Thanks, Garth. That's very helpful. I'll just order some swatches of
different supplex/taslan and see what looks/feels right. Will report back.

[RBW] MUSA Shorts fabric?

2020-06-13 Thread Harald Kliems
I love my (old model) MUSA Shorts in many respects. But there are some fit
issues/features that could still be a little better, and it also seems the
(new model) shorts have been out of stock for quite a while. My wonderfully
skilled SO has offered to sew me a pair. One thing I really like about the
shorts is the fabric: Nice texture, much more durable than any other
materials I've tried, quick-dry, ... Does anybody know where I could buy
this kind of fabric? Riv describe it as "quick dry textured nylon," but
searching for that on various fabric websites doesn't really yield anything
promising.
Any pointers would be appreciated.

It was some technical glitch specifically with the Hail Mary gift cards.
Other people who encounter issues with those should just contact Riv
directly. As I said, they fixed it promptly, despite being closed that day.

Good morning:
I was going to order some bits and pieces from Rivendell this morning and
remembered that I had a bunch of $10 gift certificates from Grant's Hail
Mary fundraising effort in early 2018. So I dug through my emails and

Did Rivendell switch to a new gift card system at some point? I don't

I'll be curious to hear how they compare with Tektro CR-720s. I'm
reasonably happy with mine, but the Diacompes are certainly prettier and
also shave off a bit of weight. And people have complained that the Tektro
has too much flex/play.

[RBW] Re: Prague to Paris route help

2018-04-18 Thread Harald Kliems
I'd be cautious about relying on Google Maps in Europe. Their data quality
is much worse than it is in the US. OpenStreetMap, on the other hand, is
generally much better. So you could use something like OpenRouteService to
plot a route (note that there is a limit in how long a route you can plan).
Prague to Nuremberg:
https://maps.openrouteservice.org/directions?n1=49.758021=12.770464=9=50.06694,14.460249,49.446007,11.07977=1d=0=-1=0=3=en-US=km

[RBW] Re: Long Rides to Nowhere: promotional video by SFR

Last spring I rode part of the 600k route in cyclotouriste mode over
several days. And yeah, there were many times when I was thinking, "And
there are people who can ride all this in 40 hours???" It's a really
beautiful route, though, and I can highly recommend it for a bike touring
trip. Just make sure to have lower gears than I did :)
You can find ride reports with lots of pictures for the first 4 days on my
blog: http://ride-or-pie.blogspot.com/p/touring.html

[RBW] Re: Prague to Paris route help

2018-04-16 Thread Harald Kliems
There's a great German website that has routes that are much more direct
than the typical tourist routes, but still have a focus on low traffic,
minimizing hills, and a pleasant bike experience.

For Americans (and Germans alike), the route presentation will take a lot
of getting used to -- he basically cuts up and recombines topo maps for the
routes, and so you end up with only a few pieces of paper for even very
long routes.

He doesn't have anything for the section from Prague to Nuremberg. But you
could use EuroVelo Route 4 to the German border:
http://www.cyklistevitani.cz/Vypis-vyhledavani.aspx?lat=49.63726658842979=15.3849506999=7

Then go south for a bit on this route until close to Regensburg:
http://www.radweit.de/br/bry.html

Connect to Nuremberg: http://www.radweit.de/nr/nry.html (you can probably
cut across to this route from further north, but beware that this is quite
hilly territory)

Nuremberg to Karlsruhe: http://www.radweit.de/nka/nkay.html

Connect to Paris: http://www.radweit.de/ppf/ppfyd.html

There are many options to take sections by train, as long as you stay away
from the high-speed trains, which for the most part don't accept bikes.

[RBW] Re: Hubbuhubbuh with drop bars?

2018-01-16 Thread Harald Kliems
Just a quick update. The good news: I bought a tandem. The bad news: It's
not a Riv. At a bike swap yesterday, I found a good deal on a 2001
Cannondale tandem in our size. I'm a little sad that I won't get to own a
Riv, but reason says that I made a good decision by starting our entry into
the tandem world with something used. I've seen too many sad tandem
classifieds from people who spent a lot of money on fancy tandems only to
realize that the whole tandem thing is not for them...

[RBW] Re: Hubbuhubbuh with drop bars?

2018-01-11 Thread Harald Kliems
Ken:
That's really interesting. Your "before" experience very much matches mine
-- I've tried North Road, flat bars, bar ends, Ergon grips, but nothing
ever was truly comfortable. And I've tried it on bikes with different kinds
of fit, from a Dahon folder, a Surly fat bike, to a Gunnar Roadie. Looking
at your Flickr stream and comparing the (beautifully built up!) HHH and
your single bikes, it looks like the saddle-to-bar height is quite
different, with the HHH putting the bars several inches above the saddle,
whereas on your singles bars and saddles seem to be roughly level. May that
explain the difference? I'm not sure if I ever tried non-drop-bars on a
bike where the handlebars were much above the saddle (partly because there
just aren't that many non-custom bikes where that is even possible if
you're 6'5"...).

I shall study the HHH geometry charts more closely and at some point also
shoot an email to Rivendell to see what they have to say on the topic.

Thanks for sharing your perspective and the offer for a test ride!

 Harald.

[RBW] Hubbuhubbuh with drop bars?

2018-01-11 Thread Harald Kliems
Hi everyone:
This is my first post in the group -- some of you may recognize my name
from the iBOB or 650B lists, though. I am not yet an RBW Owner. But I am in
the market for a tandem, and the HHH seems like a wonderful option. The
only major concern I have: Will I be able to set it up with drop bars? My
goal here is not to make it racier or something like that; it's just that
my wrists do not get along with anything that's not a drop bar. I was
wondering if anyone here has set up their HHH with drop bars and how they
like it. Looking at the geometry charts, I don't see any obvious issues (I
am 6'5" and therefore the larger reach of drop bars may actually be a
positive). But I'm by no means a tandem expert and I'd be curious to hear
some first-hand experiences. Or well-informed opinions.
Thanks,
 Harald in Madison (WI)
