Re: [RBW] FS - Red Toyo-built Atlantis frameset, 60cm

2023-08-02 Thread Elton Lance
I can’t help but chime in here. . .

I worked at Harris Cyclery for 16 years. The first 8 of those were
side-by-side with Sheldon, who passed in February, 2008. This frame is one I
purchased new from Rivendell in the original Russian green. It was 2004, IIRC.
This bike never belonged to Sheldon. I was involved in working with Harriet
Fell, his widow, in finding homes for many bikes in his personal collection,
though this was not one of those.

One dark and rainy night in October, 2006, I was riding home from work, lit
like a Christmas tree, and was struck by a hit-and-run driver. I went over the
car and the bike suffered top tube damage such that Sheldon said, “I wouldn’t
ride it if it was mine!”. So back to Rivendell it went for a new top tube. I
don’t know for sure who did the work. When it was repaired, Mark Abele called
me to ask what color I would like to have it repainted. Red! And so it was. . .

Six months later, I was attacked by a rottweiler in nearly the same spot. The
bike was unharmed but I was not. The settlement I received from the dog’s
owner paid for a good bit of my first JP Weigle (happy ending).

Shortly thereafter, I sold the bike to Gino Ganz (sp?) in CA. Beyond that,
I’ve lost track. It’s fun to see it re-emerge from time to time.

It’s like a game of telephone, it seems. But them’s the facts.

It was listed by Rivendell as a 61cm. It’s one of the ones I wish I’d kept!

Re: [RBW] Red Toyo Atlantis?

2023-05-09 Thread Elton Lance
I was the original owner of the red Atlantis and sold it to Gino.

On a rainy commute home from Harris Cyclery, I was involved in a hit-and-run
and the top tube was damaged. I sent it to RBW and they took care of the
repair (I don’t know who actually did the work for them). Upon completion of
the repair, I was asked by Mark (IIRC) what color I wanted and red was my
choice. It later survived a Rottweiler attack which left the bike unharmed but
me not so much. I’m better now. :)

Nothing other than the familiar lovely green was ever original to an Atlantis,
as far as I know.

Re: [RBW] FS Bump: 60cm Wilbury looking for new home. $2500

2022-11-10 Thread Elton Lance
HI Matt,

I measure the theoretical top tube at 57cm. In the past, I’ve had it set up
with drops and liked it very much, though the stem was shorter than the 12cm
currently installed. I think I used an 8cm or a 9cm. I’m nearly 70, a bit
overweight, and not as flexible as I once was, and so the upright position.

[RBW] FS: Rivendells Wilbury and FX/SS Custom

2022-11-03 Thread Elton Lance
I’m purging and have two lovely Rivs for sale:

#1) The Wilbury is a 60cm with excellent parts throughout:

- Bars are Albatross alloy with Nitto Technomic Deluxe stem and Ultegra
headset.
- Wheels are polished Velocity A23 32h rims (rear O/C) laced with DT Comp DB
spokes to a White Ind M15 in the rear and a 32h SonDelux in front.
- BB is a Phil Wood.
- The 8spd drivetrain is an Ultegra RD and Ultegra 8spd Shifters (on Paul
Thumbies) paired IRD compact front.
- Fenders are V/O Zeppelin.
- Tubus rear rack is Ti.
- Rear light does not function and is a reflector only.
- Saddle and pedals are included, as are the Pitlock security skewers and an
additional standard set.
- Sugino RD2 50/34 and an 8spd 11/32 cassette in back.
- Rear spacing in 135mm.

Saddle height in the photos is 77cm. A new inverted/hanging Schmidt eDelux II
headlight w/R handlebar mount is included but not shown in the photos.
Excellent condition with no dents or dings. A few scratches (shown in photos)
with the most notable being on the drive side seat stay and the front of the
seat post lug (which was damaged in a previous shipping event). I’ll include
close-but-not-perfect enamel nail polish. :)

Asking $3000 plus actual shipping.

Photos are here <https://www.icloud.com/sharedalbum/#B0g59UlCqlgVJ6>.

---

#2). Early and unusual Custom (S/N 950084) Fixed/FW Road (Waterford built). It
would make an interesting 3spd build as well.

As you can see here in the photos
<https://www.icloud.com/sharedalbum/#B0g5yeZFhZiEIh>, the frame is Reynolds 753
and the fork 531. Saddle height shown is 77cm.

Some other numbers:

ST - 63cm (c-t)
TT - 60cm (t-t)
Stem - Nitto “Girder” 9cm
Bars = Nitto Noodle 44cm
Brakes - Campy C Record
Levers - Cane Creek SCR5
Hubs - Suzue Pro Max Carbon 32R/28F (Fixed/Free)
Rims - Velocity AeroHead
Spokes - DT DB
Crank - Campy Record 170mm
Chainring - Sugino 75 48t 3/32
Rear cog - Phil 18t 3/32

Also available is a second wheel set (tubeless) with C Record (aka Sheriff’s
Star) hubs and Mavic Paris-Roubaix rims built by Peter White (see photos). The
tubular tires hold air but haven't been ridden in many years and should be
replaced. I’m running 700x28 clinchers on the Suzue wheel set, which are about
the max.

Asking $1750 for the bike with either wheel set and and $2000 for bike with
both wheel sets (plus ConUS shipping at cost).

Saddle and pedals not included (but negotiable). I have a good selection of
other quality cogs (Phil, EAI, etc) as well as several White Ind freewheels if
any of those might be of interest. Mostly new or very nearly so.

_

Please inquire off-list if interested in either or both.

Re: [RBW] Crank Repair Advice

2022-08-07 Thread Elton Lance
Most likely, they either ran a pedal tap through it to repair the threads or
installed a helicoil. If they did the former, it’s hard to say what the
resulting threads are like.

If they did the latter, and installed it properly, you should be fine. The
helicoil tap is oversized, so you get fresh threading, and the helicoil is
installed with strong threadlocker (i.e. red loctite or the like). Keep the
pedal threads greased and you are good to go.

If they did not install a helicoil and it fails again, you can always install a
helicoil at that time. It should't be necessary to replace the crank arm
unless there is other damage to the arm or tapers.
