up with a low price.

I'm keeping the pedals, saddle, brakes and brake levers.

I love the ride of this bike, its beauty and craftsmanship. I hope it goes
to someone who will put on all the miles.

[RBW] FS Acorn Boxy Rando Bag

2018-01-13 Thread Ed Felker
Hi,

I have a gently used Acorn Boxy Rando Bag in green, drilled for decaleur,
for sale $115 shipped USA via Priority Mail.

Photos here:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/8193389@N06/albums/72157692185067795

I purchased this from a list member for a project that didn't happen. There
are a few signs of light use by the the previous owner but otherwise the
bag is in great shape, no fading, tears or scuffs.

See the Acorn site for more details:
https://www.acornbags.com/products/boxy-rando-bag-new

Thanks for reading!

Re: [RBW] Re: Pricing a HubbuHubbuH build

2017-09-22 Thread Ed Felker
Interesting. Must have changed over time; or because we use bar end
shifters the gaps are not an issue.

We bought XD tandem cranks new in late 2015 for our Spectrum tandem. Zephyr
chainrings have worked great with Shimano 9-speed chain and cassette
without any special modifications.

We're running 50-40-26 rings, Shimano 9-speed bar-end shifters and
Campagnolo front derailleur, the older kind made for the Racing Triple and
similar cranksets.

We've built up tandems for road touring and brevets, all in Rivendell
style. Your list is good. Correct on the rear hub. The biggest cost drivers
on a tandem are cranks – we like Sugino XD-tandem specific with TA Zephyr
rings – and strong wheels.

We like White Industries hubs though they require periodic maintenance.
Phil are also great but more expensive. Lower cost Shimano 145mm drum brake
hubs are out there but you'll need a disk adapter.

[RBW] Clicking From Crank Area

2016-10-17 Thread Ed Felker
I've been working through the same noise on my SimpleOne. Happens when I stand
up and crank hard up a slope.

All drivetrain components & rear wheel inspected and replaced or overhauled.
Thinking it might be related to the kickstand, or fender installation, seems
like the noise is caused by frame flex at bottom bracket area causing something
to bind up.

[RBW] Re: Odds of a Fully lugged tandem happening?

2016-07-19 Thread Ed Felker
We had a custom fully lugged road & randonneuring tandem built last year by
Tom Kellogg/Spectrum.

My wife Mary wrote a post about it:
https://chasingmailboxes.com/2016/04/27/the-highs-and-lows-of-new-bike-day/

Here's a photo of the frameset by Tom; scroll forward to see more details.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/spectrumcycles/20710233560

The price for the frameset and fork was about twice what Grant charges for
a full custom Rivendell. It could go higher depending on the paint scheme.

I forwarded photos to Grant and he replied that it took many hours of labor
to craft the lugs. For the same reason, Tom builds just one tandem a year.

The $1,600 price for the tandem frameset Grant is selling now is a real
bargain for what you are getting. It's not my kind of tandem but the value
is quite good.

[RBW] FS: Nitto R10, Nitto Uplift, Carradice SQR

2015-09-21 Thread Ed Felker
Hey folks,

I've got some extra saddlebag support racks I used with Carradice bags. All
clamp to the seat post -- useful for bikes without rack mounts.

See photos of everything are at:

Items ship tracked Priority Mail from 20024 in Washington, DC. Discounted
pricing for local pickup.

Paypal accepted. Preference goes to multiple item orders; deduct $5 for
each additional item; or take all four for $120 shipped.

1. Nitto R10 rack. 20.5cm stays, uncut. No. 1 in photos. Slight
discoloration spot on underside. With seatstay clamps. $50 shipped.

2. Nitto R10 rack. 26 cm stays, uncut. No. 2 in photos. With seatstay
clamps. Marks on stays at clamp bolt locations. $50 shipped.

More details on the R10 at:
https://www.benscycle.com/p-2107-nitto-r10-rear-rack.aspx

3. Nitto Uplift, the old model that is long gone, Grant sold it in the
early days of Riv. I picked this one up from another rider who used it, and
everything looks in order, no cracking at the clamp. I cleaned it up but
never installed it. $25 shipped.

4. Carradice SQR uplift. Briefly used, clean and in good working condition
with the spring needed for the plastic red slider in the block. You need a
minimum 49mm exposed seat post. $25 shipped. More details at:

Thanks. Any questions, please don't hesitate.
