[RBW] Re: Mt. Desert Island, ME Acadia cycling tips

2015-07-13 Thread Howard H
Erl,

The carriage roads are great. I've biked them a few times and always enjoy
them. You'll share them with hikers and even some horse carriages and
probably some riders on horseback. There are over 40 miles of carriage
roads so you could spend a lot of time on them. The park loop road is paved
and though you share it with cars I've seen plenty of bikes on it. It's
mostly two lanes and one-way. I think the speed limit is around 30 mph or
so.

As for roads outside the park, I think both Rt. 3 from the 3/102 split to
Bar Harbor is going to be busy, and Rt. 102 from the 3/102 split to
Southwest Harbor will be busy. The other thing to keep in mind is that many
of the roads don't have much of a shoulder, which you may or may not be
comfortable with. Assuming you're driving up, you might want to spend a
couple of hours driving around to scope out some of the roads along the
coast (For example NE Harbor to Sargeant Dr. along Somes Sound).

Also, consider taking the ferry (mail boat?) to the Cranberry Islands. It's
a quick trip, but I have no idea if they allow bikes on the boat.

I've been there many times. Contact me off-list if you'd like any dining
recommendations.

Have a great trip!

[RBW] OT: Loosening crank arm-thoughts on cause/solution?

2015-05-07 Thread Howard H
Erl, this sounds exactly like what I experienced with my Ram last year. I took
it to my LBS and they confirmed that the inner surface of the arm had worn and
would never seat properly. They ordered a new Sugino left crank arm and
installed it. I think the arm itself was surprisingly inexpensive, around 20
bucks IIRC.

I took some really old ski gaiters and strapped them on to the albas. They

an inch or two I have a (too small) Raleigh MTB with knobbies I can use.

[RBW] Re: Bike and Hatchet First Aid

2014-10-18 Thread Howard H
I carry a few 2 gauze bandages, some large (2 x 4) and medium band aids,
and a couple of gloves in a small zip-lock bag.

I should probably add some antibiotic ointment.

Luckily I've only had to use my kit once, when a small group of roadies in
a tight group crashed in a pile about 50 feet in front of me on the WOD
west of Leesburg. One of them had some nasty road rash and a bad cut on his
finger. Nobody in their group had a first aid kit so I gave the guy a
couple of large band aids for his leg and and also used the gauze and a
band aid to wrap his finger. I told him he should go to the emergency room
because of the size/depth of the cut, which I thought would need stitches.
It turns out I was so focused on helping this guy that I forgot to put on
the gloves (...that won't happen next time).

Since early August I've had or have been close to others with some bad
luck on the bike and using a hatchet... I've been over the handlebars twice
and then this weekend a good friend put one of my axes (fiskars x15) into
his knee while splitting wood. All's well in each case thank goodness
though two out of the incidents involved the emergency room and the Axe
 wound required an ambulance.

Prevention of these incidents is definitely worth discussion and I've
given each allot of thought in that regards but the recent issue with the
Axe really has me thinking hard about my first aid kit for the woods and
while on the bike... We were lucky to have several level headed people
(couple of eagle scouts!) And the materials to improvise a tourniquet and
 compression bandage.

So as I've been pouring over trauma kits for my truck and campsite I also
started thinking that as a nearly every day commuter I should have some kit
with me on the bike just as I have repair tools for the bike.

 The things I'm thinking of so far include;

 -wound cleaner, alcohol wipes?
 -antibiotic ointment
-sterile gauze bandages (typical road rash size)
-conforming wrap or athletic wrap or medical tape
 -triangle bandage
 -small assortment of band aids
 -rubber gloves

 Would the following be overkill;
 -CAT style tourniquet
 -quick clot sponge or bandage
 -'Israeli' style compression bandage
 -trauma shears

The scenario for this kit is urban commuting with professional emergency
responce time of 10 min or less, cell service at all times and the level of
training I have is relatively basic. (Scout and basic military level). Oh
and it needs to fit in either a large saddle wedge, frame bag or other such
unobtrusive, stays on bike type location.

