[RBW] Re: New Sam Hillborne sizing advice

2024-05-20 Thread Grady Wright
Thank you for the pictures and stating the saddle hight! Super helpful.
With my saddle hight being 79 or 80 that's more post than I want. Feeling
good about buying the 60cm as well.

Hey all, first time posting here. I'm planning on grabbing a Sam
Hillborne frameset when they go on sale this month. It'll be my first
Rivendell. I decided on the Hillborne as a replacement for my 56cm Cross
Check, which has never been comfortable for me. The short headtube puts
 the
bars too far below my saddle.

I have a pair of Billie bars I'd like to put on the Hillborne for daily
commuting, grocery getting, and some light off road riding. I'd also like
to have the option to use drop bars at some point down the line.

I went to the Rivendell shop a few weeks ago to test ride a few bikes
and get sized. I'm 6' with a 92 PBH (long legs, short torso), and based on
the Sam geo chart, my PBH puts me firmly in the size 60 Sam range. They
 didn't have a 60 Hillborne around, so I instead rode a 57 Sam and a couple
of 61.5 Homers with different cockpit setups.

- The 57 Sam was set up with wide, swept back bars (Ron's Ortho
bars) and was comfortable. We did have to raise the seatpost up pretty
 high
to get the saddle in a good position.
- The first 61.5 Homer was set up with Billie bars and was also
comfortable. The saddle was pretty close to the top tube, however -
 there
was maybe a little less than a fistful of seatpost showing.
- The second 61.5 Homer with drops made me feel a little stretched
out. The saddle was raised up higher than ideal for my height, but the
 bike
belonged to a staff member who wasn't around that day, and so we didn't
adjust the saddle position. Part of me thinks it might have worked with
 a
lower saddle, shorter stem, and higher bars, but I'm not totally sure.

I left feeling like a 60 Sam would work for me, but I'm now second
guessing whether it makes more sense to go down to the 57 for a shorter
 top
tube length. However, the size 57 Sam has a suggested PBH range of 86-89,
which is 3cm lower than my PBH of 92.

Could anyone share if you've had a similar experience being in-between
sizes for a Sam Hillborne, and how the size you chose worked out? Or
 better
yet, is there anyone near Berkeley who has a 57cm or 60cm Hillborne you'd
let me test ride to nail down my size? I'd be happy to buy you a beer or
some other beverage as a thank you!

Please report back when you get your new sam or the chance to ride the
different sizes. I am wanting to get a sam for a dedicated drop bar rando
bike. I am 6'1" PBH 90 and my 60cm Appaloosa fits just how I like with a
wavy style handlebar. I'm thinking about buying a 60cm SH from my local
shop but a little concerned about it being big for me using drops. Would
love to hear about your experience.

I built my Appaloosa with JJJ bars. I like them a lot; however, I agree
with Larson.photo33 slightly wider would be desirable to me. My handlebar

that fit the bill, and I will be happy using them until something same but

I have a brand new 700C Cliffhanger wheelset with Deore hubs 32h front and
rear. Silver and Tubeless ready. The were built by Rich Rivendell/Hands on
Wheels. I paid $485 for them.

[RBW] Re: WTB - 60cm Appaloosa in Silver - FFHS only

2021-01-21 Thread Grady Wright
Hello Marty,
I don't believe a Silver 60cm Appaloosa exists. At least not yet. The 60CM
size was a new size for the last group of Appaloosas and they came in
Orange and Blue. To my knowledge Silver frames in your size range would be
a 58 or 62cm. Hopefully that little bit of info helps you track down a
bike. I bought an orange 60cm last year at this time. It's a really great
bike, I hope you find one.

Regards

Re: [RBW] Re: friction mode on silver shifters and shimano down tube dura ace shifters slip!

2020-09-30 Thread Grady Wright
I have had the same experience with my new silver shifters. They will not
hold their position even when I tighten them to the point It's to difficult
to shift. I am using an old M952 xtr derailleur. They've even frayed and
broken the shifter cable. I emailed them about it a couple time with no
response but seems from the latest blog I believe that they are addressing
at least the issue with it cutting the cable. Little disappointed as they
are really nice looking shifters.

Thanks everyone. Those were the two fenders I had narrowed it down to. The
Simworks internal measurement seems to small and further inspection of the

Thanks for sharing the pictures of your Appaloosas. Those are both great

[RBW] What Fenders Are These?

