[RBW] Re: Flat Bottom Backpack

2018-06-04 Thread Eli Queen
I have a North Street backpack. It's great. Really nicely made, and has a
flat bottom:

They make bigger ones, and convertible (to pannier) models, but I like the
simplicity of the one above.

Good luck,
Eli

I don't have a Quickbeam, but I do have a Rosco built abound a Qiuckbeam/SO
fork. I'll second Rich's recondition for the Continental SpeedRide. The
42-622 fits under fenders and is great for most any surface. They're easy
on the wallet too.

[RBW] Re: Your favorite Rivendell?

2018-05-03 Thread Eli Queen
I only have one, a 51cm red Rosco Bubbe, so it's my favorite. In the year
I've had it, it's great for everything I've had the opportunity to do with
it. Rocky and rooty MA trails, to a 100k Populaire, VT dirt roads, getting
me to and from work. Super stable, never twitchy, but not heavy or sluggish
at all. The best thing I can say is that it always encourages me to take
the long way ... no matter where I'm going.

[RBW] Re: New England Lobstah Riv Roll?

2017-08-29 Thread Eli Queen
Not 100% sure if I'm free on that date (probably am!), but I'm in the
Boston area though. Cambridge to be exact. If you want to do a ride on the
Minuteman Bikeway I'd really suggest making a loop via the Battle Road
Trail (revolutionary war era dirt road, now a historic site) and the
Reformatory Branch Trail. The Minuteman is okay, paved multi-use path = can
be busy, but Battle Road is truly beautiful, and then you get to connect it
all back up via a packed dirt rail tail.

Here's a like to the route from the Alewife T station (but of course you
could start in form any point on the Minuteman):
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/24725011

Let me know if you have any questions. Hope others are up for a ride, and I
can make it too!

[RBW] Re: To shim or not to shim?

2017-05-30 Thread Eli Queen
This is the method I've used to insert shims (which -- as others have said
-- work great once installed) as well as handlebars.

https://janheine.wordpress.com/2012/01/17/inserting-a-handlebar-into-a-stem/

It works perfectly, and the little nut/bolt/dime jig holds the stem open so
you have both hands free to position the shim.

I haven't found the that the masking tape is always necessary.

Hope this helps,
Eli

[RBW] Looking for a small Appa or Clem

2017-05-17 Thread Eli Queen
Hi all,

My wife had a chance to ride a 46cm Appaloosa this past weekend and loved
it. Frames, or completes, that small are hard to find (and it seems that
Rivendell might not be making many production models in those sizes
anymore.) Dose anyone have any leads on a 46cm Appa, a 45cm Clem H, or
something similar?

Many thanks in advance,

(First post!)

I'm building one up right now. It's taking a while (or you could say I'm
taking my time) b/c I'm also building my fist set of wheels as part of a
class at my local co-op. The only in-progress photos I have are from my
cluttered basement, but I'll try to take so better ones soon. Build is
fairly Riv-standard:

Albatross bars
Nitto Technomic
Tektro linear pull brakes and levers
Microshift thumbies
Sugino/Shimano drivetrain

It's certainly pretty, I can't wait to see how it rides.