What, if anything, do you guys include in your on bike kit?

[RBW] Re: GAP Trail from Confluence to Rockwood, PA

Thanks for sharing.

This summer my wife and I are planning to ride the entire Great Allegheny
Passage (GAP) trail (150 miles) from Pittsburgh, PA to Cumberland, MD with
our 13 and 11 year old sons. Since we have never cycled the GAP, we
decided some real world experience would help us prepare the boys for the
adventure. We settled on exploring one of the more remote stretches, the
20 miles between Confluence and Rockwood, PA. On Friday afternoon, my
wife and I loaded our two bikes on the car and drove the three hours to
Confluence, PA. We spent the night at River View Kitchenettes, a great
place right along the GAP Trail and overlooking the river. After an
early evening walk around the town, the Trailside restaurant provided us a
great pizza dinner washed down with a strawberry Nestle Quick.

The morning came crisp and clear; it was going to be a beautiful weekend
for cycling. After a delicious breakfast at Sister’s Café, we set off by
10am. Leaving Confluence the trail runs consistently uphill to Rockwood,
PA. The grade is gently but unrelentingly upward with little opportunity
for coasting. However, we were in no hurry and spun along at a
comfortable, leisurely pace enjoying the beauty and quiet of the forest we
rode through. The trail follows the Casselman River, and as we rode we
listened to the water rushing by. The main CSX rail line runs on the
other side of the river and goes through both Confluence and Rockwood.
 Freight
trains rolled through at least every hour. I enjoy trains and was not
bothered by their presence. In reading online reviews of lodging options
along the trail, many reviewers do complain about the train noise,
especially at night. At times we felt like the only people for miles
around. At the Pinkerton High Bridge, next to the closed Pinkerton
Tunnel, about half way between Confluence and Rockwood, we took a break
overlooking the river. Oranges and another Strawberry Quick refreshed.
 Three
and half hours after leaving Confluence we arrived in Rockwood. Did I
say we took a leisurely pace? We did pass perhaps a dozen people, a mix
of bikers and hikers, in the 20 miles.

Rockwood was a welcoming place, and we enjoyed more pizza and some ice
cream at the Mill Shoppes on Main Street. We then explored some of the
more kid friendly lodging options in town for the summer trip, while
waiting to check in at the Gingerbread House BB. The BB was wonderful,
and we spent the late afternoon relaxing and reading on the porch swing.
Sunday morning dawned crisp and clear. After a delicious breakfast at
the BB of blueberry French toast, we headed back down the trail to
Confluence. The downward grade was a welcome relief from yesterday’s
ride and we covered the distance in only two and half hours. Still
 leisurely.

Overall it was a terrific weekend, and we are excited to experience the
whole trail as a family this summer. Pictures prove we did something on
 a trail with bikes:

It's hard to tell, but is there any room for fenders? On second thought,
you might not want them if you're riding in the snow. I rode out past

filled up the space between wheel/fender on the Ram until I had to stop and
clean it out.

Love the basket up front. It's so convenient and the Shopsack will fit

Hey Michael, I was thinking of doing that training ride as well. You still
have a couple of weeks to recoverhope you're feeling better soon!

[RBW] Re: Training ride today on Bleriot.

2014-01-09 Thread Howard H
My most painful ride was the last 10 - 15 miles of an 80 mile ride. I
realized (too late) that I had not been taking enough breaks, or drinking
enough water.

Training for upcoming Metric Century I hope to go on.
 Went on the Bleriot.
 Rolling hills of Howard County.
 ~30 degrees and still.
 Nice ride.
 Salty roads.
 Bike felt rally draggy.
I think I am outta shape from not riding much since the cold weather has
 kicked in.
Legs were killing me and I was reduced to lamentably slow speeds.
27 miles of pain, but fun and rewarding to do the ride!

Weird, because I just did a long ride with Tony DeFillipo and Co. about
two weeks ago and I felt great.

Here are a few pics from the Howard County Fairgrounds:

What were your most painful rides?