2020-03-27 Thread Grady Wright
Hello Friends,
Can anyone identify what fenders are in this photo from rivendell's blug?

https://rivbike.tumblr.com/post/185091706269/who-rides-an-appaloosa-john-a-familiar-face-in

I messaged them to ask if they knew what size tires and model of fender and
the answer was the tires were 2.25" Thunder Burt's and a Hanjo fender. I
can see that the tires are Rocket Ron's and I can't find a hanjo fender
that wide that was available around the time of this photo.

The goal for my new appaloosa is to do a 2.1" tire with fenders which from
this photo looks possible if I can find the right fender.

Thanks in advance for your help!

[RBW] Re: Skis for AllTrails...

2019-12-23 Thread Grady Wright
These are exactly what I have been looking for! Thanks for sharing. My
experience with BC cross-country skis are that they are difficult to
maneuver in tight places and very short descents. You are spot on about
needing a different ski for non-groomed trails (and I'll add something more
efficient than snowshoes). I am probably going to pick up a pare and move
my 3 pin binding/boot set up to these.

I have been researching these the last day or two and I think this type of
ski has the unofficial classification of trekking ski. Seems that
BlackDiamond makes one too yet with space age materials and more expensive.

Now we can ride and ski like Mongolians! Do you ski with a a long stick or
ski poles?

I also live in CO maybe I'll see you out on the trail one of these days.

[RBW] Re: MUSA Pants

2019-12-20 Thread Grady Wright
I ordered the MUSA pants this time around because the fabric seemed to have
a little more structure than the previous version and I was in need of some
sporty pants. They arrived today and immediately I had to come here and
share how pleased I am with them. I could have ordered the L or the XL
based of the sizing chart. I ended up going with XL because I suspected my
tree trunk legs might not fit with the L size. XL was the right choice for
me. They have a nice fit. the pants are loose enough to be comfortable and
fitted enough to look flattering, even if I were to lose a few pounds. The
fabric is a little lighter than I had anticipated but it still has enough
fabric to hold some structure. I might describe them as "all season" light
enough for warmer weather and with a base layer warm enough for cross
county skiing (which I am going to try out tomorrow on the winter
solstice). I would buy again if they did another run. All in all pretty
perfect.

[RBW] Re: Gus or Susie?/Threadless Weight vs Quill Weight?

2019-11-16 Thread Grady Wright
I had the opportunity to take a Gus Boots on an extended test ride in the Mount
Diablo State Park. My test ride included all terrain types from tarmac to a
steep singletrack decent down a rocky spine. My opinion is Gus is the most
hili (mountain bikey) of the Rivendell lineup. It’s really a really fun and
capable bike. I have also ridden a Hunq. I love both bikes. If both bikes were
in my stable I don’t think the Hunq would be the primary trail bike. Gus Boots
wins the trail spot and the Hunq would be the faster hili-country bike.
My thoughts are if you have a Hunq already go for the Gus Boots because the
threadless set up will give you more stem and handlebar options that are up to
MTB strength. For someone that doesn’t have a Hunq and wants a Rivendell with
greater tire clearance then a Suzie is a great option along with the Clem’s.

Just my two cents.

Happy trails

I saw this vest at a Carhartt store and it seemed very bright and
reflective. they run large for wearing over clothing so may want to size
down.

[RBW] Re: A Few Photos From Saturday's Ride

2019-09-05 Thread Grady Wright
Thanks for the ride report. Last fall I followed the same trail from SLC
north to Ogden and took frontrunner back. I always intended to do the
southern section. I have recently moved away from SLC so I imagine it's not
a ride I'll get to do now, but now I feel like I was able to.

[RBW] Re: Dropbar width

2019-08-21 Thread Grady Wright
Jim you are correct that the bar size reflects from the widest measurement
in the Flare and the Hoods being closer. The 52 is closer to the 48cm
Noodle in the hoods. The bar comes in 3 sizes 46, 48, 52 and in 25.4 and
26.0 clamp sizes. According to Bike Touring News the bar RM-013 was also
designed by Grant and original equipment on the 1987 Bridgestone MB-1.
I have tried a couple other drops lately and I think I am sold on the RM-013
Here is some more reference.

[RBW] Re: Dropbar width

2019-08-19 Thread Grady Wright
Nitto RM-013 are a good alternative to the Noodles. They have shorter
reach, and more flare, so more wrist clearance.
